      They would weld a lifting lug on the new plate then get a crane to hoist it in place. then they tack on pieces of metal called dogs so they can wedge the steel in place and keep it from moving while they weld the new sheet around the edges.

      I dont know on this vessel but ships I've been on, more like 1000 foot plus container ships have between 1/2 and 3/4 inch plate at deck level depending on where on the ship it's at. I'd bet this is at least 1/2 inch plate at the aft end that high above the water. But I'm no navel engineer

    • @epistte
      @epistte 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MF11283 The hull plating is commonly 1/2" (12.5mm) steel but it looks thin when you see it in relation to a 300-meter ship.

    Is that in a shipyard or just dockside? If its dockside I wonder why they opted to do it there rather than sailing to a shipyard, it doesn't look punctuated, and seems like it would be a cheaper repair in a shipyard, once again if this is dockside

      I used to work for a maintenance company at NASCO (National Steel and Ship Building) in the San Diego area. Saw many military warships being built. Below the water line they had 3 to 4 or more inch thick hull plates. The wire feed welders were the size of a city buss pushing what looked like 1/4” wire. They would fill 3 to 4 inch gaps on those massive plates like a “Ordinary Joe” home welder would weld an 1/8 “ piece of metal.
