  • I'm taking a new approach to this channel! Over the last 2 years, I've been diving deeper than ever into photography and videography, and having amassed enough gear and hopefully experience, I'm beginning to start making tech videos that aim to help out beginners and interested photographers, videographers, and gear heads with choosing the best equipment for their needs.
    This video is about the Panasonic Lumix GX85, which has been my workhorse video camera for the last 15 months now. I've shot everything from events, weddings, interviews, and promotional material on it both paid and voluntary. It's also a camera that I've been bringing around for my general purpose and travel photography.
    But how does this 4-year old camera stack up in 2020? Watch this video to find out!

      Actually, you don't need ANY music at all while you are talking. However loud or soft it is distracting, apart from the piece you chose being annoyingly repetitive. That aside, the GX80/85 is a great little camera.

    I have been using the GX80 for three years, mostly for stills. I love it and can agree with everything you said here. The lens lineup is the most impressive of any mirror less system.

    Thank You,
    This has to be the best review I have watched on TH-cam. .( I do watch alot)
    After reading other comments, I had to go back and watch again, the first time I was not
    aware of the background music.
    So obviously I didn't find the music too loud.

    I enjoyed your enthusiasm and joy in owning this camera. Your examples and story are well told. Keep up the great work. My story is different coming from still film cameras and point and shoot digital cameras and 25 years of camcorders none of which were HD. I started my Lumix journey with a G7 I watched every video I could and bought the camera and kit lens along with the 45-200 Lumix lens. I also purchased a ZS50 pocket camera loving the 30x zoom, took so many photos with this little camera. The G7 allowed me to do lots of interviews and product videos. Next purchase was G5 wanting to have 120fps and more video capabilities and IBIS. G5 is my primary camera now. ZS50 went screwy and bought a ZS70 open box and a GX85 open box. The GX85 only came with the kit lens but I only paid $200 US. I love the Lumix products. Added 12-50 Oly with macro capability and the Lumix 25mm 1.7. I also have the f9 9mm fisheye from Olympus. The GX85 is my street photography camera, I am also amazed by the video quality. BTW I got a 2Ti from my mother-in-law. Glad I didn't invest in DSLR cameras. I record separate sound for most projects using my Zoom H6. Happy Shooting and thanks for sharing.

    Hi Shaun - try this for AF - set your frame rate and then shutter to 180 degrees plus one higher - ie use say 25p set shutter to 1/60 or 50p 1/125 or 60p 1/150 - shoot in CineLike D as this gives more equal contrast . Contrast and as Panasonic is contrast based makes a difference - If your vlogging register your face - also Panys will default to the background so you can also learn to use back button focus
    Also if you use an external monitor don’t use AF - this is mentioned in the manual that AF will be unreliable when using an external monitor

    Nice vid. The size and being able to charge via USB were massive for me, I actually sold me GH5 as it exceeded my needs and picked up a GX85 cheap on the used market. I do miss the 10-bit 4:2:2 of the GH5 for heavier grading, but for 98% the GX85 with the Cine-D hack is great. The lack of mic jack though, what a miss there by Panasonic. I can forgive the terrible continuous AF, but having to sync audio with secondary audio recorders is a serious drag.

      I got to play with a Sony A6400 recently and I can now say confidently that unless you really need a microphone jack and flip screen, the Lumix GX85 paired with a fast lens (F/2 or lower) is still the king of quality for the price!

    There is a mic hack for the gx80 there are 3 test pads that you can solder to. It doesn’t seem overly difficult but I haven’t done it yet myself. I am extremely tempted as I have been trying to record TimeCode to it using headphones placed close to the 2 internal mic ports without success.

  • @chainsov
    @chainsov 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Unfortunately, the gx9 isn't such an upgrade for 4K because of the severe 4k crop, but in 1080p, there is a hack on gx9 to enable 100mbit modes.
    My nitpick with the gx85 is that it doesn't do continuous autofocus while it's not recording, so if you use it for its clean hdmi, you basically have no autofocus unless you also record to an sd-card.

