The quiet part is sooooo true! Like, you notice them start at the beginning, but it's lowkey and could borderline just be an everyday gripe. But then as the pressure builds, each of the conflicts grow and grow
People with Trypophobia more than likely lost their shit when Lily Carnation revealed its true form. Seeing that cute flower suddenly sprout countless holes in its smiling face is horrifying lmao. It comes out of nowhere with the dramatic tone shift and mood whiplash down to the scare cord that plays during it 😆
another detail i love is sanji’s bubbling anger when luffy is cheering on the chef taking everything luffy praises the chef for as an insult to his own skills, which is alarming because sanji isn’t usually self conscious about his skills as a chef and we know luffy would never doubt his skills either
Was there a reason they all behaved so differently? It's been some time since i watched the movie and all i remember was feeling turned off from it, because none of the characters behaved as they should.
Post Marineford? It's funny how after this movie where Luffy affirms the value of having his crew, all the internal crew conflicts (Water 7) and luffy losing his crew and spirit (Shaboady till Marineford) happened, albeit with no psychological horror of course.
It's gut wrenching and he's able to break Luffy's spirit because he does something no other one piece villain has done which is remove Luffy's crew because he understands the importance of the crew to luffy more then other one piece villains because he cares about his crew just like Luffy does
I think the reason why Nami slapping Usopp feels so unsettling is because of how such gags are usually portrayed for comedy. One Piece is great at giving visual cues for situations from the very beginning, so later on it is easy to distinguish when the situation is supposed to be funny and when it is not. In all the gags, Nami usually smacks people on the head with her face distorted in One Piece-typical style. The actions are quick, and feel like pure reaction rather than something deliberate. In the scene, however, the slap feels intentional. It is not just Nami reacting to something dumb Usopp said, this is her being deliberate and willing to hurt her crew mate, not once, but twice over. Same thing with Sanji and Zoro, it's this intent to hurt someone they consider a friend that creates a very foreboding and suspicious atmosphere.
Sound design helps to make the second slap extremely unnerving. If you listen to the clip Teee uses here, Nami audibly gasps right before slapping Usopp. That coupled with the un-cartoonish anger appearing on her face really ups the anxiety. Most of the time when Nami rages, she's angry or irritated, sure. But here, shes *upset* and genuinely hurt by Usopp's comment.
it also helps just how slient it all is. like there's no soundtrack for the scene or the scenes around it to show 'this is a wacky goofy moment' it just feels unsettling
And did you expect it not to? Anyone who's actual read past at least Alabasta can vouch that it's one of the greatest or at the very least very good, and Alabasta isn't even close to the end of the series
Something i really like about it too, is that when the flower dies, everyone in the island turns into a plant, but not in a animated/transition way, its 1 frame the character another frame the plant, and for me that was the peak.
I was dying laughing at that scene, it’s meant to be sad but the transition is so sudden it’s hilarious. My friend came into my dorm right at that part and was so confused when everyone turned into plants😂
Usopp's quip back at Nami actually hurt to watch. It's not something explored too deeply in the main story, but if I was Nami I would have some serious baggage about betraying my friends(even if I didn't think of them as friends at the time).
Omg, this is so true, the one piece films have limitless potential when it comes to genre , but the new films while fun always are stuck in a "hype box". They can't just focus on an interesting story or location, it's all about new lore or new strong characters and big fights. Baron Omatsuri is definitely my favorite one piece movies by a mile, and I'm so glad your spreading awareness
i feel like z, gold, and red adds a lot to the world building aspect of one piece (though non-canon), the backstory of the antagonists also was really good, it's only stampede that's just a hype train.
@@Moody.Smiruai yes your right those films are great! I guess what I meant was that these films feature returning characters and cameos, like the marine cameos in film Z and of course the red haired pirates, law and such in Red. Those are fun and do have a place in the story, I'm really just saying I miss how baron Omatsuri is very complete by itself to the point that you could watch it and really enjoy it without really being familiar with one piece. I've been able to just show non one piece fans film 6 and have them enjoy it much more than the more modern films I'm not trying to say those new films are bad, I love them a lot, I just think that the atmosphere, imagery and almost completely new disconnected world of film 6 isn't something that has been done in the other films, but I think they still could someday. I think the movies are an opportunity to really just go wild and completely do something unique with the our favorite straw hats, really break out of what we usually see with these movies, despite how much I love the ones we get. I hope that makes sense lol
@@SaiyoNot Oh know I get it. You really like Omatsuri since its its own little bubble with only original characters providing fresh and interesting experiences , on top of being more unconventional. I agree with you there , thats why I like movie 6 too although its not among my absolute favs
Ikr I just watched this film and it's immediately my favourite shonen anime film . Shonen films have very little plot and they all almost always start out and end the same way e.g event gets interrupted by cliche villains who have a grudge and get defeated by plot armor and 'friendship'. Ik this movie plays into friends and stuff but it does it so well that you actually feel for the red arrows captain also the atmosphere in this film man 💯
I've always believed that film six is Canon and Luffy just chooses not to tell anyone about it or if he does bring it up everybody thinks that it's just a dream/nightmare 🙃☠️
Yeah, also fits his character and his love of freedom. He chooses the love of his own crew by burdening the horrors they witnessed on that island on himself, so that his nakama can continue to live their lives free of that horrible knowledge. His smile towards the end of the movie almost looks as though he is grateful that they forgot. Kind of like how Zoro took on his captain's pain.
