I love old sludgy mastodon so much, but what they've become is something truly special

greatpower30 CTS mastodon is my favorite mastodon, don't get me wrong. I personally like heavier music and especially heavier, older mastodon. however, what they've become has expanded my taste and I feel a lot of soul with what they put out now. I'll always listen to the old stuff, but this new stuff is powerful in a different kinda way.
I just love mastodon ... Every album, every song they made, They're an amazing band. They sound good and they've never dissapointed me

I fucking love Troy's vocals on these last few albums man, they still have that hard hitting deep heavyness to them but they sound more clear and melodic now
2:40 to 3:20 is a 10/10 example of how when your band has an *exceptional* drummer who feels the song and elevates it... then comes out at the end of it solid. This band kicks ass
You can really hear the difference between Bill and Brent's styles between this and stuff of EoS... Bill, especially in as dark a place he was during the writing, was more heavy riffing and this is more melodic. With their powers combined you get the mighty Mastodon!

This is the one out of the four that was made recently. I believe the other 3 were written when Brent's wounds on that situation were more fresh. I suspect the other 3 songs to be more somber

Chris Plumb Nah. All these have been written by Brent completely. He made the songs as long ago as the OMRTS sessions.
Pretty sure this song is a leftover from EoS, and the other three are from OMRtS sessions. Brent definitely wrote the latter three, but I'm not sure about Toe to Toes.

I'm so sick of people arguing if music is good or not. It's a subjective thing. I think when a band grows and goes in different directions that it's great. This is one of the most talented and hard working bands out there right now. They have their own sound. Nobody sounds like mastodon. If you don't like it go listen to something else. Why argue and fall each other names. It's just music man. Enjoy it

I love Mastodon's old brutal 12/8 time days, but man when they want to make something beautiful and wonderful, almost like an auditory adventure they pull through so hard

What part of this reminds you of the classics? It's great, but it's nothing like remission or leviathan.
It doesn't remind me of their old stuff but it reminds me of Mastodon in general - it's got the underlying vibe that was missing on EoS. Proof that Brent is the key ingredient to making Mastodon great.
It's not quite as heavy but it reminds me of something that could have come out in between Blood Mountain and Crack The Skye. I hear a little bit of both of those in this.

So my life has hit bottom, I've talked to noone nor done anything for a couple months now, as I've been trying to kick addiction. I've had nothing even slighty to make me smile. But when I heard this, it gave me a sense of being alive for the first time in a while, it made me want to look my demons in the eye, go toe to toes, and kick their asses!!! Thank you Mastodon, your always there when I need!!!
One thing I wanna say; Mastodon are honest as ever, their attitudes are what make this band even better.
In a guitar clinic recently, Dirty B. Hindes said (to my memory) that he is a bedroom player, he loves creating emotion and changing peoples feelings through music and that he's still trying to understand music. From Call Of The Mastodon to Cold Dark Place EP there is so much emotion and dynamic.

The first minute of this song is the best damn minute of music I have heard in years. Those rifts in the begging is metal heaven.
God this band is too incredible. Every song. EVERY SONG! Is a god damn masterpiece. How do they do it man? I'm a musician, I play in a band. I listen to A LOT of bands and genres of music, but when I listen to Mastodon... I can honestly say that they are the only band that make me want to quit because I have accepted that I will never be able to do it as good as them. That's not a negative statement. They're just so fucking good. Can't wait to learn how to play this whole entire thing. FUCK.

The chicken picking meets the riffage of the beasts. Cold Dark Place has been long awaited and Toe to Toes I can't put my finger on how much it amazes me. It felt like 4 or 5 different changes, but they all come together. Kind of like a grim tale of different stories bound into one. Richey Beckett's beautiful artwork adds to that air and sound of this song it's so beautiful!

Mastodon is one of the few bands that have evolved in such a positive way. Granted, they sound more commercial in a sense but that just comes with the territory from more elaborate studio work and polishing. One thing is certain, they never betrayed their fans. I geek out harder on the earlier material, but the newer material is truly works of professional art.

Mastodon may be remembered as one of the most underrated bands ever. Excellent performers and I love their music.

Loving this more and more the more I listen. Brent has such a unique style. I think Mastodon has to be the best example of bringing in rockabilly and hillbilly sounds into metal and having it work well. Easily the best metal and most relevant band of this era in my humble opinion.

Chris Gebhardt there's a few different sounds I'm hearing. It's hard for me to explain. There's a couple songs from ocean machine that this reminds me of.
The opening riff and vocal style is the main cause though.
