I thought "likeness" was the amount of letters that are the same in both words. But not in order. It seemed to work out for a while but something kept confusing me. Thank you for this video it's going to help a lot! Keep up the great work!
+TheSleepingCub13 I thought so too, but the first time it didn't match I was like, wait so what else is it, and I figured it had to be in order as well.
+TheSleepingCub13 I thought the same thing too for a long time (since Fallout 3). I think in Fallout 3 that's how hacking worked, eliminating words based on how many letters are in the correct password, this might be a better system since now you know how many letters are in the correct position.
+TheSleepingCub13 Me too! I always thought it was the amount of letters that were in the correct words too, and it did work apart from sometimes! This video is brilliant!
One thing you forgot to mention is that you can exit out of the terminal if you are running out of tries and when you go back to the the terminal, your tries are reset.
+Doyledeth But in this game losing all ur tries won't matter cause ur only locked out of the terminal for like 5 seconds then u can go back in. Fallout 3 and New Vegas, if u were locked out, ur locked out for good unless u had a perk or a save point.
Boomer130 How doesn't saving time matter? You're not really providing a solid argument here.... Why bother waiting when you can literally exit, go back in 1 second.
+Doyledeth He is make a more solid argument then backing out and going back in. When you do that, all of your tries might reset but then the terminal then resets all of the words. You now might end up with more words (or less) and the difficultly can also change slightly, moving from 4-5 character words to 6-7 even on Novice difficultly. It is faster to use the likeness method that was not even fully described in this "guide" then it is to guess until your tries are out or by backing out.
Also, one of those groups in brackets will reset your remaining tries to four. If you save before you start you can always go back and try again if you fail first time. Every time I see a console I save.
Quick note for everyone. Here in Fallout 4, they've changed the hacking so if you fail, you're only locked out for a short time period, not permanently locked out anymore, just locked out for about 10-15 seconds.
@@clevername8832 there was a trick that if you didn't use your last hack you could back out and redo it...it changes the password but it would guarantee you wouldn't get locked out.
I legit have been doing nothing but randomly guessing this whole time. 10 hours into Fallout 4, and growing, and never figured out hacking. Thank you so much lol.
if you find stuff between brackets like {::/][]} you can remove a dud or get an extra try. least thats what i did in fallout 3. terminal hacking was always my fave :3
This video really helped me, i thought the likeness meant how many correct letters was in the word you just chose. Ill be going with the hacking perks further in my adventure! Thanks
I had totally forgotten about the bracket trick! I used that all the time in Fo3. You just made hacking sooo much easier and more fun for me. Many thanks! Kind of goes to show that even if you consider yourself an experienced Fallouteer, it's always good to have a quick review of the basics once in a while.
I just started fallout 4 and i had somewhat of a same method to that. i choose words that don't match up with eachother at all. For Example Fight(Likeness=0)....... Death(Likeness=0)..... Doors(Likeness=1)...... Porno( *Cha~Ching!* )
thanks for this i honestly did not know about the dud remove option, now im wondering if in the 300 hours + i played in Fallout New Vegas if it was there too.... If it is i will actually scream out FFS for the amount of times ive had to exit the terminal because ive 1 chance left just to start all over lol
Ada can also hack terminals. Thank you for sharing this vid with us! I have never seen any of this and terminal hacking has always felt more like just a lucky guess than any technique. Truly appreciated.
The best way is to pick the first 3 then go find (),,{},[] so u can reset your tries. you still have 3 down plus, a bunch of dubs removed. I did that in one sentence and this video is 10 mins. YOUR WELCOME
I always look over the words and try to spot similarities, like beginning or ending with the same letter(s). Sometimes a list will have several words ending with -ing or -es, etc, so if I choose one of those, it will immediately cut down the number of choices.
Jag didn't read the hacking tutorial very clearly apparently, so up until now, I had just need blindly guessing. That did however work out every single time so far, but this will be really useful on more difficult terminals. Thank you for the tutorial, I think you did a good job of explaining this.
