This aired when I was 13 trying to figure myself out like many . I’m thankful for that this story presents an interpretation of the story not often seen NOW let alone 1992. It took courage & bravery to present this story in a world fear/hate more often than not for many.
Very powerful. I was a young teen and in the closet when this storyline aired. Back then there were very few gay portrayals on TV, especially of teenagers. I didn't know any gay people personally yet and there was no internet back then. This storyline was fleshed out deeply and with great sensitivity over a long period of time. It was comforting to watch this and not feel alone. It helped me face who I am and eventually come out to friends in high school and family when I was in college. Thank you OLTL!!!
That was the whole point. We've come so far since this episode aired. On The UK Soap Opera Eastenders Joshua Pascoe who played Ben Mitchell was terrified to come out to his Father Phil Mitchell. He eventually came out, his Father accepted it and married his soulmate Callum a Police Officer. 50 Years ago there was a Teleplay called Girl where a woman falls in love with an army officer in the UK and 30 years ago on the soap opera Brookside a character named Beth had a same sex kiss with her girlfriend margaret it was the first same sex kiss on a UK Soap. Another Lesbian Icon was the late Leah Bracknell who played Zoe Tate on emmerdale from 1989-2006 who also got married in a blessing before same sex marriages were recognized.
I remember when this aired and how groundbreaking it was. Very well acted and nicely done by all the actors. Ryan Phillippe looks so young here! He still looks INCREDIBLE now, with grown children..
I met ryan right after this storyline aired. He was at a meet & greet with some of the other actors. We chatted for a while, told him about some work i did in the community... seemed very down to earth kid, seemed very proud of his work in this, as he should
Thank you for uploading these clips from this storyline for people like me, who until now, had no idea about this incredible and groundbreaking piece of LGBTQ+ history on television. I was born the year this aired, and I’m in tears at how relevant and truthful the writing and portrayals are even today some 32+ years later.
I never saw this show. Looking at the age of the show, the story and lines of the Billy Character are amazing and reflective of the period and performed well. The response of the father is what happened to many young gay men, even to today, particularly of conservative evangelical religious people.
The writing, cinematography, direction, and acting are terrific in this clip. On a side note, taking on this role could have torpedoed Ryan’s acting career. According to IMDB, this was Ryan’s second role. He displays an astounding level of skill, not just talent, in these scenes, marking him as someone to watch for future roles. Given the subject matter and that this is a nationally aired soap opera, things could have turned out much differently. I am glad it didn’t because he has prospered as one of the best talented and skilled actors in the business. Congratulations, Ryan. Bravo. And thank you to the people who made this and his career happen.
I agree with your comment. There’s much more “good work” in this clip than in most movies today. And I think Ryan Philippe is an underrated actor. He deserves more recognition for his works
Watching this scene hurts me to the core, my homosexuality was discovered in my family at about the same age, by a letter that should not have been found. In a country where they would have burned the TV station that dared to air a series like this at that time. The acting is so compelling and the message so powerful. I was ashamed of myself throughout my adolescence and much of my youth for being gay, I denied it so many times that it makes my stomach turn just remembering my lack of character. I wish I had been like Billy, but no, the damage has been done. I have so much respect for the young people of today, able to fight to be who they really are.
Just watched this by accident. Ironic what life was like back then and what life is about to be like now in 2023. Pretty much the same. Who was the fool that said life cannot repeat itself.....WOW. Soon we will be back in Salem, Mass. And who are the fools who will say..."Don't be silly, that will never happen again".
*This was over 30-years ago in 1992. Easy now to forget how truly terrifying and taboo this topic was back then. Unlike the 20-something's routinely portraying adolescents, Ryan was an actual senior in high school at the time. Phillippe's career (and personal life) could've been obliterated for taking such a risk. Thankfully his talent, integrity and (yes) beauty armored him against the fallout. Commentary Re: this groundbreaking role can be found in "Visible: Out on Television" here on TH-cam.*
I hadn't watched OLTL when it was on, but as a gay man, I wish I had. Watching this in 2020 brings me to tears for how true it rings to my own experiences.
Yes, and he was very down to earth back then. Thanks for the comments about the scenes they were a great challenge to me to write but am glad that I was able to be part of the writing team for this storyline.
