for away from home: disinfectant hand wipes, a fingernail clipper, nail file, chapstick /:)
Some hand cream would be treat, I like scented ones when knitting, crochet and sewing but an unscented for day time xxx
I always have a nail file
Always print my pattern 😊I like writing notes and POSSIBLE changes on it. If I don’t make the change, I erase the “thought” but more importantly, the paper travels with the project and if I’m in a place without internet or low battery on my phone, paper pattern to the rescue!!! It’s saved my many times
I bought crochet hooks to fix knitting stitches and then started crocheting 😂
I always have crochet hook too.

I mostly use my neck light for reading at night, but I would certainly grab it for working with dark yarn.
I have a small flat tin (it had mints in it), I glued a piece of thin, flat magnetic tape to the lid to hold needles, the odd long pin and stitch markers. The tin contains plastic stitch markers, small scissors, a small retractable tape measure and a length of waste yarn (in case I need to do a provisional cast on or to hold stitches) and a needle threader. I keep this little tin as a quick pickup and go for my sock knitting and it takes up very little room in my handbag. I just need to find a very short crochet hook for picking up dropped stitches.
For keeping stitches on hold I use a circular needle that snapped. As the circular needle I have snapped right at end of a needle there was plenty of cable. Just find a fat bead (or whatever takes your fancy, I have a butterfly bead) with a fairly small hole and slide it onto the cable then melt the end of the cable into a blob to keep the bead in place, wind an elastic band around the needle once the stitches are on hold to keep them in place.
I have also repaired a circular cord where it snapped by cleaning out the hole, cutting the end where it snapped and forcing it through the needle. At the other end with a cigarette lighter melt the cord and pull it back thru. Be careful not to pull thru while still melty soft or it can get on the threads if you are repairing adjustable needle like my hiya hiya which have snapped on me 3x now.
An emery board for nail or skin that snags yarn small tube or tin of hand balm

That tip of doing a provisional cast-on on a interchangeable cord sounds like a game-changer. I'm going to have to remember that.

Needle stoppers protect the needles from poking the project or going through the bag. Also stops the stitches from falling off.
I absolutely love my Susan Bates stitch fixers! I have them in all of my notions kits, and I keep one in my car for car knitting. They're great for cable needles too, and they're so handy for dropped stitches. I have them handy in my nightstand drawer too for when I'm knitting in bed.

Ah! Someone else who knits in the car and bed. Great. Knitters and crocheters are an odd bunch. We can spot/find a yarn shop from half a town away, promise ourselves we won’t buy any more yarn, after all we do have our own dragon’s hoard of beautiful yarn, buttons, patterns, needles, hooks, notions and sometimes potions, right? We don’t need any more do we? Unfortunately when a jewel of a yarn has our name on it we don’t even have to be persuaded to buy it, before we know it that jewel of a yarn has company and we don’t even feel guilty as we pay for it, head home and add it to our ever growing hoard.
Our Knit and Natter group is off on a trip to a very large yarn shop next month, it has even larger haberdashery (British style, I’m not sure if it means the same over the Pond) I will look for some of these notions , just to top it off there’s an excellent cafe to help us keep our strength up in case we should falter in our yarny acquisition endeavour. Ah bliss. 😂😁
When I used to teach knitting and crochet classes I always told people to include a nail file or emery board in their knitting bag. You can get a bunch of emery boards for cheap and cut them in half, wow even cheaper now! The reason is that even if you get your nails "done" if there's an irregular spot or snag on your nail your yarn will find it for you. lol
So my kit: snips, gauge/ruler combo, LOTS of stitch markers (locking work in both crochet and knitting while closed only work for knitting), crochet hook, point protector (caps), tapestry needle, waste yarn or stitch holders/barber cord, notepad/book&pencil and nail file
im a little old school and like to print my patterns out. and i always have a notebook and pencile for taking notes.
I just recently learned how to knit and had huge difficulties with the tension ( I am a passionate crocheter). One of this finger rings which hold the yarn did the trick. Could not do without.
I always learn something new watching your podcast and love it! I’d never heard of Wool needles with the little loop on the end. So nifty, and yes I have accidentally cut my yarn tail too short on occasion. I like to have a basic notions pouch for each yarn weight type of project in the project bag, just in case I want to take it on the go. I have a vintage Norwegian wood sewing box on legs next to my chair in the living room full of knitting supplies. I have a floor lamp goose neck strong led light there too.
I love my Addi Duett for picking up gusset stitches when making socks. I've never been able to pick them up with a knitting needle successfully, and using a crochet hook means having to transfer them to your needle. With the Duett, you can pick up the stitches and knit them off the other end! Something else I've discovered, the lightbulb stitch markers from Coco Knits fit through the lifeline hole in my ChiaGoo cords. In a pinch if I need an end stopper it works if you're careful.
Great tips! I'm always out of end stoppers when I need them so I'm going to see if any of my stitch markers might work for that.
oh glad to hear where to get the light bulb thingies, Norman Needles uses these and they look so elegant and less likely to get in the way.
The lightbulb stitch marker thru the hole thru the tightening hole on my interchangeable needle tips keeps stitches on the needles.

