@@idriveaclassic : Hi Stephanie how are you today? Gr8 Jag, I MUST admit I've been a Jaguar fan since childhood. The '71-74 Jaguar E type V12 is my all time favourite. In signal red of coarse. Have ever driven this model? I do like other British cars as well such as the Aston Martin Volante V8,Triumph TR8,MG-B GT,Rover 3500(SD1) and RR Silver Cloud 3. Stay safe and have a gr8 God blessed day.

Yes a real Jag is not like today. It is like they were around 1960s up to 1974 or so. Unique and full of class except that BL were sending cars out to customers which were shoddily built sometimes with engines that failed quite quickly because they weren't built properly. Being high tech and modern is great but the tradition of Jaguar is what needs to be celebrated.

Hello from Dallas, Steph! I've been a fan of your channel since early on and really appreciate your informative and entertaining posts about cars we, for the most part, never see here in the colonies. Your endearing personal style and obvious affection for the classics you review have made me into a true fan, and getting the owners to share their stories is a huge bonus. You have great friends, which is no surprise.
I have enjoyed an 01 Vanden Plas and an 03 XK8 convertible for ten and five years respectively, and you are so right in advising people to buy the best example they can afford. Once sorted, these cars are both reliable and durable in addition to being head turners even twenty years on, even in a famously status-conscious city like mine. And paid for, thank you very much.
You do a great job. Keep that camera rolling!

My mate's dad bought a turquoise XJR when they came out in 1996. We were in our 20's and used to borrow it on a regular basis. Not sure whether people assumed we'd stolen it or whether it was because it was The Jag to have at the time, but it got a lot of attention. It was a bloody amazing car though.

I had a V8 XJR, gorgeous looking and driving car. Mine was on its original engine, so occasionally suffered from the starting issue caused by the porous nikosil liners.
A 6 cylinder XJR is on my list of cars still wanted.
Gorgeous, quick and comfy for not huge money. What's not to like?

I learned to drive a manual transmission on a Jaguar XK120 that an uncle bought new when he was stationed in Britian and had shipped back to the US. Right hand drive, so I had a lot of unlearning to do later. That XK was the beginning of my love affair with Jaguars. I am 72 now and that has not changed. I envy you being able to drive the ultimate Jag!

Yes I do miss my supercharged Jaguar XJR. It was a P reg from 1997, and the colour was called Carnival Red. It drank petrol as if it had a towering thirst! But it drove like a big sportscar. and I certainly liked driving it at speed. But it was such a long car, that it was difficult to park in car parks. It really is more like parking a van!

A nice video on one of the most underrated and special Jags ever. The XJR6 specifically is just in incredibly special and has so much charm. Working on them is not bad at all for an enthusiast. The trick is to buy one that has been maintained throughout it’s life. The supercharged AJ16S engine is intoxicating and as soon as you drive one you will not quite settle with the rest of the X300 range ever again. Logically a 3.2 sport is 90% of the Jag you would ever need, but just listen to the Eton blower and you won’t care. That is what happened to me and obviously the same happened to the owner of this one. Interesting to note the car in this video has some lovely looking exhaust headers. The problem is that only 6500 XJR6s were ever built so they are already rare. 102 of them had a manual transmission and having driven one I can say it is a completely different car. You really have to drive it and the power is more usable. Utterly brilliant, they are the holy grail!

Great video. I've got a 2002 XJ 3.2 v8, same shape as this before they changed shape. Totally agree with you on the finance view. Why pay 200, 300, 400 a month when you can buy one of these for under 2k and own it outright. Even though they're not great on fuel you'll save money against a finance car plus it's a special driving experience that turns heads.

I had a 1996 XJR6, pokey, but a lot less bite than my 1998 XJR V8. The latter car unfortunately had a pile of problems! Have had my 2002 XJ8 Sovereign 4 ltre LWB since 2012 and this has been great and with performance on a par with the 1996 XJR. Historically have had 2 Series 3 XJ12, both very smooth but money pits. You must regularly run Jags, service every 6 months irrespective of milage and use a Jag specialist.

