Thanks for the review, Tom. I ordered this from the publisher after you sang this game's praises in another video several days ago. It just came in the mail today and I'm really looking forward to getting it to the table!

Now they need to make an expansion that fleshes out the actual questing. Perhaps something along the lines of how exploration worked in Starship Catan? Something simple, yet exciting in that you don't know what you'll encounter each step you take. Could be loot, could be a fight.

It sounds a lot like the bongo (?) solo from 'Move on up', but it isn't. Maybe just some royalty free sound-a-like?

I think I'll start a geeklist called "Games that don't kill Splendor for Tom Vasel"

I was happy that I Kickstarted this one. Everyone I have taught to play really enjoyed it and it is one of the few games that has a good level of depth to it that I can get my family to play. Tom was spot on with his review in that at first it reminded me of Splendor (and Century Road), but even more interesting options. Great game.

It looks like a good game, but are you sure the games are fast? BGG indicates 1 to 2 hours.

This looks like a better, more robust Bargain Quest. Looks fun!

This looks fun but a lot of little rules and many different components that don't seem to work together fluidly. Would definitely like to try it though.

I've only played the pre-release version, but it was not even remotely a Splendor-killer.
I hope a few aspects of the game have changed. Even in the first few playthroughs, the game was kind of "solved".
For instance: It became obvious that you HAVE to buy a warehouse for storage. At least the pre-release version had fewer warehouses than players. If you're turn is last and don't get to build one in a 5 player game, you will almost certainly lose.
In Kingsguild (like 7 Wonders Duel) you'll basically see it all the first playthrough and everyone sees the winning strategy immediately and the second, third and fourth game, etc, will be very same-y.
There's a couple quality of life changes from the beta, so it could be better now. But even a better game is going to be same-y after a only a few games I think.

Seems like Splendor has a contract out on it to kill it. Century Spice Road and this game are supposed games that replace it. Many other light strategy games like Orbis get compared to Splendor. What really killed Splendor, if at all, is the high cost of the expansion.
I'm actually finding that Splendor has the most staying power of all the recent comparable games that came out afterwards.

That doesn't sound "Solved" unless you consider "Solved" to be "don't have bad luck and go last". What it sounds like is that the people who go last can't hoard resources like everyone else, so either their enjoyment drops off, and the game becomes one no one plays because someone always gets the short end of the stick, or the player(s) who can't get the Warehouse have to play differently and more efficiently than the other players.

Splendor is straightforward and playable by my non-gamer parents.
This game seems to have too many rules to keep track for non-gamers and too simple for people who like medium (or heavy) eurogames.

Eh, at the end of the day it's spending resources shown on cards. Beginners can handle the rules. Whether or not they can handle the strategy to win is a different thing.

My personal experience with this game left me a lot less excited than Tom here so I'll just point out the negatives of the game (from my viewpoint). Firstly, while I agree it's fast and quick to learn I think it's replayability is pretty low. It's like a more simple version of Lords of Waterdeep where everything becomes repetitive after a few plays as, well, it is just too simple and there isn't any room for an inventive strategy. The player interaction is really low, the only interaction comes in terms of grabbing a resource, a buidling etc. that someone else wanted - that's just boring FOR ME at least. The fact that the game ends immediatelly after all quests are completed puts me off as well. This way if the first player ends the game then everyone else loses one turn, a turn which can be fundamental for your victory. I always found this mechanism to be unfair. So basically being the first player gives you a nice advantage which you will never lose as the player order never changes.
To make it clear though, it is not a BAD game but I don't think it's very good either. It is a fine simple game you can pull out once in a while and play it with newcomers easily. Just don't expect much more from it.
