Of course, imho your reviews are best-of-the-best, no doubt about that. How many weeks took you to complete all those tests? Monumental amount of work for a youtube channel, this is a pro level review way beyond the wildest dreams of any gear magazine.
Thanks! It actually took about an hour and a half to film each test. But I played it in my head over and over for months trying to find the right approach for each one. Many ideas didn't work first but eventually I found solutions to all topics I wanted to cover. Actually, it worked as soon as I put everything into practical context, like stiffness
Next on the agenda: Guitar Cables? Also, do you think that is would be safe to say that investing in Long (high capacity), but sturdy cables AND a good Buffer will solve most of the problems?
Maybe :) something like that. I guess it really depends on how you gonna use it. For recording i'd better go for a short cable, like 1.5 meters or something. For live, chances are, no one in the audience will hear any difference. I'd go for wireless anyway :) But long cable + buffer is a good question. I'll make some tests!
Just wanted to say I was not expecting the direction of this video nor such detailed info. The effort you took is more than appreciated. Thank you, Max.
I would say that you, sir, have a high score of -49.5db. That is, no noise! Just real information. Thank you for all your good work. You are my guiding light for patch cables!
Upgraded all my patch cables to Providence P203 and no more noise, weird squeeling sounds and less tone loss. Thanks for the comparison! Only downside to the providence are the availability in Europe and their stiffness.
Trying to get an all providence p203 patch cable setup ,but their cables are next to impossible to get. Here in the u.s ,there impossible to purchase.sometimes available in Europe, but with expensive shipping fees!. They need to get better distribution.
Wow. Thank you and Sharla for the time and effort. Really saved me a bunch of time reading reviews. Admittedly had to FF to the conclusion. Was so surprised re the Lava and Mogami results. Subscribed!
Great video and comparison, thanks! I will have to say though I own flat cables (EBS and Rockboard) and never had a sound issue neither on stage nor at home. On the other hand 3 of my sommer cables broke for no reason. And my old planet waves cables always seemed to push themselves out of the jack. So I will still go for the flat ones, simply because they are saving the most space and thus making your pedalboard easy to organize.
Nice to hear! I am planning on doing my first board using EBS PG patches only. These test seemed to only show that if you run cables with other noise on top on them or hit them with a fan that they would suck. I don't plan on doing either of those.
Dude! I’m late to see this video, but thank you so much for putting in all this work. I’m in the process of deciding what cables to switch to & this was the most helpful thing anywhere on the internet!
This is one of the best videos ever related to guitar and sound improvement!! This is how to do a review, thanks for taking the time. You have a new subscriber. Greetings from Mexico!!
This is just incredible work, Max! Easy to follow tests and results and you even included your documentation for download. Thank you so much! I will definitely be rethinking my EBS cables now! I was really excited about those Ibanez PA series.
Nick Humphrey hey, thanks for feedback. I figured it's really important how cables are used, not only the quality of isolation. Before overdrive or basically any gain stage isolation is essential. But once the signal passed that point, isolation is not that critical and EBS and others will do just fine most of the times
The problem with low noise cables is it looks great in a test but when you start playing the guitar is noticeably quieter and those important nuances and frequencies are being removed from your signal, I would have thought its best to have a noisy cable and a noise suppressor that kills the noise when you stop playing.
Mooer PC-6 also a contender for best all-rounder, Providence V206 great too (but way too expensive!) Mooer FC-6 are quite good too if you can bare the possibility of a little crosstalk interference. HOSA IRG 100.5 are bit better with crosstalk, but worse with groundloop noise (not that there should be much of that in a proper set-up anyway). They are only $15-30 for a bundle of them though, so they make a great affordable, lightweight option. Alongside the somewhat meatier, but more reliable Ernie Ball 3-packs for about $25. These are all low capacitance for boards with lots of true bypass pedals, but a decent buffer at the start of the pedal chain would probably match them in performance anyway. @@fuckenps3 The problem with the mooer pc 6 is the connector : the round end that plugs the connector/crimps the cable can "break" off. I've had to blue back multiple ones. I don't use a pedalboard though, if they are fixed in one position it should be ok
I have seen this video about 20 times, thank you very much for doing this Max Solo, many of us were anxious for a video comparison of guitar cables> 1m

Dude . You kicked ASS with this video! Wow! Incredible insight on how some "High End" cables SUCK on noise etc ..you're my hero for doing this test! You ROCK! Greetings from Hollywood California!
well i found today your youtube channel and i guess i'm spending my "day-off" watching your vids ... lol ... great videos! just loving it ... could you do the same tests for guitar cables ... i trying to reduce my noise as much as possible ... :) thank you so much for your info's that teach me so much ... thank you ... from Portugal....
