I really can´t believe why this song wasn´t a smash back in 1977/1978...It´s so perfect and unique rock n roll...Freddie vocals, the lyrics, the main riff, the chorus...Everything is just made to be a hit

    • @carolinepalmer5821
      @carolinepalmer5821 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It’s a little too slow for a hit. If they skipped the beginning and go straight to the main part and tapping solo and the end. Damn that would be a hit but it is 6 minutes and repeats.

@@carolinepalmer5821 aww, but I love the lyrics so much. Definitely one of my favorites - the back and forth monologue from the one night stand to the wife and back to the one night stand. It just has this “closing time” mood of loneliness that I can imagine touring must have felt like.

    • @carolinepalmer5821

@@ItsVictoriaG Yeah, do you mind explaining what the song is about. I thought it was about a one night stand, but you know how Brian is a private man and doesn't give a lot of answers away to his songs. I think he had some relationships while on tour, but he rarely admits it. I would love to understand how loneness led to a one night stand, but then made a bandmate even lonelier. idk You seem super passionate about the song so any insight would be awesome, go for it >

@@carolinepalmer5821 We know that all four of the guys weren’t perfect angels; they’ve admitted that. So in my mind, at least from the perspective of the song, that means cheating physically but not emotionally.
There are three verses and everyone interprets songs differently. But the way I see it is that each verse is a different night. The first and third verses are one night stands on tour, and the second verse is when the protagonist is at home with their spouse.
Verse one: he straight up sings that he’s with this girl who’s throwing around “I love you” in the throes of passion, obviously mistaking lust for love. Because he doesn’t even know her name and she’s in love with the /idea/ of him, of this rockstar persona.
He knows that he doesn’t really love her, but he can imagine himself getting carried away and saying “I love you” in the heat of the moment, too. But if he does... he knows he only has his lack of self-control in the moment to blame.
But he’s so lonely and isolated, (travel, perform, sleep, repeat) he imagines a universe where he actually could fall in love with this stranger, in a simpler world.
And then he’s “bleeding inside” with guilt, because he realizes that it’s only a fantasy and he actually just hopped into bed with her because she wanted him and GOD, did it boost his ego to feel wanted. And God, did it feel good to not go back to an empty hotel room, alone with his thoughts about how he can’t be with his family.
The first “it’s late, it’s late, it’s late, but not too late” isn’t the protagonist talking. It’s the nameless girl speaking while he’s in this post-coital state of regret and numbness. Is she speaking to him, offering to be with him no matter the cost? Or is she speaking to herself and he overhears her own self-doubt? I don’t know.
Then the second verse, the protagonist is back with their spouse, “the sweetest love around.” But the more he tries to keep it together, to keep touring and earning a living while also staying faithful, the more he fails. The harder he works, the more it’s likely to happen again and the more he “lets [her] down.”
But the wife can’t do this anymore, she can’t handle the tours and the cheating and the merry-go-round of having a husband and father to the kids and then being a single mom for 6 months and knowing her husband is unfaithful all the while. This time, the protagonist is saying, “it’s late, it’s late, it’s late, but not too late.” He knows he cheated and lived the rockstar life of excess one too many times, but he’s also begging his wife to stay together, that it’s not too late for their relationship and for him to change. (“I’ve been wrong but I’ll learn to be right.”) So did the wife keep him? Or was it too late for our dear protagonist?
Into the third verse, we’re on the next tour. The protagonist is staving off the loneliness of everyone knowing who you are but essentially being trapped by your fame, relegated to the hotel room and the arena. So he falls into the same routine even though he said he would change.
Another performance, another one night stand. But this time, the woman isn’t deluded into thinking she can be with the protagonist. She knows they’re from different worlds and he has his own life. And the media exists; she knows that he’s technically a family man. (“What game are you playing?”) And the protagonist is unable to respond because he knows she has him all figured out.
Unlike with the first nameless girl, this girl’s honestly doesn’t allow the protagonist to ignore the promises he made to his family back home in exchange for a brief ego boost and companionship. She has him facing his life choices. (“You make me wonder, did I live my life right?”)
But the protagonist knows that it’s basically over with his wife regardless, hence “time to set [him] free.” Then there’s the fire metaphor for passion and lust, only to be exchanged for guilt once the metaphorical water of the morning after extinguishes the lust.
And then the lyrics circle back to “it’s late, it’s late, it’s late”
But this time, there’s finality: “it’s all too late.”
And the protagonist, in his desperation to not be lonely, is left utterly alone.
But please don’t take my word as Gospel truth; it’s just my interpretation. The lyrics just paint such a VIVID picture in my mind, and the lazy rhythm adds to that morning after haze and shame. And the way the repetition/symmetry of the lyrics across the verses is broken at the end, when it’s suddenly “all too late” instead of “not too late” - it hits me hard. So many feels.

@@ItsVictoriaG Wow... You are amazing. I love to dive deep into Queen songs, especially Brian songs because I relate to him the most. I have so many thoughts and ideas, but they are hard to write down. You did a wonderful job analyzing the song, you absolutely nailed it. I can't disagree with any of our ideas, they are head on; especially since I never quite understood true love until recently, I will let your mind theorize why, so you are helping me understand what the tour life must be like. I always heard in interviews that is hard, and coming home after the band decided to not tour anymore was detrimental to their relationships. I never knew why or what they meant until recently, and your interpretation of the song helps a ton. I love Brian songs since they are always up to interpretation, yet I know there is an answer somewhere, that he may confirm later, such as with White Queen.

I think Adam generally does a fine job, but this one definetely doesn't sound convincing with Adam's vocal. Too thin and very far from Freddie's raw and powerful vocal.

It would feel sad and the height of disrespect to Freddie’s memory. I mean, c’mon, I can’t believe people would honestly enjoy that, it would be an insult and a mockery. Adam is NOT an imitator, NOT an impersonator. He is himself, he does the songs his own way, the way he feels them. He is his own artist and performs in his own style. Brian and Roger gave Adam that freedom, to sing and interpret their music the way he personally felt it. And, in my opinion, he breathes new life into Queen and is a breath of fresh air for them. And that is why they wanted Adam and not a sound a like. Do you really think they would want to go on stage and hear someone imitating their dear friend’s voice night after night?
