- Gallagher & Lyle - Breakaway 1976
I watch the distant lights go down the runway
disappear into the evening sky.
Oh you know I'm with you on your journey
Never could say goodbye.
And you will waken in another country
greet the morning under foreign skies.
Leaving me to face another Monday
it's not easy to get by.
It's not the place you're going to.
It's just a phase you're going through.
Though I won't stop you I don't want
to breakaway.
Fly across your ocean, breakaway
Time has come for you breakaway
Fly across your ocean, breakaway
Time has come
And now you travel on your own opinion,
leave your fears and doubts to fade away
Dust your dreams and take them on your journey,
Spread your wings and fly away
(Instrumental)
It's not the sun you're tryin to find
Something else is on your mind
You need a little space and time
to breakaway
It's not the place you're going to.
It's just a phase you're going through.
Though I won't stop you I don't want
to breakaway.
Fly across your ocean, breakaway
Time has come for you breakaway
Fly across your ocean, breakaway
Time has come for you
The 1970s was certainly a harmonious time to be around. Things seemed a lot slower and relaxed back then, even in London! Yes, 1976 will always be remembered for good music and that long hot summer.
I was at college in London that year. Dave Cash used to play this a lot on Capital. Great song.
Summer 76 was like 1913, the halycon summer before punk, disco, social discontent, NF, Thatcher's rise and on a personal level becoming a spotty confused teenager. Gallagher & Lyle's trio of brilliant hits that epitomizes that sedate calm before the storm
So many great songs like this in the 70s. I am happy that this is the music of my generation.
Holy crap, I haven’t heard this song for almost half a century! Takes me straight back to 15 years old.👍🍻
Lol ,same here
found album in a charity shop for 50 cents and never heard of them despite being 53, a bit like gilbert o'sullivan,Supertramp, 10 cc and so melodic.
Oh those Steamy Sultry UK days/nights of '76- sensational sounds, friends, family, times. How I miss this period!!!😢
I was 15 ,what a summer ,what times .
Agreed. I was 15 going on 16 too... best years...
Me too, Peter. But we must embrace each day, even now. We're not here for long.
Heard this song playing on the radio straight after my father died in hospital. The line "Time has come for you" really got to me.
So sorry x
RIP to your dad.
Songs will always come your way as a comfort similar experience when my parents died, it helps💕
My mum died in June 1976,aged 41..This song spoke to me of her Journey to another place ,away from her pain..I was only beginning with my pain of losing her.. I still cry when I hear this song❤
Fantastic, it's one of those songs that could come from nowhere but 76. What a year for music.
Indeed.
It is so very 1976!
Never appreciated it at the time. What a beautiful song.
Song reminds me of when I threw my wedding ring in the sea at that fantastic resort of Skeggy. A year and half later met my new wife, so it does get better , again this era of music was great. I don't think we knew that then , but at 69 I know now. Brummie Bob.
On first hearing this in '76, I glanced towards my now sadly departed brother, who instantly returned the gesture. We both knew immediately that this was a great song, and it quickly became one of several shared favourites. Thanks for evoking the memory of the time and the place. And thanks to Benny & Graham - sadly under-rated talents.
I saw the dynamic duo at Bournemouth winter Gardens on 15th November 1977 this song was covered by Art Garfunkel 😅😅😂😂🎉🎉❤❤❤😊😊😊
This brings back really good memories of 1976. Can someone hurry up if they are working on a time machine...I want to go back before I pop my clogs!
Takes me back to the summer of 76. Baking hot summer 15 years old, life was a dream. Oh I wish I knew then what I know now. Wonderful song and memories of my youth.
Absolutely. Simpler times and more heartfelt genuine songs from proper artists not obsessed with celebrity...
+Colin Riley I won't disagree. I did not really love that summer. I spent it as a wage slaver in a posh London pub/restaurant (now pub/kitchen). I started at 9.30 cleaning the toilets, damp dusting etc, then the bar, the restaurant or the sandwich bar (plebs went there, workmen or office types and the latter could be vicious if they thought you looked sweaty or did not cut their sandwiches to the right proportions.) 2 hours off in the afternoon then bar, restaurant and it was Knightsbridge!! Hateful. The only good thing that came of that summer was my landlady (the bitch from hell) made a comment "workmen like big women, particularly women with big tits" (I stand accused and I liked them). That summer I went from a size 18 to a size 10 and never looked back.
The song is nice though and there were some others, weren't there?
I feel for you Colin. I was luckier; I remember riding a motorbike from south to north Wales and having to stop at a river for a swim. Wonderful ride and cooool swim.
I was 17 and life was just begining :-)
Colin Riley ...........Ah Colin, memories are made of this😎
Absolutely fabulous. Wow. These guys were in mcguiness flint. Fantastic
Like it was yesterday. 19 years old, in love, hot summer, sitting under the stars around a fire. Beautiful.
yeah '76 the best summer ever
The seventies the best time of our lives.
Radio 2 use to play these old favourites before they became radio1s twin brother, rarely hear these greats anymore
The 70s - when music was worth listening to. Remember rushing out to town to buy the Breakaway LP when I got my wages. Brings back evocative memories of happier times.
👍👍
Spent this summer with a beautiful exotic lady, warm nights of passion, and this song playing
I like your style mate
@@alexdelarge7971 Thanks Alex, wild times, feel the suns rays and remember,
One of the hottest summer in the UK in 1976 at school age 13 😎
Perfect example of artful, melodic songwriting.
Absolutely.
Thanks Voyager 2 ..You find planets and we find great old songs
That's how I found this song too. Never heard of it before. I thought I knew all of them......
I was 16... Like yesterday... Simple times
So befitting.
Agreed. :)
A sound of the past: beautiful, calming and melodic, these guys knew how to create a hit without overblown riffs or fanfares; I’m happy that others were to provide, otherwise.
76 best year of my life - at least then - new start at university
Poignant -uplifting with undertones of sadness
Everything Gallagher & Lyle did was high quality. And there was no 'act' about (musicians these days it often seems that's all there is) - they wrote, sang, and played from the heart.
Billy Connolly used to open for them i believe on their early tours when he was a folk singer.
I just discovered this lovely song, it was being used in a documentary on PBS about the Voyager 1 and 2 space probe missions back in the 70s and 80s. The chorus has a sort of dreamy Alan Parsons feel to it. Love it.
Yup, same here. The documentary is called "The Farthest - Voyager in Space" and was very good imo. =D
Yep. Same.
Me too!! Was watching the same documentary and remembered this from the 70's! Thank you for posting and sharing!
same
Another one here! Fantastic song/docu. What a lovely blend! Never heard this song before...
What a beautiful piece of music.
So profound... " Fly across your ocean . Break away ,time has come has come FOR you."
Great great track❤
10 years old in 1976 and it was heaven.
Underrated vocal harmonies. The chorus is brilliant.
Evergreen. Hope those who listen to this song have the possibility to break away every now and than , never lose your own way
You need a little space in time
This is absolutely a classic .takes me back .My daughter left for Australia last year with her partner for the second time They are only 26 and 28 .But this song says it all xxxthank you 🇮🇪
Love this song. I was only a young child but grew up listening to them. I live about 40mins from Largs, where they came from!
there are so many amazing chord changes in this, even just from one line to another..brilliant
Loved these guys growing up in Glasgow, Scotland, brings back alot of memories :)
Yeah me to another great scottish band 🏴👍
What kind of monster gives this a thumbs down? It's lovely. If you don't dig it, baby, I'll tell you what you can do with that thumb of yours.
😂😂
Great music 🎶 great memories ❤
Still brilliant in 2020 🎶🎤🎸👍
Much understated duo.
Beautiful , so many memories built on their songs.
Genius songwriters
One of the first albums I bought as a teenager. Such poignant memories.

