- Going on a tour of some iconic “Star Trek” locations, all found in and around Los Angeles.
1) VASQUEZ ROCKS, a designated natural area that’s depicted various alien terrains in Star Trek, most notably in “Arena”.
2) BRONSON CAVES, near the Hollywood sign in Griffith park, which has been used many times in the Star Trek TV and movie series.
3) PARAMOUNT PICTURES STUDIOS, a portion of which was Desilu studios, where most of Star Trek has been filmed.

My dad Bobby Clark lives just a few miles from Vasquez rocks, he played them Gorn captain. I was fortunate enough to work on several productions at Vazquez rocks as well as Bronson cave when I work in the film industry. Very interesting video.

I was 16 when Star Trek was on at 8PM on Thursdays. It was the only show I was allowed to watch on a school night. I Loved every minute of it. Thanks for this behind the scene look.
When I was little I remember watching Star Trek voyager from 10pm to midnight every night on syfy during summer with my siblings. Some of my fondest memories ever. And we always had pizza bites XD. And then when my brother and sis saw the last episode with the borg queen I wasn’t there to see it for some reason but I remember being so sad and jealous that I didn’t see it lol
Me too! I was a bit younger and my Dad used to watch it. That’s how I discovered it and grew to love it.

Took my daughters to Vasquez Rocks county park several times when they were growing up.
They had fun visiting another planet!
I seem to remember that "The Zanti Misfits" episode of the 1963 Sci-Fi series "The Outer Limits" was also filmed there, at Vasquez Rocks.
Ah yes, the oversized Ants with a Face, yikes.
I remember at least 2 episodes of the Wild, Wild West being filmed here around the same time as well. It was a lot closer to L.A. than Zions Park, Bryce Canyon or Monument Valley that's for sure.
The short-lived Planet of The Apes T.V. series also did a great deal of filming at this location.
So nostalgic. It literally makes me ache inside hearing and seeing the original Star Trek episodes and seeing where and how they were made. It was just another day in the life of actors Shatner and Nimoy and Kelley 50+ years ago but it continues to live on inside the hearts and minds of millions upon millions of kids and young adults that watched it over and over and over back in the day. It really takes me back. It's like I'm actually sitting in my living room in front of the television, age 10, back in 1978. It's the closest thing to a time machine that we have. Thanks for making and posting this. Much appreciated.

Vasquez Rocks is marvelous. It took me years and years of hiking around to find the exact spot where Captain Kirk fires is primitive Cannon to incapacitate the Gorn. Hard to explain in a note but hunt around until you find it. It's helpful to take a photograph with you of that scene so you can compare it to the formations. By the way Vasquez Rocks is not a state park but a Los Angeles County Park. And let me say I very much enjoyed this video and thank you so much

Hearing that old Star Trek series music is so nostalgic for me. Just hearing it, takes me back to my youth. And of note, you mentioned Jeffrey Hunter, and as we all know or maybe not know, he played the original Captain Pike in the original pilot episode of Star Trek.
Vasquez was also used in the Outer Limits episode, "The Zanti Misfits". Also, "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey".
We went there last November. I dragged my wife and one cousin up there. As we were leaving, another of my cousins arrived just hoping to find us. It was a wonderful day for all of us.
I love hearing stories like that.
There are a couple of locations near a park in downtown LA. Across from the park, I think Olive Street, is the Biltmore now Millennium Biltmore hotel. The lobby is the lobby from The Omega Man. I was in there about 10 years after the film, and it looked exactly the same as in the movie. But it was being remodeled at the time, and has been remodeled again since then. It looks very little like it looked then. I was delivering to the manager, and his office was the same as in the movie where Heston finds the garbage with whisky, and sardine cans, and inside was a dead zombie at the desk. On the other side of the park, and down the street, I think Broadway, is the front of the theater from Blade Runner. Across from there is a building where the lobby is several floors of wrought iron balconies, stairs, and one of those cage elevators. You often see the place in film noir detective films, and was where the final scenes of Blade Runner were filmed. I was in there in the 19780s, and there was a classic 1940s style frosted colored half glass door on one of the offices for a "Private Eye" with actually a picture of an eye on the glass. The federal building is a location of the omega man where Heston is timing his run, and noting details of his search for the zombie hive. He shouts the zombie leader's name, Matthias, which echos through a montage of deserted LA locations. There is a building on Melrose called the pacific design center, name may have changed, it's nicknamed the blue whale because it's covered in blue glass. it has a lot of offices for modern furnishings like what you might see in Star Trek (TNG), and Star Wars (1, 2, 3). Of course there are the bridges over the Los Angeles "River". A lot of films shot there. Century Plaza in downtown Beverly Hills is where Conquest of the Planet of the Apes was filmed.
I look forward to doing an "Omega Man" video in the near future.
The first time I saw that rock scene used on TV was an episode of Bonanza when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I still remember the Bonanza episode which featured the Little Joe character and every time I see it in some other show I think of Bonanza. I'm 67 years old now.

