    At 38 years old, I just bought an ‘07 VT600 VLX as my first bike. Picked it up three weeks ago for a steal and love it. I’m 5’10”; 190 lbs, and it does fine by me. I didn’t buy it to tour, just to hit the back roads. Also, I totally agree with your sentiments on contentment and the truest way to attain it. But I’m sometimes so good at convincing myself that material things will bring me happiness, that they’ll make my life better. It never works, though, not in the long run. That long-term contentment has to come from surrender. Thanks for the video, man.

    I must say I got nostalgia from this video. When i was a teen (ten years ago) i used to go ride with my dad in Southern Sweden with his bike. And seeing this has settled it for me, i'm getting a bike as soon as i get out of town!

    I have a 2004 VLX Shadow that I bought new. I literally have tried to kill this thing and @ 40K miles it still purrs. I have a Hypercharger intake and Vance & Hines exhaust upgrade and I had to jet up the carbs for the increased airflow. Man what a difference. One of the most tough and reliable motorcycles I have had the pleasure to own.

    I've been a dirt track rider a Enduro rider all my life. Just turned 57. Girlfriend brought me a 1999 VLX 650 to restore. Within a few days it spit sputtered and coughed. After warming up I took for a ride. Strange feeling to me after riding KLR'S but didn't take long with this bike to sink right in and get comfortable. Awesome bike. Thanks for your video

    I had a 99 vlx600 for several years, here's the mods I made:
    K&N air filter in factory air box,
    Hole sawed out the back end of the pipes, removing baffles completely,
    Rejetted the carb with a kit from Cobrajet, easy instructions,
    Replaced the seat with one from vt1300, some modification, much better comfort.
    Had bought a smaller rear sprocket for more top end, hadn't installed when I sold the bike.
    This is a great bike for trips under 100 miles, but lacks tall enough gearing for touring. Easy to ride, low maintenance, low seat height, handles great. I ride a 01 Roadking Classic now, sometimes I miss the lightweight, easy handling Shadow.

    I got the 2007 version of this bike. Take some things off the back, change to a smaller seat, add a HID light and whitewall tires; got that bobber look. I'm 5' 6", did over 3000 miles last summer. Nice bike, brakes seem a little weak. Anything over 45 minutes on the highway gets a bit cramped. Definitely does not like the cooler temperatures up in Eastern Canada in the fall. It sure scares the deer and it'll do 110 km/hr easily, a little loud though. Have stock pipes, great sound, wakes up the neighbours, good learner bike, you'll ride it for years, really fun. Otherwise no issues, planning to keep as a backup to the Honda Fury I'm hoping to get.

    • @jeffruebens8355
      @jeffruebens8355 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The front brake is designed so a new rider is not able to slide the front tire. It stops much better if you add an aftermarket stainless steel covered teflon front brake hose. Then you can slide the front tire on dry pavement with enough grip strength- I have found the back wheel will not lift off the pavement like a sportbike, with too much front brake power used.

I need light so I can pick it up if I drop it. I am interested in bobbing a V-twin. Very good commentary about the pipes and the intake! 9/10 people will jump into buying a used bike that has mods made to the pipes and intake, without a second of consideration if the jetting was done in a qualified shop and with proof of it. Nice bike!

    After watching test ride videos of many bikes, I keep coming back to this one. I'm 75 and have two knee replacements. I need a bike that's just big enough to haul my chubby butt around, but still light enough that I can handle it when I'm on it stopped. My last bike was a 1983Honda VT7500C. I gave that to my son for helping change a transmission in a car I had at the time. I like the Shadow line and think I will shop for one of these around here. They have an added advantage, they can only be bought used, so they are fairly inexpensive. Thanks for all your great ride reviews.

    I had one and it was my first motorcycle. I thought it was adequately geared. You just had to know the spread of speeds to the four gears. Now I don't think I took it much over 70 mph for any long duration, but back road riding in Northwest Illinois, I had some real nice rides. Great looking bike, but being light at 400 lbs and that really cool thinner front wheel made for interesting rides on grooved payment or windy days. But on a nice day it was a fun ride on an awesome looking bike.

    The VLX needs that standard Air Intake Box to warm up well under 60 degree F..They run on the lean side and need that warm air from the Air Box to enrich the mixture when not warm..Once they warm up they are better..If you jet the carb it will burn richer, and run better in cold weather but use more fuel..but they need the jetting power anyway..with free flow exhaust too..

    • @jeffruebens8355
      @jeffruebens8355 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Honda 600cc Shadow VLX has 4 gears. One of the last, like the 1936 Harley Knucklehead that was one of the first 4 speeds. After riding one 16 years, I do not think it needs 5 or 6 gears- my other bike is a 6 speed sportbike. You could add a bigger front sprocket and/or smaller back sprocket for less rpm at 75 mph, but then it would not take off from stoplights as well. In 2003 I added both Dynojet and a Dial-a-Jet kits to add more fuel for a louder exhaust and bigger air filter, and still had to file down the end of the pilot mixture screw to add more fuel. This is a great bike at 60 mph on curvy country roads. At 75 mph on long straight roads it vibrates a lot and is too exciting from the low quality brakes and suspension. If you are not a beginner, it stops better with an aftermarket stainless steel covered teflon front brake hose, so you can brake hard enough to slide the front tire. The back tire does not lift off the pavement much with maximum front braking. Like the Yamaha XS-650, a reliable fun cheap bike, but not as much vibration and it does not roast you at summer stop lights like the air cooled XS-650.

    • @jeffruebens8355
      @jeffruebens8355 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He slowed down the idle, so it probably stalls a lot easier until fully warmed up. Buy a long steel drill bit and add some holes in both back baffles for a louder exhaust, but it is best to rejet the carb or carbs for it- 1999 and newer has 1 carb. You have to rejet if you change the air filter for more flow.

    • @jeffruebens8355
      @jeffruebens8355 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Capable for riding all day at 75 mph, but it vibrates a lot above 65 mph and there is not a lot of extra power for merging or passing. Top speed is about 95 mph. Great for curvy country roads at 60 mph or less. Note this tank is dented because the handlebar ends are adjusted too low. The front brake is much better with an aftermarket stainless steel covered teflon hose. I have rode mine almost every Sunday for 16 years and plan to keep it many more years. I also have a 150 mph top speed sportbike that rides smoother and is better for 80 mph.

      it is a little bit bigger, but i think maybe you should consider a 750 shadow, or boulevard c50t

    60 or 70 is not topping this bike out. Top speed on this is just over 100mph. You can comfortably cruise at these speeds on this bike.

    Honest opinion, Honda VT600 shadow vs Yamaha 650 V-star. In Australia new riders are restricted to under 650cc and I cant decide between the two.
    and help would be much appreciated

      Heavy Toke no dude, im 6 feet and its very confortable, this is a small bike when compared to huge goldwings or 1800 vulcans, but comparison aside, its a big bike, big enough to have fun cruising and its pretty fast for what it is, faster than your average stock mustang from 0-60