I didn't know David Bowie had a son! :-P. But seriously, I wish I had seen this in 1992, it would have helped me to come out earlier. Great work Ryan! Thank you for doing this! 🥰
His dad is a right tool. Ryan was one of my first TV crushes.. Him, Joseph Gordon Levitt in 2rd Rock and will wheaton in star trek...... Definitely knew I was gay :D 😍😍
When I told my parents I was gay, they said yes we know and have known for years. My mother said that's nice then asked if I had a boyfriend and if so when do they get to meet him. I'm lucky because in my family we treat everybody with respect and accept everybody for who they are. I have two gay uncles my grandmothers brother and my fathers younger brother along with a few cousins a now 13 year old nephew.
@@unextincteursestvide783 you think his dad would ever go on queer Eye For The straight Guy to get his wardrobe and order. It looked like some nighty baggy pajamas pants.I haven't seen trousers like this since 1970
Yeah I know this used to be the typical reaction from parents. Unless your parents are biblically religious. Most parents accept it. I remember when this episode came out because Nora would go on in certain episodes about how wrong she felt that his dad took the news. That woman was a gossip queen for sure.
yes there have been on All In The Family and on Dallas and on the 80s Showtime series Brothers.one of the brothers was gay.and on Soap Billy Crystals character was bisexual and for a while he was friends with a lesbian character
@thrashdouche21 You should tell them, it would be the best thing for all of you. That is why I got involved with the writing of this storyline with One Life To Life, which by the way goes off the air next Friday....how sad. We put a lot of work in developing this storyline and to keep it as real as possible. Once again am glad to have been a part of gay history
Yes, Marty started it and the audience hated her for it. That's how powerful the storyline was. Of course years later they redeemed Marty when she was gangraped. That was another controversial storyline. OLTL never shied away from the taboo stuff.
My family had difficulties accepting my orientation, yet they never flipped out at me like the dad character is to his son. My family and I aren’t super close but I am grateful that they allow me in their lives and that they never treated me like this, with such rage and contempt and ignorance.
I never knew Ryan played this role or about this character. It shows the same attitudes that exist even in 2017! We've come far eg in Canada but yet alot of this misunderstanding if what a spectrum of reality it is re gay ppl.
I always knew Ryan was insanely hot in an a slightly off beat way; I never knew he was insanely beautiful in the purest classical sense until now. He looks like a different person to me than his even slightly older self. Both equally hot but quite different.
What’s hysterical is that the actor playing the father looks, acts like a typical middle aged queen and his character is so anti-gay. I guess Robert Reed wasn’t available.
This was quite a gripping storyline. However, I have one exception to this clip. Billy uses the fact that he has no photos of girls as Exhibit A that he’s gay. Well, I never had pictures of girls in my wallet when I was in high school (which would have been around the same time as this storyline aired as me and Ryan Phillippe are around the same age). And I wasn’t gay. There was just a lack of interest in my case! 😂 😂 😂 However, I’ve never been as handsome as Phillippe so maybe the fact that “Billy” didn’t have any girlfriends would cause one to wonder in his case and not so much in mine! ;)
If only daytime Deana stuck to socially relevant stories like this and others instead of the junk stories of cloning, time travel, demon possessions, back from the dead, alien, and other far fetched stories, perhaps our beloved shows would still remain on the air!
This story was so powerful. Marty was in love with andrew & spread lies that he was seducing billy . I remember an episode where andrew was getting beaten up by a homophobic man & his bible was flapping in the wind. It really got to me. Originally Joey was the one michael malone wanted to be gay but abc said no way was vikis son going to be gay, as she was the shows star. This led right into the gang rape story introduced todd manning. The writers wanted two things to show Marty as the girl who cried wolf . She spread all these lies so people were not believing her about the gang rape & it also was a story to redeem her. Todd manning was just a plot device but nobody predicted how todd wound up taking over the show ! I love how from 92 to 94 the writing was so damn good & stories ended & started another one bc of it. Linda Gottlieb was the ep & she wanted to change day time & bring these serious real stories to soaps & she believed a story should have a solid 3 month arc that leads to another story. So the arc can end but have ramifications forever like Marty's rape. That was brought up til the show ended. A lot of the actors that werent the A characters during Gottlieb & malone were pissed off bc they felt yes they put out great stories but only one at a time instead if several going at once. Mostly that was jim depaiva ( max) complaining bc he used to be the big star on oltl in the late 80s when he left & came back it wasnt long at all before todd came on & took his place. Finally the actor admits that he took the place of bo as the leading man than todd took his place & his ego would not let him get that it's just how life goes a younger actor will take ur place. Max was an 80s throwback while todd looked & was the age of the 90s looking young guy.