Now this is some pretty hard work ! Thanks for taking the time to do such things. This deserves much more views. I will go with Ernie Ball 6 inch cable since they come in a 3x pack for a good price where I live.
Very good test! Next, I'd like to see you do one on 1/4"-to--1/4" studio or instrument interconnect cables ( -since just about every musician and recording enthusiast uses them ) and there aren't many tests of them on TH-cam. However, this time I'd like to actually HEAR what music sounds like through the cables ( -in addition to the measurements ). Overall, great job! Really enjoyed watching this video.
Absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for this! Just what I was after.. Finally someone has done this.. and talk about doing it "thorough".. Making my choice so much simpler and reliable, so I need not feel insecure.. And for so long people have said the cable don't matter, in this way or that way.. I guess that argument is settled too.. :)) THANK YOU!!
So from what I'm seeing, those Ibanez PA0105 for weight and the Providence V206 seem to offer the best results, overall. Of course, I can't find a supplier in the USA...
Exactly! It looks like EMG is the official distributor for Providence products in the US. I'm surprised that there are no cables even at the Ibanez USA website. Didn't see this coming. you know what, i'll address this question to Ibanez
Ok, here's what I found out. For some reason Ibanez really didn't bring any cables to the US market. More than that, the PA series is completely sold out in Europe and there's no more of it in stock. It may be coming back some time soon though
They'd be sold out in the States too! From the performance, to the size, those things are really awesome, Ibanez isnmissing out on easy money. Thanks for looking into them!
This is by far the best patch cable shootout there is! However, all the cables on the 'best' list are not easily available in the US, or have been discontinued. Ernie Ball and Mogami are the only ones I can find on GuitarCenter, Amazon, or Sweetwater (the three biggest guitar gear vendors in the US). I think it's time for a NEW shoot out!!!
Thanks. It took months to make the 79 cables video. If I ever try to do it again it's gonna be way harder. Now that brands are aware, and many of them are, some will never send me any cables. And it's generally hard to find any american and japanese patches here in Europe
Max Solo Music I can see how that’d be a pain. And I had no idea it took so long to put together. But I’m not surprised, it’s very well done and that must take a ton of time. If you ever do another one, I’ll buy $50 worth and send them your way!
It's been years ago. I believe both brands provided whatever was available at that time and I don't remember them having multiple different models listed online. Things might have changed dramatically since then. Even the models that look the same as those used in the video may nowadays be ordered by brands from other suppliers and be completely different inside
I have/use Monster Cable EVERYTHING from 2001, a lot of it disappeared during a rough time in my life. 4 Boss & a Morley Wha pedal also disappeared or were sold after a 10.5 year hiatus to start up again.
Never played through anything but Monster Cable which I know was quite expensive 22 years ago, so I'm sure there's some overly expensive replacement. Now if I need a cable my dad makes one for me out of decent instrument cable he has & gets some 90 right angle ends, solders them onto the cable & lets me know what the ends costs.
Very interesting and well-produced video. I run two pedalboards (one for line-in and the other for my amp's effects loop), so of course I've got some pretty long chains. That said, I especially enjoyed the "fan test" tip... Absolutely brilliant, thank you! 💯
Very thorough and useful. I’ve been looking into getting new patch cables and this was in valuable for seeing which ones to avoid or consider. I really liked the ergonomics of flat cables but it seems that they Can get more noise do to less isolation. I’m going to go back over the lists and determine what’s the best balance of profile, and flexibility versus noise. You just saved a lot of people I ton off frustrated purchasing and re-purchasing. Thanks!
Hey dude loved this video so much! Have you considered doing this same thing but with instrument cables? It'd be so cool to see how they compare in these tests.
