- Once proud warriors of the Imperium, these Astartes were ravaged by a warp storm of unprecedented magnitude. Now with their bodies corrupted, chapters of The Judged are sent on a penitent crusade in the Eye of Terror to regain The Emperor's favor. However, none could see the hand of the Ruinous Powers manipulating the pieces on the board behind closed doors...
Enjoy the latest showcase for victims of Warhammer 40k's most ill-fated crusades! These minis are meant as a starting point for other conversions in the army. They can either be downscaled into regular troops or upgraded into HQ units, allowing you to make your own warband!

I'm honored chief 😂
Enjoy the nightmares and/or dreams
It's 2:30am and I have work at 10am. Caffeine is sleep.
Same here buddy
Ghostriding the Heresy Whip sounds fucking baller
I LOVED the grey death mini. The colors made me think about what a frozen corpse may look like. With making non, deathguard nurgle marines, it can be hard to think of color schemes that fit other than straight green. The idea of basing them on different types of decay is awesome. Great vid, subbed.
Thank you kindly! And yeah, it feels like Nurgle marines all just look the same to me so that's why I was turned off to them for so long. I can feel my appreciation for them growing though 😁
I love how you adapt so many no body in such a cool way
Thank you friend 😁
That Invocators paint job you did actually really slaps, I love some wacky color schemes
Thanks man, and I do as well. Really makes them stand out in a crowd lol
It looks great - and its obvious why it turned purple in the official mini artwork... you go and tell the Eavy Metal artists under time pressure to do the original scheme for an unknown warband that will get barely any notice in the codex :D
All five of these guys came out really well. Just superb work. The Abyssal Crusade sounds rad as heck. I wish GW gave more love to these variant CSM warbands.
For those looking for more parts for these kinds of conversions, Spellcrow has a bunch of them. Both for regular Space Marines and Chaos ones. They've got fur-covered wolf parts that would look great on Magma Hounds, robes for the Death Shadows, etc.
Third party bit sellers are definitely a great option! I just don't have a lot of bits myself 😅
That Death Shadows cloak marine you made DRIPS harder than the pacific.
Got that Sybari Style 😎
Wow. Was just looking for chaos kitbashing ideas 2 hours before this drop. Pleasantly surprised, and instant subscription. Don’t disappoint me for your lack of clairvoyance in the future.
Thank you friend! And I can't reveal too much, but let's just say I knew you'd say that 😏
@@TheLichsLaboratory😂
Ah you were intending to use the old chaos space marine sorcerer helmet. One of my favorite (now OOP) bits. The old chaos space marine kit had a lot of those. I wish they would've kept the god specific heads in production for the chaos marines.
Yeah man. Good to see ya here
@@Matt-md5yt Matt like in the fella which I meat in the comment section of Vivid Mini Mods?
I think it's been a while since we last talked. How are you doing?
@@boneman-calciumenjoyer8290 I am good dude
Good eye chief! And I agree, it makes me wish that some bits could be moved to like, faction specific accessory kits (that are reasonably priced unlike the modern ones)
@@TheLichsLaboratory it's the oddest thing.
All these god flavoured bits were part of a separate command sprue, you most likely know which one I'm talking about. (The one with the banners and special weapons)
So it really wouldn't be too much of a hassle to keep that one around as an upgrade sprue for flavoring you chaos marines.
It took a few seconds for the joke to click with the Magma Hounds, but when it did I let out a groan on a spiritual level.
You have no idea how happy this comment makes me 🤭
Using the Fallen is more practical but your version just looks so godamn cool
Thank you! My robe isn't as crisp but having some of the new CSM models underneath adds, I think
Obscure lore, painting, kitbashing AND 30+ minutes long? Fucking hell, the algorithm gets something right!
Glad you have you here mate 😁
Great job man, really impressive editing at the start and all the kitbashes and paintjobs were awesome!
Thank you chief! Glad you enjoyed it!
the way the Invocators color scheme has been slightly altered it feels to me like it's supposed to be a red to blue color shift metallic
I actually considered using a color shift paint but didn't like the result I got with it. I used Turbo Dork but maybe a different brand like GrernStuffWorld's color ahifting paints could get a better result for the altered scheme
Another excellent job mate! Really nice work on the gradients of the Invocaters, and that Grey Death marine is wickedly unique!
