- This is some real Emo Music, and not that shit you listen to! Nothing against Alesana or Silverstein, but they have nothing to do with real emo or screamo.
Emo/Screamo bands are Rites of Spring, Orchid, Escapado, Saetia, Raein, Louise Cyphre, Johsua Fit For Battle, Danse Macabre or something like this.
And not BMTH, the used, blessthefall, a static lullaby, saosin, senses FAIL or funeral for a frind.

So many people bitching about what's real emo/screamo and some saying it doesn't matter what genre it is. Well what he's showing you IS Emo. Emo started as a subgenre of Hardcore Punk. Pioneered by Rites of Springs.(I'm not an expert at this subject so sorry if there are any misinformation).Then in the 1990s the aesthetics of Emotive Hardcore began to make a move at some areas. Emo was then "reinvented" in the 1990s mixing with Californian Pop Punk and Indie Rock. Pioneered by bands such as Sunny Day Real Estate, Jaw Breaker, Cap N Jazz, The Get Up Kids and Weezer. ( However through my experience some denied that these bands are Emo for their sound leaned more to Indie Rock than Hardcore Punk). This type of Emo is called Indie Emo or Midwest Emo. Then somehow near the end of the 1990s, with the popularity of Blink182-esque Pop Punk and the Midwest Emo Bands. Pop Punk Bands such as Sum 41, Good Charlotte, MCR, and etc.started to be called Emo when they have no relation to the Midwest or Hardcore sound. Nowadays in the more mainstream media, Emo is associated with guy liner, black, screamy/growly vocals and nasal vocals with angst. ( Nothing against those who like these type of bands but my purpose of commenting is to divide which is Midwest Emo, which is Emotive Hardcore, and which don't belong in the spectrum. Those who say it doesn't matter what genre it is, it DOES matter for if a kid who's listening to Rites of Spring ended up in the same boat with the kid listening to Alesana of course they don't want to be grouped in the same boat for their musical sound and ideals differentiate from each other. And also Screamo, some say it's not a genre but a technique of vocals and some say it is. The truth is it IS. Even though these bands have a similar scream style, the original screamo bands were far more violent and instrumentals were recorded in lo-fi and very energetic. They don't have clean singing either. To those wanting to search this music you can find a lot of bands in You Tube, Bandcamp, Social Media, Blogs and Websites. When searching emocore bands type in emotive hardcore or else you'll end up finding bands similar to the ones that are not emo. Similar when finding Screamo type in Skramz not Screamo or it'll be harder to find these bands. I don't really like any of the non-emo bands but I won't bash those who like them for musical taste is subjective. Thank You and Have a Good Day!🎸🎸🎸

I remember when I first started listening to what I'd call "real screamo" when I was 14 back in 2008 (ironically when this video was uploaded). I was so fucking eager about pointing out what "real screamo" and what "fake screamo" is. Now I'm 23. Still loving what I used to call "real screamo". Just as much as back then. But hell, I couldn't feel more cringy when thinking back to the time where I was like "NONO, start listening to REAL SCREAMO, kid!". If you are like that... Fine... You'll grow up one day too lol

I too used to be like this and still cringing over myself when thinking about the one year younger me. I'm 16 now and I feel like other people in my age have the brain of a 13 year old kid. Emo (Emocore) = Hardcore Punk / Post-Hardcore with emotional, angsty, bitter, sometimes angry lyrics (e.g. Rites Of Spring, Embrace, early My Chemical Romance, etc.)
Post-Emo / Midwest Emo = Indie Rock with the kinds of lyrics previously mentioned (e.g. Dashboard Confessional, Cap'n Jazz, American Football, etc.)
Emo Pop = Pop Punk with lyrics that sound like they're taken from a troubled, angsty, heartbroken teenager's diary (e.g. early Fall Out Boy, early Panic! At The Disco, Weezer, etc.)
It really isn't one single genre. Plus, genres evolve and mix over time which is a completely natural thing due to bands and artists having fun experimenting with different styles.
But I guess it varies from person to person. For instance, some may consider Post-Grunge a legit subgenre of the supergenre that is Grunge while some disagree just because of the fact that it's not "real"/normal Grunge, or some may only like a certain subgenre of Metal while calling all the others "fake" which in my opinion is nothing but close-minded bs.
Same with Emo. To me, Emo Pop and Post-Emo are definitely legit subgenres of the Emo-supergenre. If you say those weren't "real Emo", I mean yeah, they're definitely not Emocore, but at least accept them as subgenres.

