    The right about-turn is much easier to teach than the left about-turn is, so I would suggest starting there. It will also help if your dog already knows the markers (conditioned reinforcers), the concept of leash pressure, walking backward, and power steering.
    This exercise is not only fun to perform with your dog, but it will also improve your heel command and loose leash walking.

    I have always loved animals especially dogs but despite my best intentions of actually 'training' them beyond what was required for the breed I am now in a better position to be more focused on broadening what and how I teach. You have a wonderful presentation and skill set that I am going to practice with enthusiasm and determination to be a better trainer. You motivate me in many ways to be the best I can be. • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Don't feel bad about a slower spin. Often the dogs genetics can play a roll in how fast they will perform the spin command. However, you can try some of the strategies in my "Speed up your dogs commands" video to increase your pups speed. th-cam.com/video/8I7e7NbFWpE/w-d-xo.html :)

    Great tip on training with earbuds in!! I've been wondering how to make training more energetic for both of us, as a with a lot of the things we're working on (left and right turns included!) it's so repetitive I've been getting really bored and the dog totally knows it! In this video, Arih walks backwards really beautifully- Loki now knows the commands for walking backwards, and walking backwards in a heel, but instead of walking nicely, he is pretty jerky and sort of bunny-hops backwards, and then will shuffle forward again to self correct into a proper heel position. Is this a result of something we've done wrong while training him? Or is it something that will become more natural for him with time?
    Thanks again!

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question, Chloe. I would have to see a video to give you a good answer to your question. However, a lot of dogs can take a little while to really figure out how their body works. Usually with practice the can perform the behavior with a little more finesse. I would also work on the backward walk a little more out of the heel position and have him walk backward on different platforms, so he can become more aware of his backend.

    Your dog is hyper-focused on you. Is this because of the food lure? If not how do you accomplish this? My GSD (1.5 yrs) is so chill - he doesn't get distracted, just does things at his own pace. He's also not overly food/treat-motivated which makes it more of a challenge. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question and this is why I use mealtime as training time. Meaning, I make the dog/puppy work for every bite. When they work for it, it increases the value of the food. With a puppy, I will often start with a high-quality dry food during the training process. I also usually give the puppy raw goat milk from answers, to help ensure the dog is getting enough quality nutrition. In addition, I train with freeze-dried dog food, but that can be very pricey. Usually, a high-quality kibble will be okay. I transition them to raw when all the main training is completed. However, I do continue to train the dog for the entire life of the dog. It’s just as important and playing and bonding. Lastly, engagement training will also help with your dogs focus. You can learn about that here: th-cam.com/video/UkZ7ucpK9sc/w-d-xo.html I hope that helps and if possible, consider supporting my channel. Thanks! :) www.patreon.com/NateSchoemer

    How to train sleep and roll

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know if you can teach a dog to sleep on command, but you can teach them to lay down. Roll over is often accomplished by luring the dog into a down and then using the lure to get them to roll over. In the early stages, you can also help the dog roll over with your hand.

    My dog overshoots stuff a lot and "guesses" what I'm going to ask him because he gets too overstimulated and hyper fixated on the food. This has been a major issue for us, I know he is capable of learning so much but he just can never execute or preform reliably/correctly because of this. For example, if he sees me have a treat or even knows I'm about to ask him to do a series of tasks he will cycle through "sit" "down" "sit" "side" "through" "go to bed" etc, all very rapidly. I've tried keeping all food until the end of the session but then I notice he doesn't care to stay focused on me. It's a vicious cycle

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would try teaching leash pressure and using the continuation marker more, to slow the pup down a little. It may also help to lower the quality of the reward. For example; if you're using treats, try using his kibble. Then I would reinforce each command with the leash pressure, so he isn't guessing what's command is coming. Here's a video on teaching leash pressure: th-cam.com/video/hCb1Y86eYBQ/w-d-xo.html
