Back when I was around 18-19 I found myself having called my parents on the phone by accident in the middle of freaking out, peaking on four hits of blotter acid after a Sisters of Mercy show. Dad picked me up, brought me home, sat me down in front of the stereo and handed me a bamboo pipe. He put on SUNSHINE SUPERMAN and said "You really need to come down proper after a bad trip like that. Let's just listen a while." Gotta say, my dad surprised me that day.
      TL;dr: Yessir, 100% tested & proved.

Donovan was billed as the Scottish Dylan in the early on. He was a folk singer who became more psychedelic. This is sort of Donovan goes electric. He has song really strong tunes. He also duets with Alice Cooper on 'Billion Dollar Babies'.
You must do 'Sunshine Superman', 'Mellow Yellow', 'Colors' 'Jennifer Juniper', Hurdy Gurdy Man', and 'Catch the Wind'.
I think the vocal delivery really makes this song.

"When I look in my window / So many people to be" "when I look over my shoulder / What do you think I see / Some other cat looking over / His shoulder at me" are favorites of mine.

At 11:47 Alex say this: "The Beatles were doing cool shit in the 60's too". And Andy responds with: "Yeah - a little more bubble gummy - until it got to like - that little later point".
"Season of the Witch" came out on August 26th, 1966. The Beatles "Revolver" album came out three weeks before this Donovan song - on August 5th, 1966. Revolver had songs such as "Taxman", "Eleanor Rigby", "And Your Bird Can Sing", "I'm Only Sleeping", "Love You To", "Here, There and Everywhere", "For No One", "She Said She Said", "I Want to Tell You", "Got to Get You Into My Life" and "Tomorrow Never Knows" - that were all miles from being "bubble gummy". Their single "Paperback Writer"/"Rain" came out on May 30th 1966. And these following Beatles songs were released in 1965: "Yesterday", "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" and "I'm Down" from the summer of 1965. Then "Day Tripper", "We Can Work It Out", "Norwegian Wood", "Nowhere Man", "Think For Yourself", "The Word", "Girl", "I'm Looking Through You" and "In My Life" all from December 3rd, 1965. And there are Beatles songs from pre-1965... that are way more then mere "bubble gum".

@@simply_psi Page didn't play on "Hurdy Gurdy Man". That was Alan Parker. Page did play on "Sunshine Superman". On that song, though, the most prominent bass part (i.e., the instrument that opens the song) was a double bass, and that was played by Spike Heatley, one of two acoustic bassists that were used on Donovan songs throughout the sixties (the other being Alexis Korner's double bassist, Danny Thompson). Jones definitely played on "Hurdy Gurdy Man", a song that he also arranged for producer Mickie Most.
Page plays a very cool guitar solo on "Sunshine Superman", but the most distinctive guitar part on that song, the riff that includes a sort of bending bowed-saw sound that functions as the song's main hook, was played by another British session guitarist, Eric Ford. He achieved the effect by moving a DeArmond foot pedal rapidly between the bass and treble settings while sustaining the note.

Boys, if you like the Beatles, here's a story. Donovan was with the Beatles when they stayed at the Maharishi's in India studying meditation. Donovan is the guy who taught John Lennon the arpeggio pattern that John later used when they recorded "Dear Prudence" on the White Album.

A&A nails it again -- the chorus! Andy like a frog feeling the transition from verse to chorus -- exactly! I was 12 when this came out, loved it, but to this day could only remember the chorus -- love how the bass goes from its walking line to thumping ostinato in the chorus. This song was perfect in 1966 -- it captured the scene so perfectly, referring to so many things roaming around in those days -- it's both zeitgeist and meta-zeitgeist -- part of the spirit of the times and looking from the outside in at the spirit of the times -- White Rabbit, Strawberry Fields Forever, White Room, Whiter Shade of Pale, Mr. Soul, Dylan, T Rex, the Doors -- looking out the window, getting high, aching for meaning, and letting the trippy music pull you into your psychedelic cocoon.

Mmmmm this song is delicious! I was 6 yrs old when it came out. My cool older cousins played the album for me and i was hooked on the 60's psychedelic sound. Thanks, gents! Your analysis is pretty spot on. It's kinda like a meditation chant.

Donovan was so talented, and so creative, he taught both Georgs Harrison and Eric Clapton his fingers style on the guitar as neither could work out how he did it. He has great songs including Sunshine Superman, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Jennifer Juniper, Mellow Yellow, Barabajagal, Catch the Wind and the ridiculous but amusing Intergalactic Laxative.

Donovan is a chameleon and hes still making great tunes "I am Shaman" is most recent and solid. If you listened to his top 20 tunes they are all widely different. He was really into mantras so theres alot of repetition in single songs but alot of diversity in his albums as a whole. Hes one of the best all around singer songwriters that kind of got half forgotten over time after the hippie movement.

Donovan grows on you. I first heard him as a kid in the 60s, and as a teen in the 70s I was aware of him but he wasn't really my cuppa tea. However his stock has done nothing but rise steadily in my eyes, so that now, 50 years later, he's definitely an indispensable artist.

You haven’t really heard Donavan until you listen to either Hurdy Gurdy Man or Atlantis. Those came out towards the end of his major popularity arc and he was getting a little more experimental and electric. I think HG Man was his last major hit if I remember correctly. But I’ve slept a lot of nights since then so I could be wrong. I went to sleep a lot of nights listening to him back in the 60s when this stuff was just coming out.

There's a scene in the early Dylan documentary Don't Look Back where Dylan chews Donovan out. After getting along fine for most of the gathering, Dylan is a prick to him because he's pretty sure one of Donovan's friends threw a glass into the street from Dylan's hotel room. And everyone's drunk too. But you also get the sense -- even though everybody's drunk -- Dylan maybe saw him as just a pretty decent imitator. Nowadays everyone, including probably Dylan, would say Donovan's music endures and stands on its own. You can feel Dylan's influence in this song, but it's got this early psych quality combined with a pop economy. That's Donovan -- he was groovy weird and accessible and the same time in a way that The Beatles could be that Dylan never really was (but never really seemed to care to be either).