Always cool to see more lore and mini representation of these obscure chapters and war bands😁
Thank you friend! I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😁
It would be cool if the Vorpal Swords went on a crusade to hunt down the remaining warbands spawned of the Abyssal Crusade
That's a fair point. I imagine they'd be a bit reluctant to take up any other kinds of missions knowing those corrupted chapters are still walking around and making them look bad
For me, I think the texture of the grey death would work perfectly as some kind of underwater undead marine. I instantly thought of like barnacles and that kind of crud, kind of reminiscent of the the undead pirate crew in the Pirates Of the Caribbean Movies. Amazing job!
That little ‘hardened paper for green stuff skeleton’ was actually a really good idea. I’m definitely going to be using that for my SM and S2D models. Fur capes for everyone!
It's definitely a nice budget/improv option but just be mindful that it doesn't hold up to a lot of pressure before the putty 😅
Heya Lich. I'm a VERY avid chaos kitbasher (I have two CSM armies, all of them with heavily kitbashed models) and man do I love seeing someone who likes converting endless ranks of crazed chaos worshipping traitor marines. After watching your video I had a few ideas on expanding each warband's styling. One easy way to vary up the bitz in general is to look for 3rd party bitz (Spellcrow, Kromlech, Wargame Exclusive and Liber Daemonic come to mind as the main four) but there are a few specific ones:
-For the Oracles of Change, one thing they got over the Thousand Sons is they (presumably) lack the Rubricae, meaning every marine in there is a flesh and blood servant of the Change of Ways, which mean mutations! One way to represent this in a subtle way for rank and files is to take a bald exposed CSM head and simply graft horns/spikes from another and/or sculpt things like tendrils or other mutations. A single repeated head can go a long way depending how you place the horns and what horns you use. For more higher ranked units I'd recommend mix and matching very subtly with the Possesed kit, namely using the heads and backpacks on champions, lords and other HQ.
-The Invocators definitely lean into an area similar to the Word Bearers, so you definitely need something a bit different. In between their Cleric name and summoning daemons there is definite overlap with the Word Bearers so my main idea is to have champions and HQ be accompanied by all sort of weird and grotesque daemons, hell spawned weirdoes and more. Go find some small WizKid minis like goblins or some imps and glue them to their bases.
-Grey Death is definitely an interesting one, as just leaning into the same ideas as the Death Guards is too easy. Where the DG are bloated and monstrously fat, I see the the former Iron Drakes as worn out, sickly thin, famished and broken. Sickly, twisted, ghoulish marines with worn down and hastily repaired crude armor covered with patches of fungus and rust. Chains, bolts and welded metal hastily used to repair their failing armor. Any exposed skin is pale, fungus infested and grey, with sunken cheeks and stretched out skin.
These are all excellent suggestions friend! Very good point with the Oracles of Change as well. Not dealing with the ol dusties definitely opens new doors for conversions 😍👍
I gotta know what that Invocator clip was. That had me rolling on the ground when he said "a Dungeons And Dragons demon"
Here you go! th-cam.com/video/QGVlKc7zDGU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iyIzom1_HSbI5ubX
The editing you do for the painting steps is really good.
The explanations you use with the info banners at the bottom are sweet. You do good work guy.
Glad you like them! I realize it can be a bit disjointed sometimes but I try my best to make the viewing experience as smooth as possible
I absolutely love the kit batch that you did of the Invocators as the chaos space Marine looks aesthetically pleasing.
Thank you friend! I'm very fond of him as well 😁
@@TheLichsLaboratory you're welcome and their color scheme reminds me of Night Lords but they're bit on the purple side.
Came here from the Mythos Angelica Mortis video - I actually paused it when you brought this video up because I have such a fondness for lesser-known Chaos Warbands. Painted my first Chaos Space Marines in a variety of Warband colors, even. It was less about "Oh, which Warband do I like the lore of the most?" I just went through the wikia's "Pictorial Lists of Traitor Legions & Renegade Space Marine Warbands" pages and went with what caught my eye. ...And then I learned about some Khorne Daemonkin Warbands and got attached to them. So it goes.
I did try painting up one of them as an Invocator but I'd ended up frustrated trying to get the blends right and just went for a Sons of Vengeance scheme instead.
Anyways! Great video.
The Invocator is tricky so I dont blame you! 😅
Seriously impressed with your Grey Death Legionaire. Always wanted to paint up a Nurgle Chaos Warband, but ended up following Malal/Malice. Subbed!
Thank you friend! And Malal is still an excellent choice, my brother of Chaos 😎🤝😎
Babe wake up, new Lich's Lab video just dropped.
We'll switch spots. You wake up and I'll take a nap. I need it 😓😂
I waited at the flagpole for over an hour, wtf!! 😂
That nurgle marine is amazing!!
