I am an MJ fan, I am not a Beyonce fan but I do give honor to whom honor is due. Michael Jackson is THE BLUEPRINT for performance excellence! He will forever be the greatest. Now, the reason why I give Beyonce her flowers is because whenever I watch her perform, she reminds me of the days when artistes left you breathless and in awe. They performed like their lives depended on it. They left it all on the stage. This is why we thought artistes, musicians and performers were gods back in the day. Beyonce pays homage to a time past gone. I will never put her on the same level as MJ, but she is definitely a reflection of that strain of greatness!

They both can be celebrated, but Jay-Z compared them both when he put MJ name in his mouth measuring Beyonce against him. He doesn't need a Coachella. The man could stand on the stage statue still for 5 minutes and have people screaming and passing out like flies. His songs are timeless. Michael SOLD OUT 50 Shows in ONE city within a few HOURS. Let that sink in for a minute. 50 shows in one city within a few hours. UNPRECEDENTED!! He was 50 at the time with no new album, no new project and going through one of the darkest times of his life with media manipulations and lies, fake allegations, extortion attempts, etc. Yet, this man SOLD OUT 50 shows. No OTHER ARTIST now or before have ever done that and no one ever will. Let’s be honest does ANYONE think that Beyoncé even at her peak now, could do anything like that? I’ll answer it for you, NO she couldn’t do it and nobody else in the world could do it. Not Janet, Not Adele, Not Taylor, Not Bruno, Not, Prince, Not Elvis, Not the Beatles! NO ONE. Just from looking at the rehearsal footage of This Is It, we already know Michael was going to set the world on fire, AGAIN. This is just a hypothetical question, if Michael and Beyonce were announcing concerts at the same time on the same day, whose concert do you think would sell out quicker? Whose concert would YOU attend, if you had a choice? Think about it and respond.

MJ is the standard. This is what happens when you are the standard. Every great performer since Thriller dropped (i.e. Janet, Usher, Bruno, Chris Brown) is compared and likened to MJ. His fans should take it as a compliment. Not like Bey is chopped liver. Lady has sold 100 mill records, made a billion in touring and won 28 Grammys. I see her more as Tina Turner 2.0. But definitely a MJ disciple as well. That said, MJ was not God same as B. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. The bullying is unnecessary from both sides. MJ legacy is forever cemented.

You hit the nail on the head about Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Prince, and Madonna emerging and being popular in a very special encapsulated time period. Whether you liked their music or not, you knew a lot of their catalogue, music videos, what they looked like, iconic moments, and current material. Because TV and Radio were the main ways to receive entertainment between the 80s through the early 2000s people were on the same page because there was a limited amount of stations. Now people may be familiar with a celebrity but not every demographic knows their music or watches the same programming. Things are catered to a niche audience because we all can watch different content at different times due to the internet, streaming services, and so many premium cable channels.
There’s a lot less crossover appeal than before. If you say “Thriller,” “The Bodyguard,” “Rhythm Nation,” “Purple Rain,” “Like a Virgin,” etc. people will know exactly the body of work you’re talking about. If you say “The Fame Monster,” a lot of people wouldn’t know that’s a Lady Gaga album from 2009, despite it selling 15 million copies worldwide. Their haven’t been many global classic albums, songs, or even TV shows to come out of the new millennium and stand the rest of time.
Additionally, MJ, Prince, Janet, Whitney, and Madonna were all considered legends at a pretty young age. That amount of impact is not seen today. For instance, I remember growing up and Janet Jackson was considered a legendary icon by the time “The Velvet Rope” (1997) and “All for You” (2001) were released when she was only in her early 30s. That group of artists crossed generational gaps. I remember my mom saying things like, “Michael Jackson changed music videos when I was a teenager, Whitney Houston came out my senior year of high school in ‘85, Janet and I were the same age and were both 19 when Control came out.” Fast forward to 1998/99 I was now growing up with their HBO/TV concerts, Whitney’s “My Love is Your Love” album, Janet’s “Velvet Rope,”etc. The amount of time that had passed was only 12-14 years but it seemed like they had been around for an eternity because the previous generation came up with their music and now their children were growing up like their music and they were still at their commercial peaks. The general public would never consider an artist that came out in 2008 “A Legend” because it’s still seen as too soon although that was now 13-14 years ago. Back in ‘99 Janet Jackson had been making music videos for about 12-13 years (Control was 1986), but she already had a generation of new people like Britney Spears, Aaliyah, Usher, and Christina Aguilera that grew up with her music since they were 4-6 years old. They would often say how influential and legendary she was. She and her peers (Whitney, Madonna, Michael, Prince, etc.) were viewed as a very seasoned artists by that time. The influence was evident. It was a very different time. We never see younger artists running up to Katy Perry or Bruno Mars saying “they grew up with them” or that “they’re legends.” Katy Perry and Bruno Mars are still seen as “the new generation” even though it’s been 12-13 years now. Artists like a Taylor Swift and Rihanna are seen as “the young people’s music.” If you go back and look at a Whitney concert you can see people of all different ages and races. A 70 year old white man and 7 year old Black girl can both go to a Whitney Houston concert in the 90s and enjoy. Not many artists can pull in those different demographics now.
In this time now I think Beyoncé comes the closest to that era of Michael, Whitney, Mdna, Prince, Janet, etc. out of all her peers. When she entered the industry in the late 90s it was very a different business. She survived a lot of changes.
Moreover, to your point made around (57:00) about the erasure of artists, I remember growing up Michael and Janet were seen by the media as being on the same level, until the Super Bowl incident in 2004. They slowly started to erase her legacy. Before that she was getting tribute after tribute and lifetime achievement awards (I.e. The 2001 MTV Icon show). When I was growing up I remember her being considered just as much of a legend as Michael and sometimes being more accepted than him because of his allegations. They co-existed as two separate iconic entities. I never remember people comparing them by the late 90s/early 2000s. It was a cool time to be a kid and see no matter your race and gender you could achieve any level of success. I was a really little kid back then so my perspective may differ from other peoples but this was a great breakdown video!

