I live in Spain, and I doubt there is even one person in my zone who speaks irish. Songs from a woman’s POV will often be sung by men, and vice versa. Now, me being gay, that puts a whole new spin on things when I sing a song. Lol. But no one ever comments on it. In Irish gaelic "ainm a rá" means 'to speak his name'. Interesting trying understand the Scotch Gaelic. With these lyrics I understood most of them. It's not always the case though. I'm not a speaker of the Ulster dialect which has more in common with the Scotch as it migrated from there into Scotland. Lovely singing as usual. Go raibh maith agat.
It is literally "name to say", its supposed to be this, but the written one "to know his name" is a better translation to understand the intent. Basically its "a paper hat will get his name said with a dulsai dolsai dairo".. the dulsai dolsai dairo bit basically means "with music to my ears"... thats why they use "a rá" and not "fios" for know... however "to know his name" is a better translation as that is the underlying meaning which the person listening to the song needs to know, and a direct translation makes no sense in English at all.
I was confused when you called it scotch gaelic, cuz as far as can tell none of this is spelled or pronounced with Scottish. Yes. Irish spelling is odd at first, though it can be understood through tough thorough thought, just like English. It's a lot more regular, too, so it's easier to pick up in a hurry. That particular word had the consonants 'th,' which is like h, 'bh,' which is v or a soft f- or w-ish sound and often just like w in songs, 'f,' which is softer and often almost unpronounced in a lot of music that I've seen, and 'dh,' which is in this case soft and like h again. So, all told, its like 'hahaurfee' or 'hahauree'
In irish mh bh fh etc all have strange sounds. Niamh is Nee uhv Siobhan is Shee uh von. Abhaile is awalya. I probs spelled it all wrong, its been years since ive done irish
The letter h isn't a letter but an operation - it replaced a dot under consonants that would change their sound. T changes to "h" with an h after it, b and m change to "w" or "v" depending on whether a hard or soft vowel follows, and d and g change to "gh" (a guttural sound) or "y". So "hawarai".
In other dialcets however, i believe, "aidh" is sorta said as a "ig". BUT if you want a full proper database on the sounds of Irish, search for a website called fuaimeanna on google

Gaelic is a beautiful language, even if its completely unintuitive. I don't understand how someone hasn't just made a phonetic dictionary of the language.
English phonetic translations are usually just approximations of the sounds because a lot of Irish phonemes don't exist in English. Best just to learn Irish phonology with its very regular and consistent rules of pronunciation instead, learning individual words wouldn't be too hard after that.

I’ve a question, French is a romance, but it would be foolish to not acknowledge its gaelic and germanic influence. The verb “donner” means to give. Is this “dom” a potential origin for that? Like Matin and maidin. I find it fascinating how even “romance” languages can have such disparate influences.
Possibly, but probably not likely. 'Dom' comes from the preposition 'do' meaning 'to' and 'mé' meaning 'I' or 'me' Do + mé = Dom (to me) Do + tú = Duit (to you) etc. The verb 'to give' in Irish is 'Tabhair'. Although there probably is some other words in French of Celtic origin though I can't think of any off the top of my head. There's also many French words in Irish e.g. Eaglais from Église Ghiúistís from Justice Garsún from Garçon etc.

Yes. Irish spelling is odd at first, though it can be understood through tough thorough thought, just like English. It's a lot more regular, too, so it's easier to pick up in a hurry. That particular word had the consonants 'th,' which is like h, 'bh,' which is v or a soft f- or w-ish sound and often just like w in songs, 'f,' which is softer and often almost unpronounced in a lot of music that I've seen, and 'dh,' which is in this case soft and like h again. So, all told, its like 'hahaurfee' or 'hahauree'
In irish mh bh fh etc all have strange sounds. Niamh is Nee uhv Siobhan is Shee uh von. Abhaile is awalya. I probs spelled it all wrong, its been years since ive done irish
The letter h isn't a letter but an operation - it replaced a dot under consonants that would change their sound. T changes to "h" with an h after it, b and m change to "w" or "v" depending on whether a hard or soft vowel follows, and d and g change to "gh" (a guttural sound) or "y". So "hawarai".
In my Ulster dialect i would say "thabharfaidh" as either "hore-fee" or "hore-hee"
In other dialcets however, i believe, "aidh" is sorta said as a "ig". BUT if you want a full proper database on the sounds of Irish, search for a website called fuaimeanna on google

@@ImaginaryMdA yes, that was the joke I was making. Irish spelling is phonetic and regular, albeit with odd rules, while English spelling is just a mess. I used normal English orthography to represent the phonemes in those words in order to illustrate that point. English is my first language.

"ar" instead of "are" . I assume it was a spellcheck issue if it was turned on. Typing Irish with English spellcheck on it's easy to miss small words such as prepositions or particles that resemble English ones

I think 'ar ainm a rá' might be better translated as 'to say his name' rather than 'to know his name'. Because 'a rá' would mean 'to say' or 'to utter'. As far as my rusty leaving cert Irish from a long time ago tells me.

Gaelic is a beautiful language, even if its completely unintuitive. I don't understand how someone hasn't just made a phonetic dictionary of the language.
English phonetic translations are usually just approximations of the sounds because a lot of Irish phonemes don't exist in English. Best just to learn Irish phonology with its very regular and consistent rules of pronunciation instead, learning individual words wouldn't be too hard after that.

I’ve a question, French is a romance, but it would be foolish to not acknowledge its gaelic and germanic influence. The verb “donner” means to give. Is this “dom” a potential origin for that? Like Matin and maidin. I find it fascinating how even “romance” languages can have such disparate influences.
Possibly, but probably not likely.
'Dom' comes from the preposition 'do' meaning 'to' and 'mé' meaning 'I' or 'me'
Do + mé = Dom (to me)
Do + tú = Duit (to you) etc.
The verb 'to give' in Irish is 'Tabhair'.
Although there probably is some other words in French of Celtic origin though I can't think of any off the top of my head.
There's also many French words in Irish
e.g. Eaglais from Église
Ghiúistís from Justice
Garsún from Garçon etc.

It doesn't have a meaning, it's a vocable. Same way in English singers say things like "la la la". A good example would be Scat singing in Jazz.
It's a refrain not necessarily with meaning such as "Tura, lura, lura, lura, lae" etc.
I don't understand a word but it is good.
