What Is Real Emo Vs What Is Not

- Vlog. The truth. Listen to these real emo bands before you write off emo as bad. Emo is not about cutting, a haircut, and a pair of jeans, or about teenagers or queer sexuality or homosexuality. It is about good, strong music, that is a form of post-hardcore, hardcore, melodic hardcore, punk rock, pop punk, indie rock and nothing more. Real emo is not about gimmicks or something to sell to alienated 13yr olds. It is not about suicide. It is not about fashion. It is not about christian rock worship music. It is about composition and good music which majority of it has been underground, very overlooked, unrecognized, ignored, not promoted, and so forth. Not say if it did become successful would make it "not real." Just the media, mainstream trendsetters, corporate product creators who see dollar signs in their eyes, utterly killed it, stole it's identity, and said "we are god, and this is what emo is, and by the way ignore the music part (which was the main point), just be trendy, young, and stupid, and buy in." and now we have "omg black veil brides is my favorite band and I am emo....rites of spring? embrace? who are they" Hook, line and sinker.
To be honest, out of any music genre, emo is just about being human, and showing human traits through music, and isen't focused on anything else. It's the one genre where you get to actually be that.

Thanks for explaining. My daughter mentioned emo, but she didn't explain it and I had no idea what she was talking about.
It's really hard to explain emo to people these days. But since metalcore bands like Asking Alexandria and Escape the fate have risen people think that's emo ,I kinda wouldn't blame them. It's become such a bastardized term.Btw... Cap'n Jazz rocks!
"Metalcore" has become as bastardized as emo. Drowningman, Systral, Deadguy, Botch or even Converge are metalcore, AA and EtF are not
WarmSoftKitty It is a genre... did you even watch the video?
Drowning But Not Waving He refers to Escape the Fate as Emo-Post Hardcore / Screamo. Check out the description of the video and it seems like a pretty interesting categorization
God, I am so glad someone else gets the genre. I am so sick of people associating a genre as a style and practically ruining the style. THANK YOU so much for this. You don't know how much it bothers me when people call Fall Out Boy, or Panic! at the Disco emo, or that My Chemical Romance stated that they were the father of the emo generation! Ah that cringes me. Thank you for giving me hope!!!
WarmSoftKitty Emo is a music genre
Yay finally someone understands me
i would consider mcr more emo than patd and fob. mcr is very emotional and i feel like it is on the less hardcore side of emo. it's a different sound but it's emo. i don't know. i concern myself an emo but i feel like some subgenres overlap and blend and it's hard to put a lot of alternative subgenres into one category. it not fair, either. but i definitely do NOT agree with fob and patd and mcr being the father of the emo generation, tho... but i see why ppl would think that. i hate when people bash other emos though. emo is a spectrum, imo...
I'm 13. I enjoy Fall Out Boy and the older stuff by Panic! At the Disco, but I know they aren't emo. I love bands like American Football, Sunny Day Realestate, fugazi, Orchid, etc. It really ticks me off that everybody thinks that bands like twenty one pilots and panic are emo and know nothing about the actual genre.
If you want to listen to some newer really good emo bands, I recommend Free Throw, Have Mercy, and Boston Manor.
Orchid and freethrow slam. I recomend you check out commander slamander, they slap. Also use reddit for new emo stuff if you dont already.
Sleepless I haven't heard somebody ever say that something "slams". If something "slams", is it good or bad?
Jax LaPoint He classified them as Emo Pop in the description - I would agree.
American football are great! If you like orchid, check out Pageninetynine (if you haven’t)
i LOVE free throw!!
I'm just like "hey, I listen to Indian summer and the saddest landscape"
Both are heavily underrated emo bands.
Angery son is one of my favorite songs
THANK YOU!!!! Someone has really needed to point this out, thank you! Great video!
I'm 38 years old and experienced a lot of the evolution of Hardcore to Post-Hardcore to Emo/Indie. Great video. I agree it's annoying when people don't really know the history of a genre of music.
Thank you! Everyone I talk to thinks I like Black Veil Brides when I say I like Emo music. Shit pisses me off so much. Thanks for the video man.
Le Stefano Some of their songs can be classified as such.
