  • What's that? Trad? With Steve McClure? That can't be right? In this special episode of our monthly show, Niall and Steve head to North Wales to try out the best routes Snowdonia has to offer. Is climbing boring for Steve unless he's on an E9? Tune in to find out.

I really love Niall's way with words... 'The weight of the unknown' when talking about trad leading, and the brilliant 'Cherishing the faff" of course :-)

Nice one guys, good fun celebration of trad. I was quite mesmerised by the casually, yet artfully arranged guidebooks and cams on the table!

Ondra...completes Dawn Wall in 8 days...Reel Rock...onsight of a 5.15. Legacy or not, the torch has been passed whether you choose to let go or not is your choice.

Mark Hense Steve doesn't even want the torch. Ondra fights for it while Steve quietly hold the kindle to what keeps the torch going. Ondra is brilliant, Steve is a legend.

"A sport for all" (Steve McClure, 2019) - except unfortunately it's not.
Climbing (bar indoor bouldering which is becoming increasingly accessible) is a sport for a privileged few. There are so many barriers (although the predominant barriers are mostly monetary) to climbing that it's almost exclusively a white, middle-class sport. I have the privilege of being able to afford my own climbing equipment, and have friends in the same position meaning we are able to enjoy 'the great outdoors' and go climbing in our free time and I am truly grateful of this. Yet, there are many who simply don't have these opportunities. I think given the associated cots of climbing, it is unlikely to ever be a sport for all, but I do think that climbing (in the UK) needs to become more diverse before we can claim it is a "sport for all". Just my thoughts Steve/The BMC...
A great video nonetheless and always a fan of free climbing media! Keep crushing and keep the vids coming

I think you should donate your equipment and computer to this cause. This comment is so out of touch with reality that it's funny!

Couldn’t disagree with you more..I’m not rich, but I climb. Unfortunately nothing in this world is totally free. Indoor climbing is getting expensive but to me that’s not really what Climbing is about.

If you knew a bit about climbing and mountaineering you would know that a lot of climbers were (and are) not "white privileged middle-class " or whatever you want to call them. In fact a lot of the first ascents in the alps were made by poor people that didn't have enough money to get a decent meal !

@R(H)ogue I'd say you're half right. Gear is more affordable than ever, maybe not a trad rack, but you can get sport climbing gear for a reasonable cost. I think the main challenge is exposure to the outdoors. A lot of urban dwellers, regardless of income, will never find the stoke for climbing becasue they are never exposed to it. No one will invest in gear just to try it out, but if you're excited about it, the majority of folks CAN save up for a rope, harness, draws, and shoes. That's like $300ish. I applaud all the efforts of different organizations and pro climbers trying to get more "underprivileged" people out. It's the only way to find the stoke for it. Climbing is one of the few natural sports that practically everyone is relatively good at.