"ARENA" My second favorite episode. Only surpassed by "THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE". I've been a trekie since the show debuted. I have an autographed photo of Bobby Clark (the actor that played the Gorn captain). Love this show!

Vasquez Rocks was also used in Picard for Raffi's home location. Right there in the parking lot at Vasquez Rocks was where the built the set for her house. Kinda cool!

FunFact - At 05:38 and 08:20 ... There's a cemetery behind the stage 9 lot where "The Greatest Show On Earth" train wreck scene was shot. Some of the monkeys got loose and went over the fence into the cemetery. For awhile, family and friends had monkeys attending the services for the deceased. The lot was also used for the granary scene in "The Ten Commandments" and a brief shot in "The War Of The Worlds" . Not sure ... but I think Vasquez rocks was also used for a matte painting shot at the beginning of "Dracula" (1931).

VASQUEZ ROCKS appears in a lot of television shows and commercials. I stopped by there on time to see what it looked like and sure enough there was a film crew out there. I recall seeing an episode of Voyager, can't remember which one, but it was shot at VASQUEZ ROCKS and during a commercial break a Toyota commercial came on that was shot at the same exact location.
Right you are, Voyager season 2 “initiations” was filmed there.

In the movie National Treasure, the characters chase through downtown ("Center City") Philadelphia. First they're at the Franklin Museum (21st and the Parkway), then they're going by Independence Hall (5th & Market), a distance well over a mile and would take 20 minutes minimum to reach, with the narrow streets, traffic lights etc. The movie makes it like it's a 5 minute difference. Anyone who works in Center City knows it's not a 5 minute trip!
@@dtvjho Hahaha...yeah, Clint Eastwood, in "Sudden Impact" shoots the bad guy off the Big Dipper roller coaster and he falls through the skylight of the merry-go-round, which is actuall about 75 yards down the boardwalk.
I shot a fashion shoot there in 1982... 2 assistants were Trekkies and played out many of those memorable scenes.... we had a blast ... thanks for sharing!

I'm so relieved that I found this type of again here on TH-cam. When I get to California and have expendable travel time I want to see the Vasquez Rocks area to see what was like when Star Trek went on location there. Our family went on weekend trips to Vasquez Rocks numerous times. We would laugh at the Star Trek scene filmed here. Good times.
A previous job took me to LA a few years back. I made sure that I visited Vasquez Rocks, specifically because of "The Arena", but those iconic rocks have appeared in a lot of other movies and TV series, such as Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, and the live-action Flintstones movie. It's the central feature of the park, so it's pretty easy to find once you arrive. Lovely terrain.
Grew up in SF Valley, visited Vasquez often. Place is awesome, this was back in 1985. Joshua Tree is an awesome place to visit as well.
As a kid I used to camp at Vasquez Rocks a lot. I climbed that angled rock many times.
Ahh Vasquez Rocks. Me and my grandpa walked that area quite a few times in the 80s. Lived in Canyon Country not too far from there (only a few miles). I do miss it out there.
I grew up in the Valley & was in the Boy Scouts in the 60's. We would occasionally go out to Vasquez Rocks for picnics. It brings back memories of all the wonderful outdoor events with the Boy Scouts.
I live in Lancaster and drive past Vasquez Rocks quite frequently on my way to and from civilization.

Thanks for the tour PROTOKINO. I enjoyed seeing where my favorite Star Trek series were shot. I have been living in New York most of my life after coming from Jamaica where I was born. I never went to California, but when traveling through New Mexico and Arizona on my way to Las Vegas via I-40 the first time, the scenary looked very much like some of the Westerns I watched as a kid. I loved it.
Do you like reggae? If yes then you and me are perhaps the only only deep into reggae and Star Trek!
This is fantastic. This area was in the western BONANZA in particular where Little Joe had a issue with the height of mountain and had to resolve his inner conflict.

Grew up in Burbank in the 50s-70s (when California was still paradise) and my dad would drag us out to the desert or countryside at these filming locations to camp and target shoot. Simi Valley was still walnut groves. Could see Warner Bros. studios from my high school second story (Burbank), and us kids would run to the windows when any loud filming began with explosions and other excitement going on. You could also get on a freeway and only see a few other cars. Driving to Disneyland was great because when you got there you were in the middle of an orange grove and got to park right in front of the gates. Most of the kids I went to school with had parents in "the business" and we got to hang out watching filming at the big studios, including Disney. I met many celebrities over the years and most were super nice people like James Garner, as well as a few who weren't, like Robert Wagner.

