  • Landscape photography on the Isle of Skye - This the first of a series of videos fro our trip around Scotland this autumn. After some coastal photography, our first day on the Isle of Skye was spent hiking out to Camasunary bay and climbing Sgurr na Stri to photograph the black Cuillin mountains. The Isle of Skye really is one of finest landscape photography locations in the UK and we're looking forward to sharing these videos, and a few images! This was also my first outing with the Lumix S1R, which we were kindly loaned for this trip.
    In the video I mention the film made by Cal Major called Skye's The Limit, raising awareness of the problems facing the Isle of Skye as a result of plastic in the ocean. You can view the trailer for Skye's the Limit on Cal's channel here:

      @@asiangirlinthewild Thank you very much! It's definitely a great camp spot, it was a shame we weren't able to camp up there on this trip, but we'll be back for sure, those views at dawn and dusk would be amazing! Scotland always comes with a risk of rain, but it makes up for it when it's clear! It was awful to see the plastic though, at least people are becoming much more aware of the issue. Thanks for watching! S.

    Nice Vlog & some great images - I enjoyed that. I also had pleasure of visiting Skye last year for the first time in between (lockdowns) - I was like a 'headless' chicken rushing around trying to get all those 'goto' images.. I didn't get the chance to do any upwards hiking but this vlog has inspired to plan a trip again so thanks for that...

    I have just discovered your channel and am greatly enjoying it. I seem to be going backwards though, as I watched your "Last Evening on Harris" offering before this one. Oh well.
    Loved your shots on the rocks with the "stretched" waves. I live in California, and going down to the shore with my ND filters to create some crazily blurred water flowing over and around rocks is one of my favorite things to do. Sadly, the Pacific has the same trouble with plastic pollution as all the other oceans around the world. The last time my wife and I went for a walk along a beach north of San Francisco, we found an enormous amount of plastic. She carted a good deal of it back to the parking lot and put it in the dumpster, but that is less than a drop in the bucket.
    Wonderful vids. I look forward to seeing a few more of them.

    • @BosePhotography
      @BosePhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kevin, thank you very much, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! I really love photographing waves crashing over rocks and tried to do as much coastal photography as I could on this trip. Sadly, we live in Oxfordshire which is about as far away from the sea as you can be in the UK (although, admittedly it isn't really that far!) so I don't have much of a chance to photograph seascapes normally.
      The plastic situation is extremely sad. It is great to hear that you have been picking up what you can (we always pick up a bit every time we visit a beach) but it can be so disheartening to think about how huge the problem is and how little we can do as individuals. Every little helps of course though. By the way, Hannah and I are members of an organisation of photographers with the aim of promoting conservation called Nature First and we're hoping to do a lot more to promote these kinds of issues through our photography in future. If you have not come across them, I highly recommend taking a look and signing up ( www.naturefirstphotography.org ).
      All the best, Sam.

My planned trip to Skye back in May had to be cancelled so hoping I can make it next April/may so looking for some tips - hence clicking on your video when the Algorithm showed it. Thank you very much for your kind comment, I am sorry that your trip was cancelled this year. We were very lucky to be able to make it up there when we did, after the first peak in the pandemic had subsided. I hope that you are able to reschedule your visit in 2021 and that we will all be able to visit under better circumstances soon! It's a fantastic walk out to Sgurr Na Stri. I'm hoping to camp up there on our next visit! Sam.

      Hi Michal, thank you very much! Great to hear you're heading to Skye next month, I hope you have some good weather! The hill where this image was taken is called Sgurr na Stri, and the route we took to it was from Kilmarie. There's a guide to the route here: www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5692 (this is actually a bit better than the route we took, which was a bit steep as we tried to head straight up the hill from Camasunary Bay!) Hi Sam, honestly your photos are always so stunning. As I'm still at the early stages of my landscape photography journey I have been watching a lot of You Tube videos from many different landscape photographers to learn as much as I can. I just wanted to let you know your videos have been so helpful and inspiring. I have learnt so much from watching you on your little adventures with Hannah and I look forward to each and every one! Scotland is on our bucket list of places to visit so hopefully when the world goes back to normal we'll make it over there one day and visit the Isle Of Skye. Looking forward to watching Part 2! Take care. 😊

