Surprised you didn't mention the retcon of Wanda and Quicksliver NOT being mutants that happened years later and how it seems Marvel may in fact be reversing course on that in reestablishing them as Mutants in a Pax Krakoa Marvel Universe. Kurt Busiek came up with by far the best definition of her power, as Chaos Magic (ancient magic connected to emotions) gifted to her at birth by the Elder God Chthon. Chaos Magic works as a concept, and it gives Wanda her own narrative arc. "Reality warping because accident of birth/genes " is stupid and adds nothing to Wanda as a character, it leaves her as a static character with no potential for growth.
Steve Englehart and Kurt Busiek pushed her towards being an actual Witch, and this led to immense character growth for her. Byrne and Bendis turned her into an OP plot device with no skill or nuance, and that led to her being pretty much ruined forever in comics.

Avengers disassembled is the comic series that made marvel fans aware that Bendis should not trusted with the main continuity, because he'll disregard it and do whatever he pleases leaving it to the next writer to fix. dc fans found out the hard way what Marvel fans went through during the early to mid 2000s with his Superman run.
Bendis does his best work when he's not confined to previously established continuity there's a reason his Ultimate Spider-Man run is so good because he didn't have to worry about that pre-established lore of Earth 616. I will admit Bendis Batman Universe miniseries is really good because it wasn't constrained by continuity.

"There's no such thing as chaos magic", says an astonishingly stupid Doctor Strange, except of course that Chthon (who would later call Strange out on his BS) and Shuma Gorath are literally made of the stuff, and that Chthon gave Wanda a fraction of his soul so she could use it. Of course, Chthon, Wanda's arch enemy, never shows up in House of M, because by pure lucky coincidence he apparently went on vacation with his brother Set. Also, Wanda conveniently didn't bring back any of the characters Bendis was not interested in, like Vision, Agatha Harkness, Scott Lang, Wanda's mother does not even get a mention, while the father who actually raised her, Django, who gave his life to save her from Chthon, is absent as well. Bendis erases Wanda's history and backstory to turn her into a D-list satellite of Magneto. Bendis focused on his favourites, such as Wolverine, Spiderman, Luke Cage, none of whom have anything to do with Scarlet Witch, who barely even appears in the story, and has no character arc.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Marvel post-2005, but I think it's plain that understanding this story is important for understanding the comics of today. Disassembled was more about Bendis hating the classic Avengers and wanting to replace them with A-listers and his faves. His character assassination of Wanda was utterly cynical and deliberately designed to make her unusable, leading to her disappearing from comics for 7 years. Quesada wanted to reduce the number of mutants after he felt Grant Morrison had made too many. So they approached that issue in the most petty, spiteful, and short-sighted way imaginable, by using a character they wanted rid of to rid them of characters they did not want. Scorched Earth, basically. It's very, very clear that Marvel Editorial hates Wanda and there is a huge gulf between Marvel Comics (which wants to ignore her and kill her off) and Marvel Studios (which wants to push her as a female hero) on Scarlet Witch.

Bendis is the biggest one-hit wonder in all comics, making a modern classic in Ultimate Spider-Man. Then for every comic he does afterwards he just ignores any previous contiunuity, characterisation or previous events just to make his stories work. His writing is filled with the most obnoxious of dialogue and entire filler pages because he's either too uncreative or too lazy to write something engaging. His writing only works when he gets a story alt-universe story so he can have his own sigular story without ruining what came before like he did with his moronic desicions in his Superman run.

Thank God, that Hickman made mutants their House of X. It's practically a "Mutant Heaven" (won't call it Utopia, because last time it didn't work out for them). I love the fact that even old greatest X-Villains like Apocalypse and Mr. Sinister are welcome their and are practically heroes in new X-series.
After all those "Ages of..." and "Houses of ..." mutants are being fine.
Especially awesome is the that the mutants who died years ago or lost their powers after House of M are back (Banshee, Wind Dancer, Wither) I just hope they would somehow bring back Jimmy Hudson (Wolverine's son from Ultimate Universe), because he's awesome and Marvel practically abandoned him after he was infected with Poison in X-Men Blue.

