- After a good number of extremely tough days, and having had about 24 hours to take a breather for a little bit, you can feel a new spirit spreading through the fleet. As we are nearing the halfway station of the race. There is still much to come, there is still the thoughest piece to come, but much has been achieved and today is a moment of some pride and joyfull reflection it seems for the skippers.
Make sure to bring coffee! Because Seawolves is back again!
Thank you all very much for watching, liking and sharing my previous Vendee reports!. and for supporting the channel over the last 4 years.I hope you will enjoy my insights and opinions (I'm not claiming to be an expert, just an interested sailor and fellow tech nerd, who likes to explore these fascinating machines.

Make sure to leave your questions for the Q&A show on Monday!
In the last day we hear blackouts in the boat with electronic things. They have for the worst case, alternativ methods? as exemple in the golden Globe race, they navigate , only with sextant. Is this also possible with this racemaschines?
Thank you for answer🎉
Boris Herrman, Jean Le Cam and Pip Hare are the most possitive and funniest participants to follow.
Sam Goodchild is comming up.
I would put Conrad on that list as well.
The top three channels of sailing that I love to watch were just on the show. Glad you highlighted Arctic and Erik.
Wow The epoxy fumes down below on Pips boat would be pretty overwhelming. Dangerous stuff. Maybe the huge smile was from being high on epoxy. She is an inspiration that woman.
And leading the fleet with 494 miles in 24h too!
Epoxy resin doesn’t emit a lot of fumes. Much less than polyester resin.
problem with epoxy is that you don,t smell the fumes , what i don,t get that they didn,t supply the sailers with `proper carbon filter masks to use in these repairs in closed spaces , also with a structural crack like this I doubt if some uplayed sheets/mats with resin can hold the structure together in a solid enough way
Thank you once again for your high quality show - it motivates me to take up sailing again! 💙🌊
Awesome to see Pip, Conrad and Boris in good cheer. What a difference a few days can make!
Another fantastic show, Florian! Love hearing from the skippers, and it was so cool to hear your experience with drones. And thanks for mentioning Erik Aanderaa; I’ll check him out.
Great to see Juho from Alluring Arctic - their channel is the best!
About catching drones: There is an excellent clip from Malizia taken during the Ocean Race. Love your show!!!
Great Update once again. Each night I feel part of it all
Great update! Thank you, Florian!
Gotta love Pip’s attitude after a month! Seems few of the boats have much of a media team/effort? You have nailed the top half dozen….perhaps some of the older salts should talk to Cole Brauer’s media team! Thanks, oh…lost my drone overboard, opting not to replace! Andrew
Thanks again for a great update !!!
I lost a drone while fishing out of a boat ... much easier situation than a sailing boat but still not much room for error in windy condition. As always, thanks a lot for your show.
Thanks for update!
Thanks for changing to the blue 'position' displays when doing tech analysis. Much easier to follow.
Hi Florian, the question about heaters installed in the boats comes from time to time. Around a quarter of the boats are equipped with heaters, you can read it in the news article "The ZEA Slalom and dealing with the cold" from 07.12.24 on the vendee globe website
Thank you for the show!!!
Pip doing 30 kts!! woow! ..cant believe she didnt show us the wake!
Probably too excited and forgot!
Way to go PIP!!!
...look for 'Day 17 - Leg 3 - The Ocean Race - Epic Drone Shots' near the end where Antoine catches the drone.
it seems to me from the cockpit interviews, while the boats are moving fast, that the newest versions of the foils are much quieter,
which also makes less drag
I recall one of the skippers (forget who) mentioned something about modifying the edge of the foils on his/her yacht which had the effect of reducing noise. Foil evolution is moving fast. In a few more editions of the VG we will be seeing foil technology with higher performance and much less of the downsides of the original foil designs. When T-foil rudders are eventually allowed it will be even better.
Epoxy resin and hardener (and the mix) have no or very little smell. Do not confuse it with polyester which out-gasses styrol fumes like crazy.
Hi, have been enjoying the Vendee coverage. It's turned into evening tradition at our house to watch your updates.
About the drone landing technology, perhaps drone manufacturers could take some ideas from the dynamic positioning industry. Particularly one of the relative position reference systems called Fanbeam. It reflects a laser off a reflective beacon to meaure range and bearing. It could track a reflector on the boat and maintain position relative to the boat instead of the absolute position that GPS provides. May need to be re-engineered smaller for a drone, but seems like it should be possible.
AHOY, CAPT FLORIAN, LAKE SAILER SEAWOLF IN ATLANTA HERE, ANOTHER FIRST CLASS UPDATE, THANKS FOR THAT,. I LOOK FORWARD TO YOU BECOMING A COMMENTATOR ON LOUIS VITTON COVERAGE SOMEDAY!!!
I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING "ALLURING ARTIC" FOR A WHILE....GREAT DRONE CLIP!
