The revelation of the Reapers, the loss of a friend, the stand off with wrex, the Virmire assault, the hold the line speech, the score. This was without a doubt the greatest hour and a half in Gaming history.
nah...i have heard much better speeches in other games, had more loss and cooler show offs in others. Sure Virmire is a well remembered mission and my favorite in ME and it is moving but i had more moving ones in Dragon Age - first at the Battle of Ostagar, then again in Denerim where all your friends say goodbye in case you never meet again...or in World of Warcraft with Prince Liam or the entire Wrathgate and LK campaign, or the show off in Warlords of Draenor or Guild Wars Prince Rurik (Prophecies) or the whole Kormir and sunspear thing...Virmire is good but i have seen better
I would've agreed with you if you said this was great but...THE greatest hour and a half? Like jesus christ dude, did you somehow avoid driving the mako?
The Mako driving section was only terrible if you did all the side missions leading up to this mission, plus unlike a lot of the side missions, it wasn't a big open mountainous wasteland for you to constantly climb. you were dodging shooting rolling hovering. hell my favorite part is taking the mako and crashing it into one of those big suckers to knock them over.
@Dosekk, The suicide mission had an entire game built up to it though and it needed to be epic in order to match this and the overall ending of the game. What makes the virmire mission so special to me is so out of left field that it made it all the more memorable.
"But you would undo my work. You would doom our entire civilisation to complete annihilation. An for that, you must die..." Saren, when this tune starts playing in the background. Goosebumps.
One can argue its gameplay, but for me Feros has a unique place amongst ME missions. Certainly a place worthy between Virmire, Suicide Mission, Rannoch (entire chain) and Citadel DLC
"That ship Sovereign? It's moving. I don't know what you did, but that thing just pulled a turn that'd shear any of our ships in half. It's coming your way and it's coming fast."
Love the escalation this track has from the rescue tali to virmire battle, feels fitting as the stakes are about to go up and your now in a warzone, not a gang war.
@@cybergames3436 Yeah! I dont know what it is about this theme, but it somehow makes the mission you're on feel extra important with high stakes. Absolutely one of the finest hours.
+Samanosuke Akechi This is my favorite track from ME1. I was rather annoyed when I discovered it was missing from the OST. "Our influence will stop Saren! In the battle today, we will hold the line!"
For me, the assault on Saren's base on Virmire was the single most memorable moment from ME1. Wrex and Tali at my side, cutting through Geth patrols with deadly precision and pressing deeper into enemy territory, Captain Kirrahe calmly directing his outgunned STG teams over the comm network, and this track on top of it all, pounding away over the sounds of frantic battle on every side. The buildup to this mission, along with the excellent pacing throughout it, really help to drive home what's at stake for the characters.
Oh hey, we went in with the same team. Tali had both item recovery skills at hard-tier (electronics and decoding, I think) plus hacking, which is always handy around the Geth, and Wrex had a personal stake.
My typical squads would be Wrex & Garrus, going full combat with biotic and tech abilities on the side, or Tali and Liara, going full biotic and full tech alongside a full-combat Soldier Shepard. However, for the aforementioned reasons, Wrex & Tali seemed ideal for Virmire.
"Sovereign: Rudimentary creatures of blood and flesh. You touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding. Squadmate: I don't think this is a VI... Sovereign: There is a realm of existence so far beyond your own you cannot even imagine it. I am beyond your comprehension. I am Sovereign!"
Wont lie when I first played Virmire I thought it was the final mission. I lost Wrex and then had to chose between Ash or Kaden. Then the fight with Saren. All this with this amazing track. This really was ME1 version of the suicide mission from ME2
Virmire, Rannoch and the Suicide Mission are the three highest points in the entire trilogy, with Virmire just barely edging out Tuchanka due to a Wham! factor.
Me thinks every single part of ME3 after Rannoch was rushed and gun decked together to meet an arbitrary release deadline. The whole coup, Thessia, Kai Leng and Vendetta arc looked like it could have been something better - but instead all we got was plot holes.