I think the same. It perfectly foreshadows the same theme we would see in further arcs like Long ring Island, Water 7/Enies Lobby and Shabody Archipielago.
Literally my favorite One Piece movie! I’m especially OBSESSED with the animation style; I really don’t think the horror element would have hit as hard using the normal animation style. Something about the minimalist drawings and soft colors really hits hard for the vibe of this movie.
Glad I not the only one that noticed it. This movie has such an odd art style, and the backgrounds are especially unnerving imo. Some of them straight up look like real locations that were then traced over or put through a filter. The scene where the Baron unveils the "shooting" ordeal literally uses a real sheet and it's super obvious. It reinforces this feeling that something is just wrong. Like it's some kind of strange dream or hallucination. It's like a liminal space. Actually, the whole thing has this feeling of some kind of lost media ova. Like this was something that was made during the era of underground anime films that never saw the light of day, and only existed as, sometimes disturbing, passion projects meant to be shared within small circles.
The reason the fights came about was so natural it could have happened in the actual series which made it even more disturbing; Zoro actually pushed Sanji away from him so they BOTH wouldn't get trapped TOGETHER in the same ring...but in doing so only Sanji got trapped in the ring, simultaneously making Sanji 'safe' and 'out of the way' in Zoro's eyes but also more 'in trouble' which made Sanji angry at being treated like he is the 'damsel in distress' out of the two of them again...quickly followed by Zoro saying he was in the way made Sanji furious. Zoro didn't pick up on hurting Sanji's feelings because he naturally just pushed Sanji out of the way so they both wouldn't be trapped together and make it awkward...but Sanji read it as Zoro sacrificing Sanji to the role of 'being caught' to make himself look better. Then Zoro kept pushing after the ordeal trying to make fun whilst Sanji was still angry and it made Sanji wan't to show off his skill with the Okonomiyaki; he wasn't actually looking for the girls to watch him, though it would have been a bonus for him, he was trying to prove himself to Zoro and get a pat on the back for pulling his weight and making a good dinner and a show... but Zoro just took a nap because Sanji had it handled and everyone was just hanging out waiting for dinner in his eyes. So Sanji got even more pissed that Zoro didn't even pay attention to Sanji OR the crew when he finished up dinner and noticed that almost half the crew was nowhere in sight...Zoro's job is to keep an eye on them when Sanji is busy and vice versa. So all trust just broke and Sanji told him not to eat his food; he didn't mean it...but I can tell you for a fact if the fight continued on in a normal One Piece episode they would yell at each other to go look for the others, fight the bad guys, and win, Zoro wouldn't have eaten any food at all until Sanji noticed, Sanji would have felt awful and made him his favorites or a request in return and he and Zoro would say sorry to each other and go back to normal...but this wasn't a normal episode and the crew were in real trouble. Nami and Usopp both wound up in a boat fire, Nami got the rescue pack with cups to put out the fire and when Usopp check the other pack the pack clung onto him, turned into a glider and sent him up. Nami has abandonment issues and Usopp just up and left...which is normal...she can handle it most of the time...but he then didn't immediately come back and pick her up to take her with him and, therefore, he broke her trust and instead of apologizing made fun of her and pretended like everything was normal. So in the end, everyone got upset and didn't have time to take a breather and recover and that was their downfall in the movie. These fights for these reasons have indeed happened many times now and the crew work together so well now that they can keep their emotions out of their working relationships breath to breath and have learned to circle back to being upset at a different time when they can be more rational and talk it all out.
Somehow, i think in the zoro sanji conflict, zoro tried to save himself instead of trying to save sanji, and to me, it felt like zoro was selfish and willingly sacrificed sanji. Zoro is my favorite character btw. Also, i believe that that lily carnation flower was also responsible for causing conflict among the crew mates. We see that whenever chooper and luffy punch the main body, it emits some kind of aura. Maybe that aura was surrounding the island and causing these daily minor conflicts of straw hates spiral out of control and turn big.
when that pirate shot the weird fungus plant, i was at first pretty jokingly impressed. Then all the moving and cheering residents of the island just turned back into dead plants with a single frame and a piano drop. And my face just flatlined.
What I like about Omatsuri is that he wasn’t just some generic villain that wanted to take over the world or something. He was a broken man desperately clinging onto his lost friends and doing whatever it took to keep them alive. This honestly set him apart from some of the canon villains, since a lot of the time, they had their own goals that the Strawhats happened to get in the way of, whereas here, Omatsuri actively lured them in with the express purpose of killing them
this movie gave me heavy Midsommar vibes. A place that's supposed to be a wonderful vacation turns to hell, friends begin turning on each other etc. This movie has an extra level of artistry that I feel truly elevates it. There was so much intention, so much emotion conveyed with just a single look from each character.