Some more history:
The corner of Melrose and Gower, where that Globe is, yes that was Desilu. Before that the "Gower strip" was RKO Radio Pictures, and that globe had a radio tower atop it. (image: photos.wikimapia.org/p/00/00/46/42/31_big.jpg ) Howard Hughes purchased the RKO strip, then in his decline he sold it to Desi and Lucy. When Gulf Western bought next-door Paramount in 1968, Lucy and Gulf Western agreed to add Desilu as well. The fence came down, and the entire lot became Paramount. This was around the time Herb Solow left TOS halfway through its third season. (Herb Solow, Inside Star Trek.)
At the time stages 30 and 31 were known as Desilu stages 8 and 9. Last I knew 9 houses the Dr. Phil Show. The Lucy Show (not I Love Lucy, which shot at what is now Sunset Gower Studios) filmed in stage 25 just south of 8 and 9. In the nineties, 25 housed Frasier.
The area of Paramount stage 8 and 9, (not to be confused with what was Desilu stage 9!) 17 and 18 became "Star Trek Row," with Next Gen shooting at 8 and 9, DS9 on 17 and 18, then Voyager on 8 and 9, and Enterprise on 17 and 18. 16 was often used as "Planet Hell," where the crew would beam down to strange new worlds. If you're a fan of the film Sunset Blvd., (and who isn't?) screenwriter Betty Schaefer's offices were in what would become Trek Row, and the area has changed very little since the 1950s.
Ray Bradbury spent considerable time on the lot, involved with films like It Came From Outer Space. He often visited his friend Ray Harryhausen there. Ray writes about life on the lot, (including the massive Hollywood Forever Cemetery just north of the Trek stages) in his book A Graveyard for Lunatics.

Thanks for the treasure trove of new info, Commando Solo! Yes, I was on the Paramount tour in 2016 and the Dr.Phil set was (I think) on stage 27. "This Is Us" house INT was set up in stage 30, we were lucky enough to sneak a peak.
@@Protokino Good to know. The sets do move around a bit, so it's hard to keep track. But yes, I've spent some time on all those stages. It's sad that there's never any trace remaining of what shot there, except the bronze plaques on the door.
I've actually climbed on these rocks. A lot of movie and tv productions filmed there over the years, especially westerns. A cool place to be.

Thanks for verifying my suspicion over the decades. I though the area where Arena was filmed was the location where other episodes were filmed.
This local was also home for the fort of the Bengal Lancers and a site for Pony Express & Stations. I played here as a kid in the 1950s. I especially liked the Lancer fort because it was an extensive set, though it was just a hollow skin. It remained there quite awhile after the show had had ceased production. We used to camp where the parking lot is. Those ground level hollows were where the Vasquez gang sheltered when they came up from Mexico to raid.
The Gorn sounds like an old man getting up in the morning.
I use to hike and prospect near Vasquez Rocks. Many people don’t realize that there are 1000 pounds of pure silver buried there somewhere. Teburcio (Vasques) stole two 500 pound bars in Mohave before he was captured down near La Brea Tar Pit. His hideout of coarse was Vasquez Rocks.

I've been to Vasquez Rocks several times. I've even worked there on the film "Bubble Boy" with Fabio and a young Jake Gyllenhaal. I've had the pleasure of working on the Paramount lot many times over the years. Good times.

2:03 Behind you is where the standing fort set was that was used as the destroyed Cestus III station in Arena. There is a shot with a foreground piece of debris put in the foreground to block the view of Highway 14. :)
DS9 also made use of Bronson Canyon more than once.

The rock outcrops from star trek are the fossilised remains of a giant tree . The Vasquez tree .
Definitely visit the Vasquez rocks, convenient to get to. I visited when they had a set there for Flintstones viva Rock Vegas movie. I was lucky enough to visit the deep space nine set before it was all torn down. I tried to get a piece of it but only succeeded in getting a red light bulb they were throwing away. Be careful climbing those rocks. When I visited someone fell 20 feet. I never heard what happened to them.

Yeah lmao please post a video of that little red light bulb with some commentary about when you got it. I’d watch that in a second - That’s how invested I am in Star Trek haha
@@Protokino DS9 was over, all the sets were being struck down. Literally all that was left was a short corridor and a cross corridor to that. So the tour guide said we could probably go in, which we did. The timing was just right. I have no idea where that bulb is, but I surely still have it.

My LA, Hollywood grandparents lived across the street on N Bronson Ave in their 1922 home... 'Capitol Melrose Studios' was but a few yards west & "Nickodell's Melrose Restaurant" was built into an RKO Gower Pictures exterior wall on this Historical 4-5 block section of Melrose Ave... 'Once upon a time in LA, Hollywood...

Thanks for this. All these places are somehow burned into the memory of a young child who discovered TOS in '70 and watched every bit of TREK since then. I always say Trek is actually more about the human condition; like where folks report for work every day, for example.
Filming locations are part of my childhood memory too, that's why I love visiting them.

I was trying to correlate the cemetery behind studio's 31 & 32 with the excellent UT channel 'Hollywood Graveyard'. Do you know which one it is? Maybe it is simply the 'Hollywood Forever' cemetery. That would make sense I suppose. Thanks.