+Alpha Zalgo no
Andres Nava Some of MCR's songs on Bullets are emo. P!aTD and SWS are pop-punk/pop rock/jazz and really poppy post-hardcore respectively.
Alpha Zalgo sws are not pop punk at all
Andres Nava Oh, I thought I put the inverse of what I did. I'll edit that, SWS is post-hardcore and P!aTD is pop-punk.
Me: listens to Modern Baseball and cries
+Dan Tyler Modern Baseball is a revival band. But they are a decent band...
Literally wearing a MoBo shirt right now, haha
I love the fact you included so many bands
That bugs me to not all emos are depressed, mental,or gay i mean some are and thats fine but its all about the music
Yes... thank you. Your band list in the descript is perfect too.
thank you for explaining this for this generation ! ive been explaing this some what the same way to people that miss use the term!
bless this video. the list in the description is also very accurate.
I’m emo af and love punk music
Emo is a sub genre of punk
His shirt
I've always rejected the emo label - I alway called the music post hardcore but I was one of those "don't label me" people LOL this was a good explanation, great video 👍
Chris Kinch What are your thoughts on isthisbandemo.com?
Handy tip to find out if a band's emo or not: just search the band's name into isthisbandemo.com
Also, thanks for this video, as someone who's a big fan of proper emo bands, I find it annoying when people label stuff like BVB and MCR as 'emo' bands. So much that when I mention that I like emo, I have to clarify that I don't mean bands like MCR
MCR is not even a band. So, how can it be an emo band?
No why must u hurt me this way
Mcr's first album is emo, and their secound is good posthardcore but black parade and on isnt emo at all.
Rob Horrocks That website totally refutes all of his claims in the video!! I feel that the creators of that website are trying to disassociate themselves from the emo bands for the 2000':
I love how he really explains it
I am 11 and I am emo, though I think of suicide and cutting, but don't do it. CAUSE HELL IM SCARED IF NEEDLES
I didn't not know weezer was emo now I'm glad I know
I agree I was just a little shocked because I listened to them all the time w
hen I was little
I definitely understand your point of view. It might be offensive when someone takes something you love and says about it such wrong things. I guess, there are two types of "emo". Firs of them is genre of music, that has nothing simular with second deffinition of this word, which is subculture, mainly consisted of angry and depressed (usually stupid&pathetic as well) teenagers who love all that scene stuff (me). Both of them are ok, the only problem is there wasn't invented another name for second meaning and world started thinking that it's the only one that exist.
Brand New is emo right? I thought they were but they are not listed in the description. Also I'm glad some one can explain what emo actually is!
Wagnerds Clan yep, they are!
Brand New is emopop
kind of. they were never part of an actual "wave" of emo, but they take heavy influence from actual accredited emo staples.
Id say theyre an in-betweener.
Well this comment aged terribly
Asking Alexandria....Awesome
Black veil brides.......Awesome
Does it really matters what is or isnt?
Btw i dont mean i only listen to that, i like these bands TOO.
Oh my god go home
WarmSoftKitty nice b8 m8
WarmSoftKitty did you call those heavy metal? Elitists would kill you for that.
i love both those bands too but they aren't emo
Thank you for this video, but you forgot about Emoviolence (even though Emoviolence is basically just Screamo with Powerviolence influence.), still a great video.
+Chris Kinch Yeah, I remember listening to this Orchid song and I was like WTF? This sounds kind of like Grindcore.
***** Orchid is the only example I can think of, so yeah, you're right my friend.
I was listening to hospital for souls by bmth and my friend was like let me see your writs for a second. I looked at her and walked away I felt like I was insulted
Yeah but bmth is not actual emo. It is exactly part of that emo metalcore thing. I listen to them as well but it is lol
i feel that on a spiritual level tbh
I see you have not listed La Dispute :p. Please include them they are an awesome band
bro awesome!!!!!! stuff!!!!!!^^ great video^^ also jw u dint u mention from first to last or arma angelus^^ jw wondering cuz u mentioned fob^^
What's your opinion on the midwestern emo revival?
Are you a fan of the hotelier?
great vid! do you like cap'n jazz and jeromes dream?
+Alec “TheAlec” McGrory some of cap n jazz songs I like yeah. Song I like the most by them is called "oh messy league". The other band I never heard of.
