I really like The Long Walk. It is in my top 3 Bachman books, that always swap places with each other on which one is No.1. So it’s either The Long Walk, The Running Man or Thinner. All three are excellent sooo yeah xD
I just finished the book maybe half an hour ago. I love dystopian stories like the hunger games, the handmaids tail etc. I loved the intenseness of the book, and i read it in around 6 days i think during a very busy week🙏 so i was really into this story, but the ending was kind of underwhelming for me. I know it's an ending up for interpretation but i would have preferred an ending with loads of action, and twists, but it still is an interesting ending for a very good and gripping novel!
I struggle with King's writing, which i feel is more of a me issue than a critique of his skill as an author. That said i keep coming back to his stories because he does some of the best character work of any aithor ever. He makes you feel something (not always a good something) for every single character he creates, which i find amazing. The Long Walk is soul crushing. I cant help but feeling some of these reviews missed the whole point of the story, esp the ending.
Interesting. I am doing my own chronological reread of King (Bit stalled on the videos, but hey, got all teh way to Dreamcatcher) but I am skipping the Batchman books for now. What I am quite sad at the one stars reviews is that some seemed to simply not get that a) the "volunteering" was not quite voluntary, not really, and b)that it was a book written in the 70s. I get not liking it, because well, King is not everyone's cup of tea, but disliking it because it makes you feel tired, and anxious and wondering what the hell is this about when... that is EXACTLY the point? Then it's just not liking the book because it IS the book. Yes, it's only the guys walking but... that's what the book clearly states it's about.
The Long Walk was written in the mid 60’s it was an incredibly openly racist and homophobic time. Was King not supposed to write about the reality of that? As a queer person, I’d be a lot more pissed off if King pretended that wasn’t happening.
Not only he presented that it happened, he actually went later on to state CLEARLY that it was wrong. That homophobia was wrong, and evil and he did it long before many other authors did so.
As a gay man I personally don't mind the gay jokes the characters exchange between each other. Its the harsh reality of what humor was to teenage boys back then 🙏 It would be unrealistic if King pretended that black people and queer people were 100% accepted

The Long Walk is honestly a top 5 Stephen King book for me, and EASILY the best Bachman in my opinion
I’m with you on the Bachman ranking…not quite top 5 for me, but genuinely very, very good

Agreed like most authors did then, king was very progressive for his time and I’m glad he confronted how bad it was
