I've heard this song on the radio one time and really fell in love with it, its basically talking about consumerism. At least in my opinion. But I understand why she is a little creepy when singing, its because she is inside of her music, if you understand what I'm talking about. She's really into it and doing what she really loves and probably doesn't know that she is making weird zombie like movements, she's authentic.

Exactly. Watch some old Alanis Morissette, she used to make some pretty stange movements when she sang. Same thing, though, she was just totally lost in what she was doing. Personally, I can really appreciate that. She cares more about how she sounds than how she looks.

From what ive always understood playing in a band, is vocalists hands express and help deliver much like waving ur arms around while retelling a good story. It helps the singer time inhales during beats as well from what it looks like. Just my 10cents
you may say that she is weird , awkward or stoned, but the amazing thing about this singer is that she feels the music right in her heart. She doesn't want to do a choreography or follow someone's instructions.She is just here to sing good music and be weird as fuck which i bet she is in the real life. I only first heard Royals on the radio about 2 weeks ago because I don't ever listen to radio lol. But I heard it again the other day so I asked a friend what it was again. Came across this after listening to the original song once and I've watched this 5 times in a row now! I love watching this girl sing. When I'm really enjoying singing I can't do it with my eyes open either haha.

And i love how you actually say lorde uses autotune for her album yet she is real. Get this princess, she isan act that is put on to convince people like you thatif you like her music you will be unique and a non conformist. Her movements and odd stylizations are an act. I sang in choir for 8 years and can out sing lorde in her own song any day. She is ruining her somewhat acceptable live voice by moving like that and not moving her mouth ( or more rather moving it like she just left the dentist.) Lorde is the epitomy of conformity. She hasa catchy song ( just like many other talented artists) but is using "alternative" to draw in drones like you. Lorde has some great songs with great vocals. That is after autotune gets ahold of them.

I don't get why people keep criticizing her. Yes, she uses "studio work" but just like EVERY singer in the current market. However, she is still different than all the other. She has a different approach concerning music and style, that's all. In addition, she is not as concerned as the others about having to look gorgeous (makeup, etc.) and I think that's awesome.

She is a beautiful young lady. I am quite sure her family loves her and I am not surprised that she is a sensation in her own country. I know how it feels to enjoy someone's music. So for her fans, I am truly happy for you! You get her. You have connected to her message. Unlike some of us, what she is saying touches you. I get it... However, in a world with more than 6 billion people, it is difficult to win everyone over; and as a practitioner of music myself it is my sincere hope that she continues to practice and gain more control over her voice and her physical placement. Right now, she is not quite in the driver's seat with regards to her voice and her body, which does not surprise me - especially given her age. The good news for her fans is that given the fact she has some talent she will make it, because nowadays many people with no talent at all make it...

*sigh* The movements are not pointless. Every singer or general musician has a habit formed in order to keep in time/feel their music, even if only for specific songs. People tap their toes, nod their heads, snap their fingers, wheich the average person would probably consider "keeping it simple," but other musicians "go crazy"; some, like Gaga, have 'convulsions' during piano music, people ball their hands into fists, throw their heads back, etc.. Kelly Rowland used to do a lot with her hands especially back in Destiny's Child days, and I didn't see many people saying she was on crack for doing so. From what I've seen in many of her performances, Lorde just has a habit of clawing her hands and popping her arms to keep the beat and feel her own song.
You should also remember that she isn't an American girl! What did you expect, for her to stand there, feet together, hands folded, staring straight ahead, making not one facial expression, just so she can look to us judgemental people that she's not "misusing drugs"? Someone could come from like, Botswana, and think that we're crazy witch doctors for tapping our toes.
Her singing is perfectly fine; it wasn't meant to sound like the typical American pop song, which is why it's also on our Alternative charts, but that really doesn't mean you just have to throw out insults because of it.
I agree with what you're saying but we don't really have different singing mannerisms in New Zealand. We're a first world English-speaking country. Lorde's music sounds like it does because she's Lorde, not because she's foreign.
myeyesfilledwithsky being first-world or english-speaking has nothing to do with the artistic culture of a society's music (or film etc.). American and British pop songs have their own subtle differences and nuances too. It's not a dig at NZ, it's just a comment that things from different places can be different.

I was only saying "...she isn't an American girl!" because it's easier for a lot of mainstream American music listeners to associate things with being foreign, instead of being natural.