could you explain more I am not mechanical visualizer and I don't know what you mean. On my interchangeable, the holes are on the cord part so do you mean put thru holes on both ends of the cable? @@sharondreisbach1107

I love the Susan Bates stitch fixer for dropped stitches. Then I found the Addi Duetts which are like the Susan Bates but come in a number of different sizes. I knit a lot of socks and Addi has a size 2mm that is the perfect size for my sock knitting.occasionally I have a loose stitch several rows down and use the pointed end to adjust the loose stitch thru out that particular row.
I hadn't heard of that one - will have to check it out!
I have a main notions pouch that I keep with me most of the time but then I have others that are for long term projects. I knit thick socks that I sell to coworkers and SAR teammates so, since they are always on the needles, I keep everything I need to knit them in one bag. I keep the needles, needle keeper to protect the thin wood needles when they aren’t in use, and a tiny notions pouch with stitch markers, scissors, and a darning needle. Sometimes I’ll do another separate notions pouch for big projects like sweaters.
Laura Nelkin introduced readers to a stitch holder made of colorful, vinyl tubing. It has many uses.
I have a small plastic container a bit bigger than a deck of cards (approx 10cm X 7cm &1.5cm high).
I keep stitch markers (locking & the wee light bulb pins plus some small metal circle ones)
small sharp scissors
a shortened small crochet hook ( about 3mm & plastic so cut down to fit)
med size wool needle
a small ball flat cotton yarn (about as thick as 3-4 strands of embroidery floss) rolled up into a wee ball - for lifelines
wooden knitpro yarn needle (I use it as a cable needle)
a lantern moon circ needle key
a square chiagoo tape measure
My needles etc I keep together using a curly/coiled hair tie with some cut off (about 1cm) & my stitch markers are all kept on a wee circular loop that screws together at the end so I can open it to get the round markers off.
I find it has everything I need so I can just grab whatever WIP I'm making at the time & put that & my wee plastic container in my project bag & it's got everything I need!

I like to keep a stack of index cards on hand to write down the pattern of sets of rows that repeat. I use a separate card for each row, and I'll throw in a blank one at the end to tally my repeats if the pattern calls for it. There's usually enough room to add any notes, or I'll add an extra card to explain complicated stitches. I hold the cards together with a small binder clip, and they are easy to stick in a project bag on the go. I find this a lot easier to follow than most non-mosaic charts. I really love using them when working a brioche pattern.

Hi, I machine and hand knit and one of my essential items in my hand knitting bag is a latch hook. This is great for picking up dropped stitches and repairing pattern mistakes, I find it invaluable for both hand and machine knitting.
My notions bag contains the items you mentioned, but I also keep a small pad of post-it notes and a pen. I use them for tallying rows instead of writing on the pattern. As well, I keep a small tube of hand cream because my needles will be too slippery if my hands are dry

I use knit companion which I paid and makes me life so easy, never loose since I have it in my phone and all computer devices
I take notes on google agenda...