Haha. We were all having this same "what is emo" argument 15 years ago. Turns out that no one gives a shit and it was a total waste of my time, as it is yours. I'm 35, I listen to what I want, I don't worry about trends or labels, my tastes range from Twelve Hour Turn to Puccini and back again, and life is awesome. To do anything else would be just unnecessarily spent energy and will cut you off from some cool experiences. I always hated the name "math rock" but I'll still rock the fuck out to Don Caballero, Faraquet, and Braid, and they sound nothing alike. If I'd been that concerned about the label, I might have missed out.
Don't sweat the small stuff, man. Also, listen to more Unwound. th-cam.com/video/VietF-y12Tc/w-d-xo.html
This guy gets it
Still the most underrated video on TH-cam.
Check out bob tilton from the UK they were the UK verison of emo indie from mid to late 90's and they influenced bands like mogwai, also what do you think of the band FAR.
Hi ! this is a very good video ! what do you think about : papercut massacre, billy talent, underoath, silverstein and funeral for a friend ?
+goassen hrd Never heard of papercut massacre or funeral for a friend. But the other ones are post-hardcore bands and underoath is screamo. Billy talent is post-hardcore pop punk with traces of emo, underoath would be screamo which would be emo, and silverstein would be post-hardcore emo. They are mainstream stuff that is marketed, but yeah it would still be considered emo or it at least has traits of it.
+Chris Kinch ok thank's ! Do you know other band of screamo or post hardcore ?
Planes Mistaken For Stars first EP album is really good. Embrace, Rites of Spring, Rain (all part of the revolution summer 1986 washington dc first wave emo, post-hardcore movement). Those are all good. I Hate Myself. Policy of 3 song Nine Years Old. Taking Back Sunday, Tell All Your Friends album.
+Chris Kinch ok thank you ! 😊
No mention of hot cross or Saetia?
I'd totally put the Weakerthans on that list. Probably the "Emo-Indie (90's)" list
thanks for guide dude i appreciate oldschool emocore like embrace i write now paper🇵🇭👏cheer up
Good work dude
Duster, american football, midwest pen pals. thats emo right?
+Chris Kinch dude, you should totally check them out, i thought their chord progressions had setteled the emo sound, but i don't know, how about slint?
duster is considered slowcore. still amazing though
not emo but you neeed to listen to duster. amazing, amazing, amazing melodic, hazy, melancholic sacramento slowcore band
I dunno, I maybe would've just put Boys Like Girls as pop-rock. We had a few bands similar to them in the UK in the 00s like Busted, McFly and Son of Dork. I think emopop is definitely rockier than that.
Hi ! what is the genre of Systeme Of A Down ?
(sorry for my bad english)
+Chris Kinch okay ! thank's ;)
No image? I'm 45 and been into all this biz for quite a spell. You gotta realize how the mainstream culture presented itself in the mis 80's. The photos you see of the D.C. Bands dressed in a style that you consider unassuming or even anti-fashion need to be viewed in context. First off, beatle cuts and corduroy pants were considered laughable to your average teenager. As for shaved heads, psycho killers, cancer patients and the emotional. Progressive post punk and really any of the more "arty" developing strains of punk was super affected .
A bit more....
If anything it was straight up punk rock that had abandoned the heavy handed trappings of youth rebelión and shock tactics by the close of the 80's. "Emo" kids (the first time I heard the term was in an article in maximumrockandroll called "emo boy goes thrift shopping" ) were totally dressing up in silly outfits and putting on a rock and roll show. I credit the rise of Emo with the return of exiting stage shows to underground music. It was all super self conscious.
Oh, and Christian music? Not count it out. Bad Brains praise Jah n gospel music is some weepy stuff. Emo city. As for posers , they prob don't care and just like to make people stare. Let em be and maybe they will get hip. It could be that listening to the bands that you think are lame will lead them to the real shit.
Razors never die.
would it be easier is to let the neo'emos keep their genre, and the punk emos change their genre name.
