2:36 That's actually the Original song Lola by the Kinks played on an Acoustic Archtop Guitar. It wasn't the Yoda Parody by Weird Al which came out 15 years later.
LOL.........."and thats when the Les Paul comes screaming through the speaker". 1924 Gibson L-5 what a beautiful guitar with a great vid. Thanks Phil X.
The guitar makes Randy Rhoads sound like Eddie Lang haha. No guitar is meant specifically for any type of music. In any case the L5 was designed originally to be played in mandolin orchestras not jazz, and the crunch and power of archtops I think makes them excellent for the ole powerchords. Why the hell not? Stunning guitar in any case. It's hard to believe it's 90 years old. One day!
He didn't say it was a sin to play the guitar. He said it was a sin to play it like that... and I tend to agree. It isn't a flat-top. That's not how it was intended to be played (or rather, banged upon)
I have actually gotten to play one of these 20's L5's and they are INCREDIBLE! The mic tone on this vid does not do it near justice. You have got to be in the room hearing one of these guitars to really experience the tone of an original L5. I'm not sure if the one I got to play is a '24, but it looks spot on like this one.
This video made me cry tears of joy, also Phil you and I should jam and when I say that I mean you should teach me some more awesome stuff on the guitar.
i play a harmony that is very similar to this .its no gibson but it sounds so cool and it from the 60s. i feel lucky and it doesnt sound like any other acoustic.
Yeah that's a beautiful guitar quite amazing really, one of those "should-be-in-a-museum" grade guitars we find in vintage guitar shops every once in a while. I think its ancient wisdom brought out Phil X's primal nature. :D
you HAVE to go on stage because your show is one of the best guitar shows here on youtube , you talking intresting things and play really cool damm funny i sit here and laugh...
can someone please reply to me? what is the most affordable and available guitar that is closest to this one phil plays that i can buy now? i want it to look like this one and sound fairly like this too. this really is a beautiful instrumwnt
Wildwood Flower, anybody? Mother Maybelle would be impressed! Nice guitar and Phil explores new dimensions for this box. When the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band does its Will The Circle Be Unbroken Disc 4 Phil needs to be invited.
Honestly he did a good job in this review. He has played many vintage instruments and dont you think if he was playing to hard the owner or someone that was shooting the vid would have told him to stop.
The tone of this guitar is phenomenal, I'm already asking... Would you make a second video with this guitar? I'm not kidding either, The tone is so good. Anyway, I liked the Ozzy Osbourne song at 6:13. For some reason the part at 6:37 made me think of a railroad station. Thanks for the new video!
this is a question for Phil. I'm learning guitar and im getting pretty good ur my guitar inspiration love every band your in and love to hear you play if you had a holy grail of guitars what would it be.
That's a brunette Val Kilmer, simple as that. Still in Morrison mode (method actor obviously). Don't think he was overwhelmed, just not much action left in the 1924 frets! He optimises what music is all about, having fun and rocking out.
yarkehkeh A late 40’s, early 50’s L-50 will give you the size, sound and (sorta!) the appointments of a Loar L-5. Obviously the headstock will be different. But you might get better tuners! And they still can be found for under two grands... In Nashville, I stood in front of Maybel’s and suddenly broke into tears as I realized that very instrument would start a cultural revolution of enormous proportions and consequences for Country & Rock!
i love how much fun Phil has when he plays. thats what its all about
He is full of life...He plays the guitar with passion,he plays good and faster,he is a great guitar Player and he is fuckin crazy and funny!
That guitar never rocked so hard! It was having the time of it's life!
YES!!!!! Phil finally did Lola!!! The perfect rock song. Sounds great on a 1924 guitar, too.
Honestly, I like seeing more of these. It just shows how extremely versatile Phil is.
Phil and James Hetfield should have a Yea-Off.
Don't you mean YEAH!!!
Hell yeah
Great demo Phil X. I always look forward to your demos they brighten my day. You must know a million different songs. Well done, Thanks
Boston on a Loar L5- NICE! I have a late 20s L4. You really have to hear these guitars in person to appreciate their unique tone.

Singing Lola on a Lloyd Loar hahahahahaha! Very unexpected
That guitar was around when Robert Johnson was learning how to play or maybe cutting deals.

YES!

Probably my favourite guitar that you've ever played. Beautiful.
Every single time I hear Lola I automatically sing weird als yoda
It's cool we, didn't expect any jazz/blues or anything. We TOTALLY wanted to hear 80s music on a 1924 Gibson
phil x makes me come late at school every day! heaaaaaall yea!
"It just sounded wrong and I didn't know how to fix it on the spot, give me a BREAK!" 😂 That killed me!
Notice how his left leg keeps the beat even when he's just talking... Phil has music pumping through his veins :D
Phil X: Professional musician - comedian - all around cool guy.
You sure know how to have fun playing the guitar! Keep on rockin.
When I play Phil X at 2X speed, he's 3X as funny. Now that's a laugh savings my hernia appreciates!
You are amazing, phil. You just made my day. 1924??!!! dude that guitar is older than my granny!
Good taste in music for sure.
Phil always has so much fun.
100 years old guitar as of today. Pretty Wild!
He didn't say it was a sin to play the guitar. He said it was a sin to play it like that... and I tend to agree. It isn't a flat-top. That's not how it was intended to be played (or rather, banged upon)
gotta love phil. this is possibly my favorite one.
Some how I don't think this guitar was built to play a song about picking up a transvestite in a bar. But damn it sounded good! Phil X!
You are a great guy, great musician.

Gorgeous Guitar. It was a pleasure meeting the Fretted Americana family. If I ever win the lotto...
That guitar is 100 years old

Maybe the only time Phil was overwhelmed by the guitar. Didn't quite know what to do with the the history he was holding in his hands!
That is a very nice guitar indeed

what is the most affordable and available guitar that is closest to this one phil plays that i can buy now? i want it to look like this one and sound fairly like this too. this really is a beautiful instrumwnt
You can totally see the excitement on his face haha its so funny.
@sharkey1419 well the first song is "Lola" by the kinks and the 3rd one is "Beth" by kiss.
Wildwood Flower, anybody? Mother Maybelle would be impressed! Nice guitar and Phil explores new dimensions for this box. When the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band does its Will The Circle Be Unbroken Disc 4 Phil needs to be invited.

You're kidding right? More than a feeling by Boston!!
it could have been a marvelous time around some original guitar and clever practicing, but finally, it' s just a sparrow scarecrow !
amazing
this is a question for Phil. I'm learning guitar and im getting pretty good ur my guitar inspiration love every band your in and love to hear you play if you had a holy grail of guitars what would it be.
How is it possible that a guitar from the 20's be in such good shape?
Gotta love this dude! :D
thanks for the song anrew...
That's a brunette Val Kilmer, simple as that. Still in Morrison mode (method actor obviously).
Don't think he was overwhelmed, just not much action left in the 1924 frets! He optimises what music is all about, having fun and rocking out.
Shit Phil you just woke my kid with more than a feeling! He ain't going back asleep....feck!

Yes!!!!! that's what i'm trying to say but people don't like to read a comment and move on with their day with out trying to be right!
it's very much intentional, my guitar teacher thought me to tap my foot to the rhythm, it really helps when you have to sing and play at the same time
@guitarguy920 its 'i wish my Beer was As Cold As her heart' by the Drills
love the ozzy cover!
My Grandmother is from 20s and is in such good shape too......
and to think this is his job!!
