What Is Real Emo Vs What Is Not

  • Vlog. The truth. Listen to these real emo bands before you write off emo as bad. Emo is not about cutting, a haircut, and a pair of jeans, or about teenagers or queer sexuality or homosexuality. It is about good, strong music, that is a form of post-hardcore, hardcore, melodic hardcore, punk rock, pop punk, indie rock and nothing more. Real emo is not about gimmicks or something to sell to alienated 13yr olds. It is not about suicide. It is not about fashion. It is not about christian rock worship music. It is about composition and good music which majority of it has been underground, very overlooked, unrecognized, ignored, not promoted, and so forth. Not say if it did become successful would make it "not real." Just the media, mainstream trendsetters, corporate product creators who see dollar signs in their eyes, utterly killed it, stole it's identity, and said "we are god, and this is what emo is, and by the way ignore the music part (which was the main point), just be trendy, young, and stupid, and buy in." and now we have "omg black veil brides is my favorite band and I am emo....rites of spring? embrace? who are they" Hook, line and sinker.
    To be honest, out of any music genre, emo is just about being human, and showing human traits through music, and isen't focused on anything else. It's the one genre where you get to actually be that.

    It's really hard to explain emo to people these days.But since metalcore bands like Asking Alexandria and Escape the fate have risen people think that's emo ,I kinda wouldn't blame them.It's become such a bastardized term.Btw... Cap'n Jazz rocks!

    • @23D1998
      @23D1998 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "Metalcore" has become as bastardized as emo. Drowningman, Systral, Deadguy, Botch or even Converge are metalcore, AA and EtF are not

    God, I am so glad someone else gets the genre. I am so sick of people associating a genre as a style and practically ruining the style. THANK YOU so much for this. You don't know how much it bothers me when people call Fall Out Boy, or Panic! at the Disco emo, or that My Chemical Romance stated that they were the father of the emo generation! Ah that cringes me. Thank you for giving me hope!!!

      i would consider mcr more emo than patd and fob. mcr is very emotional and i feel like it is on the less hardcore side of emo. it's a different sound but it's emo. i don't know. i concern myself an emo but i feel like some subgenres overlap and blend and it's hard to put a lot of alternative subgenres into one category. it not fair, either. but i definitely do NOT agree with fob and patd and mcr being the father of the emo generation, tho... but i see why ppl would think that. i hate when people bash other emos though. emo is a spectrum, imo...

    I'm 13. I enjoy Fall Out Boy and the older stuff by Panic! At the Disco, but I know they aren't emo. I love bands like American Football, Sunny Day Realestate, fugazi, Orchid, etc. It really ticks me off that everybody thinks that bands like twenty one pilots and panic are emo and know nothing about the actual genre.
    If you want to listen to some newer really good emo bands, I recommend Free Throw, Have Mercy, and Boston Manor.

    I definitely understand your point of view. It might be offensive when someone takes something you love and says about it such wrong things. I guess, there are two types of "emo". Firs of them is genre of music, that has nothing simular with second deffinition of this word, which is subculture, mainly consisted of angry and depressed (usually stupid&pathetic as well) teenagers who love all that scene stuff (me). Both of them are ok, the only problem is there wasn't invented another name for second meaning and world started thinking that it's the only one that exist.

    Haha. We were all having this same "what is emo" argument 15 years ago. Turns out that no one gives a shit and it was a total waste of my time, as it is yours. I'm 35, I listen to what I want, I don't worry about trends or labels, my tastes range from Twelve Hour Turn to Puccini and back again, and life is awesome. To do anything else would be just unnecessarily spent energy and will cut you off from some cool experiences. I always hated the name "math rock" but I'll still rock the fuck out to Don Caballero, Faraquet, and Braid, and they sound nothing alike. If I'd been that concerned about the label, I might have missed out.

    • @ckinch
      @ckinch  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +goassen hrd Never heard of papercut massacre or funeral for a friend. But the other ones are post-hardcore bands and underoath is screamo. Billy talent is post-hardcore pop punk with traces of emo, underoath would be screamo which would be emo, and silverstein would be post-hardcore emo. They are mainstream stuff that is marketed, but yeah it would still be considered emo or it at least has traits of it.

    I dunno, I maybe would've just put Boys Like Girls as pop-rock. We had a few bands similar to them in the UK in the 00s like Busted, McFly and Son of Dork. I think emopop is definitely rockier than that.

    No image? I'm 45 and been into all this biz for quite a spell. You gotta realize how the mainstream culture presented itself in the mis 80's. The photos you see of the D.C. Bands dressed in a style that you consider unassuming or even anti-fashion need to be viewed in context. First off, beatle cuts and corduroy pants were considered laughable to your average teenager. As for shaved heads, psycho killers, cancer patients and the emotional. Progressive post punk and really any of the more "arty" developing strains of punk was super affected .

    • @wickedlee664
      @wickedlee664 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A bit more....
      If anything it was straight up punk rock that had abandoned the heavy handed trappings of youth rebelión and shock tactics by the close of the 80's. "Emo" kids (the first time I heard the term was in an article in maximumrockandroll called "emo boy goes thrift shopping" ) were totally dressing up in silly outfits and putting on a rock and roll show. I credit the rise of Emo with the return of exiting stage shows to underground music. It was all super self conscious.
      Oh, and Christian music? Not count it out. Bad Brains praise Jah n gospel music is some weepy stuff. Emo city. As for posers , they prob don't care and just like to make people stare. Let em be and maybe they will get hip. It could be that listening to the bands that you think are lame will lead them to the real shit.
      Razors never die.

    would it be easier is to let the neo'emos keep their genre, and the punk emos change their genre name.

    emo is a type of punk rock, when you mix core with it, you get bands similar to black veil brides, and often time the kids that cut; like that stuff, because of their "get up" and the the the pictures of andy stitching his face with a needle is especially confusing, cause he is not stitching a "self harm" wound up. and i hang out with kids like that, they complain about how we never care about them, and im thinking to myself "fuck.....when i was like that, people probably looked at me like im looking at you. no wander why i always got beaten up"

  • @ada-te9rf

    Okay can I say this, I agree with this thatcsocietybis getting the emo thing all wrong, but pop punk is not emo, post hardcore is not emo. There is a huge significance of what emo is. Listen to Neck deep, then listen to microwave. Neck deep is far from emo, though some of their songs sound a little similar. Microwave has a distinct way of how they do their music, such as other emo bands. Just had to say that. I'm really passionate about pop punk music cuz I love it.

      Ada Carter there's a subgenre called emo pop which is a fusion of emo and pop punk. this includes bands like early paramore, jawbreaker, taking back sunday, early fall out boy and so on.

    Emo isn't just a music genre. If you are 'emo' you can just like emo music, or you can have the 'emo lifestyle'. You dye your hair, wear a certain style, listen to emo music, and express yourself (hugely) (usually with poetry)

      What do you mean he talks about him self? He explains that emo isn't about cutting yourself or wearing makeup, and he also explains that emo came from hardcore punk but didn't want to be apart of bashing people up like what punk use to be in the 80s
