The best line for me, "You have to plan ahead, and you have to know what you're doing, -pause- takes a breath, it's what we used to call driving". Salute to all the drivers out there!!!
As an owner of a XJR6 (albeit an automatic) myself I just want to say you did a great job understanding and explaining what makes these cars so special. They have a unique charm all of their own. Basically when you drive one, you either get it or you don't. This converted car is a real credit to it's owner, especially having a usable clutch. Many old X300s/XJ40/XJS with this gearbox suffer from catastrophically heavy clutches for one reason or another, mainly due to age. I drove a factory manual XJR6 last year and the clutch was so heavy it hurt to use it! Also the exhaust on this car is perfect. It has just the right amount of 1960s Mk. 2 Jag bank robbery getaway car to it without being too loud.
A perhaps slightly interesting addendum to my earlier post. I now own another converted manual XJR6 (also I got a test drive of the car in this video just after it was released). I'm absolutely delighted to have the manual over the auto, it is so much more engaging to drive. It certainly takes some time to build a a rapport with the car, but every time you drive it it feels special.
@@ferociousmullet9287 Was going to say I've had 4 XJs. Love them to bits. Will not bother with it again. Had a glorious XJR (8) that cost as much to run over two years as it cost to buy.
Well Jay, you’ve inspired me. Five years ago I sold mine, one of very few in the US with a manual, and as of a couple of weeks ago it’s back in my possession. Time to live the manual XJR6 life again.
It's a very special feeling when driving a Jag. I have an X300 XJ6 and a BMW E61 and both make me feel good when driving but the Jag is the best feeling. Perhaps it's the low wide planted feel of the car when cornering or the fact that it accelerates well but the faster you go the harder it accelerates. Having said that it still feels great when stuck behind slow moving traffic. Then I simply enjoy the comfort.
The main limitation with these XJRs is the brakes and the Supercharger. Getting an uprated one, a twin corkscrew, will increase the top end whilst leaving the torque at the low end in good stead.
As a Jaguar lover, this one is the holy grail: the ultimate incarnation of the Jaguar straight six in the most timeless of all bodies. Years ago our garage had a mint one for sale for 10.000€. If only we had got it...

Nice to see the jaguar content. Hopefully you get given to drive the 2010 XJ supersport or a Jaguar XE SV Project 8. Great review of the luxurious XJR manual rare breed and great video and keep up the great work

Well Jay, I wouldn't call the GM 4L80E trans junk. Yes, it is not as fun as a manual trans. However, the 4L80E is a robust beast, very tough. I love me manual trans, which is why my sports car has one. And my XJR 100 has an auto. Wouldn't have it any other way.
I would never own an auto in any car ever………except a 90s jag. I hope to own a 308 xjr one day, but car prices here in Aus are twice as expensive as Britain, not going to stop me though.

