  • Here's a short video of my 1974 Duster that I bought in 2016 and sold in 2020. My apologies for the poor audio quality. This car had 49,847 original miles on it when I purchased it, and 63,661 miles when I sold it. It was almost all original with the exception of the quarter panels which had been replaced. It had its original 225 cubic inch six cylinder engine and A-904 automatic transmission. It was a very basic car, with few options that included power steering, an AM radio and the Gold Duster package. I spent the first year removing any incorrect components and replacing them with refurbished stock original parts to keep it as correct as possible. The car was Ziebart rustproofed when new, which explains the black inner fenders in the engine compartment. Though underpowered, it was a blast to drive and had that 1970's feel to it. I purchased it to recreate my first car, which was also a 1974 Plymouth Duster with the Gold Duster package that I bought before my senior year in college. I restored it as a "tribute car" to honor the memory of my college classmates from the Class of 1978 at the University of Notre Dame. Note the vintage Notre Dame parking sticker in the left quarter window, and the 1974 Minnesota license plates with May of 1978 (our graduation month) tabs. Enjoy!

Thank you, Chris. I sold this car last fall to a family that'll give it a very good home and keep it stock. If you like stock Dusters and want to see my current car, go to a website called "For A Bodies Only", and type "Bob's 1974 Space Duster" in the search bar. Enjoy!

I had this exact car (snakeskin and all) as a college student in the late 70s and early 80s. Slant 6 was a sweet engine, I added an after market intake and filter, some carb mods cragars all around and cherry bomb straight pipes. Oh, and a stereo with some bangin alpine 3 ways in the back deck. Problem was I am from Rochester (pronounced “rot-yer-car”) NY so the car earned its nickname (“the gold ruster”). Loved it but had to sell it when the road spray started getting my pant wet…. Thanks for the tour, you have done a great job with the car and I can confirm it is essentially all original.

Very nice. One clever thing about this car was the windshield squirter - that rubber thing you press with your foot. Bug squat a little higher? Push harder. Bugs squat lower on the windshield? Don't push as hard!

Man o man that thing is mint! Very nice. I love the originality. I’m a stickler for original equipment as well. My dad has a 73 duster 340 that he has owned since new. He special ordered it in fact. It has 66k original miles, all original and untouched. I love that car and the 340.

VWguy76 - Thanks for the nice comment about the factory stock restoration. I always felt that there are a million and one ways to modify a car, but only one correct factory original configuration. That's just my inclination, and I'd never tell another guy what to do with his car. That's what I love about the survivor cars. It's the best of both worlds to me. You have both the correct factory configuration, but retain all the originality without erasing the car's history with a full ground up resto.

My first car at 16 (1980) was a 73 Gold Duster. Smaller bumper, and mine was a softer tan color with your vinly top. 318 V-8 auto, it was a very good first car until my good friend totaled it.

It is awesome that you restored it back to factory condition. The Gold Duster was such a sharp looking car. It always saddens me when people hot rod them out and take away the original character that they had.

Mike - Thanks for the nice comments. Your 1973 Duster 340 is a rare bird nowadays, and I hope you keep it forever. Please DO post a video of it. I've had a blast restoring my 1974, and have had excellent luck scouring the salvage yards in western Minnesota finding correct, original factory equipment for it. I've recently found and decoded the broadcast sheet as well. I'm thinking about posting a TH-cam video of driving impressions of my Duster, the gist of which is "Don't plan on starting fast (underpowered six cylinder engine) and don't plan on stopping fast (manual disc brakes)". Since I posted the original video, I've had the opportunity to put the Duster on the chassis dynamometer at our annual Mopar show here in Minneapolis, and this baby is packing 79 dyno certified rear wheel horsepower and 137 ft. lbs of torque. Which probably explains why I spend a lot of my driving time with the accelerator pedal all the way down on the floor - something my one barrel motor is happy to do all day long.

In 77' my father gave me his 74' "yellow" duster with the 225-105hp automatic, power steering, manual brakes and am radio.. my father bought it new at readmans in Langhorne p.a. and he hated the car from day 1.. it only got 13mpg no matter what gas you used, would also over run when turned off! I had it 2 years before trading it in on a 79' Plymouth roadrunner 360-195hp car.. I could get the duster to 88mph.. it was an $39 dollars option over the 198-95hp slant six..