+JV2017gameplay Are they still using Karma in Hacking and Lock Picking, cause it was mentioned that you may decide to be enemies with other factions, and was wondering if I take anything from them, will it depend if I'm allied or apposed to them?
+JV2017gameplay thanks, I was conflicted, cause the factions here like the BOS, Institute and Railroad don't seem to see eye to eye and I'm one of those players who doesn't like to get caught between factions, but honestly I don't mind wiping out the Institute hehe. And I also left one question on the Vid about the Overseers Guardian, thanks.
Thats an easy, concise, and complete description especially with that dud/reset protip. For future referance, those greater/less than symbols are called left and right chevrons. Years of computer programming taught me what lots of grammatical markers are called. [] are Brackets () are Parenthesis/Curved Brackets {} are Braces/Curly Brackets and are Chevrons/Angle Brackets.
There is a slightly better way for selecting a starting word, but it is only really necessary on some of the Expert terminals if you aren't using the duds/resets. You figure out which word gives you the most information about the other codes. Your first one, this would be HISSING since 5->FISHING, 2->VASSALS, 1->LIBRARY, and 0->LARGEST or PARENTS; the max amount of tries would be three with the average being two (LARGEST is the next best at max of three and average of 2.167). The second one you had would have the optimal word of RELATED since 3->GREETED, 2->CLEAVER, 1->TALKING, and 0->NUCLEAR or TAKINGS, having the same statistics as the first one you had. Like I said, it doesn't become necessary often, but it is slightly better.
There is another small hint: All the passwords are 'related' to the enviroment they are set in. What I mean is eg: at campsites the pw is liekly to be related to camping, like "campfire" or "reception" or "campsite". Hope this helps as well. To me personally the "remove dud" was the best tip i have ever seen in this topic. Basically you can easily hack EVERY terminal in the first attempt. HUGE thumbs up for this tip mate! Thank you very much!
Ron Jeremy click three words and if none are right then back out and go back in so you don't have to wait for a reset then just keep guessing but don't guess the 4th time or else you'll have to wait 10-15 secs
Before I watched this video, I was HORRIBLE at hacking. But now I'm way better, thanks for making this video!!! It really helped me and I really appreciate that you decide to share these cool tips and tricks and not keep them to yourself!
Great video, I knew about the likeness, but not the dud removal. This is the 2nd or third video of yours that i've watched and you have earned another subscriber.
Prior to watching this I didn't know anything about removing duds from the terminal which drastically increases your chances of selecting the correct password. Thank you very much for this awesome video! =D
You sir just earned a sub and a like. I came here wanting to learn how to do this properly because the previous Fallout games weren't clear on their tutorials, I not only got a correction, but also a means of reversing my screw ups. G. G.
I usually pick based on # likeness and usually do fine. But only recently learned about the removal of dud words and resetting attempts which is nice to have in a pinch.
Lucas Bowen For an even easier way just pick the first "three" words and then go thru the list looking for duds. Usually, your tries will also get reset. That will almost always bring the word list down to an amount that you will have more tries than words.
this was great. everyone has always told me that the likeness just involves number of correct letters, not their place in the word too. well explained friend :)
Robot sidekicks can also be customized to have a hacking module if you don't want to deal with hacking or have Nick Valentine as your sidekick. I think hacking is kinda fun, but it can get tedious and frustrating if you just want to get a mission done.
Though I love games, I struggle to get into them, I tend to take ages to understand them! so to have videos like this is great! It doesn't assume that everyone knows it all from the start! thanks
Thanks for explaining Duds & Resets! I've played through FO3 & FO:NV without picking up on what they did & the way you explained (& showed) how they worked really helped!
i had troubles with hacking when i started out, i wish this video was released within the first week. i ended up figuring out how to hack terminals on my own after a while. and figured out the "dud removed" and the "tries reset" over time. this video is very informative, and would help out those with the troubles of hacking terminals. Note- sometimes (because it is completely random) there will be NO dud removes and resets, as i have had experience with that happening on a Master Terminal. (it sucked)
I find that hacking in fallout 4 to be sometimes difficult, or sometimes in the middle. Before watching this video I would just choose random passwords and find myself constantly locked out on each terminal I attempted to hack which can be very annoying. Now that I know about how to get rid of duds you have helped me immensely when I feel like going through the fallout 4 campaign and reliving each and every moment of the game. I thank you my friend you have no idea how much this helps both me, and others like me who tend to be more combat based.