Neo emo is mostly pop punk and scenecore
emo is a type of punk rock, when you mix core with it, you get bands similar to black veil brides, and often time the kids that cut; like that stuff, because of their "get up" and the the the pictures of andy stitching his face with a needle is especially confusing, cause he is not stitching a "self harm" wound up. and i hang out with kids like that, they complain about how we never care about them, and im thinking to myself "fuck.....when i was like that, people probably looked at me like im looking at you. no wander why i always got beaten up"
+Le Stefano [2]
Okay can I say this, I agree with this thatcsocietybis getting the emo thing all wrong, but pop punk is not emo, post hardcore is not emo. There is a huge significance of what emo is. Listen to Neck deep, then listen to microwave. Neck deep is far from emo, though some of their songs sound a little similar. Microwave has a distinct way of how they do their music, such as other emo bands. Just had to say that. I'm really passionate about pop punk music cuz I love it.
Ada Carter there's a subgenre called emo pop which is a fusion of emo and pop punk. this includes bands like early paramore, jawbreaker, taking back sunday, early fall out boy and so on.
Laughed my ass off when I saw "The used" on the list. I just listen to music, I don't really categorize anything. My uncle is 30 years old and "The used" is still his favorite band.
This guy is 30 and an emo yess its not a phase
Emo isn't just a music genre. If you are 'emo' you can just like emo music, or you can have the 'emo lifestyle'. You dye your hair, wear a certain style, listen to emo music, and express yourself (hugely) (usually with poetry)
+pikachu_x
lol you just explained me to a T lol
This is the fucking stupidest thing I've ever read
you should do a vid on shoegaze
this is awesome thank you
Amen brother. Orchid is still my fav band ( its skramz, i know) but still :)
great video!
This is the best video i've ever seen.
jeans, short chain wallet or carabiner keys, t-shirt, and low profile sneakers. maybe a short sleeve a plaid button down or even a sweater vest - all acceptable. Beebout = Lumberjack.. NICE!!!! lol
Thanks. Because my friend on psn on LBP2 is an emo. Now i understand.
I told my friend I liked emo music and she asked to see my wist I was so offended
dafuq >
Ya because music is about expressing yourself and maybe they feel sad
How do you know emanuel nice
This guy knows wassup
Well fugazi isn't emo but they inspire emo in early 90s
What would bring me the horizon and pierce the veil be? What's about P!ATD?
not sure about bmth cause I've never heard from them but P!ATD and Pierce the Veil are definitely emo
+Samuel Pearson Oh okay thanks :) You should look at some BMTH songs!
I mean I love BMTH but after their Thats the Spirit album, they are more hardcore/post-hardcore, where as before with Sempiternal and Suicide Season, they were more screamo/deathcore
P!ATD is emo-pop, Pierce the Veil is post-hardcore and Bring Me the Horizon used to be metalcore, but their newest album I think is just alternative rock.
+Joseph Martin I think you're confusing screamo with something else.
I see them Green day posters! 👌
FrankThatCrank 101 fRANK thooo
Jody YASSS
CrankThatFrank is super poser
someone finally understands
omg this dude gets meh yayyyy
You forgot Madina Lake
Garden Variety was not a pop punk band. Post hardcore yes.
I know right I'm ten and I like it if you can't take emo music your can't take as much as a fifth grader !
im a pisces you're old enough to speak correctly and proofread your writing. Plus you probably cant take early title fight(aka not hyperview) which is a pretty basic hardcore/emo band.
Ty 3
This guy hits the nail on the head!!! I love bands like Camber, Sunny Day Real Estate, Fugazi, Husker Du, and all kinds of other ill shit...
Michael J. Ingram I love this guy!!! Here iI am, African American, a guitarist for 26 years, loving great bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Fugazi, Dinosaur, Jr, Camber, The Get Up Kids, and non emo metal core like Architects, AWESOME!!!
well put..
alesana is not epost.harcore emo?

Bright Eyes is GOAT
Orchid and Saetia-> screamo

The vibrator...

Weird homophobia brah
HASKER DU
husker du yeah loving them. greetings from the netherlands
You are not emo
No one is emo
Hahaha, you're funny. Cool joke.
Joe Taylor I am
no he talks about his self the hole Dam time
What do you mean he talks about him self? He explains that emo isn't about cutting yourself or wearing makeup, and he also explains that emo came from hardcore punk but didn't want to be apart of bashing people up like what punk use to be in the 80s