My knitting notebook is essential to me, I keep track of rounds, gauge information, make sure both sleeves are the same size, etc. Don't think I've done a project yet where I haven't used it!
I love my wool needles. I used to make a notions bag in snack sized Ziplocs for every project before I went digital with my patterns (I love knit companion!). Now I use a small tin with my basics: a few different types of stitch markers both open and locking, a small tape measure, one of those circular clover yarn cutters, a wool needle, one of the old fixit tools from Knitpicks, unwaxed dental floss (in case i need an impromptu stitch holder or lifeline). I also keep a small notebook with a pen holder that holds sticky notes just in case i need to write something down. I know I could type it into KC but sometimes I just need to write a number down quickly that I don't need to save forever.
Provisional cast on being left on circular needle chords is brilliant! Thank you for that idea!
It is such a great idea - but not my original idea! I heard it from someone else and have adopted it as my own! 😄
I always have a few spring-loaded drawstring locks on hand. They can be used like needle minders. Plus if I have a heavy project on circulars, I can slide the lock along the cord to help support the weight. That way I don't have to stop and move the stitches towards my left needle as much.
I keep my notions kit with me at all times, project bags change but the notions stay! I keep scissors, lightbulb stitch markers, progress stitch markers(only have a few and I will loose them elsewhere), needles, container of hand cream, a small ball of scrap yarn, measuring tape. I use a dice bag from Erin Lane Bags and it has a clip so if needed I can hang it on my project bag or my backpack to free up space.
And I consider my IPad as a notion as well because I use KnitCompanion! I love it and every project starts there even socks. I keep so many notes. And it’s great when I’m knitting lace.
Cord set by barber…I love these! Don’t need for all projects…but a good notion!

Agreed! Exactly what I use too. I love them being see-through, as i can pick out just the right stitch marker for my project, or other tiny item. And it's always my one little stitch corrector with a hook on one end and a knitting needle tip on the other, that I LOVE, that always falls to the bottom. I have to see to grab it all the time.
You can get clear, see-through pencil cases for 50p UK - pennies in $, in supermarkets which are great for notions. :)
Another notion I have is rubber finger tips.if I am using s sharp knitting needle. I also push on my needle tip. Scrap yarn to use as a a running marker when knitting on dpn's. Rubber finger tips are the type used for counting money. Very cost effective.
I print patterns if they are complicated ( and mark up the pattern with a pencil )otherwise use iBooks or TH-cam to follow along.
To answer your question about patterns, I keep all my patterns on the icloud so I can access them on ipad or iphone. I will open them in the files app on apple and use mark up to track rows, colour changes, add comments or make adjustments. This works so well for me because even if I take a break from a project for 6 months, I know exactly what I’m up to and what I’m doing.
Yes! A way to keep track of progress is so important - especially when you end up taking a break from a project and want to remember where you left off.
I just found your channel and I love the list because I just recently came back to try knitting stuff, this way I can think about what to acquire. I did some knitting when I was a child/early teens and then due to life I stopped. Now that I'm kind of retired and have time (and my cats are "trained" enough that they understand that when I say no it is time to stop) I am dabbling my fingers again on some knitting and some crochet. One thing I like to use when I have small tail ends is just to have piece of fishing line attached to the sewing needle with some tape, making that little loop like on those store bought ones. It is a temporary hack but works all the same. If you didn't already (I need to go through your older content later on), you could make a video with emergency hacks so we can use it in a pinch if something goes wrong or we don't have the thing we need at hand, or for someone like me that is just starting and don't have the things sorted/bought yet.

People mentioned this, but I find a good row-counter to be a necessity. This doesn't apply to everyone, but a dry-eye sufferer, I have eye drops in my notions bag. Loved this video, I hadn't heard about wool needles, but they would really come in handy.
I like to keep my mosted needed notions in each project bag. They are scissors, locking stitch markers, one of my fixing tools (double ended crochet hook, double ended latch hook or or the Susan Bates fix it tool..I have all 3) and a tapestry needle. I keep a small measuring tape in my sock project bags and a pen/notebook for counting rows or making notes in my large project bags.