Vow, this was amazing. Finally some measurement behind the claims. The downside is, I will have to sell a bunch of my EBS, Rockboard patch cables. But I am glad to do so because my pedalboard noise is a bit too much. Thank you, you put a lot of time, and even more important, knowledge, into this review.
This is very good, and very entertaining, but I see one small problem. At 14:15 you turn off the Small Stone to measure the noise picked up by the cable. But this is not a fair test because when the Small Stone is off its output impedance is much higher than it would be when on and in use. So you're not really measuring what you think. Better is to turn on the Small Stone, with its input connected to a passive guitar whose output volume is set to minimum. Otherwise, great job!
Thanks Ethan. Here's the thing, Small Stone has a true bypass switch and pedal's input jack is shortened to the ground when nothing is plugged into it. If I use another cable to connect a guitar, its properties may dramatically affect the outcome. But anyway, the Small Stone test is rather entertaining and demonstrates that in this context some cables are significantly different. I just watched your video on the Null Tester and it's awesome. I love stuff like that. And I can agree with the statement that if two things measure the same they certainly should sound the same!
This was a good video Max. It was very informative and an eye opener for sure. Those DiMarzio cables were quite a shocker to see in addition to the Lava cables.
hmm, I was researching electric wire to rebuild my car loom... glad I stumbled upon your video though. Great in depth testing.. cheers Now put that effort into making your own at home to add to the comparison, how cheap you can build it and how well it performs.
Thanks for your comparision! I would like to state that the capacity is only relevant for a cable that is put in a passive circuit (= not battery powered, e.g. directly from guitar to amp or from guitar to a passive volume pedal and then to amp). I you use active pickups (= battery powered) in a guitar, or if you use an impedance transformer with battery (bought or self build), or if you use a cable after an effect device that is powered by battery/power supply, you can ignore the capacity of the cable and focus on isolation against noise, stability, price. The capacity is only relevant because it has an effect on the very primitive electric circuit of the guitar, and this is dampening high frequencies; especially long cables can sound very dull und muffled. Oh, and in any Hifi audio circuits (for your loudspeakers or between your amp and other devices), the capacity is also irrelevant. Also, all claims the audio cables have a sound are a marketing lie and non-scientific fake, no person in the last 60 years was able to detect sound differences in hifi cables in a double blinded hearing test. Yes, there are quality differences, and the cable for loudspeakers must have a minimum diameter depending from the power output of the amp, but you can use a simple copper cable with the right minimum diameter, it will not get any better. Which is really important are high quality connectors, in my opinion Neutrik from Germany makes the best ones.
Das ist doch Unsinn, was du schreibst: Selbstverständlich sind bei unterschiedlichen Kabeln Klangunterschiede zu hören - und die können sehr stark sein.
GREAT TIMING! Just found this video and your channel and this is the info I needed right now. I just purchased my first analog synth, the Behringer Model D. I’ve been producing Drum & Bass and electronic music in Reason & Ableton for 17+ years but I’m totally new to physical analog gear. Since the Model D is semi-modular and I have plans to build DIY synth modules and purchase a Neutron very soon, I’ve been reading articles and asking for advice on quality yet inexpensive patch cables to purchase. I was leaning towards modular addict which had patch cables for $0.99 for 6” straight plugs and goes up about $0.05 per cables length thereafter. Then about $3.00 for starting price for stackable cables. No idea the actual brand because I just found the website yesterday. Let’s see how I feel about those after your video. Because the only other name I recognized was ‘Hosa’ from seeing them on Amazon for about $20 for 6 x 6” cables. Then ‘Tendrils’ were recommended to me as quality cables as well, but those are roughly $13 per cable... kind of expensive for me starting out, and in using these only for synths; no pedals for me. Cheers! -H.B.