The redemption through rape scenario is offensive, and is one of the reasons I've always hated Marty's character. After the rape, she was rewritten as irritatingly self-righteous.
Bump 2021 - I’ve seen the storyline now from scratch. I would have been about 12 when this aired, I’m in the UK so would never have seen or heard of it. People don’t understand the concept of ‘coming out’ and dismiss it, this storyline portrayed it very well. 100% there were no ‘gays’ on tv at least in a positive light, only negative. No internet and you were truly alone with no support, and zero ability to even find things out. Literally the ‘only gay in the village’ but for real, you couldn’t speak about it to anyone. Thankfully times have moved on. It’s still a big deal, but not a massive deal anymore. The media is plastered with gay things, and there is support from many sources. Generally each generation has a different viewpoint on homosexuality, and to this day it’s not something I am open about. Need to know basis. I’ve had enough let downs to know not to share it openly, which is sad. But I’m so glad to see how far the LGBT community has come and often the easy acceptance of the younger generation. Still a long way to go, but I’m very hopeful homophobia like racism will be resigned to the history books (at least by the major majority!). Also had I been straight and seen Ryan at that age, lol I think that woulda turned me gay. He is still hot today, seems such a genuine nice guy too unlike a lot of stars who are faking it.
The sad part is everyone is jumping all over the dad because of something he did not know or understand himself. You need to remember this was what late 80s or early 90s!
everyone is jumping on him because that is his son and he should loved and supported him no matter what. Let's get really real here being gay is not the worst thing your son could be. Hell is very mild compared to what he could be into. Trust me my family has learned the hard way
As despicable as the parents are in these clips, I will say that soaps used to be like this - they had good stories, good acting, and a nice amount of energy. Tune in to the few soaps that exist today - they are boring and flat. I can tell they spend most of their time putting makeup on the actors, and very little time on writing.
That’s a funny casting choice here. The actor who played Ryan Philippe’s father had a sort of a gay looking appearance in his face and Ryan Philippe who’s supposed to play a gay character looks much more straight than him
My family found out that I was gay in the late 80s at age 12 yrs it was hard but we didn't speak until the mid 90s I come out again we spoke for days to months but my mum thinks I was on drugs but I don't take drugs but I was in a relationship but my mum knew if they were good or not and my job I meet gay people they got married but people ask questions I didn't mind answering the questions because there's were so many different types of gays and the ones r married don't support LGBTQ and I don't but there was some that sleep around party get hight and now LGBTQ plus it's getting bigger and bigger more than half of them don't know who they are nowadays
Never watch that show back then but -- the dad’s ( and much of society’s) attitude is exactly why so many young people committed suicide when facing this issue.
Ryan’s acting in this is amazing! So inspirational

Trust me my family has learned the hard way
@@jenae331 exactly! Perfectly said
lol....oh the pearls.
Try living in a town of 89 people in South Dakota and be like that kid at 12yo
I could've def used this as a teen. Much more poignant than the first openly gay i saw on TV on Dawson's Creek
Not a choice..
yes it is
@@damianlatimer5753 how did you choose?
billy is better off without his dad if he wants to be like that
bigger4life43
nope
@@friedfrog5447 yes he is
W Mom, L Dad
This Father is a nut job.
As despicable as the parents are in these clips, I will say that soaps used to be like this - they had good stories, good acting, and a nice amount of energy. Tune in to the few soaps that exist today - they are boring and flat. I can tell they spend most of their time putting makeup on the actors, and very little time on writing.
The father looks a little like nancy culp maybe they related
That’s a funny casting choice here. The actor who played Ryan Philippe’s father had a sort of a gay looking appearance in his face and Ryan Philippe who’s supposed to play a gay character looks much more straight than him
It's almost like all gay people are related.
Who's the actor playing the dad? He looks familiar.
This is so hard to watch.
The music.........
Haha Ryan phillippe looks like he is trying to hide a laugh when he is coming out lol
"practicing homosexual" versus the non practicing kind I guess...
How can you be sure your gay? It was 1979 and wham bam thank you mam I was gay 👨🏼❤️👨🏻❤
Looking at Mrs McNamara's dress just spoiled my appetite yuck
What a toxic dad.
I'm gay - big deal
Never watch that show back then but -- the dad’s ( and much of society’s) attitude is exactly why so many young people committed suicide when facing this issue.
Billy's dad is the worst actor in history.
And the wife too!
