It ran pretty well after the local dealer got through with it but seemed lacking in power and throttle response as the miles racked up. At 60+k miles I did a full service and rejet to my specs. Throttle response went thru the roof and his mileage saw a 15% increase. When David gave me the bike a few years later he told me he had taken it for a Dyno run after I did my work. The same lack of oil to the "top" [heads at the same elevation as the crank] end happens with the old BMW airheads. There used to be a strange fetish among airhead owners to get the idle as low as possible. Because of the opposed cylinders and a heavy flywheel they would still run pretty smoothly at 800 rpm. At that slow rate, oil pressure was low and the big oil users like bearings used all the pressure before any oil could get to the "top" end or the timing chain. Mysterious valve train and timing chain damage happened. So the low idle problem is more about crank and cam bearings using all the oil rather than, as in the case of the Shadow, the heads being way above the oil pump. [Elevation seems to really make no difference; it's all about oil volume]. Nice video, Hoss!
Been wacthing alot of your videos bro got to say not only are you educational but hilarious aswell your videos are on par and help build confidence aswell. Keep up the good work bro. Ill be buying some stuff from you soon.
I got a buddy I ride with who rides a Honda 1100 shadow sabre (I think it is called that,) anyways the twin crankpin 1100, with the cool flame cut looking solid wheels, and it is a great running, strong dependable rider, he runs all day with Big Twin Twin Cams and Milwaukee 8s, , and sometimes people give him crap because of the sound, to which he replies," that's why I ride with you clowns, so your bikes mask the sound of mine when we're sitting idling at the light"
Nice video :) I like that you mentioned the few ACE single pin models also as it would be wrong to idle these up like this when the idle RPM for these models are 1000+-100 in the manual. 👍
Thanks for the video I’m a new shadow 750 aero owner. It has a tach and I’m guilty of dropping the idle for the sound. That will no longer be the case. Bringing it up to proper idle speed asap.

Excellent video, great insight and antics 🤣 I do have a question about how muffed I am with my 750c2b I was hoping for some input. She's been sitting for a couple years and I believe the engine is seized. I'm on day 2 of waiting for PB to drown the rings. I pushed a borescope down the cylinder and captured a video and was hoping you might be able to give any next-step-insight
Great video! Always love your stuff and your entertainment. Now I just need to find the one on how to put on straight pipes and tune the dual carbs on the VT1100C2 Saber. 😎
The guy who gave you the crystal ball...Was it... A man on a silver mountain? I own a Kawi, but the same generalities apply, so thanks for a thororugh and enjoyable video.
Got a VTX1300, what would cause a slow, to no crank when hot? Seems like the starter can't turn over. I have a new proper CCA battery, starter solenoid and the previous owner put in a new starter. When cold, turns over with no problems, get it warmed up, and you might get one turn before the starter doesn't turn, clicks and seems to be locked up. I have checked the ground cable, the power cables to the starter, and solenoid for good connection and resistance all checked good. The bike has 21k 2004, Cobra pipes, a jet kit with the side scoop... as far as I know, all factory upgrades.
Similar for Harley’s, too. Too many riders turn the idle down so much that the oil pumps pressure is too low to move oil around. Plus, when idles are too low, don’t forget the engine needs to get up to enuf power to get going with your buds. The engine speed needed to even let the clutch out needs to get up way over the potato idle. My big twin idle is recommended at 950-1000 rpm from a fully hottened up engine. I will take it for a half hour toot and then adjust my idle as needed to set it.
I have been collecting 1975-87 Honda GoldWings for last several years. One of them has Weber 40’s which I should have gotten a pair of Dellorto 36”…. I bought Shadow Seat from Crazylist I think it looks good on my GW.
Right on brother. Just subscribed. Trying to diagnose a front cylinder misfire......pretty sure your vids are going to be helpful. QUESTION: Same idle speed for a 1100? 2000 Spirit 1100. THANKS

Currently in the middle of my first bobber build '83 VY750 what are some things I can do to eliminate much of the bulky plastic garbage from the stock form. Or how can I mitigate tuning issues that may come from discarding the air box entirely?