My most important notions are stitch markers (lightbulb), a darning needle, mini scissors and a small crochet hook. I mostly use barber cord to put sleeve stitches on hold, but if I want to try on a sweater in progress, I will either extend the cable of my interchangeable needles or I will take a second cable needle with a long-ish cable and knit half a round, so I have the length of both cables at my disposal without having to move all the stitches to a cord, waste yarn or stitch holder cable.

In addition to the basics is a set of mini crochet hooks on a ring my friend gave me for fixing mistakes I have even used them as a cable needle
I love my notions! I have a small rectangular back with stitch markers, guage ruler, needles, snips little bit of extra yarn for life lines, fix-it tool, other crochet hooks and definitely a print-out of my pattern to keep track of rows and any special notes. I also like to bring 3 x 3 post-it notes and pens, mechanical pencil are a must too!

How do you stop ur fixed needle cords from unravelling into a mess?
As still new-ish to knitting I found the needle bags/pouches/roll-ups you can buy are ridiculously priced so I went looking for other ideas. I ended up buying a 6 hole, A6 sized soft cover binder on Temu & some zip closing 6 hole plastic pouches & I keep my interchangeable needles in that (sizes written on pouches in sharpie). I have A6 pouches, which are all labelled for each size, for my needles & A7 ones to hold my cables in their differing lengths. I also keep some cable ends/stoppers & cable keys in them as well.
I'm not sure how to/a better way to store my fixed needles & atm they're kinda tied together (the needles & the cord to stop it unravelling) with scrap yarn. But I'm thinking about getting a bigger A5 (or maybe A4?) binder & zip pouches for holding them. I'd love people to share their different ways of storing!

There are basic notions you need in general and then there are notions you may need depending on your project which is why I have a central notion repository that has everything I need for any kind of project and then I have a few notion containers depending on project and length of trip. Example…I only carry a cable need if I am doing cables, I only carry a measure tape if the pattern calls for me knit xx inches, I only carry the size of stitch markers that I need and some of those metal bulb ones because they have a ton of uses in a pinch. Crafting weekends and retreats I have my larger kit…it has a little of everything because you never know what someone might need.
Soft plastic "diaper pin" stitch markers are the best for crocheters like me. I don't usually use a lot of them, but I went through hundreds of them when I made a 10-stitch blanket several years ago. One kind of yarn needle I especially like is made by Susan Bates, and has an "eye" which extends almost the entire length of the needle, making them super-easy to thread. I have way too many small pairs of scissors, but my favorite is a pair of Fiskars spring-loaded snips (with very sharp blades) which I keep at the computer desk where I normally crochet.
I just discovered those Susan Bates needles with the large 'eye' and have some on the way right now!

I usually have enough crochet hooks in the sizes I usually use that I can just leave the hook in place on a WIP, but I have used waste yarn (or a stitch marker) to mark the last live stitch if I'm concerned about the hook slipping out.
In my notions kit, I have crochet hooks, safety pins, scissors, needles of various sizes, tape measure, stitch holders, nail clippers, pen, pencil, needle gauge, a teabag, puffer for asthma.
I don't know if anyone else does this but I knit in bed at night in the dark 😂 I've been having a hard time lately with health things and sometimes I get anxious in the night. I don't want a light on but I want something comforting and repetitive to keep my mind busy. I haven't dropped any stitches yet and the garment I'm knitting is just stocking stitch.
I don't know if this would help anyone else but it's been a game changer for me 🧶 xx
The row counter chain is a must. Get them from Twice Sheared Sheep.
I like to keep a tapestry needle, markers, dental floss : to cut yarn, make energy stick holder, marker or lifeline. The case is small and airport security friendly.
For notions I use a travel folded jewelry carrier. Little and larger zippered compartments keep everything in its place.

The needle protector tubes are awesome for my wood interchangeables. Also, for larger circular needles just use one per needle, this extends the range of needle sizes you can accommodate.