Yeah, I agree Lori. Last November I put 4540 miles in eleven days on another slant six 1974 Duster that I own . The motor absolutely ran like a top the entire time. The car averaged about 14.7 mpg with mostly 73 mph highway driving.

I got a Gold Duster in 1992 with a little over 70,000 miles on it. It was the dark brown color with what looked like gold flakes in the paint. It had the 318 c.i. V-8 2-barrel carburetor and the 7 1/4 " rear end. The body and tan bench seat interior were perfect except for the driver's seat bottom. Weird thing though. The body looked like it had been garage kept it's whole life, but I don't think they knew anything about motor maintenance. I had been driving it for about 3 years when I pulled the valve cover and I could see no bolts (?) All across the top of the head where there should have been bolts there was this shiny, slightly wavy black ceramic looking material. I put a large screw driver on it and hit it with a hammer. Barely scratched it. I finally smacked the top of the head with a hammer really hard. The material shattered just like ceramic would. I'm starting to figure out what happened. They must have NEVER changed the oil, they would just top it off! WTF! How could this motor run so well with 70,000 miles of little pieces of metal from the engine being used to lubricate the engine. Then I looked at the camshaft, because you can see the lobes through the top of the cam valley. Up to a 1/4" long chunks of metal missing on every lobe. WOW!! I just had a rebuilt engine put in (was working 65 hours a week) went ahead and had the A904 transmission rebuilt with a shift kit and got a dual exhaust. A buddy of mine helped me find an 8 1/4 " rear end in a Duster in a junk yard. We pulled the cover off and when we looked inside it looked like the previous owner had had it rebuilt just before he totaled the car it was in. Once I had bigger u- bolts made to attach it to the leaf springs(they torched the bolts to get it out of the car) and had the driveshaft shortened it was a great running car. Friends at work had seen me around town getting a hard 2nd gear scratch and asked if I had a 3-speed or 4-speed manual trans. Gotta love a shift kit. Not a race car by any means, but I was on Beltway 8, which goes around Houston, and raced a small BMW. I was just cruising at 80 mph and he pulled up next to me and honked his horn and pointed straight ahead I had never top ended it so I was surprised when the speedo got to 120 mph. 2.73 gears helped I'm sure. What surprised me though, was that at the top end I was slowly pulling away from the BMW. At the time I knew which BMW it was so I looked through my magazines and found out it had been governed to only 119 mph. That explained it! Sold it for $1200 in 2000. I sure had a lot of fun in it! :)

Sweet Duster... Give it about 6 degrees BTDC ignition timing and use Premium Fuel. The car won't feel so underpowered. My Brown 75 Duster I did this and woke that turd up. Put a lighter spring in place of the heavier one in your distributor advance springs for quicker advance. Just Snag a light one from the junkyard if you can. Would actually squeal tires. No Monster but helped alot. And shot up to 26 mpg. Stepping up to a 3.21 gear really helps alot also with performance. Had a 72 Dart Slant Six with 3.21s once I gave that timing and better fuel it was like a lazy 318 V8 almost. That car could do a burnout....Even with a Slant Six. And a Shift kit n your Torque Flight Transmission is Always a Big Cheap Easy Plus. And makes it last forever. The Dart with 3.21s was known to let out a faint yip of the right rear tire when hitting second gear. Ran 17.20 at Milan Dragway. Wasn't bad. For a Slant Six Car. Don't be afraid to tune a lil performance into it. Driving a Slant Six can be fun and great on gas if tuned properly. It doesn't have to be mundane. The Brown Turd Duster with 2.76 gears would go 110 mph after tuning. Best of luck with your Duster. Happy Cruising.

jbmopar1971 - thanks. Yeah, I wanted it to be exactly right, so I went to great lengths to get the right hose clamps. When I got the car only two of he original heater or radiator hose clamps were still there. So I scoured my favorite salvage yard for the correct original ones. I could have bought new repro spring clamps, but that wouldn't fit the aged look of the car. I found original decent, serviceable ones on wrecked cars and transferred them to my engine. I'd rather have the real original thing on my car, complete with some aging on it, than some shiny repro made in Taiwan last year. My other pet peeve is batteries. I think a modern battery harms the vintage look of the engine compartment, so I got one of the correct original style batteries with yellow caps. Love the vintage look this gives the motor!

The odds of any car surviving on the roads for over 40 years is amazing. The odds are that in that amount of time, every car would be in at least one or two extremely serious accidents. The kind that totals cars forever. Hence, the name survivor because they beat the odds.
