- If your dog is not paying attention to you on the walk, and they’re pulling you all over the place, sniffing the grass everywhere, peeing on everything that stands up, that’s not a productive walk.
Remember, the walk is not about just a physical action of walking down the street. You have to remember the dogs can walk further than you can. The walk is about focus and engagement. The more that your dog is paying attention to you, and focusing on what you want from them, the better! This provides an extremely healthy amount of mental stimulation, as well as develop a very good relationship on leash with your dog. If you allow them to dictate where and what they want to do on leash, what is stopping them from pulling you to the dog or squirrel across the street.
The truth of the matter is, you don’t have to go far when you walk your dog. You could practice this in your driveway, or in a church parking lot! All that matters is that you actually practice it.
A few pointers to remember while you are practicing these exercises. It’s best to work a hungry dog. Start and low level distraction areas if possible. Always keep your dog on the cement and not on the grass, and if you’re struggling on the sidewalk move to the street. When you turn left use your body to turn into your dog, and when you turn right give a little bit more slack. Practice stopping and doing nothing with your dog while you put them in a sit and just hang out.
Wow so informative and glad the parents seemed to grasp the information as well! Getting a dog soon and will be trying all of this with updates :)
This is such a phenomenal video! Thanks for posting! I love that you say heel means change - sit means of course, sit down but also you don't get to go anywhere yet pal. Nice job!
Thank you for good instructions, and huge thanks 🙏 for not playing distracting music under the video
Great instructions. Heading out too take my pup out for a walk and put this in practice.
This was perfect! Definitely reassured me that I’m doing it correctly! Thank you! Please keep them coming! 💕💕
Solid. This drill is going to help a lot. I’m training my first larger dog. Plus yiz are in my home town the Burgh so you are obviously 100% legit
These can create a lot of torque on the dogs head, leading to a lot of pain in their neck which can also cause damage. Their skin is a lot thinner than ours which means tissue damage can happen very easily. The only way to teach a dog to walk on a loose lead is by lots of repetition using either a Y shaped harness or flat collar during training sessions, short lengths frequently until the new behaviour (walk on a nice loose lead) becomes engrained. There should be no quick fixes in dog training and equipment should never replace time and teaching a dog. These are aversive to the dog, that's why they work. An amazing, qualified Dog Trainer explained to me that the practice and repetition of teaching your dog loose lead with short lengths at first is to help them travel new neural pathways. The more those neural pathways are travelled, the wider they become so that the new behaviour (walking on a lovely loose lead) becomes engrained and the dog doesn't even have to think about it. It is how all mammals learn. However dogs can be very complex in how they learn and association and any pain or discomfort from a head collar (which is why they walk nicely on these things) can lead to negative associations with everything around them, even things that are not related, even the handler. Invest in a qualified, force free Dog Trainer who can evidence their accredited qualifications and understands learning theory, you won't regret it and your dog will thank you for it.
Great video! Any reason why the dog goes on your left? I always thought it was better to have them on the right so it’s easier to have me in between my dog and other people or dogs on the sidewalk.
Sometimes when I do this with my 5 m/o Aussiedoodle, he starts jumping and biting my arms and shoes. He learns quickly but I am struggling to train him out of it…
Have you thought about doing a course on this... Your good and I can help
My dog is a baby Great Dane. I don't want to teach him to go between my legs, lol. How can I modify this drill for horses? Lol
Which collar did you switch to?? It worked very well and seems to sit high on the neck.
How do you teach "free" ? Like if I want my dog to be able to go sniff etc..
Just curious.. i do a lot of sit/stay/come but if i say free she just stares at me like.. that's not a command.. what am i supposed to do?
What does heel mean, I know the word, but I want similar word in my native language, ist like change direction or just change?
It means stay by my side and do not walk ahead of me.
I guess in Polish this would be "Do nogi". "Heel" does not really mean "change direction", it means "stay by my side - i.e. by my leg (whichever direction I go)".
Does the heeling dog’s body position in relation to my body position matter? 4-H taught us the shoulder should be in line with my hip, but my German Shepherd keeps my hip in her rib cage area...
All my dog wants to do is go to the grass, how do I keep her attention on me?
My dog knows heel in stores but going for a walk he wants to pee in every tree. I’ve seen other dog owners let them but I don’t really like it. How can I stop it?
Dont let him go to the tree. Keep moving.
Can I teach this to my 9 year old Husky Lab mix that has always run our walks or is it too late for him?
It’s never too late, you really can teach an old dog new tricks :) consistency is key
I tried doing this but when I try this she just sits down what would you do?
In these videos, I get the concept, which is sound. All the dogs seem on their way to obedience. What about a two month old maniacal puppy? Everything is a distraction, biting the leash is more fun than treats. "Settle" is sometimes successful; sometimes results in the Tasmanian devil trying to escape. Advice?
Exactly my problem! Mine gets distracted by EVERYTHING, dog barks or person walks by and he needs to go see and barely listens to me. I’m starting back at the basics just walking around my basement with him on the leash and doing these figure 8s and he’s doing good, and I’m starting to add barking sound tracks from my phone as a pretend distraction. Hopefully next we can go outside and have more luck!
I think also some of this will come with time... being a puppy everything is new so they want to experience it all!
I want walk whit out leash you cant show me how?