    I want to teach videography and use a good camera... The question is: 1.- Buying a GX85 very compact camera in a low price and record quality video with: "Atomos Ninja V" or: 2 .- Forget about the compactness of the Gx85 and go for a more expensive and newer camera like the GH6 camera and not use the "Atomos Ninja V". it is an easy or difficult choice, for a person as experienced as you?

    • @ShaunYeoh
      @ShaunYeoh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is sound from the built in microphone, but the audio quality isn't great from it. Usually, videographers use external microphones, but since there is no microphone jack, it means that an external recorder needs to be used along with the GX85.

    Great video mate! I sold my Sony a7iii to move to micro four thirds systems. It amazes me the size difference between the full frame and micro four thirds lenses. I have a Leica 8-18, 20mm f1.7 and the 14-140 and all those lenses together are smaller than my Sony GM 16-35 f2.8, it’s amazing! Plus, my 14-140 has stabilisation.. I was thinking about buying the new Sony a7siii, but after thinking too much, I think the Sony a7siii is not worth the amount of money I would have to spend with the camera and the full frame lenses + the size. I also do travel videos and for me it’s extremely important to stay lightweight as it’s easier to film and pay less in airplanes tickets. I’ll likely buy a g9 for the 4K 60 and the microphone jacket and have my gx85 as my b camera.

I'm actually interested in this camera and is searching for used deals to have a sense of the typical prices of used gx85 in Malaysia, but they seem to be quite rare, are there any FB groups or other sites that you can recommend to try to find them, please do accept my thanks in advance.

    • @ShaunYeoh
      @ShaunYeoh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, they seem to be quite rare now. A few months ago, I’ve been seeing them for under RM1.5K which is a great price, but not so much lately. I usually use Carousell and FB Marketplace and follow a few camera stores in Malaysia. I think GX9s can be found for sub RM2K which is a bit more, but is probably worth the premium for the better sensor and a few extra features. Might want to consider that too!

      I have the gx80 with the standard kit lens 12-32 which is excellent. I recently purchased the lumix 35-100 f4-f5.6. It’s small and lightweight and produces very sharp images. If you are looking for a prime the Olympus 17mm f1.8 is a great ‘all rounder’.

    I have the gx85 and love it but I have to say the Canon M50 is a real contender on a budget if you don't need 4K or if you can work around the 4K crop. You lose IBIS but there is video digital stabilization, selfie screen, insanely good continuous AF, mic input and with an EF adapter tons of affordable lenses. Love the video.

  • @sdhute
    @sdhute 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the gx85 could even be better then the Panasonic g100 that just came out. Especially since it has IBIS. the lens selection and price is good for micro four thirds. I think the g8 has a mic jack? The g85 is a good option too without 4K cropping.

    • @ShaunYeoh
      @ShaunYeoh  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve H I share the same opinion that the GX85 is much better than the G100 because of how much IBIS has played a role in my work flow. The G100 doesn’t really bring much to the table that the G7 or GX8 can’t do. You are correct that the GX8 has a microphone jack and the G85 is a great value deal because of all it can do. For the price that the G100 retails at, it’s worth topping up a little more for a used G95 or G9 if size isn’t an issue.

    I have this camera and shot some video clips with 8bit 100 mbps 4k. I had to use the GX85 due to the small from factor and budget.
    Now I need to use those video clips as background and green screen people in the foreground. I am considering getting a camera that can shoot 4k 10bit 200 mbps.
    I am still thinking if it is doable.

    • @ShaunYeoh
      @ShaunYeoh  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a Lumix G9 or GH5 with 10-bit would do great for that because you’d definitely want to grade your clips to match the green screen’ed subjects as close as you can. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible to grade with the GX85 (far from it), but 10-bit should definitely help your workflow!

    Your face was going out of focus every few seconds for the entire time that you were talking. It was kind of distracting. I'm surprised that you call continuous auto focus "the elephant in the room" but still went ahead and let it affect your video like that. I have GX85 also.
