My great grandmother Burke used to sing Roisin the bow to me and sometimes she would throw some Gaelic in, never been more grateful for any other heritage than my Scot/Irish I totally get it.

I am from Northern Spain, specifically Asturias. In the place I live we all get considered celts, we have bagpipes, we have whistle, we have our own language (asturian) and I can not regret that when I listen to this I think somthing of our culture remains in this song / language
Thank you for bringing us this song, I hope to someday visit Ireland and also to save the Gaelic language of its extinction, as how its happening with our asturian language.

North Spain was home to a Celtic people before the Roman Empire. Some of that culture endured the Romans, the Visigoths, and the Moorish invasions.
Also, recent evidence shows that the first people to settle Ireland sailed there from Celtic Spain circa 1100 BC. Which sorta confirms an old Irish myth.

One of my favourite bands used to be Llan de Cubel. Seen them live a couple of times back in the 90s. Not to forget Milladorio, Berrogüetto, Susana Seivane, Luar na Lubre and others. Carlos Núñez, on the other hand, was always a bit too high-powered for my taste...
      Puxa Asturias! ;O)

We stopped speaking Irish because of colonization by the British. It’s still taught in schools, but poorly, so many grow up to hate it. Irish still lives on in 'Gaeltacht' areas; small pockets of Ireland where only Irish is spoken. But most would be proud nowadays of their ability to speak a few words 'as gaeilge'(in Irish).

youtube recommented this to me after I have watched the "a mhaighdean bhàn Urasal" (Nobel maiden fair) from disneys Brave and "Amhrán na farraige" from a song of the sea.
I don´t understand one word if I don´t read the english translation but I love this language. I´m from germany and I can´t describe properly how it sounds to me.
It sounds so new and so old at the same time. It´s like a language out-of-earth and still it sounds so deeply rooted to the earth and nature.

    An Ósta lena thaobh
An triú cleas ní bfhearr domh

Is gur mhinicí domh bheith ag caitheamh

    Ins a' dúiche seo mé?
'S gur mó cailín deas a gheobhainn

Gur casadh mé isteach mar a raibh searc
    Agus rún geal mo chléibh
Is chuir an tseanbhean amach mé

    A stóirín mo chroí
Ma bhíonn tú liom, bí liom
    Os comhair an tsaoil
Ma bhíonn tú liom, bí liom
    Gach orlach de do chroí
Is é mo liom go fann nach liom
    Dé Domhnaigh thú mar mhnaoí
Tá mo cheannsa liath le bliain
    Is ní le críonnacht é
    Ní bheathaíonn na briathra
Na bráithre pé sa domhan scéal é
Is táim i do dhiaidh le bliain
Is gan fáil agam ort féin
Is gur geall le fia mé ar sliabh
Go mbeadh gáir chon ina dhéidh
    (Curfá)
    Do threabfainn, d'fhuirsinn
    Chuirfinn síol ins a' chré
    'S do dhéanfainn obair shocair
    Álainn, mhín, réidh
    Do chuirfinn crú fén each
Is mire shiúil riamh ar féar
Is ná héalaodh bean le fear
    Ná déanfadh san féin

If an Irish girl said that to you these days out of the blue on the beach, you'd be inclined to think she has a drug or alcohol problem.
At least, It is nice to see that the Irish don't spend their Sunday's in Church anymore.

Would anyone be able to help with a phonetic version of the Irish lyrics? I'm still learning, not good, but would love to learn this for my love.

Yep, Bill Wilkie! Same with me. This song has been a part of my being since the moment I first heard Michael O’ Domhmaill of Bothy Band sing it. I’m thrilled to hear Iarla O’Lionaird sing it here. Wow.

The word “cnoc” is so satisfying to hear. Also it looks bizarre.

    • @thepip3599
      @thepip3599 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think maybe English never has a “cn” (or “kn”) sound. Words like knife and knock always have the k be silent. I can’t think of any exceptions. That might be why the word sounds so fun.

English used to pronounce the 'k' in those words, that's why they are spelled that way. The spoken language evolves faster than the written one

Start with Duolingo. And then look for other speakers in your country.
They are there. Check out the results from this search: www.google.com/search?q=germany+gaeltacht&oq=germany+gaeltacht
