This is just lovely Dale. I remember enjoying this with my Nan in England. They are delicious, I love mincemeat pie also! My Granddad always added so e brandy to his! Lol I also love currents! My goodness, this sure takes me back. Thank you! As always, you are a blessing. I have enjoyed more memories, via your baking than I can ever remember in my lifetime! I can also remember going to the fresh market during the holidays to buy penny bags of spices for the Christmas Cakes! And the. The butcher for fresh lard, lol! I just enjoyed this tonight. Ahhhh, now I can dream of yummy things from the past! I will be baking this soon! Bake some biscuits for Angel!!! Lol! 🥰🕊🙏🌞
My grandmother on my Dad's side always had mincemeat pie at the holidays, and I loved them! She was a preacher's wife, and on the U.S. Plains with her nonexistent budget, she always prepared the best homemade treats around. Your Eccles Cakes look just as beautiful as her sweet treats, round or not. Well done!
What a great job Dale, they look yummy. Eccles cakes originate from a small town in what originally was Lancashire but is now part of Greater Manchester after the shuffling of the borders. Eccles was my first posting as a ‘Beat Bobby’ back in 1979, when we frequently took advantage of the Eccles cakes, I’m retired 10 years now so this was a pleasant reminder of happy days. Thanks Dale
Dale. there is a sugar sold in the US, called ''Sugar in the RAW'', also known properly as Turbinado sugar. looks alot like the sugar you have. with all the wonderful stuff you cook and bake, I sure wish I was a realitive nearby or at least a good friend neighbor.
@@DaleCalderCampobello . just to let you know, yesterday I found that special name sugar you used, I said it right out loud, ''there is that sugar Mr. Dale was talking about'', surprised me to see it.
Thank you Dale for a wonderful memory. It has been over 60 years since I had Eccles cakes. That was when I lived in Canada. The thing I have always missed since living in the States is the neighborhood bakeries where you could buy all these lovely treats. Each one having it's own distinct flavor. I may just have to have a go at trying to make these, I am not sure I will be able to find the currants though. Have a Blessed day.
Thank you Margaret hope you can find currants. You can get them onlind at nuts.com. nuts.com/driedfruit/raisins/currants.html mnuts.com/driedfruit/raisins/currants.html
Another commenter from England UK here, just confirming that our Ground Mixed Spice seems to be the same as the pumpkin mix you used, and that Eccles Cakes are available year-round in bakeries.
Hi Dale, I’m in UK...and I often make Eccles cakes, they are sold in supermarkets all year round, but not as nice as home made. They are not a Christmas thing like mince pies. Your pumpkin spice has the same ingredients as our mixed spice so should taste the same. I’ve never used bought pastry, never occurred to me, has now tho! Thank you for sharing.
Early morning - sitting in front of a fire with a cup of coffee, and watching a Dale Calder video. A great way to start the day:) Thanks Dale for this video and recipe. I could hear Angel in the background as you began to eat the Eccles LOL I shuddered as you cut the slits in the Eccles thinking the filling would overflow while they were baking LOL. They turned out beautifully! I've never heard of Eccles before. They look delicious! I'm going to give them a try. Wishing you and Angel an amazing day!
These look like something you would make around the holidays, I love your recipes because most of them are new to me, it’s a lot of fun, thank you so much😇😇😇
Dale looked in my cupboard for the mixed spice it has cinnamon, coriander, caraway, nutmeg, ginger and cloves and the make is Schwartz, great video as usual
They look so good Dale 😃 I made this at school about 48 years ago! But now buy shop ones. So you now have inspired me to make my own 😁 Thankyou as always for letting us into your lovely home 😍 By the way here in England you can buy them all year round, whereas mince pies are only eaten at christmas time (no meat) 😃 Take care xxx
Never heard of this before. I told grandmother the people lied about mincemeat. She laughed and explained that when she was little mincemeat was a minced( fine chopped meat). I thought it must be hundred years ago.
Awesome. I first had Eccles cakes in Brantford Ontario when I lived there 20 years ago. I'm in Ottawa now and cannot find them so I've been searching a bit ofr these. Yours look very delicious. Apparently they are made without spice in the traditional recipes I've seen from England. Thanks Dale...I miss home...I miss Nova Scotia.

They look wonderful, Dale. Reminds me of a filled raisin cookie the Amish make in this area that I absolutely love. I could go for one of those cookies you have with a nice cup of tea right now. Lovely video, your cooking videos are so relaxing. Xx
Thank you for showing us these. I've never seen these before, but I do remember my Meme making mincemeat pie. I only made mincemeat pie one time for my own family and it was too rich and sweet for them. It's an acquired taste. I agree with you about the parchment and wishing to find butter pastry. You are a wonderful baker! 😋. Yvonne
This is now my fourth time watching this video in the last hr. I got to the end the first time and my 3 yr old saw you..... We are now repeatedly watching "Santa" bake lol. I keep telling her No it's Dale.... But I can't convince her you're not Santa :)
That filling looked yummy, and I'm not even fond of currants/raisins! What a nice treat with a cup of tea. I agree with you about puff pastry; all-butter is so much better than the weird oily kind. Any time I see all-butter puff in a store, I buy a couple extra packages to stash in the freezer. Sometimes our local natural foods store carries all-butter puff. Also in the US, I believe Whole Foods sells it.
🌼🌼Greetings Dale, this looks so tasty! English mincemeat is a taste from childhood I adore. This recipe is a bit similar, can't wait to try it! Using actual dried currants would also taste wonderful in this!! Have a lovely week🌼🌼
Dale, watched the video again- just really enjoy your works. I wanted to ask you if you have been making any sour dough bread lately or if you are making cheese yet? Those videos are really great. I can hardly wait for your trips to the cabin, seeing you and Angel snuggling on your couch, with snow falling and fire blazing---AWESOME! Thanks.

@@DaleCalderCampobello These were tasty and really quite easy to make ... I sprinkled mine with maple sugar though just to give it a try. Likely not much difference after cooking but maybe a bit less sweet. Will make again.

Hello Dale....Your Eccles Cakes looked lovely! I'm sure they originate from Manchester in the UK and can be bought year round from supermarkets and bakeries over here. The Pumpkin Spice that you used is very similar to Mixed spice however Mixed Spice contains other Spices like Cloves, Coriander, Allspice, Ginger and Caraway, I think Cinnamon being the dominant flavour. Its used in Christmas Cake along with other baked goods.
ah, well done, dale! that time of year again... my favorite! never had an eccles cake but we always had mincemeat pies around the holidays. my mom did not make them from scratch but the only kind she swore by was an english brand which i can still find in very select stores. otherwise, there is another brand that does not hold a candle to the one i grew up with. btw, my local mennonite grocery store does carry mincemeat with real meat! haven't had the courage to try it though!
I can never hear the word mincemeat without thinking about Greg having a piece of Mom’s pie and he asked for two scoops of ice cream on it...he’d never had and didn’t expect actual meat in it LOL. He had quite the reaction if you remember.
A very creditable eccles cake there Dale - I've bought and eaten them in Salford just outside Manchester (the village of Eccles is subsumed into the Salford conurbation these days and it's not the classiest of places I have to say, unlike the beautiful village of Bakewell where the well-known tarts, or pies, come from!)
You peaked my curiosity when you spoke of the mixed spice. Believe it or not Amazon carries it,appears to ship from England. Company is Schwartz. It must be delicious it gets 5 ⭐️. This looked so good! We need sample tube!!!!👍😊