Me and my friend recently did a one piece movie marathon to prepare for film red We found most of the movies to be just alright, feeling like long one piece episodes at best, but then we got to THIS movie Immediately I was taken aback by the really interesting and completely different visuals this movie had, it was so different and unique compared to what we had seen before Then the unsettling nature of things started to unveil, seeing the straw hats fight in such a bitter and hateful way was so unnerving, it’s something I never thought I’d see to this extent in any one piece media. Nami and ussop s fight really stood out to me, they seem like such a great pair and there’s a level of trust between them that’s unique compared to the other strawhats, so seeing them be so genuinely upset was heart wrenching. Then the finale of this movie happened, the final act was just so visually terrifying yet amazing, I had forgotten I was watching a one piece movie entirely at that point! This move was immediately an A tier movie for me, it left me stunned compared to the movies that came before. while I do love a good amount of the one piece movies that came after this, nothing really every compared to the rawness I felt in this movie. I’m not a huge horror movie fan, but I will never forget this movies impact on me
Just the clip of Usopp and Nami fighting caused more fear and despair in me than every horror movie I watched during Halloween. Edit: "I hope you watch this movie" dude I am scared of this movie now
LOL I try not to watch it too much LMAO. When I'm re-watching the series, I usually rewatch the movies too... but even if I can watch any other OP movie when I feel like it, THIS ONE is the only one I don't look for if it's not "necessary", the memories are enough :')
I will always remember that comedy and horror are surprisingly good bedfellows. Because you can’t have too much of one or the other, or else it can grow stale. This isn’t necessarily a rule, but it is still fascinating how two completely different genres complement each other so well.
I feel like there's a One Piece Renaissance. Just everyone hearing "Final Saga" and one by one people around the globe are embarking on a journey to the New World that is One Piece. Movie 6 is the movie I enjoy sharing to people as an intro to One Piece. You get what everyone's quirks are (Just tilted to a more extreme manner) and you get something that isn't typical of a Shounen but fits within a One Piece world. Also you make really good in depth character world studies such as like an explanation as to why Law would be considered nerfed during the Dressrosa arc etc.
I'm pretty late here, but one of the moments that stood out the most to me was Sanji talking back, almost shouting, to Nami. Right after/before he blames Luffy for everything. Even when he is not simping for the ladies he is NEVER rude to them, and that was the cherry on top of unsettling for me
One thing to add, remember typical anime usually a market for young kids and young adult. Then introducing a movie genre like this for one piece is really unsettling and bizarre to digest. That it will stick into the mind of new generation to come. What a genius is for Masahiro Ito and especially Eiichiro Oda. One piece is for a lifetime.
@@jedexentry Oda can awnser the question for "what gerne does One Piece have?" With an proud "Yes!" If decited to dedicate His Life to one Story, why Not Put all gernes in it, Canon or Not. X3
Baron Omatsuri gave me such whiplash from all the fun goofy or typical shonen battle movies beforehand. Arguably the best One Piece movie next to Z. Hype that you're talking about it 🙏
Literally my favorite movie. As a kid watching all the movies, yeah the earlier ones really did just feel like longer episodes but this one had me hooked on for years! It was so well animated, the usual banter not being cut away from like the jokes they usually are got you concerened what was happening and the final confrontation was just *chefs kiss*
Chopper also goes tf off in this movie. He catches the Goldfish, nearly unravels the entire mystery, does not fight with any crewmembers, never loses faith that Luffy will save him, and goes down throwing HANDS with that big flower. Runner up for MVP.
I had no idea that Masahiro Ito was the writer when I watched the movie, but the main creature designer of Silent Hill being the writer sheds some light on why the story gets so dark
I saw the film when i was much younger. And the scene where the Strawhats are embodied in the flower is always back in my mind. This was such a terrifying film next to the other nice films i watched back then ^^' I thought this isnt a real OP film cause the artstyle and story, but it was a film i would never forget
I don't love the artstyle, but OH BOY does it suit the horror aspects of the film. Man, I love how much the fandom loves this film I loved your analysis on the building sense of dread!
What makes it more unsettling for me personally is Brief (mustache pirate guy). The whole scene with Luffy making the mustache pirate gesture was honestly so heartwarming, and for that moment to be followed up by complete despair was CRAZY. Not to mention the subtle implication of suicide shown to us. Luffy, after failing to save even one of his crew, lies there on a rock, completely still and unmoving, ready to take an arrow to the head. It's just so... unsettling.
Sanji getting jealous of someone else’s cooking was an abnormality too, since when Sanji has ever doubted his cooking skills to get jealous of some random chef? He looked like he’d kill somebody if Luffy wouldn’t stop cheering!
This one piece movie is Luffy's biggest nightmare given form and that's why it's horrifying he loses everyone and it's almost permanent I'm still terrified at the thought of that happening for real in Canon because I don't think Luffy could recover from losing his crew for good plus this could be considered canon because Luffy would never mention it because no one else remembers
Yeah, it was like Sabaody all over again... While we knew the strawhats were sent off elsewhere, Luffy didn't and he had that breakdown. (Which broke my own heart) Then I watched this movie and it broke my heart all over again, it really hurts to see Luffy like that but I do relate a lot with the fear of losing family and friends.
This is my favorite One Piece movie, the art style, the story, the way it plays out was so interesting and definitely very different from most of the others. I have always loved the relationships between all the Straw Hats and seeing it all go upside down in this movie was crazy to witness. Id love to see more like this in the future.
You're one of my newest favorite One Piece reviewer! I really love your sense of humor, editing, the sound choices and the topics you talk about. I've watched the last videos multiple times now just to catch all of your jokes and editing. I'm so glad that you' ve posted another video!