Honestly for me it only sounds like the emo genre just changed over time... The what people call now emo sounds really similar to that music which some people think that is the "real emo". For example, Michael Jackson is the king of pop and even if Ariana Grande's music doesn't sound to some people that similar to his, it's still pop. It just changed over time...

This is correct, that’s why to me emo is within the person also, not just the music... things evolve just like people do, I think both the origins and what people say is emo now have α lot of similarities, it just evolved and changed like everything does... as long as the music fits the basic rules, for example, it’s emotional 😂, then it still works but as with anything when there’s change people will oppose it...

Anyway, this video is so true. Ok, very few people know what emo really is, but I find it funny that even these scene kids who call themselves emo, wear stupid clothes and even stupider haircuts, even they don't know what emo really is.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that music style change over time? Like what if people said that the rolling stone, nirvana, fall out boys etc weren't rock because they don't sound like elvis presley, since he is the king of rock? Music style change over time and get move vague and inclusive. They also often get mixed with other music types. For example, emo pop is a music category that mixes pop music and emo music and bands like the old fall out boy, the all american reject, the old panic! At the disco etc fit in that sub genres.
That being said, I still love bands like rites of spring, jaw breaker etc

David my point was that what makes a genre a genre change over time. what makes emo emo now is basically a punk song with emotional lyrics, but before it was more specific to one type of punk with emo lyrics. just like rock. before it was only music like elvis that was considered rock but the genre evolved to include bands like nirvana, metalica, rolling stones and even punk and emo bands.

@MichiEhrenlechner the thing is, there is actually two 'theories' on what exactly emo stands for. either 'emotive hardcore punk' OR 'emotionally charged hardcore punk'. both is clearly 'emotion-ridden' so claiming emo equals 'emotional' is not entirely wrong... but it's simply not the whole story

Real Emo (before this coined term) comes from the 80s during the Washington D.C. scene, around the time of Black Flag. I am so glad you are playing REAL emo.

I'm emo and I listen to MCR PATD SWS BVB ATL BMTH but I also listen to songs like crazy in love or slow songs that have a good meaning to them. Emo means emotional. That's why the real emos actually know the music they listen to has a good message in it, just explained in rock, screamo, or even a slow pace.

I listen to those bands you mentioned, and things that people believe is emo music now. And either way it doesn't matter, because people will do whatever they want. Perhaps if you weren't kinda rude about it, maybe there wouldn't be internet fighting on this comment section I think people should at least listen to some of the old emo bands, before getting pissed cause maybe they would like it. :P

i love that someone finally got it right, their are so many dumd kids which just stole a genre and just called matelcore (no it does not mean metal hardcore, its just the simplest and plainest version of metal ... its the core of it. And scream harcore and emotive hardcore are a dirreretive from Punk, the earliest Bands were basicly Punk but with less "macho" in it, no9 offense there, all my friends are Punks and I love Punk. Btw screamcore is a mix of grindcore and emotive hardcore ( which is as just said a version of punk)) emocore and ruined a whole scene, thgats why I am angry. I like a lot of those songs in the begining, and the songs near the end (the "real" emo music) are songs that i've never really heard before, but i liked them too. I don't consider any of them emo songs though. (maybe thats because i'm not emo but still like them)

I have this argument with one of my friends all the time. These bands you think aren't emo in fact aren't. You're right, to be "real" emo you must have been a part of the hardcore scene that spawned it however that doesn't mean we can't refer to the things that are derivative of the original movement as emo esk.

I listen to screamo, grunge, and punk music ect.but music does not define who we are or how we act. the music we make defines who we are in a way but thats not the point. emo is a form of expression through rebellion and a metalcore lifestyle. emo seems different to you and me cause no one is correct the real answer is being yourself and create new things of your own for example I mix emo with punk and grunge its my own way of saying who I am. so if you are emo and you like being emo then do it and stay true to yourself.