Good video. Thank you! Can you answer one question I have - as Honda guy - I have 2008 vt750 with injection. Does it have something like an mass air flow sensor to detect the air volume it gets and mixes the gas accordingly to get the perfect air fuel mixture? Im planning to change out air filter to a more open one - can I do that without messing up the AFR?
I have a 2006 Shadow Spirit. How do i know if it is a single or double pin crank? My owners and service manual says idle speed shoul be 1,000 +/- 100 RPM. But i did buy the same tach and set my idle up to 1,200 for now
Don't have a Shadow, but this video made me really interested in having proper idle speed for shadows. By the way , when going up the rev range from 900 to 1200 the sound changes significantly, can the sound itself be used to tune the idle speed?
great video as always. i have been trying to find a way of doing this as need a rev counter for the reason. when is "how to add a fuel light to your shadow" video coming ????? as you never miss a little light till you don't have one
Is this mostly a problem in California heat? Ive built many engines, car and bike and I get oil to the top of the engine cranking over with the starter which is obviously a much lower rpm than any idle speed.
Dude, i have no manual for my VN800… do you know what my idle is supposed to be at ?! I thought mine was set High, it sounded high so i turned it down, but maybe too much? I need to know What mine needs to be set to 😅 1995’ Vulcan 800.
I'd love some Honda VTX series videos. For instance, I got a 1300 and I want the twin pin cranks from the 1800, how can I get 100hhp out the 1300. I saw a sportster 1200 unto 120hp so I'm sure a 1300 can pull 100 or close enough

Man,i watched most of your videos, you know well vlx and vt s .BUT,vlx 600 is SINGLE PIN,just like harley,u got that wrong. Its all.about oil pressure,as u said correctly.VLX motor is just a Transalp motor, except for trans is dual pin and vlx is single.Dont get me wrong, you do a great job and i enjoy every single one of yor videos.Humour and knowledge at their best.Cheers from Greece.
I had another learning thanks to you my man TJ, watching here from the Philippines. Got a Honda Steed vlx400🤟
Excellent video, great insight and antics 🤣
I do have a question about how muffed I am with my 750c2b I was hoping for some input. She's been sitting for a couple years and I believe the engine is seized. I'm on day 2 of waiting for PB to drown the rings. I pushed a borescope down the cylinder and captured a video and was hoping you might be able to give any next-step-insight
Buy a car
That's exactly what I did with my friend....what you said in the end...ok, so the valves on the shadow 750 are oil pressure regulated?
Great explanation, thanks, it's really useful knowledge 👍
Really enjoyed this video. The lesson on single and double pin cranks!
Cant wait to mod one, Thanks for the info I will be using it.
I had no idea the low idle would short the oil to the heads. Thanks.
🍻
Get a bag of ice
Great info I can’t wait to get my 2001 running and chopped, I have gotten your carb kit. Keep up the great work you do.
Thanks man!
👍
I have been collecting 1975-87 Honda GoldWings for last several years. One of them has Weber 40’s which I should have gotten a pair of Dellorto 36”…. I bought Shadow Seat from Crazylist I think it looks good on my GW.
🍻🍻🍻
Right on brother. Just subscribed. Trying to diagnose a front cylinder misfire......pretty sure your vids are going to be helpful.
QUESTION: Same idle speed for a 1100? 2000 Spirit 1100. THANKS
Kickass man! You'll get it!
Thanks for making this vid! love your content and products
Hearts and farts!
Love the content! Really helpful. On a single pin crank 2003 Shadow Ace. Idle should be around 1200 +-100? Thank You
Awesome work dude. You are brilliant with Honda's. As soon as you get stuff in stock for the Aero line I will definitely be ordering more stuff. Velocity stack set up and carburetor stuff.
Thanks for the info it's gonna help with my build
Glad to hear it! 🍻
Got my idle right at the same area. That little piece definitely comes in handy.
This is the way!