My husband bought me a antique yarn winder. I don't use it often because it takes 2 people to use it.
Pilot Frixion pen products are great for marking up patterns. Erasable for small amounts or use an iron to magically erase lots! Like you've never made marks! Also great for counted cross stitch charts. Great videos, thanks :-)

I just use a light bulb stitch marker to protect my needles. I put the marker through the hole that's meant to unwind the cable from needle and fasten both needles together. Never had a problem

Try Susan Bates finishing needles for weaving in ends. They are plastic, pointy on the ends with a big open middle and they are wonderful for catching any length yarn end. Plus they are pointy enough to pierce through the yarn to make it really stick. They have become my favorite needle for weaving in ends.
Another one I haven't tried! I'm going to have to get one of those!

Just to add, I have a small pad and pen and hand cream plus a nail file. I have a small tape measure, tapestry needles, stitch markers, small scissors, needle stoppers, barber cords in a jar, so probably more than I need.
Row counters for both flat and circular, and a lanyard style counter to tally chart repeats, or count multiple cable charts.
For too short tails I use an old hand sewing trick called skimming. I weave the opposite (eye) end of a long tapestry needle through my work following the path of a line of knitting, then thread my eye and pull through

I use Needles and crochet hooks with cables. I use these cables with the screw on ends to hold stiches.

I am pretty much the same as most for top 10
Comment : as far as life lines go, for socks and anything larger, I use what I think is called "chinese knotting cord" , (tie dyed variegated colors ) , the particular wgt I use is the .5 mm , so it can be used in my interchangeable life line holes. it is smooth, sturdy, even the stickiest of yarns will not grab hold of it , use the same lengths over and over again , (who knows why I thought I needed a spool of it.) In a pinch knotting a piece makes a great stitch marker.
I am a generic barber cord user , cut to what lengths I need .
I also use 3 ring plastic report sleeves , in a report cover , so I can use erasable markers to mark and yes, write , cross off , calculate

You do not need wool-needles, same thing can be achieved by making sort of a needle-threader using fishing line! Take some line (or a similar sturdy thin line or wire), tie a loop and add a bead at the knot end (the bead makes for easy pulling)! I use it all the time when I weave really short ends; you start putting the needle trough the fabric, stopping at the eye, then use the loop to pull the yarn through the eye.
Also great for when your yarn is too thick or cumbersome to thread normally!

@@jirafstudio you're absolutely right! A pack of floss is an essential in my knitting pouch. Like if I really had to I'd choose floss over stitch markers any day, it's so versatile!
Thinking about it one could even knit/crochet things out of floss in a pinch, like a tie or needle-holders.
The waxed type is very sturdy and doesn't fray as easily but the unwaxed is super smooth which I like when using it as a lifeline.
The tool I use in place of a cable needle is “Clover 3009 Needlecraft Bamboo Knitting Repair Hooks”. The bamboo is “sticky” so the stitches don’t slide off AND if you drop a stitch you have a crochet hook nearby 😊 no need to have multiple tools. The fewer tools the better. Less stuff to carry around, think about or look for!
I really should get a 'sticky' tool like that - my favorite cable needle is very slippery and I've lost my stitches more than a few times!
@Nerdy knitting I have so much in my bag I could be on Let’s make. Deal …. I use a makeup bag. I have a zillion stitch markers, about 5 different pairs of scissors, two sets of my favorite Tulip needles , stitch holders , 3 cases of tapestry needles pencils, pens , highlighters, knitting needle stoppers, cable holders , 3 different kinds of tape measure.and lotion .
I can’t keep all of my notions in one bag. Easy to forget it. I ended up taking small packs containing small scissors, stitch marker, a tapestry needed, and waste yarn. I’ve made up 2 or 3 and there is one in each of my ongoing projects.
Oh yes! I have band aid and my chain markers I made!

