I want to thank you for this video. I tied a few yesterday to fish in some high water today and every trout I caught was on this fly. Getting ready to tie a dozen or more.
Used this fly on the Rio grande in southern Colorado this week, water was high and muddy due to monsoon. Fished the pockets I could get to caught lots of good fish holding tight to the rocks, used size 10 streamer hook. Fish caught ranged from 6” to 18”. Thanks for the fly and all your info!!!
Great video love how simple the patern is I think people get to hung up on making a realistic fly to a fault some times thanks for sharing and really love the euro nymphing basics series
Thanks! I used to tie intricate stonefly patterns with lots of biots. To be honest, the sexi stone that is way easier to tie catches way more fish that my old pattern. Glad you're enjoying the Euro Series!
I’ve attempted no fewer than 6 different techniques for this fly and this is by far the easiest one to adjust the legs. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise
You always have great presentations. I'm a retired COP from Pa, and moved to northern SC. There aren't very many trout streams here until, you go north a bit. I have tied simple flies when fishing in Pa and I want to get back into it again. I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Thank You!
That's awesome! I hope you enjoy retirement! I have a bunch of fly tying videos on the channel! I have them in a playlist here if you're interested. th-cam.com/play/PLuLwf7ym7i7ZKJSrh7WP-pftvhmwIytMK.html There are currently 14 videos in there now but as I add fly tying videos on the channel I add them to this playlist.
Yes.. they are on the end of my line more than they're not. I did an update on this one too where I tie it heavier. At this point it is our most recent video.
Great video, I have learned so much from your videos that I can't thank you enough for all you are putting out there and helping all the beginners to this sport of fly fishing and fly tying!
Brian, really enjoy and learn from your in-depth commentary. the way you explain the reasoning behind the tie is great. it translates into spending more time on the water, which is what we're all about. thanks for the fine instruction! btw, we did great Thanksgiving morning down here in KY. now is our time to fish!
Thanks Mike! I'm glad to hear it! Sometimes I wonder if I talk too much :) But I want people to know why I do certain things or what has helped me in the past in certain situations. Thanks for following us and best of luck this season!
Congrats Mike! We just did the drawing and you won the 6 Sexi Stoneflies! Send me a private message on facebook or at bryan_spinner@yahoo.com with your address and I'll be sending them out shortly. We'll be officially announcing the drawing at the end of our next fly tying video (Foam Caddis) which I hope to have out in the next week. Thanks for following us!
Sweet! Good luck! I have a heavier version I tie as well with 2 tungsten bead for the times when you really need to get down. th-cam.com/video/IepkZymRBdU/w-d-xo.html
@@mrvyper413 LOL Yes! That is actually the next fly tying video I'm doing! I recorded it once already but the lighting wasn't right. I will be recording it again in the next week or so. That is my FAVORITE fly for small stream trout! We'll be doing a giveaway on that fly too.
Great video using an often forgotton tying material, but chenille still works great! I use it a lot to tie quicky stonefly nymphs very similar to your sexy stonefly. When i first started tying my own flies over 55 yeaes ago, I used olive green, dark brown and black chenille wound on a Mustad 3X long hook and lead wrap under body. I didn't use any tail, or legs or hackle. I just used chenille weapped over that lead under body. I caught tons of fish on this extremely simple stonefly, many were over 20 inches.
Start simple and learn the basics. Fish are often not that picky with nymphs. The big thing is learning to right proportions... people tend to over do it and put on too much material.
Hope you did well! If you want to dredge bottom try the Sexi Bomb I tie. It is basically the same tie with more weight. th-cam.com/video/IepkZymRBdU/w-d-xo.html
You're welcome! I tie them a bit heavier now too. Check out the Sexi Stonefly Bomb video from back in December. th-cam.com/video/IepkZymRBdU/w-d-xo.html
I’ve nymphed for many year but have always added weight to the line. After watching your euro nymphing videos and now your tying videos, I’m going to tie some up and give this a try! Thanks for your videos, they’re awesome!
That's great! Hopefully it works well for you. I would check out the Sexi Bomb video for when you need a lot of weight. It is this same fly but tied with a lot of weight.