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS well, you’ve been a major help in “the way”. Still have a long ways to go before I’m where I want to be with the bike but, I’m learning that patience is the best way to approach building this vlx600
Best teacher in town..Thanks Man
Thank you!! Did you finish your homework?
Just figured out my issue in 12 mins. Thanks again
You are very welcome!!
This is amazing. I will do this. 👍 Do you happen to have a wire diagram for the headlights ?
I have a 400 and i wanna do this mod with the stack or pod filter but i cant seem to find what size they are 😅
I’m about to buy a Honda shadow 750 ACE 2001, is the single pin and dual carbs a bad thing?
Not at all. The ace is a dope bike! One carb per cylinder is race shit.
@@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS Thanks for the assurance :) I will buy it next week!
Dope advice and groovy sense of humor all the way! ;)
Thanks so much Don!!!
Dame with harleys,i built a chopper with a harley motor not tach, wanted to know how many rpms it was running found these, they work awsome,i got mine like 3 years ago, know your hearing alot about themonky thing is you cant turn them off but they last a long time.
Imines kinda beat up but it works!!! Finally got around to making a video!!! Thanks for watching!!
Currently in the middle of my first bobber build '83 VY750 what are some things I can do to eliminate much of the bulky plastic garbage from the stock form. Or how can I mitigate tuning issues that may come from discarding the air box entirely?
Check out our other awesome TH-cam videos!
As a v65 magna owner, i approve this message. Cams are expensive...
We need more videos like this everywhere. This is invaluable advice 🤌🏽
Thanks for the feedback! 🍻
Thanks for this video, I love my 2002 Honda Shadow Ace!
Thanks for watching and commenting!!!
Good video.
Not sure, we don't have a bike here that new, haha
I have a 2006 Shadow Spirit. How do i know if it is a single or double pin crank? My owners and service manual says idle speed shoul be 1,000 +/- 100 RPM. But i did buy the same tach and set my idle up to 1,200 for now
is there a way to mod the oil pump for more volume ?
there is not, ive looked into it and its just not even worth it, plus... why? just set the idel at the rioght speed.
can you get a thin oil hose to cylinder heads to keep it "hot and wet" !?
is it possible? is that gonna cause other problems
thanks for your time
Not sure what you're talking about, but we do love thinks hot and wet, like burritos.
Don't have a Shadow, but this video made me really interested in having proper idle speed for shadows. By the way , when going up the rev range from 900 to 1200 the sound changes significantly, can the sound itself be used to tune the idle speed?
if youve done it for 17 years, you can kinda get close, but even I prefer to use a tool to get it right.
Wonder if you can somehow reroute oil to the heads and keep the low rpm’s low and still get oil
no. honda had external oil lines on the 88 VT600, but realized this didnt do jack and so removed them for 89.
great video as always. i have been trying to find a way of doing this as need a rev counter for the reason. when is "how to add a fuel light to your shadow" video coming ????? as you never miss a little light till you don't have one
Sight gauges!!!
Is this mostly a problem in California heat? Ive built many engines, car and bike and I get oil to the top of the engine cranking over with the starter which is obviously a much lower rpm than any idle speed.
Thanks, you showed me a lot. I appreciate you brother…
🍻
Great video and information.
Thanks for the feedback! 🍻
Dude, i have no manual for my VN800… do you know what my idle is supposed to be at ?!
I thought mine was set High, it sounded high so i turned it down, but maybe too much?
I need to know What mine needs to be set to 😅
1995’ Vulcan 800.
sorry man i dont know the vulcans really
I'd love some Honda VTX series videos. For instance, I got a 1300 and I want the twin pin cranks from the 1800, how can I get 100hhp out the 1300. I saw a sportster 1200 unto 120hp so I'm sure a 1300 can pull 100 or close enough
does the Harley Milwaukee eight engine have the single pin crank.
pretty sure most if not all HD engines are single pin crankshaft design with two lobes.
@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS why does Harley still use single pin crank. no one else does.
@@concrete981 because they don't want to lose their sound? Strange hill to die on, clinging to outdated technology but whatever, I'm just here to ride stuff and build stuff🤷🏻♂️