Another thing this movie did well is it took a villain that might otherwise be a forgettable mook villain, and then gave him such an intense personal parallel with Luffy that made him a very disturbing and pitiful reflection of the part of Luffy's character that has always shone the brightest. Baron has the same love for and dependance on his friends as Luffy, and in losing them he is twisted beyond comprehension into something that by the end seems less than human. And we are also given a glimpse of that same despair being something that Luffy could possibly be capable of in some form if he lost his crew in a similar way. Though the difference seems to be that Luffy would simply give up and waste away rather than become delusional and make a sus deal with a strange lovecraftian plant monster.
6:25 - 7:05 God the way u described the opening made it sound like i was about to listen to a one piece creepypasta or something 😭 not even in a bad way either, that is genuinely so eerie
13:23 - What gets me about the first slap is how devoid it is of the usual slapstick humor. Usopp's head jerks to the side from the strike and that's it. There's no exaggerated facial expressions or cartoonish injuries.
The thing that hurt me the most is when the Baron outright told Luffy "You are alone", which after Marineford we learned is his greatest fear, one he's had since he was a child. And even before heading towards that fight, when he left the mustache guy's refuge to go save his nakamas, he fcking FORGOT HIS STRAWHAT. That just gave me the chills 😨 And one more thing: the villain. I felt so incredibly sorry for that guy, even after everything he did, because I could feel the pain and despair he had gone through for so many years, clinging to that cursed flower just so he wouldn't loose his crew (although in his pain he couldn't see that those were not his real friends, that the flower was deceiving him). And the horror on their faces when they were forced to confront the reality of what they were, how they literally withered... goddamn, this movie is dark. I love it
One Piece and ANYTHING is a good mix. The Straw Hats playing baseball? Racing? Cooking? A slice-of-life movie? Drama? Horror? I could even see there being a “quality” ecchi part of Oda really wanted there to be. Probably some dark reason behind it all too. One Piece really is the best.😊 SO glad to see someone talk about this movie. Since it’s not available anywhere, it just doesn’t get all that much attention nowadays. I’m hoping that your video can spark some interest in it again. I’m surprised you never mentioned Mamoru Hosoda, the director. This was actually his first movie; he proceeded to follow it up with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, Mirai, and Belle. Pretty much everything he touches turns into a masterpiece. But yeah, the finale for this movie still haunts my dreams. Horrifying stuff.😣
ok now that i have watched all your one piece videos i am subscribing officially. you are literally putting into words all the brainworms i have had festering for the past few months since i binge read the entire manga and truly fell into the wormhole that is this series. you are doing god's work my friend and i thank you for putting some actually good one piece content on youtube
When I first watched this, at least 10 years ago, I wasn't too into one piece at the time, but I knew enough to understand the characters and such, and though I barely remembered exactly what happened before the climax, I remember being BLOWN AWAY. Especially the animation! *chefs kiss* Like, I knew the series was goofy but still very serious and multifaceted, but this was different! Having gotten into and almost caught up to One Piece this year, I really want to see all the movies, I've seen a few already and seeing RED tonight, but especially a rewatch of this!
I think the core message of the film really fits one piece in a way that it challenges its themes, mainly idea of friendship: luffy despite his best effort losses all his friends in this film, luffy who cares most about his friends is left alone to face isolation and hopelessness, its something that makes you question if you should go on, but you can go on, even if you are alone now you can make new friends as luffy does with the straglers on the island, you can't give up on it, thats why this film is so horrifying, its about death, and loneliness resulting from it. (side note i have much respect for brook for enduring 50 years of this)
Amazing video, thank you so much! "It seems One Piece and horror are a good mix": absolutely!! This is a movie that SCREAMS One Piece somehow, it's very impressive how they did this. It really feels like a set up to Thriller Bark, to the Summit War saga and to all the themes of the New World, especially the vibe we can find in Dressrosa and Whole Cake Island, where psychological horror can get pretty intense (Sugar, for example, is absolutely terrifying purely because she even exists). Amazing video, I love how One Piece completely took over your brain 😂
Thank you for talking about this movie !! It's still one of my favorite animated movie, ever. The progress of that feeling of dread isn't really noticeable until it's too late, and you realize your whole body is tense and your mouth gaping. It's absolutely gut-wrenching. The animation style is phenomenal too, and I think was a perfect decision as it fits the ambiance so well. Even after watching it a few times, it still makes me uneasy. I could talk about Movie 6 for hours honestly 😂 Really great video, so well-put together ! I hope some people will give it a try
There has never been a masterpiece like Movie 6 but i truly hope there will be another!! This movie, after ending, left me in pure dread. The what ifs started spiralling in my head. Like...what if this was the actual dynamic of the crew in a canon arc. What kinda implications would that carry. Knowing Sanji disrespected and distrusted his captain while also denying food to someone from his own crew. Knowing Nami actually held a grudge against someone who is her other half/sibling/partner in crime on the crew. Knowing Zoro lost, not only himself but the entire crew. Knowing Luffy Almost, wasn't able to save Everyone. Like damn!! After its ending i was almost like ive never felt before. I wanted more tho. Like i hate seeing my strawhats get hurt but i wanted more. I want more of the dark timeline kinda stories. oda has even drawn the dark timeline strawhats. any good writer has the perfect template. And with the story like one piece, its highly likely people would watch that!!
