Been watching him since nearly the beginning. Always a good video, but it’s even better now that he has his dog. As a dog lover I think everything’s better with a dog.
You had two pair of skis. Cut the front ends off the other set, make a cross beam for them. Put cross beam under front of sled with a pivot point. Shorten back set of skis and leave them straight. Harness goes on both side of cross beam. If dog goes left, it should pull the right line and make the front set turn to the left. As dog straightens, tension on left should pull left side a bit back towards cent making sled go straight.
Good boy, Kauiper! Protecting daddy from those evil clumps of snow. 😂 You are a big ol darling.🐾 Thanks for the awesome Saturday cartoons ...er...video, Ryan. Always fun. 👍🇨🇦😎❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
That is the funniest video I’ve seen in a very long time. Your dog is an absolute scream. You’re trying to get stuff done and he has other ideas. I will have to watch this one again.
Ryan, attaching the pulling eyelets to the tip of the skis will help the steering. The only other way is to shorten the length of the skis. But if you shorten them too much you will lose float in deep snow. I know from experience, my father & I built a sledge like this in the 70s but made our own runners (using 3 layers of 1/4" steamed marine pywood with formica glued on as the underside) as didn't have any skis. We used cascamite wood glue and I still have the sledge 50 years later. It was incredibly fast on powder snow but I had to cut the length of the runners as it was resistent to cornering. And totally lethal and unsteerable on ice (no matter how long/short the runners). Alternative would be to make another using some shorter/fatter skis. Regards from Scotland.
Another thought for steering: make the loop that attaches to the sled one piece (not two pieces tied together) and attach the harness to it with a ring or carabiner. As the sled deviates from Kuiper’s path, the ring will slide towards the side closest to your path and will exert some sideways force, hopefully bringing the sled back towards your path.
That's just so awesome amazing and majestic to have your dog running through the woods with you riding along at 25mph, it just looks so natural for him, like how wolves run down faster prey, you got think he is imaging that while he's running! But u may have to add solid stabilization bars from the sled to kuipper harness, would also prevent sled from hitting him when he stops suddenly while running 20 mph, you could just put some really flexible pvc tube over the rope connected to harness, tie easy hitch knots to hold pvc in place, but leave some of rope connected to him with no pvc pipe, just long enough that when he stops the sled also stops around 6 inches short behind him, so you still have part rope with slack ,if iam explaining that well enough, you can figure it out lol
Maybe try straight poles from the harness to the sled. That might take the weight off the front of the ski’s so it would track better. When my daughter and Setters were young I made similar with cross country ski’s and a folding chair tons of fun and great memories
Since you have an extra pair of skis, you could cut all of them in half and make the front pair swivel. Also, you can add a flap, which will "fall" down as soon as there is no tension on the pulling line, that way the sled would slow itself down as soon as it gets faster than Kuiper. Do what you want, have fun :)
Also, dog sleds are extremely flexible by design, which assists in turning. You might try either bag balm or vaseline on Kuiper's feet to prevent built up ice globs. I love seeing him run, reminds me of my Leonberger.
Attach two point from, harness to tip of each ski to guide the turns better. Maybe poles to help with braking or a levered brake with spring to unbrake when you stop pulling on it?
Maybe a third ski, on a pivot and attached to both traces so when Keiper goes left or right it points the steering ski in that direction. And maybe some sort of spring-loaded brake system that comes on when there is no load on the traces, like when it picks up speed downhill, the break comes on when the trace goes slack.
Long sleds are notorious for not steering well, Ryan. Maybe you can convert it to a bobsled. They steer well. Bundle up and stay warm. Maybe it's time for a wood stove? Cheers from east coast Canada.
I made something similar and had to attach the rope to the ski tips. This allowed me to pull the sled up over deeper snow and control the steering a bit better. When I had the rope attached to the sled the skis would sink in deep snow and the sled would get hung-up.
Cross country skiiis usually have grippy wax on them so you can walk or stride better. You should wax them with snowboard or downhill wax for less resistance
Dog having fun and that's the main thing, but please get rid of the skies and just have wooden runners under a longer sled before Ruby gets injured. On a sadder note I just lost my 9 year old Bernese also named Ruby last month, Burners are great, but their stubborn, troublemaker reputations are well-earned. 😋
@marianfrances4959 Not far south (the way the crow flies) from the border here. We were supposedly forecast to get up to 22" of snow. I don't think a half inch fell lol. Storm must've split or just missed us. I'm in a weird micro climate where it dumps when we're only supposed to get dusted and we get hardly any when it's supposed to dump hahaha
For short term put a tarp over the seat and engine area. Then when you can mill some wood and make a roof for the mini excavator like what you have for the 4 wheeler to keep the weather off . What about the platform That's high up you could park the mini excavator underneath it that would help some. You could close that in that way the mini excavator would have a little shelter to keep it in good shape. It might be a good idea to lubricant all moving parts and grease gun with a good grade of grease it's best to grease it before every time you use it to make it last longer before parts wears out and you can't over grease it most likely it's made for the cheapest parts
With all of the battery problems in the freezing temperatures you may want to consider getting some 120v marketplace tools to use on those extremely cold days.
