I don’t remember designing those shoulder pads and weapons back at 2002...
but I guess it’s totally true possible since warp time shenanigans . Thanks for reminding me and awesome video!
Edit: I just realized that this comment got so many replies that even people tried to contact me.
I’m very sorry to say I only wrote the previous statement as a joke since Juan Díaz and I happen to share the exact same name. I’m in no way trying to impersonate that Games Workshop employee in any way, shape or form. Once again, I’m terribly sorry if that’s what most people understood since it was only a good-willed joke I made based around a total coincidence. I’m just a guy from Spain and have no relation whatsoever with the person mentioned in the video. I just like 40k and I made a joke that went too far for my own taste without me realizing until now.
Apologies once again to anyone that voted or commented and for any inconvenience. Won’t happen again!

    • @Senbei01
      @Senbei01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Weirdly, they started off with tentacle faces... which had disappeared by the time they got models. They then went for 20 to 30 years looking like pretty basic stealers, till the newer version of Space Hulk got them a load of Dynamic poses, and the most recent 40k version got them a tentacle head option again.
A Nid video could be interesting though. Nids went through a lot of weird design choices over the years, with proto-nids and dominators, Zoats, mind slaves and squig swarms.

The Chaos backpack started life as a Marine jump pack - specifically, the idea was that marine jump packs were formed by adding a jump pack attachment to the standard back pack.
So, if you look at those original csm backpacks, you can see where the inner/lower set of nozzles marks the top of the basic backpack. The extended arms and outer/top nozzles are meant to be the jump pack engines, which is why the arms extend them out so far.
You can see that original intent in the artwork at the 0:38 mark, btw.
The story is that there was some sort of miscommunication during design - distinct Chaos backpacks hadn’t been created for the new Treacher/Renegade minis, but the product packers or someone else, who were told there’d be new backpacks for them, mistook the new jump packs as being the new Chaos packs and the association stuck.
At the 3:35 mark, the one on the right is the original version intended as a jump pack. The left was sculpted after the accident was made and it was decided to use the design as a baroque Chaos equipment, embracing the more organic and spiky look of Chaos.
Over time, the packs would lose their actual vent nozzles as everyone assumed that’s what the jet thrusters were anyways, hence why the modern versions tend to have only two rather than the original four.

They gave them a more archaic look to fit with the "they're survivors from the Horus Heresy" that was _very_ present throughout that entire codex. Best chaos codex ever, lots of "remember this thing that the imperials uses? This is how it was 10 000 years earlier". :)

IMHO the 2nd edition ones were one of the best, although i think the RT-era Chaos Terminators were amazing. The helmets of the new CSM I think don't look nearly as good as the ones before. i've been collecting the old RT renegades on and off for a while now and have a fair few. newer models are certainly superior on a technical level but they've never had a better style.
    also re: the enormous backpack:
i believe that at the time there was some uncertainty as to what a jump pack should look like as there are several pieces of art depicting space marines and chaos marines using their backpack to, well, blast off. some early imperial guard with jump packs also have the exact same kind of unit as the space marines do. that could explain why some marines were drawn without any backpack at all, they were just basic footsloggers. the chaos backpack also has four sets of vents, with one small set that matches the imperial one. makes sense considering that tactical, devastator and assault squads could all be equippe with jump packs.
amusingly enough the RT chaos backpack isn't a great physical fit on the model because of its dimensions, with the 2nd edition chaos backpacks being much easier to put on. which is just as well because trying to source plastic bits from thirty-four years ago is a fool's errand.

Wait.....Khorne Berserkers had previous models? I thought Tzeentch had just made it so Khorne had infantry that’s been in use since the beginning of time.

An excellent and very funny video. Growing up in the 90s, I was mad about the Chaos Marines (I’ve always loved baddies). When I was 5, my birthday present was Space Crusade - yes - the first version with even more unhinged box-art than its successor! I used to marvel at how cool the Chaos Marine looked. What a badass.

Just got an Epic scale Imperator Titan, NOS. So want to build it, and yet want to keep it intact on the sprue for posterity's sake. Didn't have to die for it, but, damn, I might die a bit inside if I mess it up.
Now for a primaris beaky marine army all painted up in early 90's Technicolor glory! For the Emperor!

8:01 that set was also my first citadel miniatures I ever got hold of, along with a set of Black Orcs for Warhammer Fantasy and some citadel combat cards. It was from a local toy shop long before I ever stepped foot in an actual Games Workshop. Seeing that box makes me feel really nostalgic.