I spent an hour of my time tracking down a digital copy of this movie and god was it worth it. The animation style was perfect for this genre. It was like the Strawhats were the Strawhats, but not quite. Zoro looked off, Luffy felt stiff, Sanji just was slightly off kilter from his normal, softer character design. I don't think the psychological aspect of the film would've pulled through if the style was the same as the anime. Honestly Zoro and Sanji's fight scene is what drove home the point that something wasn't right. It absolutely killed me to watch it all happen. Absolutely horrific to watch my comfort characters go through that. I would definitely do it again. Thanks for the wonderful essay!
I honestly stopped early in the video to watch this movie with my friend. We were both pretty blown away by the build up and climax. Luffy was scary to see, full of arrows and hardly able to move with how much they pinned him. He was like a zombie, and I can only imagine what it was like for the Baron to watch him shamble towards him.
watching it rn and holy shit i never imagined the day that the strawhats would "hate" each other like this. what truly scared me was how quick they could give us hope and snatch it away just as fast.
luffy's happy in the end, even having to be living with those memories, because he kewn, from that time on, he would always be able to save his friends, nomather what.
Regarding the ending and Luffy being fine, I think its totally normal for him. As long as his family is safe after it all, he moves on because whatever was endangering them is either punched in the face really hard or gone. And since they dont remember a rather traumatizing moment that would make Luffy happier because he knows that would get to his family.
This is my favorite One Piece movie, even against the modern ones (though I’ve not actually gotten to see Film Red yet because of money being tight). I love the tone. I love the visuals. I love the creepiness. I just love it! Even made a friend who likes horror and only knows a little bit about One Piece watch it with me for my birthday one year. They enjoyed it enough to still “quote” it at me when I wear a hat. I really wish we could have the older movies released over here. It’d be the first anime movie I’d pay dvd release day price for. Recommend to anyone liking horror and anime if they know the basics of who the crew members are.
This is one of those treasures of one piece is in a writers/screenwriters/film makers must definitely to study about. If you want a unique idea to be easily hook viewers this is an example, Imagine a mere flower can be a psycho horror genre. Twist some plot like instead pirates, it can be stranded people/tourists/sailors/detouring route riders etc. Giving hallucination on the characters from a small to big moments then suck them dry. OMG wtf I'm even imagining things this could actually happened in real life in some place somewhere. Jeez what did you do to us Oda.
I think if someone asked me if i had seen this movie i wouldn't react in a "oh... that one.." type of way. I think i'd be more excited because this is a genuinely fascinating little movie and take on the one piece formula, and i rarely get to talk to anyone about it if ever. One Piece has never shied-away from disturbing themes, this movie simply took it and ran with it in a beautiful way. The testing of friendships between the crew was a really good touch plotwise and it's extremely tragic and heartbreaking to see them at each other's throats so quickly after knowing each other for a decent amount of time even at that point, prior to the timeskip, and even to Ussop's sentimental woes with the going merry on water 7. But we all know how that goes and it's canon, so a movie about the breaking of friendships isn't completely implausible i suppose, at least for Ussop. The arrow gimmick at the end seems both ridiculous, and yet extremely haunting and interesting at the same time. The idea the baron uses his very own despair and misery as a weapon, is an amazing addition and the imagery is incredible on that scene, with how the lighting and shading is and how dead Luffy looks as he's struck with his trillionth (morbillionth even) arrow. It's an incredibly depressing story and even though the baron is completely in the wrong i still find myself feeling for him and his situation, however psychotic from his trauma, loneliness, and influence from the lily incarnation he may be. However, that won't stop me from enjoying his further downfall for all the suffering he caused others as Luffy punches and kicks his smug teeth out!
I like how this movie takes the good parts of the infamous Long Ring Long Land arc but replaces the obnoxious characters with psychological nightmare fuel
This movie worked because it directly attacked the core of One Piece. One Piece has sad and traumatic back stories and story arcs, but that pain and trauma is muted even healed by dynamics and relationships of everyone. Imagine the horror story that could be built if the entire crew was suddenly overcome by their past trauma and pain...probably worse than this movie.
God, Movie 6 has been my fav for YEARS. The bootleg DVD was one of the best purchases my sibling made. It also started my joke of blaming movie director Mamoru Hosoda anytime something bad happens in a movie he directs.
I actually went and watched this movie last night because I came across your video a few days ago. I didn't go further than a couple of minutes into this because I didn't want to spoil myself. Good god, I'm glad i did.
When Luffy was fighting the boss of this movie he watched all of his friends disappear one after another and it breaks him, until he was told his friends are still alive and that he can save them. This movie came out before the defeat of the strawhats at sabaody archipelago. So if this movie was made canon luffy would have watched his friends die twice.
This movie’s start was so unsettling, it starts so, off, why is everything so quiet on the STRAW HAT’S ship, why is it shot like this, why are they all so… off. It instantly set the tone really well
Alright, well, watched the movie, watched the video. That was, like, the most Mamoru Hosoda a One Piece movie could possibly get, lol. I remember after seeing trailers for Summer Wars (and instantly recognizing the Digimon influence) trying to check out as much of his stuff as possible, but I couldn't find this movie at the time. Was finally able to check it off my list after almost 15 years. Loved that you could just feel Hosoda's fingerprints all over it - think I might have been too busy geeking out to fully embrace the horror aspects, but I was never a horror fan so that's probably for the best, lol. I appreciate this video for reminding me of its existence! Glad I got to finally see it and that it's being appreciated years later!
