  • Duster fans, here is a video of my 1974 Plymouth Gold Duster that I bought in April of 2019. I am the fourth owner of the car. It was very well maintained by the first owner who kept it until 2010. The car has had one repaint in the original color of Tahitian Gold Metallic. It has a number of options including the 225 cubic inch slant six engine with the Torqueflite A-904 automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, the Space Duster Pak (folding rear seat), the light package and deluxe noise reduction package, tinted glass all around, an AM radio and 14 inch Rallye wheels. The Rallye wheels are the original wheels, and the spare tire wheel is the factory original stamped steel wheel still in its black paint. I have restored the car back to stock specifications and it now lives in a clean, secure and dry environment. I love the way it drives, and the engine runs smoothly and fires right up as soon as you turn the key. Enjoy the video and feel free to add your Duster stories in the comment section. (BTW I did not want, authorize or ask for any ads to be run before, during or after this video. TH-cam added them without asking me.).

    what Plymouth gave with Duster was a reliable, economical car with style...it was often a first car and beloved

    Wow, this brings back some memories! My very first car was a 1974 Plymouth Gold Duster, bought it from my grandfather the summer between high school and college. Same interior and exterior colors as the one in the video, although mine had hubcaps and the venerable 318 engine. It was your basic reliable transportation, and much easier to work on! I seem to recall replacing the alternator once in about 15 or 20 minutes .

    Bravo for restoring, maintaining, and loving a humble Slant Six car…….!!!!!
    Loads of charm and the personal touch of the re-created college parking sticker is a perfect cherry on top of the sundae!
    As a high schooler back in the early 80’s, our school parking lot was full of neat little cars like this - Dusters, Darts, Mavericks, Vegas, Pintos, etc……!!!!!

      Thanks, ddellwo. I graduated high school in 1974 and even then we'd see a lot of Dusters, Darts and Valiants in the parking lot. Most of them however, had "Minnesota Disease" which could be identified by football sized holes rusted through the sheetmetal behind all four wheels. These durable A-Body Mopars usually didn't die due to mechanical breakdown, but rather from catastrophic corrosion related failures. Most often it was the rear mounting point of the leaf springs rusting off the frame and penetrating through the trunk floor. Game over at that point, and it was off to the salvage yard to be parted out. But yeah, a very dependable and economical ride for a high school senior back in the day. Most of your money back then went into taking out your girlfriend, and not into the car. Great memories!

      @@6828oaklawn - I know all about Minnesota corrosion - grew up in Shakopee!
      When I moved to Texas back in the mid-90’s I couldn’t believe all the older cars that were driving around with nary a spec of rust on them! My wife was worried I was going to get shot in a parking lot because I’d walk up to these old vehicles and start feeling around the fender lips for rust - NONE……😮

    My dad bought a 72 Gold Duster new when I was around 5 years old. It was white with a gold alligator top and it had the tasmanian devil cartoon guy on the back panel. The interior looked just like yours. Same slant 6 engine. I loved that car. By the time I was coming of age in the 80s it was rusting pretty bad and kinda banged up. He sold it for 50 bucks to a friend of my sisters who was off to college someplace. Years later we heard that guy had put something like 50,000 more miles on it before finally sending her off to pasture. What a deal.

    Second car I ever owned was a Dodge Dart Sport in that exact same body style, except slightly different taillights and a racing stripe. Once we went camping on Cape Cod and somehow fit 2 touring bicycles plus all of our camping gear in the back. Unfortunately the frame rusted out around the torsion bar and the suspension collapsed. Tried to get somebody to fix it, but as soon as I said the word "rust" they lost interest pretty quick, and so it was junked. But for next 25 years I drove nothing but mid-70s Darts and Valiants. My favorite was a 76 Swinger with a slant 6 and 3-speed on the column, of which I've never seen or heard of another before or since.

    This was my first car. I had the Gold Duster package with the snakeskin top and an off white color with a 318. That fold down seat was awesome and pretty novel back then. I ended up painting it candy apple red metal flake with a white “Starsky and Hutch” like stripe that went over the roof. The stripe actually looked a lot better on the Duster than the Torino. Keystone mags to finish off the aesthetics. The one big negative to the 74 version was the introduction of all kinds of pollution control crap. They introduced the 360 to try to keep up with the old 340. But the 340 was a beast that I coveted at the time. The only reason I didn’t opt for the 360 was insurance costs.

    • @6828oaklawn
      @6828oaklawn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point, Richard. I never understood Chrysler's decision to scrap the 340. My compliments on your red and white Duster- a mighty sharp looking car!

    • @dangeroreilly2028
      @dangeroreilly2028 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@6828oaklawn Yes, switching to a "toned down" 360 was their response to meet new EPA standards. I lived it. I had a '76 360, white buckets interior, auto tran on floor console. Powder blue body, white body stripe and tail stripes, and a white canopy roof styled like on your gold duster.
      I love how this was restored, so it looks so much like it just would have rolled off factory line, even down to the replica battery!