We're really glad that you find our videos helpful, it really makes it all worth while to know that they're appreciated! I hope that you do make it to Skye one day. As I mentioned I watch a lot of different landscape photographers on You Tube and have learnt things from all of them but your videos are my favourite and the ones I have learnt the most from. Thanks Ian, yes I think it's an appropriate adjective! They are really impressive, but also quite ominous, I've heard it said before that they are as close to an 'alpine' landscape as we have in the UK and I'd certainly agree. Spectacular, and definitely worth a visit! S.

As we usually just head straight up to my parent's place in the north west, or the cairngorms for the wildlife, there were so many areas we hadn't explored before so this trip was a great excuse to head to those spots and there are still a few more on the list I need to get to, such a wonderful place! I was so looking forward to this video and it didn't disappoint! Wonderful intro Sam and loved the image taken with the S1R at 7:26. When you was stood looking over Camasunary I must admit to having a tinge of jealousy..lol. The river crossing when I stayed in the bothy was a bit dicey and we intended walking around to the bad step but the light was failing so we did the sensible thing and retreated. Our ai was to explore the next day but we had to cut short our trip as my lad got a call about a job back in Wales and we also wanted to do Ben Nevis so hiked back to the car at Elgol and dove to Fort Bill - it's a place I have always wanted to revisit. I'll be honest when you was doing your pece to camera about the flat light n clouds I was feeling for you but part having spent a trip to Skye with clear blue skies I can tell you mood works better... an then you presented your images - reccy or not they were fab and showed up the mood of the Cuillins perfectly, I would have been very happy to come away with them for sure! Cracking stuff Sam.... look forward to the next episode. Atb Al PS How did you find the S1R, I take it you had it on loan or hve you invested in it? I had it for a few weeks and this week I have taken possesion of the S5.. loved my Pansonic G9 so a FF version that didn't weigh a tonne was just what I wanted.

    • @BosePhotography
      @BosePhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Alan, really appreciate that! I'm glad it didn't disappoint! The S1R was just a loan unfortunately, Tom persuaded me to try one and they were extremely helpful in timing it to coincide with the trip. It took a bit of getting used to initially, but I definitely warmed to it and the image quality is truly spectacular. Really glad to hear you have gone for an S5, we might try one out as well. It sounds like the perfect camera for your needs (the S1R was a bit too much of a tank really so the S5 would be a better choice for us as well). It will be hard to pull us away from Canon, but we have been extremely impressed with the images from the Lumix, I really can't fault it!
      Sorry to hear you had to cut your visit to Camasunary short, but it sounds like you did the sensible thing by retreating when you did. I'd definitely love to head back there, but I'd camp next time (we were paying for an airBnB so it would have been a waste to spend a night out on this occasion). I'm sure we will be back there again though! It turned into a very long day, hiking there and back again, so a stop over would definitely be more sensible. I was pleased with how the images came out, and definitely some cloud suits the moodiness well, but I'm still longing to get back there on a clearer evening with some golden hour light!
      Thanks as ever for watching,
      Sam.

      Hi Andrew, it was great to finally make it back up there and explore a few more places that were new to us, I can't believe it has taken us so long to get to Skye ourselves, but we'll definitely be back there again soon if we can. We especially loved the time we spent on Harris as well. I did try hard to persuade Hannah to take a few pics on this outing, between us we had three full frame cameras on this trip so no excuse! She much prefers photographing wildlife to landscapes (she has her own video coming up on otters), but she did take some stunning sunrise shots in Torridon! Sam.

    • @BosePhotography
      @BosePhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Don, yes it was really tough seeing just how much plastic had washed up. I'm glad that awareness is increasing but the scale of the issue is immense. Still, there are some schemes that are doing a lot of great work. Cal Major's Paddle Against Plastic project is just one example. We also spent some time in Durness where they have a beach cleaning scheme that's making a huge difference (I struggled to find any plastic on one beach there). Still, it's just scratching the surface of course but every little helps!
