Bill died the following year (1985), RIP Mr Peascod, you left behind a fantastic legacy - more than most of us.

Been to Lorton twice this year. Just done valley floor walks with my old folks. But in the past, leaving the Kirkstile Inn to scramble up the scree of Melbreak and looking down the valley there is a view to behold. I have walked up Buttermere fell and through Scrath Gap pass and down into the head of Ennerdale valley, camped overnight on the drumlins, likely the last haven of sanity in my world.

I’m shocked any of the pre-modern British climbers survived more than a few years. They’d say it’s poor form to fall and they’re right! Very skilled indeed! 😂 No wonder they love using two ropes, Thank You for posting this!

Films as beautifully designed as this one are like a very rare wild Animal. The quality sound production & the depth of editing depth all the consideration made create an experience, one more closely aligned to a Spiritual Event than any passive theater movie experience. These guys were innovating Climbing Technique & how to properly film it! My admiration & respect to both professions and thanks to you for sharing it here!
    Thank you,

This series on Border TV got me into climbing in 1986. I'd already done a bit of Lakeland scrambling but this had me going out straight away to buy a copy of Climber and find an instructor up there. He's since become a very good friend and climbing became a lifelong passion. It was particularly Bill's down-to-earth persona that appealed to me.

Bill sadly passed away while belaying don whillans on cloggy in 1985 of a heart attack. Don died a few month later from the same thing. Sad times

This is what it says on the tin climbing. Highly skilled brute force. Bloody well done to them both. Sad to hear Pete not with us now. Thanks for posting. Beautiful area.

Bill is a significant character in Australian rockclimbing history. He put up many bold first ascents on cliffs, often in remote settings with no chance of rescue. A real legend.

You know what the difference between English climbers of that time and USSR climbers??? USSR climbers was 18-27age and England climbers 45+.....you know why?, because only 1 percentage in USSR takes narcotics, and other Europeans and britishes young persons was hippie, they change climbing to narcos live!. That's why old school was climbing on the greasy rocks
