Whoever posted this does not get the lyrics. They are really:
When I look out my window
    Many sights to see
And when I look in my window
So many different people to be
That it's strange, sure is strange
You've got to pick up every stitch

You've got to pick up every stitch, yeah

Oh no, must be the season of the witch
Must be the season of the witch, yeah
Must be the season of the witch
When I look over my shoulder
What do you think I see?
    Some other cat lookin' over
    His shoulder at me
And he's strange, sure, he's strange
You've got to pick up every stitch
(You've got to pick up every stitch)
You've got to pick up every stitch, yeah
(You've got to pick up every stitch)

(You've got to pick up every stitch)

I think the song was written in 1966. It’s basically about Donovan’s uneasiness with the direction of the culture in London. The police were becoming more aggressive in dealing with the youth, the counter culture and the anti was sentiment that was growing. At the same time people were starting to move from pot into harder drugs which brought in a violent criminal elements to the neighborhood. He just had a bad feeling about the near future.

    • @miltonbates6425
      @miltonbates6425 ปีที่แล้ว

Spot on. This song about Donovan's uneasiness with the socio-political climate of the time. The devolution of the hippie/beatnik youth culture into one infiltrated by agents of the establishment and also by violent socialists. "You've got to pick up every stitch" basically means that you cant miss a beat. You have to be on high alert and be aware of your surroundings at all times or else you may fall victim to such extremists.

Donovan had a strong Scottish accent. That might have sounded weird to you. Story is that he was sitting at a party and mindlessly strumming a guitar, and stumbled on a riff that he loved. He spent like 8 hours turning that riff into something and this is what resulted. It was covered by a ton of people and was part of the soundtrack for a movie by the same name. Donavan is the father of actor/musician Donovan Leitch and actress Ione Skye. He had a number of hits back in the day.

    • @antonytye3484

I kways felt he was putting on a posh English accent in this song though, especially when he says, when I look out of my window ect, the more spoken bits. Even though he was Scottish with a fair brogue.

Alan Parker is the one. Page might have played (possibly acoustic) at sessions for the Hurdy Gurdy Man album, but he does not play on the title song.

That album is still in the vinyl collection at my brother's house(I relinquished control, years ago).

Almost certainly it was his reflections on an acid trip he had experienced. Some paranoia, some surprise at what he was seeing around him, the "season of the witch" would have been the rarefied perceptual 'trip' that LSD had brought on. Donovan hit the music at the peak of LSD-influence psychedelic 'rock' at that time in England, thus the proliferation of psychedelic music throughout the period...

Back in the 60s he was sort of Britain’s answer to Bob Dylan but more mystical
some other truly great songs by Donovan are colours Catch the wind. mellow yellow and sunshine Superman. You might find them more accessible than season of the witch.
He is a giant of the 60s + music scene and much loved although I expect few young people know of him. It’s good to see that you are open-minded and willing to give him a chance
Here are the start lyrics of catch the wind. As an example of his brilliant songwriting
In the chilly hours and minutes
Of uncertainty, I want to be
In the warm hold of your loving mind
To feel you all around me
And to take your hand, along the sand
Ah, but I may as well try and catch the wind
PS when he burst upon the scene in England in 65 with catch the wind he was a sensation being a Brit pioneer of the hippie trippy scene we had heard and read about that was mostly in the states

Donovan is mostly overlooked today, but his catalog is extensive. He started as a folk singer and was often referred to as "The Scottish Dylan" but his music evolved and incorporates a lot of different genres. If you want to hear some of his vocal talent, I highly recommend a song called Henry Martin. No effects, just his voice as he tells an old pirate tale. Probably not many people have heard it, but it's an amazing song.

Donovan in his prime was very versatile vocally. On his popular rock songs such as Season of the Witch, Catch the Wind, and Sunshine Superman, he has quite a "rough around the edges" tone, but on other tracks like Wear Your Love Like Heaven, Celeste, Jennifer Juniper, Atlantis (and others) his voice is really, really smooth and sweet.
    Definitely worth exploring more y'all!