Thanks a lot for making this video ....I just bought fallout 4 yesterday and I'm brand new to the fallout world. I'll be subscribing and probably using your videos for help in the future! Thanks again!
My technique is to look for the patterns in letters and their placement between all the words. For example a few passwords might begin with the letter L or a few passwords might have the letter T as the 4th letter in them. Noticing such patterns in all the words helps you zone in on the correct pass phrase. With the way hacking works in this game there is always multiple passwords with letters in the same place as the correct password. In your example the patterns I saw were the words Largest and Parents both having the letters A and R as their second and third letter respectively, that is one pattern. The second is Vassals and Hissing both having the letter S as both their 3rd and 4th letter in them. So I first would have selected Vassals or Hissing first due to there being a bigger stronger pattern between them. So if I chose Vassals first it would tell me that two letters were in their correct placement, obviously hinting to hissing being the correct password. Using this technique in spotting patterns in all the passwords I can get through even master terminals with ease. There also has actually been times where I got the right password on the first guess by reading the patterns. I been doing this since Fallout 3, so I had a lot of practice so to speak.
Agreed, one of my techniques is that if I get a Likeness=0 guess, the next pick should be a password with none of the same letters/position as the previous guess. I totally forgot about the duds and resets from the previous FO installments! I'm glad I saw this video to refresh my memory.
omg I didn't think this would help me at all, but I wasn't aware that the likeness goes by the first to last order lol. thank for this video man it helped
First... before you start to guess.. go through each line slowly and you would find some symbols in brackets would light up more then one symbol (like a complete word lights up), then click on it and it would state: "Dud Removed" and it removes one of the incorrect words. There are most of always more then one "group" of removable symbols also you would get a :"Attempts reset" sometimes as well. That is the best way of eliminating the wrong words before you take a wild guess... hope that helps
I've been hacking in the series quite easily with perks and dud removal and tries reset, however your explanation of how "likeness" works has made it far easier. thanks
I came across your content an hour ago and I really like your content. Nice job, very professional. Also, nice music choice. I've never heard it before and to be frank, I like it.
I just started playing Fallout 4, I have never played another Fallout before so hacking truly was reading hieroglyphics. This has change my entire hacking experience.
My life was a lie until this video. My God that explain everything. I was doing it wrong till Fallout 3. I wasn't using terminals because I can't hack them in my stupid way, via blind shots. Thank you ! :)
I have played all fallouts from the beginning and never knew about the duds. Very informative and will helps me reduce the amount of going out then retrying.
Thank you for making this video I had over 2,000 hours of Fallout and still couldn't figure out how the hell to use terminals I've now successfully hacked 88 terminals in a row Many thanks good sir
OMG! I thought I was just not smart or something. Thank you so much man. I am so thankful for your detailed video and I can enjoy and now actually understand how the whole hacking mechanic works. I thought I just was choosing randomly and it made no sense before, but you explained it so well. I'm able to legit get through terminals a lot better now. Thank you so very much! Your a good and detailed explainer. Great video and I thought it was funny that your in the same place I'm at right now in game.
I have just been getting lucky any time I've unlocked a terminal b/c I've been doing this wrong the entire time. No wonder I couldn't get anything beyond a novice terminal to unlock. THANK YOU.
One thing I just found out is that you don't have to wait for the animation of the terminal printing out the entire screen one character at a time. Just press the USE button (X on PS/4) and the whole hack screen shows up at once. I used to sit and wait for it to be drawn.
Thanks, I'm new to Fallout 4 and this was very useful. I thought 'likeness' just meant that the character(s) in a word matched the characters in the password, wasn't aware that it was actually the position of the characters. I also didn't know about the 'dud' mechanic.