And this was a great break down response 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

    • @anthonym.5709
      @anthonym.5709 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@1mamakuh thank you!! Back in the day if you didn’t buy an artist’s album, once the songs left the radio or video rotation there was no way to access that particular. You wouldn’t hear that song for years to come. You had to wait for it to be played again, once it was old enough to be on the old school station, wait for a greatest hits release, or wait for a throwback video segment like “106 & Park” used to have. For instance, in 1999, when I was a very little kid, my mother was in her 30s. In 1986 she was 19 turning 20. When a Janet Jackson or Luther Vandross song from 1986 would play she would say stuff like “I haven’t heard this since I was young!” 12-13 years sounds like a short amount of time now but living back 1986 was already old school in the late 90s. Like Calvin said, it’s different when you live actually live it. Nowadays we can look up any song at anytime, so it doesn’t feel like as much time has passed. If you hear Nick Minaj “Superbass” from 11 years ago it doesn’t seem old school because you could TH-cam it anytime between 2011 and now. Back in the 90s, if you’re 33 and haven’t heard a song since you were 19 it seemed like a very long stretch of time. So much maturity can happen in those years. I also think that’s why artists from past generations careers seemed longer than today’s artist. In addition to time moving slower in the 80s and 90s, so much had changed by the late 1990s. The late 90s was dial up internet, CDs, Backstreet Boys vs. *NSYNC, Britney Spears, and TV shows like “Sex in the City”. The mid 80s was Vinyl albums, big hair, shoulder pads, dance-pop, and conservative shows like “The Cosby Show.” It was a different world (no pun intended). For an artist like Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson to survive all those changes and still be relevant was a remarkable achievement.
Additionally, in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s people had to find things to do in order to pass time, whereas now you can pass time by binge watching social media videos. Before we had to do puzzles, read books, go outside, or wait until something we liked came on TV. Just one year went by so slow. Furthermore, I remember in the late 90s and early 2000s people like Whitney Houston and Luther Vandross were considered to be the same level of legend as people like Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and Tina Turner. For example, in 2001 BET gave the 1st lifetime achievement award to Whitney Houston (she debuted in the 80s). James Brown (debuted in the 50s) and got his lifetime achievement award in 2003. That would never happen now. Taylor Swift would never get a lifetime achievement award before Prince lol. Moreover, as kids we didn’t even realize how much later the 80s stars came after the 50s, 60s, and 70s artists because by the turn of the millennium it was all considered classic music. Prince’s “Purple Rain” (1984) was just as much of a classic record as Aretha Franklin’s “RESPECT” (1967) by the new millennium. If you grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s you understand exactly what I mean. I hope this wasn’t too long 😂😂 but I enjoy the conversation around time periods and eras.

