This song helped me face my own emotions in a very needed way, and I can't thank you guys enough for this. Even writing this 2 years later, I still get a bit emotional when I watch it because everything about this song described how I felt at the time. Then new Mastodon album came out. The Hunter blew me away. Every day I put the volume knob a little higher.. and they pulled me through it.. I kid you not. Real story. Suffered from tinitus real bad and I don't say it is just "between the ears".. but really wanted to listen to Mastodon and make the effort + they pulled me through in an emotional way I guess..
Best Brent Hinds' guitar solo ever. Fucking hell, the intensity of this solo can be compared to a whole fucking mountain crying after a fire took away the forest that has been on it for ages. Yeah that's a very specific comparison.

You can feel the anguish underpinning the entire song, but I'm not going to lie, when the solo kicked in, I shed a couple tears. Whatever they went through must have been rough, but I'm glad they have such a love of music that they're still here today, despite everything that's happened to them. It very much sounds like country. Whoever dislikes it because it sounds like country is just a culturally bankrupt person though. Different tastes is fine but music is not as rigid as people who want it to fit in their little box would like. The mastodon guys play all sorts of different kinds of music. They’re inspirations range from heavy post metal titans neurosis to the greatest guitar player that ever lived Chet Atkins. This is a deep dark psychedelic country inspired croon that sounds different. It’s awesome and incredibly original. Which is what the naysayer here doesn’t like. It’s what most metal heads don’t like. Different. Rigid boxed in fools who just want everything to sound “heavy”. It’s no wonder bands like opeth bailed on the genre. THere’s no room for artistic expression.
Been jamming to Mastodon since I was a teenager and this song shows their work never ages. And plus this song help me cope with my emotional wound and thoughts of not wanting to live anymore. Keeping my emotions bottled deep down this song helps me feel heard.
Thinking back, they never had that pop tune staying power for me. They've all sort of become classics and there's so much material, you can album binge and it takes quite a while to get through their catalog. I love it.

I had that same feeling the first time I heard ''Chimes At Midnight''.It had that powerful and eerie ambiance that made me love so much Matt Uelmen's work!Funny enough,my first listen was with a friend during the Act 1 of Diablo 3 Reaper Of Souls.We were already fans of Mastodon,but that track was so magical and fited the mood so right that It's certainly became one of the more fond memories that I have.

When this came out I was separated from my wife, and not long after I was divorced. This EP is about a huge nasty breakup between Brent and his girlfriend. This was a great soundtrack to my sadness at the time.

Awesome! Its like they had all these songs, and they couldn't decide which direction to go to make them all work. So the majority threads ended up becoming Emperor of Sand, and the rest became Cold Dark Place. Both unique and Amazing! I smell the most incredible double length album coming to us in the future!

I love mastodon n seen then in 2003 when I was 17 at the wizard in hickory nc there where only 2 people other than some of my band mates n myself crazyness but remission had only been out a few months but in 2005-7 I created there future style and I love Brent Hines but he plays things I already came up with so depressing for me n my only copy left of my album is gone never be able to fill that hole I multitracked the whole thing n played all the instruments myself don't believe it that's ok I just been wanting to get that off my chest for a long time long live mastodon so happy to see them reach their pinnacle and break into the semi mainstream
Please check how Bran´s drumming reinforces always the melody and the vocals from 2:15 and to the end. This is one of the finest songs by Bran, who is known for playing so many notes.

Emperor of sand was about cancer this one was about Brents breakup.
Yeah, the wounds from family people dying was still fresh, and then came a split.
This was such a short album for the guys. Yet one of the most powerful. I'm not crying... you're crying...

Mastodon’s evolution has been quality through and through. More bands should take note that they can evolve while maintaining artistic integrity.

Awesome! Its like they had all these songs, and they couldn't decide which direction to go to make them all work. So the majority threads ended up becoming Emperor of Sand, and the rest became Cold Dark Place. Both unique and Amazing! I smell the most incredible double length album coming to us in the future!

I love mastodon n seen then in 2003 when I was 17 at the wizard in hickory nc there where only 2 people other than some of my band mates n myself crazyness but remission had only been out a few months but in 2005-7 I created there future style and I love Brent Hines but he plays things I already came up with so depressing for me n my only copy left of my album is gone never be able to fill that hole I multitracked the whole thing n played all the instruments myself don't believe it that's ok I just been wanting to get that off my chest for a long time long live mastodon so happy to see them reach their pinnacle and break into the semi mainstream