CinemaSins-previously on Wanda Vision, what’s WandaVision? oh it's just a six-hour TV show that you need to have watched, so you can fully appreciate what's happening in this movie. well, it's about making it completely redundant.
Th3Birdman- that was a lot of BS in a lot of words. This is not one of those instances where you can "books don't matter" this away. the MCU is interconnected, and they have established that fact over the past 14 years, at this point an entire child was born and is now entering High School in the span of time from the first Iron Man movie till now. if you are missing MCU shows and films for one reason or another, you cannot blame anyone but yourself for being lost if you then attempt to jump back in at a later point, and WandaVision was not made redundant by this film it set up Infinity gem-less Vision, Agatha Harkness, Spectrum and the Darkhold.
Wanda-I made mistakes and people were hurt.
CinemaSins- all true but the main thing is that you've learned from those mistakes on a ready to move on. there's no way this movie would undo an entire season of character growth in 90 minutes, right?
TH3Birdman- right again, you've missed the point. Wanda is under the influence of the Darkhold. I mean it's in the name the Darkhold. That’s one of the major plot points of this film that whoever uses the Darkhold will be corrupted in some way. The very end of WandaVision shows her using the Darkhold.

Great video! It's so interesting to think that this one event did so much for the Marvel universe and the mutants themselves. On one hand the mutant era it ushered in was such a weird one for story-telling with the loss of the minority metaphor often associated with the mutants. On the other hand, it is because of this weird era it created, that we were given the current Hickman-led era of mutant stories that has been some of the best x-stories in a long time. From the outside looking in, I see why they went this path but still thought some of it could've been avoided. Looking at it in an in-universe lens, they made the story work and were able to adapt following its conclusion. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Owen. I always look forward to when you have a new video drop!

House of M was great, but can we finally acknowledge how inconsistent The Decimation was? First they said that only 198 mutants still had their powers, then they said that was only in America. Iceman lost his powers, until they revealed that he was just faking it. Wanda said no more mutants taking away the powers of mutants throughout the multiverse, and then they pretended that never really happened. Some mutants and people weren't in the House of M reality, even though they clarified that the House of M reality had encompassed everybody on earth. At the end of AvX all mutants got their powers back, wait, no some mutants did not have their powers returned. So confusing!!!!

House of M is evem still relevant in the Hickman X-Men era. Wanda is basically is a antichrist scapegoat figure on Krakoa, and the decimation event is one of the most significant actions against mutantkind that compelled Xavier and Magneto to participate in Moira's agenda. (Although it kinda doesn't make sense why they'd hate Wanda when she can just remake a House of M reality since that's basically what Krakoa is trying to accomplish now).

House of M definitely feels like a pivot point, both creatively and business wise. I dont think it can be really discussed without talking about the Fox Xmen movies and the change in Marvel's business going forward. Both in trimming a lot of the post 90s Xmen glut but also shrinking their exposure in Marvel when their relationship with Fox got contentious. But either way, its probably the clearest point of delineation between comics and style I remembered as a kid, and those I read in late high-school.

That Wednesday I secured my copy and called in to work...like an idiot. Wow, what a letdown that was. The watercooler chat about this series cratered at our local shop. It was overhyped and under-delivering...repeatedly. The only thing worse in comics, I think, than death-stunting is resurrection-stunting. I try time and again to return to the stories and I find I liked so many of the spin-offs better.

If you want to say so, dude but for X-men readers HOM and the Decimation was Quesada and Bendis wrecking a franchise to bring back their childhoods for the 60's and 70''s sent the x-men down nearly a Decade of mostly crap stories. I dropped everything except X-factor and later picked up the trades of New X-men. X-force was decent enough writing wise but wasn't my taste. Messiah Complex and Necrosha being interesting crossover. I peace-ed out of marvel after the Vampire vs X-men story arc. Kept an ear to the ground only came back in early 2020 after watching a few Rob reviews of Dawn of X-/Powers of X .