As soon as I got to campus the art professors who were male and white of course tried to get me to change my medium. Fortunately, my brother warned me about this because I was a good painter. Beyoncé is as close as we are going to get to someone who takes their craft and the art of performance as serious as Michael did because Beyoncé admired and studied Michael and comes from an era where you had to be a TRUE performer when you graced a stage. I also wanted to mention that I like how you said so much has been done on stage that it’s hard to impress audiences now. Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston winning 8 and 11 awards in one night was shocking because it was unheard of. Madonna and Janet Jackson having 17 & 18 consecutive top 10 hits (respectively) was mind boggling. Now if Taylor Swift or Drake breaks their record the shock value has been taken out of it. If Taylor Swift gets 19 consecutive top tens it’s not exciting because its not really new to us to be on that level anymore. If Drake has more billboard entries than any other artist it doesn’t move us. The world had never seen stars as big as the Madonna, Janet, Prince, MJ, Whitney, Michael Jordan, etc. generation. Something new and innovative would really have to hit the entertainment industry in order to shock and excite people again. That era can’t be duplicated, it’d have to be something new.

When he was ascending with his soul stuff, I think genuinely he had the backing of the industry especially the black musicians as they witnessin something special not seen before in previous era's.. the first black global superstar his music wouldnt be segregated (yes I know MTV) Micheal became the standard..Michaels influence has reached far and wide across the globe. Beyoncé can not perform on the level of Michael. For example Beyoncé can not break out of choreography and free style dance doing whatever she feels in the moment and then hop back into the choreography without missing a damn beat. Michael did. Yeah Coachella was great but if you compare what she did on stage with just her voice and body without including anything that was going on around her (the band, back up dancers, and the like) and compare that to ANY performance of Michael’s Bad Tour and you’ll see she doesn’t even come close. Michael has the world always and forever ♥
He is regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. Over a four-decade career, his contribution to the music, dance and fashion, along with his publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture. Every continent knows who MJ is. Jackson influenced many artists ( including Beyonce) across many music genres; through stage and video performances, he popularized complicated dance moves such as the moonwalk, (which he thanked Jeffrey Daniels) to which he gave the name, as well as the robot. He is the most awarded music artist in history. Period 🐐

Thank you so much Calvin for doing this video because people on yt are notorious for doing this between Beyoncé and not only MJ but almost every other successful mainstream black female singer who came out in the last 20 - 30 years and that includes Kelly and Michelle. I am so glad someone finally made this video because it is ridiculous to say that because Beyoncé is considered a “great” artist, no other black female singer, (or MJ for that matter) can be considered great, she’s the only one. When that is ridiculous ofc there are many great artists from the last 40 years and you don’t have to compare them or downplay them to uplift Beyoncé. She can stand on her own just as other artists can. No one now is saying Patti Labelle is trash because Aretha is great. Nobody is saying Chaka Khan is terrible because Anita Baker is great. No one is saying forget Dionne Warwick because of Gladys Knight. We consider them all great. It should be the same today with past and current artisits.

Everyone seems obsessed with toppling his legacy. According to the interwebs, within this year alone, MJ’s been “surpassed” by Drake, Chris Brown, The Weeknd, and Beyoncé. I wish everyone would leave MJ alone and let their faves be great on their own merit. Also it’s extra interesting since MJ is considered an influence to all of them and yet their fans just do not respect it. The only people who can compare to Micheal Jackson is his family his bloodline because they all actually sound similar to each other and they each have their own unique style. Jermaine and Janet and his nephew Austin share similar vocal styles. So if you must compare Michael to anyone it has to be a member of his family. They are just ridiculously talented. And when he performed with his brothers it was just pure magic seeing them all together. Beyonce is beautiful and amazing I love her music. But she still has a way to go. The Jackson family has four decades in the industry. With Michael you can pick which decade you prefer. Same with Janet. Do want actresses Janet or do you want singer dancer Janet. Beyonce only has one full decade. Whilst Michael has 4 and so does Janet. They been out before she was born that's a whole lot of time to fill up.