Fun fact: This movie was one of the first instances I got in contact with One Piece. Loved the series afterwards and didn’t miss a single Movie after that
The gaull of this movie to also have one of the most swaggiest art styles to ever be seen on one piece, I swear, that art style is the best the straw hats have looked in my opinion, and it fits so well with the dark theme of the film, I love it
I can definitely feel chills just watching this video, but I have a feeling this was something special that would struggle to be replicated. Also I think the visuals played a HUGE factor. Every clip other than the start and very end felt... Off. Like the Straw hats weren't in their own bodies. It kept making me feel like I was looking at different characters, kind of a Mandela effect
Dude, I wasn’t expecting to fall in love with this movie but I did. I’m not a really a huge one piece fan but watching it made me love this movie. I’m always gonna watch this movie in October. I just love how it just unfold with the story and then it gets so creepy, and it shows more truth about the island and then the characters almost literally about to get killed, but thank God they didn’t. i’m really sad It’s very underrated, but the animation is so gorgeous😩❤️
For anyone who’s curious. The movie is supposed to be like this. The crew turns on each other, and then they turn on Luffy. And then luffy loses all of them. It makes it all worse for him.
The unsettling feeling started when Zoro and Sanji shoved each other and Nami being bitter. I think it was after that that all the straw hats started acting uncharacteristically.
I unfortunately did take the bickering at face value when I watched this movie - genuinely laughing at what I thought were the straw hat shenanigans, even when Sanji told Zoro he couldn’t eat
I’m not one to normally comment, but watching this reminded me a of a fanfiction on Ao3 called what a mirror sees by blue_wonderer. It does an amazing sense of building dread and fear, and is very similar to movie 6. It has a fun creative take on what the enemy is and has fun eldritch undertones. if you like horror, and are okay with reading fanfiction, I highly recommend it. (it’s like 30k words, so you might need an hour or two to finish the story)
This animation is gorgeous and really works to add depth not only to the wrongness of the setting but in the off behavior of the crew. Most of the times Nami has hit one of the boys it's exaggerated, complete with goofy sound effects, slap stick through and through. You know she's not REALLY that mad, shes not ACTUALLY hurting them, she's just blowing off steam and the guys play along... but those slaps had genuine weight to them, a palpable anger she never expresses towards her friends. It really did give me an actual shiver
so glad someone else is giving this the recognition it deserves. It's so underated. Also, dunno if it's real, but Baron O is supposed to be Miyazaki from Ghibli. Apparently the director worked at studio Ghibli for a while and was going to direct Howl's Moving Castle. But ended up not, and later left due to "creative differences". I just think it's very funny and cool that the main villain is based off a crotchety old man XD
I love this one more and more as time goes on, early OP movies feel awkward and some later ones feel restricted by canon, this one was truly unique even compared to the weirdness of the manga
Only saw the first 2:58 and went right to watch the movie first. I finished it and it was beautiful, horrifyng and made feel way to anxious once the jokes were left behind as the movie kept progressing. 11/10 Thank you, I knew I could trust you that i would be a good movie c:
I’m so glad i found someone asking about this movie. Ive been watching the movies after catching up on the the show itself. I watched this movie earlier today and was absolutely in love. Psychological horror is one of my favorite genres so seeing a one piece movies with those sorta things was so refreshing. I also love how they felt with the process of grief and how people can react differently yo it.
This was the first One Piece movie I had ever watched, and I haven't seen all of them, but god if this didn't leave an impression on me. It popped up in my youtube recommendations when I was watching some other anime movie and I was curious. It was what got me to start One Piece, and when I saw the video title, I knew exactly what I was in for.
I CAN'T EVEN EXPLAIN HOW MUCH I LOVE YOUR ONE PIECE ANALYSIS VIDEOS like pls your humour and OMG they are so good I didn't see as good one piece videos on yt 💞💞💞💞❤️❤️❤️❤️
I remember seeing it. I was a child (a bit over 10, I think?) and I was with a friend of mine. We had finished watching all the One Piece episodes that were on our favorite streaming platform at that point, we had one week ahead of us, and we were bored. There were all the movies on that streaming service, so we decided to watch them. We watched the first ones ourselves before coming togther to watch the sixth one. Alone. In a caravan. Sleeping was hard that night.
This is my favorite One Piece movie!! I always recommend it, it's so different from the others, the visuals are amazing, and the conflict, oooh boiiii!!! It's like if Lovecraft loved one piece and wrote a movie. Thanks for talking about it, it doesn't receive as much love as it deserves
There's such an interesting concept inside this too. An unbreakable will like Luffy handling psychological horror. What would that do to him and how would that go down, I guess this film answers.