My friggen mom picked me up early to go to the friggen dentist (I have to say frig bc I got in trouble for saying the F word already) 😡😡😡😡😡
I love the Invocators’ odd gradient, personally. It matches so many descriptions of Slaaneshi marines painting their own armor however they find pleasing, instead of just pink and black. If you stuck to the color palette, each marine looking different because you bulk painted them would fit the lore.
As someone ho also happens to not love the current death gard, I totally adore your version of the nurgel marines. And now even I want to own one.
Glad to see I'm not alone on this!
Editing and humor was on point, great paint jobs as always!
Thanks for the support man, hope you're doing well 😁
You're so underrated!! I wish more people find your channel❤
Thank you for the kindness friend 😊
I wish the Abyssal Crusade was given a campaign book by GW and a visual aid of what these chapters and warbands looked like.
Chances are slim to none, but it would be cool 😔
Death Shadows seem like a good opportunity to make a Chaos Lion El Johnson kitbash
That's a pretty good point. Could be a cool daemon prince or something 🤔
@@TheLichsLaboratory depends on the size relative to the Demon Prince model.... Although I feel like yeah, they'd definitely be a chapter whose idea of a Demon Prince is just "A Bigger guy"
Next one should be about the guardsman regiments.
Guard regiments is something I want to expand into in the future but at the moment I just have a lot of spare SM/CSM laying around. Also been brainstorming some more stuff for obscure xeno species after my Slaugth video I did. Even though I agree that marines get enough attention, they and their spiky brethren are still my favorite factions so it's what I'm most likely to gravitate to
@TheLichsLaboratory fair fair, and you know what? I'll be there to support you every step of the way.
@@pablomireles7443I greatly appreciate the support friend! It's very heartwarming
Not sure if someone said this yet but that shoulder and helmet are both from the 3e Chaos Marines kit, they were originally meant as a Tzeentch-marked Champion helmet and shoulder.
People have mentioned it's an older kit but not specifically which one I think. Thanks chief 👍
Would you be up for doing more of these? I can find hardly any references to obscure Chaos Marine warbands from the old books (New books just seem to delete them).
This was absolutely amazing to see done as a video and I really hope to see more (I'd love to see your take on the Brotherhood of Darkness).
Of course mate, I love doing these little dives into obscure factions. Funnily enough the Brotherhood of Darkness was slated for my other obscure Chaos Warbands video but they were bumped out by another warband. I don't quite remember the reason though, think it was for color variety maybe? They're still on the radar though so I wont forget em 😁
Also if you're looking for more obscure factions, I'd comb through the oldest codices you can find or just fall down the 40k wikipedia rabbit holes. With both the fandom wiki and Lexicanum there's a lot to sift through
Cool kitbash ideas for each warband:
Magma hounds: maybe the leader of their warband has either a dog head, or has 3 separate heads extending from his neck
Oracles of change: I think it was nailed by adding thousand sons bits, maybe add some other tzeentchian deamon bits for their special troops like a guy riding on top of a screamer of tzeentch or something
Death shadows: they seem pretty sneaky, I would suggest some raven guard bits actually, that or maybe some grim reaper aesthetics what with those robes
Invocators: maybe some word bearer or thousand sons sorcery bits, I also personally really like the idea of making them more deamon-y
The grey death: I’m thinking an iron warrior aesthetic but nurgle-fied what with the 100 years siege and all, maybe bring the fungus theme back with some more nature-y bits
Don’t forget the most important chapter sent in there. /yourdudes/
Also that is a kino old-school FW Plague Marine
/yourdudes/ is always the optimal choice 😎🤝😎
Really loving these obscure chapters paint guides! Getting me really in the mood for painting every time I watch one of these.
Kitbashing and sculpting custom minis is what brought me into the hobby from the lore i love this stuff i am currently working on a custom heretic astartes army
Awesome vid. The crop top armor is so iconic !! Definitely gonna use it for my exalted champion of Slaanesh
Crop top supremacy 😎🙌
Awesome, especially the Invocators. Subscribed.
My headcanon is that all their armour is colourshifting due to chaos corruption, so the newer purple ones are just what those individual marines looked like, at that moment.
Thank you very much! 😁
The Grey Death mini is actually pretty lore accurate to the Death Guard, like there's passages and descriptions of them being CAKED in putrid rotting filth and then the actual minis are all very clean and covered in bloated meat/tentacles/horns but nothing that would even vaguely describe 'literally bathed in lakes of congealing waste and rot slop'.
Now I'm just wondering how many layers of texture paint I can put on a mini before God casts me out from Heaven 🤔
@@TheLichsLaboratory I'd estimate a solid bottle would do it.