Another great review Steph, how i miss mine.....1995 british Racing green with a black interior. Apparently it was owned by the boss of Tarmac and was specced up, it even had heated rear seats! My god it was fast, and it loved its petrol, but it was a money pit! I only managed 23mpg on the motorway at a constant 50mph. And yes it would do 155mph.
I took my wife to our wedding in it and brought my Son home from the hospital when he was born. I will admit i shed a tear when i sold it to emigrate. Id have another in a heart beat.
Good luck to the owner, i hope he cherishes her.

XJR was available on the XJ40 model. It was a model created by TWR, that had done the XJ220 with Jaguar.
It wasn't supercharged, just had higher-lift cams for extra power but had (rather garish) bodykit and was first launched with the 3.6 and then the 4.0.

Still a real Jaguar because they were always known for their powerful 6 cylinder engines. Sadly this one is a bit dark inside like BMWs but it is still a nicer place to be than a German luxury car. From here Jaguars became really good quality cars. However, the XJ40 started the come back after BL did little for the XJ6's reputation. The XJ40 sowed the seed for this great XJR. Thank you so much Steph and Richard. A man of taste.

This model and the series 3 are the two best looking XJs in my opinion. I was lucky enough to have a 2000 MY V8 Sovereign which was only two years old when I bought it and would still have it now if some cockwomble in a 35cwt van hadn't driven Ito the side of it. I certainly prefer it to drive to the X350 I replaced it with that said I do enjoy the improved technology in the newer car specifically the voice control, the satnav and touch screen.

I`m sure the engine was hot, but regardless of make please let the oil circulate for 10 seconds or so before revving it, to allow oil to be pumped to the top of the engine, which will be almost dry if the engine has been stopped for more than a few seconds! The oil will have drained down from the top of the engine, where the very important camshaft and valves are!
You`re quite right about the miss-matched wood on the wheel though, it didn't leave the factory like that.

Nice to see you in a classic Jaguar. I have a 2003 S-type 3.0 (yes, I know, from the Ford era, although the concept/design was done prior to Ford) which attracts many nice comments in a world of German and Asian look-alike cars (the Inspector Morse/Sweeney vibe on a budget). If you ever make it to the States, feel free to take my Jag for a spin...! As mentioned earlier, the audio on this episode seemed to pick up more road/wind noise than your commentary, so some sort of clip on external mic would be an improvement...

Hey if this was yours I’d appreciate putting you in touch with current owner! My email is Idriveaclassic(@)gmail(dot)com
Nothing bad. Richard adores this car like it’s his first born. He’d love to chat to old owners!

The different color on the wood on the steering wheel would indicate that steering wheel was replaced with one that was in better condition. Probably because a prior owner wore rings and damaged it.

Steph, you should have drove the Buttertubs pass. OK you are probably not skilled enough to give the big cat a real good work out, but a spirited drive there you would find just how easy it is to cover the ground.
Remember the Jaguar slogan "grace, pace & space" A supercharged Jag is the robbers ideal.

      1. I’m miles from there in this video
      2. I’m a skilled driver...not sure why you’d suggest otherwise!

@@idriveaclassic I'm no suggesting you are not, just the potential of this car is so high. To max it out on a moorland road takes exceptional skill. I'd happily ride beside you Steph. Keep the vids coming, I like them.

Mmmmmm from a time when Jags were proper Jags ! That car just screams Jaaaaaaggggggg 🤣 it's just a different class - I keep putting the video back to hear that beautiful noise !! Did someone mention the MG ZR perhaps 😉

A bit of a golden era for Jag with Ford running the show. Pity they sold them.

So true. After being under-capitalized and basically "bled" by BL, Ford was a godsend for Jaguar. Pity that Ford had over-expanded its international operations and had to liquidate its Premium division.

If you love that Jaguar you'd really like a mid 2000s XKR coupe. 0 to 60 in 5.3 last of the real Jaguars.

You're old enough to remember the Spice Girls and the Macarena? Thanks, now I'll have that song in my head the rest of the night. Lol. Really really brilliant car. I love it. My whole life (being the male version of Hyacinth Bucket) I fancied myself as more of an executive type, so I always pictured myself in one of these. How did I do? Well, I can only say that I made it as far as a brand new 2017 Honda CR-V. So much for my executive motoring aspirations.

nice video - such a beautiful car - just awesome - one of Britains best - does not get better - I had 3 jags - would love to get one again. - would get the V8 - all my jags where super reliable and very low maintenance - I have had around 50 cars and must say my jags where one of the most reliable - the later style was also great