Oh my god. I just watched the Shining for the first time and was planning on rewatching One Piece movie 6 (my favorite). Perfect timing!!! Also if anyone has any suggestions for more phycological thrillers like this, Evangelion, Devilman, American Psycho, etc... please tell me I love these
I've not watched it in a long time, but I very much enjoyed the film Secret Window as a teenager. The original novella it's based on, "Secret Window, Secret Garden," is a Stephen King story, and it has a really different ending to the book, so if you decide you don't want to watch the film for whatever reason, the story (a part of the collection "Four Minutes Past Midnight") is also really good.
OMFG! Thank you SO much ! I have been trying to tell people that this movie is just a masterpiece ! The looks i get when i tell this is one of my all time favourite movie, omg ... They stop at " one piece " and " movie " but they miss the quality of the horror and the *absolute* genius of taking the core of one piece and tweak it juuuuust right to make it terrifying, GOD ! The chills i got when Sanji said Zoro didn't have the right to eat. The movie just drops that bomb and then silence. No awkward lines like " What's wrong with you today Sanji ? " Just ... Pure coldness... UGH ! I love this movie so fucking damn much.
One piece has always been horrific. When Arlong shot Nami's mom and the color fades to black and white and when Nami is forced to watch Luffy's motionless body as his head is smashed into a wall which I'm sure happened against multiple villains.
What makes this movie to “scary” is how fast and quiet all the conflicts came about.
@@notlisztening9821They were replaced by copies made of the strange creepy flower thing that controlled the island.
@@thegamesjournalist3702 are you sure?
I freaking love how Omatsuri has achieve something no other OP villain has ever done thus far, breaking Luffy’s spirit and drown him in despair
i mean sakazuki
Post Marineford? It's funny how after this movie where Luffy affirms the value of having his crew, all the internal crew conflicts (Water 7) and luffy losing his crew and spirit (Shaboady till Marineford) happened, albeit with no psychological horror of course.
It's gut wrenching and he's able to break Luffy's spirit because he does something no other one piece villain has done which is remove Luffy's crew because he understands the importance of the crew to luffy more then other one piece villains because he cares about his crew just like Luffy does
I want to see more of luffy’s despair
@@Nayshabaa sounds weird when you put it like that but I 100% agree
The animation of this movie… it is more horrifying than the movie
it also helps just how slient it all is. like there's no soundtrack for the scene or the scenes around it to show 'this is a wacky goofy moment' it just feels unsettling
Guys, it's too late. The One piece Abyss had completely consumed her
Well anyone who embarked on the journey of one piece either put on a tin foil hat or become the cult member. Its inevitable
It was to late the moment franky centaur was a shown
Me: *allready decorating the One Piece whole to welcome Melon* ...Huh? You wanna say a Welcome Party is to late at this point?? xox
Do you mean The Florian Triangle?
And did you expect it not to? Anyone who's actual read past at least Alabasta can vouch that it's one of the greatest or at the very least very good, and Alabasta isn't even close to the end of the series
Sanji not cooking for someone is the most bone chilling part
Something i really like about it too, is that when the flower dies, everyone in the island turns into a plant, but not in a animated/transition way, its 1 frame the character another frame the plant, and for me that was the peak.
I was dying laughing at that scene, it’s meant to be sad but the transition is so sudden it’s hilarious. My friend came into my dorm right at that part and was so confused when everyone turned into plants😂
@@grumpymonkeyenterprises6413 yeah for certain pov its kinda funny
That terrified me lol
Usopp's quip back at Nami actually hurt to watch. It's not something explored too deeply in the main story, but if I was Nami I would have some serious baggage about betraying my friends(even if I didn't think of them as friends at the time).
This movie is underrated. One of the rare instances where you actually feel anxious for the crew, due to facing a uknown villain.
Wha?? Film Z has the best story out of any One piece film and Red is really good with the emotional highs.
I've been able to just show non one piece fans film 6 and have them enjoy it much more than the more modern films
I'm not trying to say those new films are bad, I love them a lot, I just think that the atmosphere, imagery and almost completely new disconnected world of film 6 isn't something that has been done in the other films, but I think they still could someday.
It perfectly foreshadows the same theme we would see in further arcs like Long ring Island, Water 7/Enies Lobby and Shabody Archipielago.
thats actually pretty dark
This honestly set him apart from some of the canon villains, since a lot of the time, they had their own goals that the Strawhats happened to get in the way of, whereas here, Omatsuri actively lured them in with the express purpose of killing them
The fact that the movie was written by Masahiro Ito put EVERYTHING into perspective for me

this movie gave me heavy Midsommar vibes. A place that's supposed to be a wonderful vacation turns to hell, friends begin turning on each other etc. This movie has an extra level of artistry that I feel truly elevates it. There was so much intention, so much emotion conveyed with just a single look from each character.
Me and my friend recently did a one piece movie marathon to prepare for film red
We found most of the movies to be just alright, feeling like long one piece episodes at best, but then we got to THIS movie
Immediately I was taken aback by the really interesting and completely different visuals this movie had, it was so different and unique compared to what we had seen before
Then the unsettling nature of things started to unveil, seeing the straw hats fight in such a bitter and hateful way was so unnerving, it’s something I never thought I’d see to this extent in any one piece media.
I’m not a huge horror movie fan, but I will never forget this movies impact on me
i hate your profile picture lmao
Just the clip of Usopp and Nami fighting caused more fear and despair in me than every horror movie I watched during Halloween.
Edit: "I hope you watch this movie" dude I am scared of this movie now
Same! I yelled "stop fighting and you're supposed to be friends!"