I really liked your Invocator kitbash, so a fun idea for melee weapons for them would be to take the handle of a chainsword and the claw of a deamonet or Tyronid and a little greenstuff and have a weird fleshy sword like object for them to wield... bonus points if you have a greenstuff cable coming out of their flesh to connect to the weapon.
Or better yet, graft it into the arm so it's like he has a sword hand 😏
@@TheLichsLaboratory If I did that it would be with the chainsword blade, similarly to chainsaw man, would work very well for a Slaanesh chaos marine, go with one of the world eater double bladed chainsword blades and then cut off an open hand cut it in half and then putty the blade in between the two haves and the whole thing onto the wrist stump, maybe greenstuff on a larger codpiece along with your crop top and some kind of a messed up head.
The oracles remain me of the heresy thousand sons
Definitely, just not as deep of a red
Your 'The Grey Death' are EXACTLY what I've wanted from true 'Plague Marines'. I would love to recreate this look. And the others are fantastic too. 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you very much! 😁
Found a new favorite conversion channel! I keep running out of kitbash content, and I just discovered your channel and I'm gonna devour it, cause this was awesome 👍🏻 😎
Thank you very much boss!
Oh Gods! This Grey Death guy is just awesome! I previously never was going to buy Death Guard minis, because of no interesting paint schemes (they're just all green or white), but this video changed my mind completely! I can't wait now to buy and paint some Plague Marines, using similar scheme.
Glad you like it! I was the same way for a long time but I think texturing the armor was the secret sauce that finally made me see the light. I'm eager to do a DG kill team or something one day
@@TheLichsLaboratory your idea is really great, the miniature really looks like it has rotted several times and it looks so cool!)
@@iamalpharius7100 Next time I want to experiment with digging into the model for battle damage divots, rusted pock marks, and maybe even organs hanging out. I think it'd be so cool to see that with the texturing 😍
@@TheLichsLaboratory can't wait to see it!
@@TheLichsLaboratoryCould you please also make a video with more detailed instruction of doing Plague Marines in this style? Probably when you'll be painting your Nurgle kill team?
Always wanted to do some magma hounds. Love that someone's painting up the obscure codex warbands
Oh yeah!!!!! The invocator is my favorite of the bunch 👍 awesome video
Thanks man! 😁
I was not expecting the Mabinogi reference, but given other vids where you mention your custom marines and the theme, i shouldnt be suprised. That old first aid quest was a nightmare, almost as bad as trying to get thunder pages.
I had the easiest time with Thunder but Fireball was a legit nightmare. I have a bone to pick with whoever thought to put an expiration timer on those pages 😤
@TheLichsLaboratory I feel that. I think I was lucky with fireball. But man, thunder page 4... rng hated me so bad. Spent weeks farming that stupid succubus.
Each is so cool in their own right, love these minis!
Very glad you liked them! I feel the same way. Even warbands I wasn't as crazy about when I started ended up producing some really cool minis
Going to start a magma hound army now, thanks
Hell yeah dude 😆👍
Yaaay a long(ish) form Lich video
That last poll about video length may have had some relevance lol
This was so good man. Fantastic work!
Thank you! 😁
For the Invocators I'd just translate the armor panels to a Galaxy scheme instead of the weird color transitions in the codex.
While I feel like that wouldn't really encapsulate the Invocators vibe to my personal tastes, the thought of galaxy patterned armor could actually look really cool on something. You might be giving me something to cook with in the future 🤔🤔🤔
The Grey Death are my favorite just to due to how much better they are than the current Nurgle Marines, really got the crusty fungus infected nurgle aestetic that was in the first WD I read right. My favorite sculpts of Death Guard/Nurgle Marines are probably the early 00s ones, shame I have only seen one box of them for sale for an acceptable price.
Kind of want to make a Death Shadows Kill Team just so I can blame any losses on it being in character, lol.
Yeah I think I'm also just burnt out of Nurgle stuff from the various Warhammer games too. The Plague Marine aesthetic can be really cool, but just not the current ones. Definitely some good bits to poach though.
And you can just call loses a Death Shadows patented tactical feint 🤭
20:40 Looks fuggin great bro 🍻

really cool video i love the format incorporating all aspects of the hobby. great job!
Thank you! I am still experimenting with the particulars but this video format has generally been pretty well received! I'm glad you like it as well friend 😁
you could totally get some of those old forgeworld plauge marine bits from recasters. the quality is identical to forgeworld in my experience
While I do know a recaster or two, even a friend whose working on his own recast skills, it'd be nice if they were still buyable through official channels to hit their primary/largest user base. Then again it's Games Workshop so 🤷♂️
I love this obscure schemes series! You did great work on all these schemes and I'm looking forward to see what's next.
