Fleming’s bravura years were long passed when she brought her Armida to the Met. She excelled in other repertoire of course.
I don’t know why people don’t like this. I think she sounds great-it doesn’t matter if it was better in the 90’s. The conductor and stage director made some…choices, and those didn’t help the music at all.
I’ve heard worse... definitely not at the level of the Pesaro recording or the Carnegie one but this is not the worst armida out there... but I guess her earlier essaying of the role was sooo good that this falls short
Ms. Fleming was ill advised. Her "Armida" performances of the 90's are breathtaking. This one, alas, is not.
I'm a fan of Fleming, but this was painful to listen to.
How so?
Adventures In Food with Howard ■ You weren't listening !
She must never have listened to Callas in the aria or she would have let this part go. A good example of how to distract an audience from terrible singing with stupid and constant moving around. I imagine Callas stood in one place and sang exactly what Rossini wrote - every note in impeccably accurate rhythm.
She was not great here but she sang the role on two occasions before.. Pesaro 1993 and Carnegie 1996.. those two recordings available on TH-cam are what you can judge her singing of this aria on...
I love Renée Fleming, she's is one of the best singer ever! And i also love her as Armida, but not in this production. She's not in her best form. Anyway, also Callas made mistakes. Love Fleming.
Fleming is definitely not one the best. Her technique is almost non existent
Opera directors are some of the worst in _show ■ business._ When a singer is performing a great scene, there shouldn't be a whole lot of moving around on stage by other people -- it's very distracting.
This version may not have the dramatic power of her previous vocal presentation ... it's more lyrical, for sure, but still beautiful.
disjointed and unmusical...only Callas dominated this fiendishly difficult aria.
A Rossini singer she is not.
what is THIS?????
Caballe sang this aria best, but she and Fleming have similar voices.
Callas sang it best
A mi me parece que R F hace que este aria no suene a una clase de canto. Suple con picardia la falta de bravura. Y está muy guapa.
Shame on the conductor for anti-stylistic rubati.
Indeed. She always played the jazz blue note angle and stretched everything out of the style. Here in this complicated and already weird tune it is almost unbearable.
5:57 terrible to any ear.
Pauvre Rossini compositeur de jazz malgrés lui! Pauvre Fleming empêtré dans des vocalises approximatives d'une lourdeur inacceptable! Son art est définitivement ailleurs!!
Im not a fan of Fleming, never have bern. Bit she shouldn't have sung this at her age. Non existent coloratura