You're very welcome! I'm planning on working on a few more fly tying videos in the next week or so to go along with the Euro Series and trickling them out over the next few months. Hope you enjoy!
Thanks... I only tie out of necessity. I honestly don't do it for fun at all. But if I want flies the way I want them... then I have to tie them myself.
Thanks for the video Brian. Always learn something, and I appreciate not only the detail you provide for what you do, but also the rationale for why you do it!
Capital District Fly Fishers offer a good beginner class. I don't do it for fun... although I do like it. I do it to create exactly what I want for specific conditions... like the foam caddis you used when we went (which is the next fly tying video by the way). Thanks for the invite to grafton too... I won't be able to make it out that weekend though.
Thanks.. check out our most recent video. I did an update on the Sexi Stonefly with how I tie it much heavier now. Makes a big difference in deeper or faster water. I'm also trying a new jig style hook for it but that is not in a video yet.
I need these in my life, last outing a couple days ago the flow was twice what it normally is on the neversink, realized I had to size up my flies and add tons of split shot to my drop shot rig, then caught some fish. All my flies in my boxes are 18 to 14!!! I need bigger flies so I started tying beadhead soft hackle hares ears in #8, simple beadhead stoneflies (a la jim misiura) and big #10 prince nymphs on long hooks. I want to add these to the mix, I'm realizing spring fishing means getting deep with larger, gaudier flies. Great instruction and good luck and stay healthy and safe everyone!
I actually started tying them heavier than in the video for the spring flows. I use a regular large brass bead, then .025 lead and then end it with a 1/8" tungsten bead... I call it the Sexi Bomb! It gets down big time!!! I've caught some nice ones with it this year. It has been so cold the trout have been on the bottom in the slowest water that is surrounded by fast water... Tricky to get to but rewarding when you get it in there!

Wow that “goldstocks” price tag !!! I miss that store , I wish it could of stuck around. Some of my most productive patterns are simple and easy. This one pattern I will be putting through the vise. Thank you
I definitely miss that store too! I showed up one day to buy supplies to find a sign on the door that they were done. So sad... And yes.. this is a fly to always have a bunch of!!!
East Rosebud Fly and tackle in Billings MT has a good supply of Sexi-Floss .. and no, they didn’t pay me to say that ! Great video … gonna tie some up and try it next week if the weather holds up ….
Thanks... I think Sexi Floss is easier to get these days compared to when I filmed this video. I still use the same packs I bought several years ago and even though I tie a ton of sexi stones I still have a bunch of sexi floss left! 😂 I just got some of the barred sexi floss from FlyFishFood too!

I'll definitely be doing ice fishing on Lake George this year. I did a decent amount last year but didn't do much recording. This year I'll be recording our adventures. I did put 2 clients on their first ever lakers through the ice last season which was really cool :) Thanks for watching and commenting! We'll be doing our drawing next week for the 6 Sexi Stoneflies!
They don't need to be pretty to be effective! A key with fly tying is doing correct proportions. Many people add too much material or length. Keep it simple. I've never fished the Farmington but they work really well in most waters and they catch way more big fish than your typical nymph. Good luck!
I tend to sort my flies in rows with different size beads. Heavier flies go to the top of the box and lighter flies toward the bottom or I'll have specific rows of heavier and lighter flies. I also have a scale I use to weigh my flies that is pretty cheap so if I ever got confused when at home I can weight them and sort them. This is the scale I use at home. amzn.to/3Geiy9j
YES! In fact I just bought new hooks solely for this purpose. I use a countersunk bead and push the lead up into the bead so nothing with the bead or how I tie it will change. The hooks I just bought are the Firehole 523 size 10. They are a 3XL barbless jig hook. I wanted a jig hook so the fly will drift more parallel in the water rather than vertical as it does on a regular nymph hook. And I really like barbless hooks because I feel they penetrate better.
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany I'll have to experiment with the bead. I've started liking the inverting type from Tactical Flyfisher. I think I want to be able to 'lollop' it about behind rocks rather than just drift it. I'll work on it. I'm probably going with a long shank Fulling Mill size 14 because the trout round these parts (Hay-on-Wye, Wales, UK) are small. Mind you, the barbel will snort this pattern up too I think.