Hi. I didn't have a chance to try any of their solderless cables, so I can't really tell. Although, considering the fact that soldered V206 are good I can assume when assembled correctly solderless version should be good as well. It's hard to believe but my best DIY cables use the cheapest plugs (all metal) and very cheap back in the days petro-sound cable. Must have been some chinese stuff. I don't know how but they managed to beat almost all commercially produced cables in terms of properties balance. I built then back in 2005 I guess and i'm still using them
Interesting video and I applaud your time and work. My only comment has nothing to do with the video itself but more with the "isolation noise" stuff. The diffusion and mechanical noises for most people aren't going to be a factor. Nobody (or at least any guitarist with some knowledge and common sense) would run a large power cable directly under or along side their cables and no one is going to have a fan (or mechanical noise) that close to their cables where it would actually pickup the noise. Most people in a live situation have their stuff mounted on pedalboards and there is nothing around close enough to cause that much interference. I've used most of the cables mentioned at one time or another including the EBS PG-10 Gold Flat cables which I see mentioned in another comment with absolutely no issues regarding noise of any kind. The bigger factor to me is capacitance and things like high end roll off, etc. Although some guys like Jimi Hendrix and Brian May used 100ft cables because they wanted that high end roll off...to each his own.
As far as I know, Ibanez discontinued those patches. At least they don't have them in stock in Europe. Providence is huge in Asia and Australia, so you can find it everywhere. For other countries check www.providence-ltd.com/distributor/overseas.html
@@MaxSoloMusic it seems like they're available again, at least in the UK. Thanks for your in depth review, you've saved me a fortune. Cheers www.amazon.co.uk/Ibanez-PA0105-PA0105-Cable/dp/B01BGSDQZA

Hey dude loved this video so much! Have you considered doing this same thing but with instrument cables? It'd be so cool to see how they compare in these tests.
This is a really awesome video, thank you for your work and passion!
this video deserves millions of views
Vow, this was amazing. Finally some measurement behind the claims. The downside is, I will have to sell a bunch of my EBS, Rockboard patch cables. But I am glad to do so because my pedalboard noise is a bit too much.
Thank you, you put a lot of time, and even more important, knowledge, into this review.
Glad it was helpful!
@@MaxSoloMusic Very good, thanks.
Fantastic review! Great job!
Thanks so much. I've been trying to sort through a lot of this. It really helps seeing all these different features examined.
This was a good video Max. It was very informative and an eye opener for sure. Those DiMarzio cables were quite a shocker to see in addition to the Lava cables.
Very interesting video. I make my own patch cables using Van Damme Pro instrument cable and pancake jacks.
Great job! Excellent work and very helpful. I've been making my own cable for quite some time and will use some your tests to check them out. Thanks!
This was an amazing test! Thanks so much for putting it together for the world, including me!
hmm, I was researching electric wire to rebuild my car loom... glad I stumbled upon your video though. Great in depth testing.. cheers
Now put that effort into making your own at home to add to the comparison, how cheap you can build it and how well it performs.
Best review for patch cables!!!
Thanks a lot! Really helpful test and one of the best reviews I've seen in some time!
Dude this has to be one of the greatest test for gear I've ever watched thank you so much
Incredible work lad! Without doubt the best review of gear I have ever seen! Simply outstanding 😎
A great work for humanity, man! :-) Thanks so much!!
Cheers!

Thank you for this great saga! You are really good at this! Very scientific and accurate! Appreciated.
a scientific approach that is very rare. excellent job.
Incredible video, thanks mannnn!!!
The amount of work you did in this video is amazing!
What about update video? 2021 a lot of new cables on the flat side, Ernie Ball flats or better shielded EBS PCF HF
Hi, What do you think about Providence V206 solder free kind? And what do you use for your own DIY cables ? amazing video!
I built then back in 2005 I guess and i'm still using them
Super helpful video, Max.
Extremely well done, thank YOU! Now, any plans for making one comparing (long) guitar cables? :) Cheers!
I would be very interested into knowing what long guitar cables are best? Or safe.
great research, i wish there were more people actually knowing what they do!
Sorry - I forgot to ask: Where can I purchase (either) Providence or Ibanez Cables - those 2 seem to be High-Quality and Rank Very High on All Tests ?
As far as I know, Ibanez discontinued those patches. At least they don't have them in stock in Europe. Providence is huge in Asia and Australia, so you can find it everywhere. For other countries check www.providence-ltd.com/distributor/overseas.html
@@MaxSoloMusic it seems like they're available again, at least in the UK. Thanks for your in depth review, you've saved me a fortune. Cheers www.amazon.co.uk/Ibanez-PA0105-PA0105-Cable/dp/B01BGSDQZA
This is a very useful video. I am going to need some new cables.