Glad you like them friend!
More chaos warbands for my chaos armies
A fine addition to my collection.mp4 😂
Nurgle be praised, I love diseased gritty marines!
the algorithm of the youtube gods brought me here to you and I'm glad for it. You were entertaining AND informative. My only issue is the audio for this video was really quiet. I had to crank my volume more than normal just to hear you m8.
Thank you for your strongest comment, Comment Seller 🤭
And yeah, the audio levels are something I try to pay attention to. I test each video with good headphones and through my normal desktop speakers to make sure the balance is appropriate. General audio levels are something I have been reevaluating though. A few years ago when I was setting the standard I opted for audio on the quieter end since everyone's audio setups are so vastly different. The logic was that I'd rather have to turn up a video rather than have my ears explode two seconds in, but given your feedback I may have to try elevating the audio for a video or two and finding a good balance for everyone. Thank you for the feedback and I'm glad you still enjoyed the video 😁
I was never really into playing 40k but I used to paint space marines and other miniatures years ago. Somehow your videos make me want to try it out again. Those obscure warbands are a pretty interesting topic.
I'm glad I could inspire you lol. If you do, I'd love to hear what warband/chapter you end up picking 😁
So far I've done Steel Brethren (boring...), Corpus Brethren (look kinda cool, but painting white is a pain in the ass) and The Scourged (so far the most fun to paint). Gonna do either The Tainted or The Purge next. I have not painted a single miniature for the last ten years before picking up those Chaos Marines. I'm still a terribly slow painter but the results look pretty neat.
Great work man! I'm envious of your sculpting skills. Seeing the Invocators mini further solidified my decision to go with crop top power armor on some of my Berzerkers when I get to them. It's awesome watching your journey in the hobby and how much your channel has grown.
Hey man! Thanks a lot. Good to hear from you chief, hope things have been going well on your end 😁
A very thorough and fun watch, you earned a sub ❤
Thank you friend 😊
I saw on your channel that you have a thing going where you paint subs factions, and i just thought i would throw mine in here real quick.
The Astral Serpents; live on a jungle planet with a red dwarf sun causing plant life to be blue. They have a flaw which will sometimes give them serpentine eyes or tongues, and occasionally patches of scales. Their color scheme is a green-teal with bright red highlights in the pauldrons and the hands. Their planet has a extremely large population if snakes, big shocker, and one of their initiation rituals is for aspirants to enter a pit containing the most venomous serpent on their planet and survive being bitten by it.
Loved the look of the Oracles!
They grew on me quickly as well 😅
These are all awesome man, but I especially appreciate the Grey Death character - I'm building a few of my own plague/rot miniatures for a game, and hadn't even thought of using texture paste(s) to help sell the oxidation and decay. I'm definitely gonna borrow the idea!
Keep in mind that crackle medium is a bit harder to control than crackle paste! Shoot for variation with smooth areas and different textures for an even better result than what I got 😁
Absolutely! Thanks for the advice!@@TheLichsLaboratory
@@popnihl Of course friend! 😁

Hi! Just wanted to say thank you: I just finished building my my first gunpla (it's an Aerial Rebuild) while watching (well, rather listening to) your videos on kitbashing space marines. I certainly haven't learned a lot of lore or techniques (I'm also not really into tabletop gaming), but it was a very nice, even kind of meditative experience! You style of narration is very relaxing.

Awesome work!
Thanks boss 😁👍
I once did a killteam for the deathwatch where I kitbashed them all to have as much flavour from their chapters as possible and always wanted to do some chaos counterpart for them...this really inspired me to do so. Awesome work
I also went with the Abyssal Crusade story when I created my Chaos Space Marine warband. I painted the Blades Eternal and also wrote them some fluff.
Very nice! Given that there were 30 Judged chapters I'm shocked they weren't fleshed out a tiny bit more, but that also means more potential for fan made lore so it's a great starting point.
Amazing work! Thank you❤
Thank you 😎👍

I really like these, I think you went a bit overboard with the texturing on the last one but the ideas are really cool and the kitbashes even cooler!
this video earned a sub, the crop top idea was simple i just need to be more confident with greenstuff.
Thank you very much chief! And practice makes perfect! It can be intimidating to start bigger sculpting and conversions but it's nothing some hands-on practice can't overcome. I'm rooting for you man 😎👍