I doubt it as the MCU is going in a different direction to the comics. As Wanda's only substantive appearance post-HoM was James Robinson's 2015 solo, there is a lack of source material for Marvel Studios to mine, so they are likely opting to go in a brand new direction. Wanda being in Doctor Strange pretty much confirms we are getting a Kurt Busiek flavoured Chaos Magic (the only convincing explanation of her powers there has ever been) wielding Witch. Note that Feige stated Wanda is a Witch. He likes to keep things simple and not confuse audiences.
It's notable that Marvel comics, which opposed Wanda being in the MCU and banned her from comics for 7 years, released no tie-ins for WandaVision, in contrast to every other MCU release, and that Wanda has received no push in comics during her presence in the MCU. With the exception of Jim Zub, none of Marvel's writers are interested in her as anything other than a punching bag or plot device.

There's also the theory that the no more mutants aspect was kind of a fuck you to Fox Studios. The X Men movies were doing gangbusters and Marvel didn't want to keep giving them free publicity.
So they were trying to reduce the mutants involvement in the Marvel comic universe. And it was around the same time that Marvel got back the rights to some of their characters for movies and wanted to focus the comics on those.
Iron Man began scripting in the same year as House of M and also explains why he was such a pivitol part of Civil War.

Ok this is going to take a minute and I think this is a good place to ask this. I grew up in the 80s mostly on DC because of COIE which I loved. I didn't get into Marvel until later in college and dipped out in the mid 90s. I like the MCU and in the last couple years I've been catching up with the comics, and am really disliking Bendis. House of M was so dirty in so many ways..
One of the reasons I like the MCU is that the storylines are from runs I know from back in the day, and they made a lot of bad runs into good or at least decent movies. I'm still 11 years old when I get to see great action scenes with real movie stars instead of Superman III & Howard the Duck, I still can't believe they made Hawkeye, Captain America and Vision look not just good but cool. But now that they're doing Carol Danvers & House of M I don't know what to make of this. These runs, finding out about them now were toxic. There's always going to be writers that don't care to know the continuity of the characters they're writing, it's comics but how do you let someone destroy mutants and the X-Men? And it is an absolute character assassination of Scarlet Witch, if someone hates mutants don't have him write X-Men. And especially don't kill your biggest asset because you don't like the studio that has the film rights, I am just catching up here and it's absolutely astonishing what has happened to the industry.
So is it inevitable now that the MCU goes All New All Different? I don't know..

I hated House of M when it happened, bc like you said, it kick-started crossover events. I was a big fan of that Avengers run and they just suddenly cut it short with dangling plot lines to lead into the event and then soft rebooting.
It's what started my declining interest in superhero comics. As any time I got invested in a single series there was the likely event a new crossover story would happen and at best pause or at worst completely end whatever stories were going on.
And this would keep happening over and over with basically annual events that required every series to be involved. Like how Civil War basically ended that Spiderman run by making him reveal his identity to the world.
But at least House of M and Civil War were generally interesting events I did enjoy conceptually. They did build Wanda's faltering mental state for awhile in Avengers and Civil War was kind of brewing for like a decade in Marvel in general and felt relevant in a post 9-11 American paranoia. So I kept going.
But I really called it quits when one of my favorite runs of the time, the really great and underappreciated meta She Hulk story as a multi dimensional lawyer, got ended by Secret Invasion.
I couldn't care less about Secret Invasion, it felt so artificially inserted, that it became extremely apparent to me that investing in any one series and writer would just be ended by an editorially mandated world event.

Great video as always Owen. I wonder about the long term ramifications regarding both the comics and the MCU. The issues that Marvel and Fox had over the film rights caused a larger rift than us true fans wanted in the publications. It obviously didn’t work out on either page nor screen. Inhumans was a bust and I believe that Pietro and Wanda have been retconned out of Magneto’s family tree in both print and film. I believe that whatever is about to happen with the cinematic “multiverse” will be the closest we get to source material continuity. In Feige we trust. God Bless Marvel.

Besides being the cause, Wanda had a very small role in that storyline.
The context of that story had much more to do with the other heroes having to come to grips with being given everything they’ve ever wanted only to have to sacrifice their greatest wishes for the sake of the world.

It's almost like, when you get to be lazy and don't have to think of an origin, you tend to create way too many characters who are inevitably insanely OP and have to find a way to wipe out a lot of them in one go just so your universe can breathe. I have NEVER been an X-men fan, and I never will be. I'm glad they aren't part of the MCU and honestly hope they never show up, but I know they will.
Something has to eventually de-rail the MCU, might as well let it be mutants, it's all they're good for.
