Bro, you are an inspiration! Doing on the curbside with traffic flowing by! Amazing. I'm going to replace my son's 2000 Golf MK4 2.0L clutch with stage 2 one.

Curbside Mechanic, dude, just like other reviewers I'm giving you two thumbs up not only for pulling this job on the curbside but also coming up with a very good video while you're at it AND trying to help responding every question. The latter part, very unusual. The info you dished out is very helpful for me as am gearing up to do the job this weekend for the first time in my MK4 Jetta TDI.
Great video! I'm looking for a VW so I've been watching random videos on TH-cam. I'm glad I found yours! If I get one, this is exactly how I will have to work on it.
That's Awesome Vawesome, I look forward to hearing about your future VW adventures. I have had so much fun in the many VW platforms that I have had a chance to drive. Keep me posted.
Mr Johnston I am glad you liked the video. This shows with the proper tools and a little know how, you can do it. Yes I'm on the side of the road. I am the Curbside Mechanic LOL. I will be doing the timing chain on my VR6 soon.
That's What"s Up @Freddie Villa. Just take your time when doing it, Take pictures of what you're working on so you can see how to put it back on. Comments like this make me glad I started making these Videos.
There are a few small differences but this video should walk you through that process th-cam.com/video/wTYuGG4ijgw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WyNH7bLl5omaw9X9 Thanks for watching.
I have a very important question. I’m stuck getting the actual trans down. The flange to the passenger side axel is getting caught on the back of the flywheel. How do I get that around the flywheel and past the subframe on the driver side? Do I just drop it straight down? Because, it gets caught on either of thise.
This particular vehicle was a manual. There are a few small differences between the two. I know the shift towers are different on removal and you have to align the torque converter on the installation for the automatic transmission.
Great video 👍 Saw quite a bit of fluid leak out when you popped off gearbox. Also a lot of oil/grime on the flywheel. Is it possible something was leaking into the bell housing, causing the clutch to slip? Curious how it drove after you cleaned and put same clutch back in?
Hey @scud, great question. You are very observant as well. The fluid dripping was coolant but there was a lot of grime that could have been cleaned up also. I never changed the rear main seal nor have I ever replaced the valve cover gasket on this vehicle. She is leaking from somewhere but it has never pooled up in my parking space. She drove like crap after I reinstalled the clutch. It took off fine but if I attempted to accelerate quickly, it wouldn't catch. I did remove the flywheel from a scrapped 1.8t block and replaced everything. I believe it was a Spec Stage 2 Clutch that I installed. It is very responsive and aggressive. There is no easing off the line when the light changes. It's more like gas it and Go Go Go. Thanks for your feedback.
@@curbsidemechanic3229 Well this will be the 2nd clutch in 4 months. First time it failed the same day we bought it.. I had the used car dealer replace it. I'm sure he just used the cheapest one he could find. She learned how to drive on a stick so, I'd like to think it's not her driving. To be honest this car has been nothing but probs.. @Curbside Mechanic it most definitely is I followed this video step by step and was able to remove the transmission. I didn't notice if you completely removed your transmission mount or not but I left mine on and I'm sure it would of been easier if I removed it. As well as the pasaanger side axle cup I left mine on.
Hey man long story short axle blots left the chat and cracked my entire case on my 02J 5 speed. I did the single mass flywheel conversion before on my engine. I see the spec stage 2 you used without the flywheel. Wondering if it would fix my single mass flywheel??
@Victor Salvatierra The bolt patterns for the transmissions are the same. The difference would be in removing the shift towers. When reinstalling the transmission on the automatic it's a little more difficult to realign it because of the Torque Converter. th-cam.com/video/wTYuGG4ijgw/w-d-xo.html
I have a mk4 golf and almost everything is the same but did you have to remove a little black clip that sits on top of the starter?? It’s giving be a terrible time
As a matter of fact, all you have to do is grab on the front end and pull forward while pressing down on the top. It should pop right open for you. I just replaced a friends starter earlier. I hope this helps you out @Michael Wilson
Can you really remove the axels without disconnecting them from the wheels? This would save so much time if you don’t have to remove it from the wheel side.
@Z M 😆 Yes you can disconnect the axels without removing the center bolt from the wheel side. You are actually supposed to replace the bolt on the wheel side if you remove it. Just remove the 6 bolts from the transmission side and tie the axels up with some bungee straps or rope.

If the Trans is stuck you may have to lower the block a bit to get some wiggle room. If you can find some thing to tie the axles up and out of the way for more clearance. I'm just going off of this small amount of info. Be Safe and I hope you complete this task successfully. Peace
@C. Baseball I can probably get this job done in about 6 - 8 hours if that's all I focus on. It has gotten easier the more I do it. If it's your first time doing this you should be able to bang it out during a weekend.