    • @6828oaklawn
      @6828oaklawn  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dangeroreilly2028 Thanks, danger. I'll bet your powder blue/white Duster was quite the looker! I loved the console shifter in these cars and kinda wish that I had one. My compliments on your keen eye in the engine compartment. Yes, that is a reproduction battery that is identical externally to the factory original batteries of the 1970s. The big difference is that this is an AGM (absorptive glass mat) battery that contains no acid and can never leak. Do you recall how all the cars back then had a great deal of corrosion around the battery? This forever eliminates this problem, and I love the vintage look. The one in my Duster was purchased in 2016 and still runs perfectly. If you love these old Dusters, there are still a lot of fairly affordable ones out there and you might enjoy getting into the hobby again. They're endlessly fun to work on, and as you can see even an unskilled person like myself can make a fifty year old car with over a quarter million miles on it look almost new. Best of luck and thanks for watching!

    Love the car Bob, color and everything is beautiful I fell in love with the Plymouth duster in middle school when as a Christmas gift I got a Beautiful very detailed model of the duster in black with the 340 sticker on the hood etc. Ever since this had been my dream car I would be totally fine with the slant 6 engine as well as I love efficiency and reliability, was just wandering did you redo the vinyl top yourself if not who gets the credit?

    • @6828oaklawn
      @6828oaklawn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the nice compliment, Jerry. I like your taste in Dusters, too! Yeah, the vinyl top was quite a project. It came white from the factory, and when I purchased the car in 2019 it was already on its second white vinyl roof. I decided to go with the "reptile grain" roof to replace the original. The only place that had it was Legendary Auto Interiors, and it took forever to get here. They had to specially cut one from their stock of 1972 vinyl, and it was way more expensive that the standard white roof. I would never try to install it myself, and had an experienced body guy do it for me. I'm very happy with the result.

    That's an absolute beauty! Thanks for sharing it. Is that the 198 cc slant-six or is it a 225 cc ? Those engines were indestructible. We had a Dart, a Valiant and a Duster in the house, back in the 1970's.

    • @6828oaklawn
      @6828oaklawn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the nice compliment. I find the Duster to be very easy to work on and clean up. The engine is the optional 225 cubic inch "slant six" engine, which was an extra cost option as the standard motor was a 198 cubic inch six. To upgrade from the 198 to the 225 cost exactly $38.30. And yeah, they had a reputation for being indestructible. When I bought the car in Portland OR in the spring of 2019, I immediately noticed that there was no visible coolant in the radiator. I asked the owner (who didn't know much about cars) about this, and she confirmed that she had been driving the car around like this. Ouch! I've also heard stories of people driving them with no oil visible on the dipstick, although I doubt that even a slant six would last very long with no oil. Sounds like you had a number of "A" body cars back in the day - my compliments! People are really starting to take a liking to these cars, so if you're thinking about getting back into one I'd do it soon before they become too expensive. Thanks again and all my best!

      Yes, all Mopar products featured electronic ignition starting with the 1970 model year. Mine has it, and I have refurbished the ignition system by replacing the electronic control module (ECM), electronic voltage regulator, ballast resistor, all plug wires and plugs, and rebuilt the original alternator. Works perfectly - never have any problems with it!

      Just checked my Chrysler - Plymouth factory ordering book for 1974. There was no "over the top" tape stripe at roof level available on the Duster in 1974. I believe that the Dodge Dart offered this stripe. The Gold Duster package included a front to rear full length tape stripe at door handle level, and also another tape stripe across the rear between the tail lights. This stripe was deleted on my car because it was ordered with the optional full length rub strips on either side instead of the tape stripes. When you mentioned the front door, I'm assuming that you just meant "door" as the Duster is a coupe with two doors, not a sedan with front or rear doors on either side. Thanks.

    Nice car, do u have drum brakes all around? did the brake booster come as factory or did u add it in? if so how do you see braking working after adding the booster? thanks

    • @6828oaklawn
      @6828oaklawn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The car has its original factory installed braking system with no modifications. It has power disc brakes up front and drum brakes in the rear. The power disc/drum brake setup was a factory option, as the standard braking setup was four wheel manual (non-power) brake system. Both the master cylinder and brake vacuum booster have been rebuilt. That's why the vacuum booster has a shiny new look. They came from the factory gold anodized like that. This gold finish wears off over time and was renewed by the company that rebuilt the booster. So I did not add the booster. It came from the factory like that in October of 1973. The car brakes very well. The six cylinder engine is quite a bit lighter than a V-8 engine, so there's not much weight up front for the brakes to overcome. This means the car stops very quickly, but it does not have modern anti-lock technology so the driver must be aware of this. Overall, its a very simple, reliable and effective braking system - perfect for this car.