The overall pattern is very similar. The different is really the leg material is sexi floss. It moves a little better and doesn't wear out like rubber. I also tie these really heavy but you can tie as heavy as you like. I often add a tungsten bead in the middle now too.
This is exactly why I tie my own flies... so I can make what I want. Any version you buy online will not be as heavy as I tie them. You might be able to find a similar version called the Pat's Rubber Leg Stonefly but it probably won't be very heavy. I was thinking about selling them at some point if I can get help tying them. We'll see.
I'm not sure of the actual diameter but I have used both small and medium chenille for this fly. It depends what kind of profile you want. Some of my rivers have really big bugs so the bigger is good and some rivers have smaller bugs so I go a little slimmer on those. Honestly I'm not sure it matters... they all seem to get eaten the same.
Excellent instructions. Do you weigh your flies? If so, at what weights do you typically tie these? I will try this pattern on the upper Yellowstone River and let you know how it does. Thanks for sharing.
I bought a scale just for weighing my flies actually! The regular sexi stone weights about .6 to .7 grams. The Sexi Stone Bomb version I tie is heavier at 1.0 to 1.05 grams.
So when you are euronymphing these, are you running 2-3x tippet to them? Or are you using 5x-6x since you may switch to smaller hook sizes while fishing?? Thanks!
I almost always use 5X tippet when euro nymphing. I bring 4x-6x but the 4x and 6x almost never get tied on. I find it is the right balance for me for in most situations.
Thanks for the comment. You know... my last name is Spinner... and I never fish spinner patterns LOL.. Ironic. I rarely fish dry fly anymore and it used to be all I fished. I used to fish a rusty spinner in the evenings and could usually find something willing to take it.
Pretty much. I use sexi floss for the legs instead of rubber. That stuff will never go bad like rubber can. I also tie it a lot heavier than most people. I did an update on this video recently where I show how I tie it now (Sexi Stone Bomb).
I can honestly barely get time to tie for myself these days. In fact I think my box is completely empty of Sexi Stones!! If it was just a couple flies I might be able to do a few extra while tying them for myself.
I want to thank you for this video. I tied a few yesterday to fish in some high water today and every trout I caught was on this fly. Getting ready to tie a dozen or more.
That's awesome!!! 😀
The peacock nymph has also caught a lot of fish for me

Would you fish a 10 for steelhead?
Sure... If it matches the bugs in the river, the steelhead will eat it!
Great videos. How about some spinner patterns.
Thanks for the comment. You know... my last name is Spinner... and I never fish spinner patterns LOL.. Ironic. I rarely fish dry fly anymore and it used to be all I fished. I used to fish a rusty spinner in the evenings and could usually find something willing to take it.
Love the sexy stone fly!!
Me too! 😛
You should try tying these patterns on a 1/32 or 1/16 oz jighead.
Put links to materials in the videos you use and shops you buy from.
I do in most of my fly tying videos. But I guess this one is older when I didn't do it. At some point I'll update it. Thanks!
Could use a lot of flies just starting out
I would like to try to tie this one
This is my go to fly for big trout! I swear all of my bigger trout come on these!
i find the rubber is a little buoyant. I guess it might be ok in some circumstances.
Yeah... the sexi floss is not as buoyant but I tie so much weight into these now that it probably doesn't matter anyway lol.
This is a pats rubberlegs, no?
Pretty much. I use sexi floss for the legs instead of rubber. That stuff will never go bad like rubber can. I also tie it a lot heavier than most people. I did an update on this video recently where I show how I tie it now (Sexi Stone Bomb).
4 years late do I still qualify? lol
Just a little. But I launched a new fly tying video tonight so you can take part in the giveaway on that one!
Would you be interested in tying some for money?
I can honestly barely get time to tie for myself these days. In fact I think my box is completely empty of Sexi Stones!! If it was just a couple flies I might be able to do a few extra while tying them for myself.
White Dog Outdoors man that’d be awesome! Love your videos and your work!!
9 minutes with only leD and tail.