+BrainConqueror80 You are spot on. ME3 is a game that's so great up to a certain point, but then in the middle you can almost hear the devs going "oh fuck we're running out of time!" The writing in particular gets progressively worse the closer you get to the ending. Eg. "I was born in London" "Really? Like, you know you've told me that twice already right?"
+nkorslund The three biggest blunders they made were 1) Javik as DLC. The whole asari prothean history would have been done a lot better if he had been made essential. 2) Leviathan story arc as DLC. They should've played a more important role in dealing with the Catalyst. 3) Shepard's clone and the mirror fight against six varieties of Shepard being wasted in the Citadel DLC. Imagine how much better a showdown against six indoctrinated clones would have been as the final battle before accessing the catalyst.
I see your point. After the campaings in Tuchanka, Rannoch and Thessia... the ending was the lesser of my concerns... ME3 wasn't a perfect game, but it was a fun ride for me.
After Sovereign's speech and Jokers Comm, when this music came on you knew shit was real. All ME games for better or worse have epic moments that make them such loved games. ME 1-3 are fantastic games. Have to add but Rannoch theme is probably my favourite theme in the series now. Just love that piece so much
Yes, that was the biggest sense of dread I’ve ever felt in a video game. Sovereign’s dialogue blew my mind, legitimately scared the hell out of me thinking about the nature of these creatures, then this track plays and Joker tells you that Sovereign is on his way towards you…fuck. An absolute masterpiece.
I love this music. It's intense and fits the mission perfectly. It's exciting but also has a certain dread to it, as if to say, "Not everyone's coming out of this alive." :(
I love the sense of urgency this song has. It stresses how important this mission is, and is effective in leading up to one of the biggest choices in the entire series. Awesome.
"Somethings scrambled their targeting. We've got a shot! Alenko, take the heat off Mannovai!" This music and Captain Kirrahes comm chatter accompanying it, man Virmire was awesome. They nailed that "Assault" theme perfectly.
virmire is epic and badass on so many levels, from the confrontation with wrex, to being forced to choose who lives and who dies, to confronting saren himself, all of that is trumped by the encounter we have with sovereign. I remember the first time I ever played ME 1 I was completely blown away by virmire.
I love the part where you get finished talking to Sovereign and this tune kicks in. "That sip, Sovereign, just turned a pull that would sheer any of our ships in half. It's coming your way and it's coming hard."
I think the tune marks that from the beginning, but the Soevereign speech acts like a curveball, like: "You think you won anything.. Guess again."and then this tune again comes in and its like: "fuck!, this aint going well and its isn't over yet."
My Mass Effect cocktail: 1) The running up to the Virmire mission. The stakes are high and the battle will be long and hard. It will be the fight of our lives. 2) Visit Purgatory and dance like the biggest lunatic, all so you can forget for one night that it might be your last. 3) Step onto the Normandy and head for Virmire, get dropped in the assault tank and the mission is on. All ahead full!
One of the greatest if not the greatest moments in all of gaming. Such an epic battle with so many characters and such. Mass effect is one of my favorite games ever
I remember when this particular game was new, when Mass Effect was not a full blown series yet, when I got my hands on a demo disk that had a bunch of artwork, screenshots and gameplay footage from the game, among them a section of the Virmire mission, right under the first AA cannon, with this music in the background, the first ever piece of Mass Effect music that I heard, outside of the trailer at least. God damn, the memories. I was only 10 back then...
They should have had this compelling piece played in ME2 and ME3 during the gamplay/cutscene parts when you're pursuing someone or something-- it fits so well during these points of the game!
I've been gaming since the Atari and Coleco Vision days. Rarely has a game brought me to a point where I was simply overwhelmed with awesomeness. Music starts and Saren speaks,"...but you would undo my work..." right into the fight. Oh my God man. Simply one of the greatest moments in video game history. At least for me.
Clint Mansell actually only composed two tracks. The bulk of the soundtrack was composed by Sam Hullick (who contributed many tracks to the ME1 OST), Sascha Dikiciyan, Cris Velasco, and Christopher Lennertz (all worked on ME2 DLC tracks).
Mass Effect 1 has got to be my favorite video game of all time. I can replay it over and over again.