Some really funny moments fron the entire one piece series comes in from the first quarter of the movie
Even when he is not simping for the ladies he is NEVER rude to them, and that was the cherry on top of unsettling for me
ah yes Movie 6. That movie and Undertale really know how to give you a phobia for small innocent looking flowers x.x
true geniues!

I had no idea that Masahiro Ito was the writer when I watched the movie, but the main creature designer of Silent Hill being the writer sheds some light on why the story gets so dark
I saw the film when i was much younger. And the scene where the Strawhats are embodied in the flower is always back in my mind.
This was such a terrifying film next to the other nice films i watched back then ^^'
I thought this isnt a real OP film cause the artstyle and story, but it was a film i would never forget
I don't love the artstyle, but OH BOY does it suit the horror aspects of the film. Man, I love how much the fandom loves this film
I loved your analysis on the building sense of dread!
It's just so... unsettling.
Almost no other anime movie has ever caught me as off guard as this one piece movie. :(
Sanji getting jealous of someone else’s cooking was an abnormality too, since when Sanji has ever doubted his cooking skills to get jealous of some random chef?
6:25 - 7:05
God the way u described the opening made it sound like i was about to listen to a one piece creepypasta or something 😭 not even in a bad way either, that is genuinely so eerie
That just gave me the chills 😨
And one more thing: the villain.
One Piece really is the best.😊
SO glad to see someone talk about this movie.
Horrifying stuff.😣
i've seen this movie only one time and more than 10+ years ago and i swear, that DAMN FLOWER
It's a NOODLE!
ok now that i have watched all your one piece videos i am subscribing officially. you are literally putting into words all the brainworms i have had festering for the past few months since i binge read the entire manga and truly fell into the wormhole that is this series. you are doing god's work my friend and i thank you for putting some actually good one piece content on youtube
I think the core message of the film really fits one piece in a way that it challenges its themes, mainly idea of friendship:
luffy despite his best effort losses all his friends in this film, luffy who cares most about his friends is left alone to face isolation and hopelessness,
its something that makes you question if you should go on,
but you can go on, even if you are alone now you can make new friends as luffy does with the straglers on the island,
you can't give up on it,
thats why this film is so horrifying,
its about death, and loneliness resulting from it.
One Piece and horror mixes well because you don't expect horror in One Piece
And I used to think Thrillerbark was dark enough for onepiece, this is a total game changer
watching it rn and holy shit i never imagined the day that the strawhats would "hate" each other like this.
what truly scared me was how quick they could give us hope and snatch it away just as fast.
luffy's happy in the end, even having to be living with those memories, because he kewn, from that time on, he would always be able to save his friends, nomather what.
I loved the animation style in this movie it was so noticeable and pleasant
This movie is everything. From the character design to the atmosphere, from the themes to its execution. Absolutely stunning
Such an insanely good movie the ending was like nothing I could have ever imagined for a one piece movie shit was crazy
I think i'd be more excited because this is a genuinely fascinating little movie and take on the one piece formula, and
i rarely get to talk to anyone about it if ever. One Piece has never shied-away from disturbing themes, this movie simply took it and ran with it in a beautiful way.
The testing of friendships between the crew was a really good touch plotwise and it's extremely tragic and heartbreaking to see them at each other's throats so quickly
after knowing each other for a decent amount of time even at that point, prior to the timeskip, and even to Ussop's sentimental woes with the going merry on water 7.
But we all know how that goes and it's canon, so a movie about the breaking of friendships isn't completely implausible i suppose, at least for Ussop.
The arrow gimmick at the end seems both ridiculous, and yet extremely haunting and interesting at the same time.
The idea the baron uses his very own despair and misery as a weapon, is an amazing addition and the imagery is incredible on that scene, with
how the lighting and shading is and how dead Luffy looks as he's struck with his trillionth (morbillionth even) arrow.
It's an incredibly depressing story and even though the baron is completely in the wrong i still find myself feeling for him and his situation, however
psychotic from his trauma, loneliness, and influence from the lily incarnation he may be.
It's worth noting that Luffy punched the Baron the exact sameway he punched the Celestial Douchebag on Sabaody. He was THAT big of a problem.
I'm VERY glad to see you being active on TH-cam again. Love your content!!
God, I only remembered the trauma this gave very tiny child me. I had forgotten how mind-blowingly beautiful it was. Now I have to go watch it again!
so glad someone else is giving this the recognition it deserves.
Thank you, I knew I could trust you that i would be a good movie c:
What would that do to him and how would that go down, I guess this film answers.
this movie esentialy forshadowed the posibility of actual increw infighting that we got in water 7 and whole cake island
I adore the little clips and memes you put in.
Great vid! Always love to see Movie 6 get the recognition it deserves.
Movie 6 is easily the best movie, from the tone and story to the off kilter animation style.
Anyone else pissed luffy’s technical nothing happened moment was non canon. I’m sorry but this movie is head canon for me. It’s so dam good.
One piece has always been horrific. When Arlong shot Nami's mom and the color fades to black and white and when Nami is forced to watch Luffy's motionless body as his head is smashed into a wall which I'm sure happened against multiple villains.
The Lily Carnation could straight up be a bloodborne boss. it would fit in perfectly.