I knit alot of cables so my metal stitch holders I always need. Yes a notebook. I write in every project so if I want to make a pattern I have already used. Has all the changes I make
I'm probably a bigger cheapskate than anyone else here. I only have 3 notions that I "need" in my bag. Tapestry needles, stitch markers & a pair of embroidery needles. There's only 3 stitch markers & I made them all myself😂 I use my yarn tail to mark increases by weaving it across the work when I do an increase. If the tail isn't long enough I pull out a length of scrap yarn. If I cut my tail too short I weave the needle about halfway pull the yarn through the needle eye & then through the work. I never invested in cable needles either. Dpns that are at least one sz smaller work great too. If I need more stitch markers than usual I have some more sets I made with all my needles.
Susan Bates Handi-Tool is AWESOME! I've never let the 1st one go and bought 2 more just in case! Along with usual, variety of stitch markers, scissors, stitch holder, and a Nail File! (Mandatory for me). All stored in a clear vinyl make up case as they work the best for me. I can find anything in there, day or night. Nice video - BTW!

For stitches on hold, (and granted I haven’t made anything like sweaters, but for thumbs etc) I just use waste yarn and make a slip knot to hold the ends together
The slipknot is a good tip - I'm always worried the waste yarn will come out!
@Nerdy Knitting . Getting off subject but can you do a segment on transferring stitches so that they will be on the hook correctly. When I make a mistake and have to rip out rows I never seem to put the stitches on the needle correctly, I have to twist them as I go . I hope this makes sense .
What I usually do after ripping and getting things back on the needles is to 'tink' back one more row or round, one stitch at a time to make sure everything is on the needles correctly before I re-start.
I use the magnet on my phone cover to hold onto the metal light bulb stitch markers.

Also… where do all the stitch markers disappear to?? I have a main notions bag. It’s clear plastic so I can easily see what Im looking for. But, truth be told when I look in any project bag there seems to be an assortment of notions and odd things.
I know! I'm always losing stitch markers (just found one when I was sweeping the other day).
I've always used yarn scraps in other colours for stitch markers .... in socks (which I am addicted to knitting) , I purl one stitch every 10th row to make sure the feet are identical. No store bought stitch markers necessary!

Scissors
A darning needle
Tape measure
Lotion small tub
Paper clip or blocking pin to tighten interchangeable needles
Stitch markers
A few different size crochet hooks (I like to cast off with a crochet hook and do the 3 needle bind off)
I like to use the closed jump rings. They can be purchased by the thousands for just a few dollars. Plus, they come in so many different colors.

Those wool needles: I do the same thing with a regular tapestry needle. Just put the needle through where you want it, thread the needle, and pull it through

My must have not mentioned is handmade with love labels. My youngest is medically involved and is about to start chemo treatment. I knit on the go a lot and donate what I am making. I like to add that label. When I say on the go, I mean 6 hours away from home in another state. As for stitch markers, I use the most out of the box stitch markers. I use O rings from Harbor Freight. You get close to 400 for $10 in different sizes with a case for organizing.

add a binder clip for tinking. I use a 1.5 cm one for fingering weight wool. Clip it on a finger length from the rouge stitches, flip the wool over your finger and the stitches cooperate coming off one by one. Heavier wool will require a heavier clip but try this next time you need to back up a bunch of stitches. I also have a 120 cm 2 mm circular needle torecover from major frogs.

TIP: US paper dollar bills are exactly 6”. In a pinch any US paper bill can be used as a quick measuring device. I need to measure my credit card too! Lol

You an also put the needle in backwards. Instead of threading the tapestry needle first use the needle first from the end side then thread the needle, and pull it through.

I am a little over the top - live in fire country - CA- been evacuated 5 times.
I keep a full knitting set up in my car 24/7/365 and some of my top shelf yarns.
Also, since I always have a project or 3 in my carry bag @ car when I leave home, I take my knitting backpack @ interchangable sets and crochet hooks.
I would loose my mind, if I couldn't keep busy, if there was a crisis and I couldn't get home. We live in the foothills out of town
It has happened.
The Camp, Bear, Dixie Fires in Butte Co, CA taught me this lesson. Too many of my knitter friends lost EVERYTHING in the fires.
I just feel better having my supplies.
PS- I also have a little knitting care package in my purse at all times!