I've just brought fallout 4 I've never played any of the other games. I could never do the hacking it always failed, this video helped so much ! Thankyou
Wow man i didn't figure the way to properly hack terminals, even with the years i passed playing FO4 i wasn't able to correctly hack 'em. Thanks a lot !!!
Make your first word guess count. Look at the most commonly occurring prefixes and suffixes in the available words and choose a word that shares that word segment. For example, if a lot of the words end in the letters ING and you choose one of them and the likeness is not 3 or more then you just eliminated all of those words ending with ING and cleared out the biggest group of words possible. It's a huge advantage most of the time

Using this technique in spotting patterns in all the passwords I can get through even master terminals with ease. There also has actually been times where I got the right password on the first guess by reading the patterns.
I been doing this since Fallout 3, so I had a lot of practice so to speak.
You're a god! Everyone says "likeness means you have letters in the password" first time someone mentioned it being placeholders.
Agreed, one of my techniques is that if I get a Likeness=0 guess, the next pick should be a password with none of the same letters/position as the previous guess. I totally forgot about the duds and resets from the previous FO installments! I'm glad I saw this video to refresh my memory.
This was super helpful. Thank you. Better than fumbling around and guessing, using up your tries, waiting ten seconds, then trying again. Thank you :)
Had no idea of the "dud" removal. GREAT tip once again, thanks JV!
2020 and I'm just starting this game. Very helpful stuff. Especially the mention of Nick Valentine doing the hacking for you. Thanks.
This was really helpful. I already knew about the word likeness but being able to get rid of the duds is huge. Thanks for the tip.
omg I didn't think this would help me at all, but I wasn't aware that the likeness goes by the first to last order lol. thank for this video man it helped
Hacking was a pain in the tail until I found this video. Now, its so easy. Thank you for making this.
First... before you start to guess.. go through each line slowly and you would find some symbols in brackets would light up more then one symbol (like a complete word lights up), then click on it and it would state: "Dud Removed" and it removes one of the incorrect words. There are most of always more then one "group" of removable symbols also you would get a :"Attempts reset" sometimes as well. That is the best way of eliminating the wrong words before you take a wild guess... hope that helps
I did not know this and I think this is honestly so helpfully, it will make everything easier, thanks so much man, awesome video
Hi Frank
I just started playing Fallout 4, I have never played another Fallout before so hacking truly was reading hieroglyphics. This has change my entire hacking experience.
My life was a lie until this video. My God that explain everything. I was doing it wrong till Fallout 3. I wasn't using terminals because I can't hack them in my stupid way, via blind shots. Thank you ! :)
This is the first Fallout game I've really gotten into and I didn't fully understand the hacking. So thanks for the video it helped a lot!!! :)
Thanks a ton for this! I didn't know if it was "alike characters" or "characters in the same position". But now I do.
I have played all fallouts from the beginning and never knew about the duds. Very informative and will helps me reduce the amount of going out then retrying.
Thank you for making this video I had over 2,000 hours of Fallout and still couldn't figure out how the hell to use terminals I've now successfully hacked 88 terminals in a row
Many thanks good sir
I hack alot since Fallout 3, and I never knew about the dud removal technique. cool video !
Excellent explanation! Thanks so much for making this! You have made my gaming experience much less stressful now :D
I kinda knew all of this but it was nice to have a refresher for sure.
Good vid.
After not having much luck hacking in FO3, I shall deffo be trying this on FO4. Cheers!
This really helped, I knew roughly how to hack but now I can make I easier for myself. Keep up the work.
So glad I watched this! Your videos are the best i have seen on Fallout 4. have subbed! merry Christmas.
I have hundreds of hours in multiple fallout games, and i never new about duds. Wow. Thanks man.
Thanks man.. i have had so much trouble when hacking the terminals.. this guide will absolutly help! You da man!
Thanks, that helped tremendously. The parentheses and brackets explanation helps, too.
It's a huge advantage most of the time
Thanks for this videos!! I didn't understand hacking terminals, mainly just going by dumb luck. Very Informative!
Thanks for the guide. Really helped me out. These videos are why I'm subbed to you