AT LEAST HE COULD CIRCLE BACK AROUND "M.O.B."😊..GOT TO ASK, IN YOUR INTRO, WHAT IS THAT YOUR POURING THE HOT WATER IN TO...CORN?....CHEERS!
could you use a sail as a big net?
if one can make the drone stall vertically prior to impact with mainsail, drone could be captured in mainsail boom bag perhaps
For catching a drone have a look at the "Safehaven Marine" videos, they stretch out a large net and fly the dron into it. The manage it repeatedly in huge seas
Q. Pip spoke about the Australia search and rescue zone. Is the Antarctic exclusion zone based on more than just ice?
23:11 Hi, what is the name of the program that you have been using for the last few days for the tactical analysis? Thank you very much for your very good and understandable show
Thanks for update! Missing more news from Charlie Dalin and Jeremie Beyou, Boris Herrmann sailing team update is great, but sadly leader doesn't share news so much.....
I'm no drone expert but i noticed that racing drones use crash nets to catch the drones at the end of races at full speed. so to me a bright circle target about 3 ft across with crash nets that you just fly into at full speed would be the easiest way to catch a drone on a moving boat.
I would think strong magnets would be a great use in this case. I know there are very strong ones that could be used to catch the drone.
O happy days!
QUESTION #2 - Do the captains wear a kind of device or anything which will tell the boat’s autopilot to steer into the wind to stop the boat or to send a signal to call for help for the case if they fall overboard? I know that they connect themselves with tether once in while but quite obviously they are not connected all the time walking the on the deck.
They need a special icon with a single foil. 😥
If the landing stick has a very strong magnet the drone could dangle it's own magnet and if it came anywhere near the two magnets would lock together and then the drone powers down the rotors leaving the drone dangling ready for retrieval. Or you just have a box at the back of the boat for the drone to fly into.
Thats what I was thinking about, but the Magnetismus might influence the electronics badly
What are the numbers on the outriggers of the boats used for?
How about have a 2nd GPS module/receiver in the cockpit and its GPS coordinates relayed to the drone every 1/4 second, and then some software script to put the drone on a path to inch toward a position x meters behind/above the 2nd module.
I was thinking the same thing about drones, I’m pretty sure the military have already sorted it out
QUESTION #1 - How do the Caiptains steer if the autopilots fail? I haven’t seen a helm or anything in all the videos yet. Thanks!!!
@Florian. Why is Cape Leeuwin a “ cape” recognised in the race, but point 43°38 36 S, 146°4938'E off the tip of Tasmania is not a recognised Cape ?
„Cape“ belongs to Continent, Tasmania is an island
I am sure SpaceX has a solution for your drone capture concept. Also, less complicated (and less elegant) might be a crash landing net type system.
Maybe an electric magnet on the end of the stick? You'd have to make sure the it's not overly powerful to harm/impact the electronics in the drone.
Such a stressful drone story!!
Does Szabolcs Weores have enough food on board to complete the race?
In what time zone do the skippers and their land-based teams communicate?
I think a solution with a magnet for the drone would be great
cu and thanks ! :)
Creat segment on drone handling at sea.
How far are the leaders ahead of the record?
Gidday Florian, can we hear a little more about the ice exclusion zone, maybe how strict are the rules? Question from South Australia.
will do
will have acup of chocolademelk….
Magnetic pole with landing pad???
The amount of force it took to crack that 3 inch thick CF bulkhead, I hate to say, but that surface patch isn't going to do anything significant. She would need large stainless steel plates bolted through and epoxied on both sides to stop the movement. Hopefully it won't get any worse.
A drone catcher, you could build a 3 or 4 ft wide net that clamps shut on the drone. Kind of like a Venus fly trap. Could rig a foot switch to clamp it shut. You'd break some prop blades, but those are cheap. Just keep a dozen or so sets on board.
Agree about the repair. Its just minimal surface adition. It might halt some small movement, but if she gets a big blow against it a few more times. I don't think that patch will make that much difference :)
I would say it is human nature to try and fix your broken boat to the degree you can underway.
Agreed that the bolted arrangement you suggested would be the thing to do if you had the materials.
Velcro!
Fly the drone into a net you put up. If missing the net try again.
Indeed thats the way to go, already seen it during the past ocean race.
There has to be a better way folks :)
These Irish guys used a net to catch their drone th-cam.com/video/Pkp9xQrtEzM/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Dear Florian, many thanks for your interesting technical , meteorological and more competent informations., which I appreciate a lot.
Anyway, what I miss is correct pronounciation of sailors names in their native language, mostly French. Take a leaf out of the books of Andy Robertson or Mark Jardine from Sail-World.
Good exemple is your let's say fancy pronounciation of Arnaud de Boissières in some kind of Frenglish. As a consequence, no French speaking (and other) people understand, who you are talking about. So it's just an act of politeness as well as correctness to switch to native language.
Sounds like Elon should work on the drone capture problem
hehe for sure :)
NO GREASE NO BEARINGS ??????
I think Pip might be Happy-Happy-Happy, because she did that carbon glass repair without a mask to protect against the fumes?
Those brass gears from Sam autopilot gearbox where not brand new for the Vendée globe 2024. Like airplane parts they have a valid date for the programmed maintenance. I would have left dock at Sable de Olon with an almost new one.
Florian may want to reconsider his dream of being going into drone marketing. 🩹🤕🩹
