  • There are two kinds of book pitches: 1) your long-form pitch that's magic in under a minute, and 2) the elevator pitch, which is over by the time the elevator gets to the next floor. Here's how to get to "Wow, I can't wait to read that book" in ten words or fewer. thebookdoctors.com

      Love it! What a great setting for a new version of the Odyssey! Have you been to the Kauai Writer's Conference? We've taught there for the past two years.

    Thanks in advance for your feedback. What could be better about this elevator pitch?
    "My book, the 'Grand Adventures of Gus Musculus & Friends', lies at about a 6.5 on a scale from 'Winnie the Pooh' to 'Lord of the Rings'."
    I use Brian Jacques ('Redwall') as a comp author in the longer pitch but give it more context if people don't know who he is, and I think it is too wordy for an elevator pitch: "Inspired by the many webbed, winged, and warm-blooded works of the late Brian Jacques, The Grand Adventures of Gus Musculus and Friends invites its readers to encounter bravery and imagination through the eyes of a small hero with a big name."

      You are using two of the greatest books written in modern history. Very, very tricky. And they are such different books, so you're not giving me any clue as to what scale you're speaking about. We'd rather you 1) not use these books, but 2) If you have to, then tell us specifically what you're inspired by in each. Hope that helps!

    Thank you guys again! Would you agree that a successful pitch is one that you can fit into a tweet? Or would you say it’s more only written as “x meets y” with good comparable titles/settings/themes? Also, what if there isn’t a very good comp title available besides one that is a bestseller such as the hunger games?

    • @TheBookDoctors
      @TheBookDoctors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We'll start with the last question first. When people tell us there are no good comp titles, we are usually skeptical. Comp titles do not have to be actually competitive books. They can have a similar voice, a similar plot, a similar setting or any number of other similarities. So think a little wider. A good elevator pitch doesn't have to fit into a tweet, but should be pretty close.

      The Book Doctors thank you guys! Can you use three comp titles rather than two?

    • @TheBookDoctors
      @TheBookDoctors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but be sure not to confuse people. That can defeat the whole purpose of the elevator pitch!

    Who has suggestions for pitch and hook with only 10 minutes to get your story to the agent? Doing my first one at a writers conference and could use some advice - thanks!

      We have an entire video on pitching at writer's conferences. Pls take a look because what we say is counterintuitive.

    I heard from an agent that it's best to not use comp titles in a pitch that are more than five years old. What do you think about that advice?

    • @TheBookDoctors
      @TheBookDoctors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally, that's true. It's partly because it doesn't show your knowledge of the current publishing market. But sometimes it just makes sense. We called our book The What To Expect When You're Expecting of publishing. This was years after that book was published. But people just got what we were doing immediately.

    How's this: "Lord Audric and the Throne of Fire is a near future, cautionary, 'what if' fable in which animals rise up and enslave what's left of mankind after a series of wars and ecological disasters have nearly destroyed the planet."

    • @TheBookDoctors
      @TheBookDoctors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We really like "animals rise up and enslave what's left of mankind after a series of wars and ecological disasters have nearly destroyed the planet." But what's surrounding that feels a little generic . Also, you have three descriptors of your fable, which is a big mouthful for an elevator pitch. You're close!