Very good suggestion! I use a sled for winter backpacking sometimes and I use an x--I have line running through a 10 foot piece of I believe 1/2 inch pvc pipe. I cut the pipe in half so that each piece is 5 feet long.
A conventional dogsled has a little positive rocker on the runners and is steered and braked by the musher using weight shift and twisting on a vertical frame at the rear for steering, and boot drag or stepping on a brake blade to slow down and stop. A one dog sled requires draw bars like a horse drawn cart, so that Kuiper can provide his own steering and braking. Your cross country skis have an unfortunate negative rocker for sled use, making them too directionally stable. I suspect that they may steer well enough using draw bars or you may need to abandon the skis and make wooden runners with a little positive rocker. Another option is to stick with a flexible draw strap, but add another strap at the rear for you to run along behind and assist with steering and braking. You can also come by to assist with pulling on steep climbs
Those kinds of sleds, the box would have a bottom more like a toboggan than a joist, so if the snow was too powdered to support the load on the skis, it then had the entire bottom to support the load as the skis sunk in. And look at examples of horse carriage hitches for the hitch. A dog sled hitch system relies on the operator being on the back providing the "brakes". Horse sleds were designed more for the horse to apply pull and stopping force, though even the sleds had brakes.
Outstanding job on the sled! Pardon an old man's memory, but the design looks just like a "???? Flyer" that I had as a kid. Mine worked great in the Upstate NY snow, so I'm guessing yours will work with one dog power in your snow.
You know, when you run him on the quad and he gets ahead and you take a turn, that would be a great time to use some sort of left and right command. Just before he gets to the turn, you start saying the direction (Right! Gee! Starboard! Anti-Left!) and keep saying whatever you use as you go through the turn. Keiper would pick it up pretty fast, just from repetition.
Take the black straps one on each side of the sled get rid of the orange rope all together. One other thing is "pigeon toe" the skis. I made a sleigh for the kids with skis good idea if I say so my self!
You could get some EMT aka thin wall conduit or maybe better yet some schedule 40 (grey) pvc conduit and put a curve on the leading edge. A heat source even a small fire could heat the pvc pipe, or a conduit bender for either 1/2" or 3/4" emt could make the candy cane shape, think of Santa's sleigh. Sorry for all the suggestions but it is driving me crazy.
With your seamstress knowhow, make yourself some hand warmer (hot hands) pocket wrap thingys for your batteries. Maybe so two sides can take a hand warmer. Slides over and cuffs your battery. Just a thought. I use hand warmers for my camera for shooting milkyway and aurora photography.
I once built a very similar sled Which I pulled with snowshoes. To avoid being run over by the sled downhill I ran the tow ropes through pieces of plastic pipe So the sled ends up pushing You, not running you over. I can't remember what I tied the ropes to on the sled But I think I put small eye bolts right at the very tips of the skis, I think that might give better steering but at least it keeps the ropes from being run over by the sled.
You might want to make a pivoting assembly for the skis so you're not constantly trying to steer the unit. I supposed I'm suggesting that emulating wearing the skis might help, althougn tilting the lateral plane like your ankles would do might be kinda tricky. Keeping the entire unit weight to a minimum using wet lumber might be a little challenging. You do have the time to spend on it, so; get to it dude lol.
I still think you ordered a leaf. Put a 2 before sticking out our 2 tube of 4 sticking out in front of that about 4 foot. Put you a 2 before our wider board. That's a front of your sled, put your 2 little skid, they don't have to be as wide as your 2 backskins, but they have to be at least to the inside of each skip each No, and it can't touch the ones in the back. That way, when you turn the front one, the back ones are gonna follow it, and wherever the dog goes. That flat is gonna go, because there's two front skids will make that fled.Go where you want it to.All you have to have is one bolt going one big boat going down through the top board and then mount the skidge to that board. That's the steve to that board on each side with making them narrower than the skies on the on the back. Then they gotta be a little bit further forward than the skis on the front, because they can't touch
Love the idea of the sled. I had a thought about your downhill run away sled issue. Can you fashion a spring-loaded brake? One or two pieces of lumber mounted on a pivot that when Kieper is not pulling the spring causes them to Plow into the ground / snow? The steering is another issue that will be tricky to solve unless you create another pivot point for the front runners / ski's. I am thinking about a snowmobile type of setup.
Ryan try running a board with one scared those other two skis in the front run a board all the way underneath and tack it all the way on everyone underneath put your bolts in the two front ones hook your ropes to the two skis on the front as he pulls that those two skis Baller him wherever he goesand that way it will automatically go the direction that the dog goes
@ 37:33 you for sure need some sort of wood stove as a backup to the propane / even a Cubic Mini ( so as not to lose space ) would at least supplement the propane in the extremes / the plus is all the wood scraps you have could save you !
With my sled, I ski with. That I pull. It has 2 crossing poles. This keeps the sled the same distance away, and on a human, when you turn your hips, it turns the sled. You could put pvc over the rope to make it more ridgid.