No one writes a article on music and say that Justin Timberlake is better than Elvis Presley or what group today is up for comparisons against the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, Eagles? Madonna vs Britney Spears or Taylor Swift? It's usually not even up for discussion. In that community I truly believe it wouldn't even be up for discussion. I really feel that their are some who want to erase MJ's legacy and he keeps getting compared to artist of today and if they are better. 2 months ago it was Drake and then it was Chris Brown. I don't recall any discussions or comparisons over Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley and why would you when you have Prince. We didn't have to go back two decades to compare Michael to another giant. There were many extraordinaires during his day that we could compare him to. Hell, we even debated who was the better dancer Micheal or Hammer. These silly debates don't do anything but expose the lack of talent that's been plaguing the industry for the last two decades. How could she be great if she's never been compared amongst her peers. Beyonce work ethic and performances are inline with those 6 by the way she brings her A game like no other. So I think when ppl start to put her on a higher pedestal over legends like a MJ, they confuse accomplishments with total impact. MJ was more than a pop star on stage with a band and dancers, he was a phenomenon and perhaps still is!

Definitely didn’t click on this video thinking I was going to watch the whole thing but I’m glad I did. This was so thorough and brilliant. Thank you. I think the only piece of the conversation that was missing was the misogyny lingering in the background of these opinions. But I know that’s an entire conversation in itself. Great work though!

Beyonce music has never moved me, Beyonce has never shook an entire nation , the way Michael has. Babies today are dancing and mimicking Michael Jackson. My 5 yr old niece and nephew knows of Michael but not Beyonce!

Michael's music is legendary and will go on for decades. Beyonce's music is of the moment. Both great entertainers. Michael is one of a kind.

I personally think shes super duper talented and I used to like some of her songs but yeah most of them don't do much for me tbh. Michaels music was more exciting. But I dont want to.downplay her talent cause she works hard. But since shes into certain practices now I have to back off.

I agreed with every single one of your points. Very well thought out video. There's no point in comparing them, they are their own and have each made their mark on the world. Michael is KING and Beyonce can SING! Both amazing artist and entertainers.

Calvin, I think it’s also worth mentioning that this woman (and her family) have made rude comments about Michael AND Janet in the past. Always left a bad taste in my mouth. Great vid 👍🏾

If you are an MJ fan and saw the news reports showing folk in various countries (even the ones we never heard of before) mourning him after his death, you understand why NO ONE is and will NEVER be on his level. MJ was truly loved worldwide. I even read an article of a country singer talking about his visit to a remote country. He said, “they don’t know who Elvis is. Yet, they know who Michael Jackson is”. The fact that so many artists are attempting to “dethrone him” proves how phenomenal and HUGE he was! My response will always be “miss me with that bs!”

Who are these people who say MJ couldn't sing?!!..he was the most consistent vocal artists of all time...and I don't quite agree with the video stating MJ couldn't sing after 1990...a bunch of his most famous songs came in the 90s and they are vocally amazing...yeah you can say that he shifted his attention from live singing to more dynamic and advanced dance routines...but he was still vocally amazing...

Well said. I’ve always been a Janet fan over all the names you mentioned with exception to Prince. She is slept on but her career was tanked, as we know. I, also, agree that Velvet Rope was her greatest, for me.

Thank you for this video. I love how you broke everything down. Michael is someone I grew up watching as a child. I've never seen anything like him in my life. Michael is truly a legend and no one has been able to have his success he has had in music. Beyonce is great but Michael is truly one of a kind ❤️

I so agree on the Janet thing. For far too long, I would ignore Janet because I used to see her as Michael's sister. Someday, I listened to Rhythm Nation and my whole mind was blown. I always cry at the song's end because of her poignant vocals and poignant message. This woman is stellar and it's really a pity that people are automatically willing to dismiss her talent emand effort as a full-fledged artist. I prefer her over Michael 100% because her songs is much more relatable to me.

No one. NO ONE can do it like MJ.
His shows were magical. I have gone to a lot of concerts in my life. In college, that’s all we did lol
But the one show that I remember with the fondest of memories and compare every show to, is MJ’s.
I saw him on his Bad Tour when I was just a kid and I STILL remember that concert.

37 consecutive weeks!!!! Artists today will be #1 for a week and then fall down the charts. I hate when we act like these streaming records are comparable to pure sales. Let’s congratulate them but to act like their impact is the same as legendary acts from the past irks me.

I love hearing someone speak when they’re in THEIR bag. You are a true lover and student of music, and it’s a joy to hear you talk about it. I’m older than you and was alive for things that you weren’t, and you still know things about the music of the era that I had no idea about. I love that for us…….what a resource you are. You should teach a college class-it would be packed.