Love that car. I have a 99 XJR here in the states and I would put a 5 or 6 speed manual in it if I knew all the correct parts to get. That would make it so much more fun to drive.
I really want one, That manual really wakes it up and we have a ton of these old jags in Australia with low KMs in good condition and relatively cheap but none with a manual I don't think a single one made it to Australia
I have always loved the shape of the x300 beautiful design aged very well .Cool car in a manual but I have to say I always liked the slightly lazy big auto box in the jag, great video keep them coming
The GM autobox used in the XJR is absolutely fine - much smoother shifting and more responsive than the ZF boxes used in the non-supercharged cars. Is this geezer thinking of Borg Warners ? I bought my XJR with the intention of converting it to manual, but kept putting it off because the auto worked so well. (Finally did it when the shifts became very rough. After removing it, I had it stripped, and the box itself was fine - it was down to a wiring problem. Getting clutches for the manual X300 dual mass flywheel now seems to be a problem btw - I am therefore now making conventional solid flywheels that take a single-plate clutch big enough to handle the XJR's torque, and save a lot of weight compared to the DMF.)
I actually find the opposite to be true regarding the autos, I've driven loads of auto XJR6s and the GM gearbox always annoys me with how lazy it is when you're trying to press on, whereas the ZF 4 speed in the NA cars are fine. You are right on the clutches, after this video was made I tried to get a new clutch and couldn't find one, so it's been converted to single mass flywheel, I got one from an XJS 3.6 and had it lightened and rebalanced, and then fitted it with a helix competition paddle clutch kit. Its the same setup as used in the 700nm torque XJR6 race car that swallows racing use so is more than fine in my car which produces 539nm. I think it drives better too as a single mass.
@@leeevernden Thinking about it, all the ZF box cars I drove were 3.2s, so would have had the HP22. These all had a slight "thump" on every gear-change which made me wince a bit, and lacked a Sport mode, whereas the XJR GM box was very smooth, and seemed acceptably brisk in Sport mode. Not driven a 4-litre NA with the HP24 with electronic controls - presumably better all round than the hydraulic-only HP22? Can we exchange contact info on this site? Love the manual XJ ... Tiff once drove a XKR-R special done by factory (in-house) engineers just to see what they could do - sadly never available to the public as far as I'm aware.
I always wondered what the manual version was like(on the first edition, the six cylinder engine one). I wish they had it as an option on V8 one. It’s a great car.
At one of my old jobs we had a guy come in with one of these with a factory manual gearbox, in black. It was such a mean looking car, but it had advanced bulkhead rot that meant the shell wasn't savable. Such a shame, hopefully the parts live on in another car.
"have to plan ahead", back in around 1990 I drove a BMW 750iL, ghastly, it's was fine in a straight line but the "lump up front" would charge off across a field as you and the rear three quarters leant into a curve, unless you braked really hard you had to dial back the speed way too early. I've been considering an X300, this film was very helpful.
If you enjoyed that, i think you should drive my 1997 Saab 9000 Aero 2.3T manual. The car that was advertised as being quicker than a Diablo (midrange). Mine will actually keep with an Audi R8 V10 to 100. Its very amusing shall we say. 70 to 100 is just 3.5 seconds in 3rd. Happy to bring it to you. Mine was in a private collection for 14yrs, so its in remarkable condition.
It's funny you should mention that, at one point I owned both that era Saab 9000 Aero (mine was a 1995 and mildly tuned) as well as a 1995 manual XJR. Both very different kinds of fun; the Jag had an immensely flat torque curve from low revs all the way through 4k RPM, in stark contrast to the Saab's need to get above 2500 RPM before the beast showed its true colors. The Saab's rally car noises were definitely hilarious fun, especially with my open intake and turbo-back exhaust, and quite the change from that straight six and supercharger harmony one got from the Jag.
@@ofmanynicknames I love it. Ive had 3 9000 Aero's now, and out of all the cars ive had its the best all rounder. Im getting 40.5mpg at the moment on runs into London and back. And yet it will leave an A45 for dead on the dash to 100. Also THE best seats of any car in the world, ever. The only Seat also that Saab contracted out and didnt make inhouse. So they are made by Recaro.
@@TheSaabClinicUK Speaking of it being an incredible all-rounder car, what's the biggest thing you've crammed into the hatch with the seats folded down? I moved house with mine and transported everything I owned in or on it; I needed the roof rack for my mattress, but everything else fit, including a 6-foot tall book case.
@@ofmanynicknames Well not in a 9000CS. But in an early flat front 9000 i got a full double divan bed in the rear with mattress and closed the hatch !. Dont think you could manage that in a CS given the rear speaker pods are just a bit bigger.
I think a testament to how much this car has subtly influenced the car industry even today, is how similar the current Mercedes W213 E-Class and the Porsche 971 Panamera's dashboard and ski slopes are so similar. The Panamera even keeps the low dash height.

I love the one windshield wiper
Smart buy.
Great job on this video, I have 2 Jags, both XjR's 1998-2000
Awesome car, awesome shirt.
I had all the brake pads and discs changed in my X300 and it feels very safe when slowing from 120mph. I can't imagine how brakes could be any better.
Very good narrative jay.
Good vid with an outrageous shirt, nice work fella
I think a testament to how much this car has subtly influenced the car industry even today, is how similar the current Mercedes W213 E-Class and the Porsche 971 Panamera's dashboard and ski slopes are so similar. The Panamera even keeps the low dash height.
Was looking at the big cat then I got distracted by your big cat shirt 😂👍
It’s perfect…
Fantastic lovely carv
A manual Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaag! 😍👌👌👌
Very nice jaaaag :)
I wanted an 80's xj6 series 3 in racing green ever since I seen the tv show The Equalizer back in the 80's
