  • We started getting our truck setup for offroad fun by installing a Bestop Supertop 2 . Now we can camp and sleep in the bed of our truck and still open it up to load big items like out motorcycles and quads.

    My Daughter and I installed on her 16 Colorado Z71 LB. We really like how the sides and back window can be removed and the Dogs can be tied in easily. Lots of fresh air and the Top is supper solid going down the freeway fully open.

    Thanks for the in-depth walkthrough. I was installing mine on my 2022 RST last night and idk if I'm an idiot or the instructions are subpar, but I had a helluva time and just went to bed annoyed, namely at the portion of install where you are installing the canopy skeleton and have to connect those 2 rails to the pins. The instructions made it seem too easy, but of course I hit a snag and it made the rest of the install a nightmare. After watching this, I feel more confident that I can knock this thing out after work just in time to travel this weekend with the family and pups.

      I’m actually really pleased with the seal. It has a gasket that runs along the top of the tailgate that seals off the window to the tailgate. It actually seals off better than my last cover which was a fiberglass shell on my last truck.

    Fabulous video!!! The engineering on this product is pretty amazing the way it all fits together so well. I have the Colorado short box. Only problem was Step 1, lol, the allen screw threads were not cut right and would not thread in, ugh!! I had to retap the holes and re thread the screws, 1/4 - 20 if anyone else needs to. After that I finished the project alone following included directions carefully and was reassured with your video. Now I'm going to try your brake light trick!! Again awesome video!!! Thank you so much :)

    • @RookieReloader
      @RookieReloader 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looks like I spoke too soon, again. I accidentally drilled into the zipper on the rear window while mounting the light. Very stupid move on my part. I may have to replace that rear window if I really want to remove the cap :( Additionally when you splice the wires into the brake light as suggested in the video the light will also operate and blink when you operate turn signal which I did not want. So I had to wire it as suggested in the instructions, under the rear driver side door sill. That required a lot fishing with the wire and I ended up drilling one hole in the base of the sill to send the wire through. The splicing clips do work but you really have to clamp them down tight tight. Good luck to all and I hope my mistakes can be of assistance to you :)

The instructions have it running to the front or under the rear passenger door but your route seems much easier! I have. This video was super helpful. Thank you for posting it. I even ran my brake like you and soldered it into the tail light. One question though, I noticed you didn’t show how to snap in the front panel. I’m finding that one is nearly impossible to close up. Is there a trick to it that you know?

    • @DoItYourselfDad
      @DoItYourselfDad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not the easiest for sure, the first time I did it I put the front long piece in place and didn't secure the corners until it was all secure. After a few days it stretches a bit and gets easier.

    • @christopherduff7436
      @christopherduff7436 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are still having issues, the front bar comes off just like the tailgate bar, one you remove it (it should be all the way out side of the truck box) you are supposed to slide the snap part into one end of the channel in the bar, and then slide the snap part all the way down the channel as you push the bar to the other side of your truck box. Once that’s done you just slide the bar back on the rails (like you would do to reinstall the back tailgate bar). That step was shown on page 15 on the manual for some minimal visual instructions. Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the video. Quick question - does the front (bulk head) rail seals pretty well? The front bed in Colorado is lower than the two sides, so just wondering if there is a gap between the front rail and the top of the bulkhead.

    • @DoItYourselfDad
      @DoItYourselfDad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The front rail has a thick flexible rubber seal that runs across it. I was worried about the same thing but it seals pretty well, even with the change in height. There are a lot of gaps around the tail gate (on the truck, not the topper). Since I’m in the desert a lot and worries about dust and sand I’m thinking about a gadget kit for the tail gate.

    Yeah just pray you don't have to fold one up in the winter time. They like to break and crack the windows. Now if desktop would actually tell you more information on their website about the differences between the models that would be great. What if you want this one that has the third brake light in it but you want windows and screens. There's no option for that there's no information about whether or not it's going to come with them or if you can order them or anything else. You basically just have to guess your way through there website.
    Now I'm on a side note, Best Stop & Shop or basically the same thing. And basically owned by the same parent company. Why one comes with removable windows and the other does not does not really make much sense to me. I guess it's a great way to Corner the market and eliminate any other competition?

      Man I have never dealt with something so aggravating. What side is left? What side is right? Got it backwards to start with. 6 hours later it looks great. If you notice your views went up like 1,000 lol. Had to watch over and over. Thanks for everything!

    @doityourselfdad You are adamant about getting pulled over without the CHMSL. Does that mean you have gotten pulled over for not having it before or do you at least know someone who has in California (I am not talking about having a broken light, but am talking about not having one at all)? I am asking because I plan on getting a Fas-Top that does not come with the CHMSL, but when I called the DMV they told me it is not a CA law to have one. I am aware about it being a Federal DOT regulation, but CA law enforcement is instructed based on CA laws, so I would doubt anyone would pull you over without some other reason. Again, it sounds like you have had experience and if so I am interested to hear it in order to help me make a more informed decision about adding one.

      Yup, was pulled over for not having one on my last truck. Wasn’t issued a citation, but it gave him cause to stop me.

    I would NOT recommend a Bestop. I always had problems with my Jeep tops. For some reason I decided to try one of these on my Tacoma. It was HORRIBLE! It ended up breaking during install and I had to send it back. I’m afraid I’m out the $700!!

    The quality has suffered in the past 2 years... I installed one on a toyota tacoma... And what a cheap piece of garbage it is... The thing is so flimsy and the frame is so cheap... The aluminum rails are cheap cheap... The quality is not there any more :(..... But your video was pretty good!!

    Next one will be the soft topper. The Best Top has problems with rivets. They break over time so you will need to drill them out and replace with bolts. Bullshit quality, but they will replace the parts while under warranty.

      Besttop bought soft topper a few months ago.

      While the softopper is a better made product their customer service is horrible. Have had both the Bestop and 3 softoppers. Will never buy another softopper due to their customer service manager not standing behind their product. Bestop does own Softopper now, but the Softopper is made very differently. All aluminum construction and better bow system. Rivets on the Bestop do rust out and break but are easily replaced with bolts. They absolutely stand behind their products though. Can't say the same for Softopper anymore.

    CA requires a third brake light on soft toppers? It amazes me voters vote for petty stuff like this.

      Almost every state does require them at this point, heck even Arizona and Texas do. The bigger question is, are you actually gunna get sited for it.

    Bestop's are for Chevy's and others. Softoppers are for Taco's because they're built for adventure and rugged terrain. Sorry, but Bestop has got waaaaaay to many qc issues and people notice.

      @@DoItYourselfDad I'm aware :) Wasn't entirely knocking Bestop, just sayin that I mostly see them on city trucks. Softoppers I usually see in the mountainsand, imo, the look, fit and finish stands out on a Taco. And the qc about Bestop's...that is a thing. Not for everyone though; sometimes they get it right.

      When I looked at the softtopper it wasn’t as sealed off to the bed as the Bestop. It had overhangs for rain but wasn’t really sealed well to keep dust out. We off-road in the desert, so I went with the one that would do the best job keeping the dust out.