Zero snow experience here bit wondering if you push/steer the sled with a handle and dangle a treat in front of Kuiper to keep him going/direct him. Or work on commands for left and right
Instead of the line attaching to 2 points on the sled, what if you made a thin board front rudder with a pivot point where it hooks onto the sled and attached just the one line on the front of it? That way, whichever way the dog goes, the sled goes. You could also have a spring loaded brake on the front of the rudder that the line attaches to so, when it is pulled, the brake is up, but when there is slack, the spring pulls the brake down.
Skijoiring sorry spelling but look at those we run traditional sleds in Canada 🇨🇦 lol o some sort of foot break/ anchor so he doesn’t take off on you ❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉
@ 37:09 It looks like the best solution is to attach the pull mechanism to the very tips of skis if possible / should solve all steering and tracking issues ???
I work in West Texas in the oilfield and have recently discovered a new breakfast recipe for your old stale tortilla chips. It's called Huevos Con Migas (translated eggs with crumbs). Basically make scrambled eggs. Just before they harden up, throw a handful of crushed Tortilla chips and some salsa, pico or hot sauce (whatever you like). It's WONDERFUL. Try it.
Can't get over how powdery the snow is in most places. In California they call the snow in our Sierra mountains "Sierra cement". We could never just brush off snow. I am assuming our proximity to the Pacific Ocean causes it to have a lot more water content in it.
Even on a sled dog sled up north that the egg the people in northern Territories use, they have 2 leads. One on each side is sled. Were the dogs hooked with harnesses that go to both sides of the dog coming back to the sled? Your sled only has the center rope. Pulling the sled. You got to figure out something that's gonna guide that sled from both sides catch it to the front of the skis, put an outlet in both front of the skis and let him pull it in there and see if that works if you don't want to attach it through there with a Violet. Stick your little thin rope through a hole in it and see if that works. Try that first and see if it guides straight. But it needs to come from each side of his harness, not the middle of his harness, from both sides of his harness on the sides. That way, he's pulling both sides. The same distance at the same time. So they're going to go if he turns the one on the left of him. We'll pull it to the left. When he turns to the right, the one on the left on the right will turn to the left. Try that. But I guarantee you, that's going to work better than what you're doing anyway
Love your stuff man. Random thoughts. while you're running him with the atv have to ever tried "barking" sledding commands before you turn? I think he's a pretty smart dog. He just might pick up on it during one of his favorite activities to reinforce them.
Ryan, you may get some freight sled ideas from watching "The King of Obsolete"'s videos. Find one of his vids in which he is pulling the sleds with his Caterpillar crawlers. He calls them a "Cat Train"
you should buy this 18V ONE+ HEAT PEN PCL916B and modify or use it somehow in making a battery powered, battery warming box from wood to heat up your batteries out side when you need them, i guess 2 minutes would warm them up enough and you could heat quite a few at once
Ryan, if you look back at wagons and sleds of yesteryear, a solid pulling extension was employed. Hook Kuiper up to a single point that attaches like the tongue of a trailer with v stability points on the sides. It will help with directional steering. Great job building that sled. A little experimentation and you’ll be all set! Kuiper obviously loves it!

Ryan must have money because it looks like he has at least 100 acres. If only I were 50 years younger.
80 acres in Northern Michigan is certainly attainable for a n unmarried person.

Actually pretty cool little sleigh there. 🥸👍
I've heard good things about the new ryobi edge tabless batteries as far as bringing more power to the tools.
You're getting pretty good with that machine already, didn't even stomp the bucket flat.
So, I was pretty excited about the outdoor kitchen...
Sometimes life sends us in a different direction
I suspect he is selling things to learn what his back will take. Summer it might happen
Use like PVC rods on both sides in a v shape on the orange rope that will help guide it better and keep it from running into the back of kuiper
Pull from tip of skis. Pvc poles with ropes inside to the side of harness for braking.
Put eyelets on the tips of the skies run the webbing through them that should help the steering and keep the webbing from going under the skies
You need a solid connection from the sled to the dog, like a sled behind a snowmobile.
Try it.
Silicone spray works good to keep the cables from freezing
If there were attachment points in the tips of the skis it might take care of the "steering" issue without having to cant the skis.
Can't get over how powdery the snow is in most places. In California they call the snow in our Sierra mountains "Sierra cement". We could never just brush off snow. I am assuming our proximity to the Pacific Ocean causes it to have a lot more water content in it.
You need a miniature horse cart.
He calls them a "Cat Train"
another Saturday with the worm
you should buy this 18V ONE+ HEAT PEN PCL916B and modify or use it somehow in making a battery powered, battery warming box from wood to heat up your batteries out side when you need them, i guess 2 minutes would warm them up enough and you could heat quite a few at once
Kuiper is Sasquatch sighting for sure. Wax those skis ⛷️
Shorting your skis on the front of sled will help your steering.
Attach the rope closer to the tip of the skies for more steering control.
