I love that image of the old Globe and Mail building! I wonder how many people remember it? It was actually called the William H. Wright Building(1937-38), and though by no means the tallest(only 6 stories), was certainly one of the finest examples of the 'streamlined' art-deco style in Toronto, if not all of Canada. Other notable surviving examples of this style include Hamilton's 1933 TH&B Railway Station(today's GO Centre Station) and the old Toronto Postal Delivery Building(1939-41), today known as Scotiabank Arena. Sadly, the striking Wright Building was demolished in 1974 in preference for a parking lot until the Exchange Tower was built on the site in 1981. The 1970s was an awful decade for art deco losses, and the epicentre of that destruction was the block bounded by Bay, King, Adelaide and York Streets. Aside from the Wright Building, we also lost the 1938-48 Bank of Montreal tower in 1975, however the most egregious loss(IMO) was the beautiful old Toronto Star Building(built in 1929 and yes, the inspiration for the 'Daily Planet' of Superman comics fame), which was unceremoniously demolished in 1972 to make way for First Canadian Place(1975). Just imagine how much richer the downtown core would be today if they'd had the foresight to save this wonderful building and simply shift the new tower to the west of it(or better yet, to any one of the countless empty lots available at the time)! Yikes...don't get me started!

    Another great video Mr
Arnold. Toronto could have been a beautiful city if they kept even half of those buildings. Beautiful architecture.
How can I send you some photos?

Great shots. Thanks. Every time I see a photo of the NW corner of Yonge and Bloor, it makes me cringe to think of the soulless corner it became. That old CIBC, Pilot Tavern and the other CIBC frontage are fantastic. Obviously, one of the CIBCs was an Imperial Bank back before the 1961 merger of Commerce and Imperial.

The majority of my livelihood was in the building trades and while it put bread on the table and money in my pocket, especially when I was working in the financial district, at the sametime as a person with a sense of history and design I hated the loss of what came before. At the rate we are going with both commercial and residential structures being torn down or buried under 'renovations' most of which have absolutely a rank of zero in way of design, pretty soon we will the most bland looking city in the world.

Excellent, the old B&Ws with heavy streetcar lines and power cables - up high - create a sort of spider web over the streets.
Funny that the new views do not have that visual effect.

3:56 The white car waaay down the street is a 1963-64 Dodge or Plymouth and it looks pretty new. That picture is probably circa 1964-1972, at the most. Most cars back then, like today, don’t make it past 5-10 years old.

Actually that would be the Toronto Star, in the comics it started out as the Daily Star before it became the Daily Planet.