Scotland's greatest singing sons.
Hot summer of '76. Good times and brilliant music!!!
They penned some beautiful songs......
First heard it whilst nursing a broken leg from a horse riding accident when I was 16 in 2000
Fabulous. Have loved this forever but only knew the Art Garfunkel - until today!
What a lovely song I was in middle school when this was in charts lol showing my age now

Yep, agreed with Master Blaster. Voyager brought me here. Music is the key to life.
The year I was born, my brother re introduced me to it in the 80s. So sad the simple times have past
Have not heard this in years, what a beautiful song.

For you
I too heard this in the Voyager PBS documentary. I had completely forgotten about this song. It got airplay on progressive rock radio back in the 70's. Our station was WZZQ in Jackson, MS.
It reminds me of a great time and a lost love. Thanks for the memories.
me too.....I went to work in Nassau and he cried at the station. I still think of him to this day. I am 67 now.
Larry Johnson oh that’s so sad ! 😕
One of those tracks that I knew of, but didn't know who performed it. Just a wonderful feeling to listen to it. Not surprised that it brings back memories for so many of the people who've posted comments on this page.
1976 Teenagers in Belfast..it wasnt easy but we got by...In our late 50s now love seen us thought..E love you now as I loved then.
God bless the 70s so much too live for
JWT add in Ireland back in the 80s ,lovely song.
We broke away in the 70s left our hometown behind turns out it was the hardest and best thing we ever did..
Now that's what I call music! :-)
Lovely little trip of just three and a half minutes, back to that wonderful summer.
Yes!!!
'BBC Four - Storyville, The Farthest: Voyager's Interstellar Journey' brought me here. :D
omg! Same here!!
Just listened to I won’t to say with you & then remembered this one
some of my favorite vocals in a song. Oh, happy memories!
soooo good
Love it reminds me of school, found the lyrics in a text book and have stayed with me ever since 💋
Love, love “time has come for you “ 😘😘😘😘
Memories of being 14 again ...wish I could go back for a while ....
Absolute class. What a smash from bonny Scotland.
worked on the barges in and out of Liverpool docks into port sunlight up the Manchester canal, radiio on. Batteries never last that long so had a stash loads of brill music hottest summer
I was 10 when this came out loved it then and now.
So true...I bought this album that summer - I was working in North Devon at a flower nursery...fantastic summer, great album.
I was eating a breakaway bar when I found this......serendipity........the opening few lines bring me back alright.
Absolutely beautiful song..................i was 8 in 1976 and for some reason listening to this i remember my aunt and uncles VW beetle lol................wished i had it now :)
The Voyager documentary was made by the Irish film board in collaboration with BBC, PBS, ARTE and others. I was a 70s kid obsessed with all things space. This song played on the radio among others when I was reading my space encyclopedia, aged 6.
me too. saw them at newcastle city hall twice. before and after their usa tour 1975/6 what a gr8 band . each member just immense .. Ray Duffy on drums worthy of special mention.. . a beautiful lilt to his playing whilst still full of impact where needed and rock rock steady.right down the middle ..listen to him coming back in after a stop.. oh yes .. he feels the music and his natural use of light and shade is wonderful to hear.. i hope he s still playing.. what a talent he was born with
I can imagine ,when you were at the concert with someone, you falling in love. This romantic melody makes you dream away
i remember buying this,great lyrics.
Finally found this song! Hard to find because of Kelly Clarkson and others with the same title. I had the lyrics I remembered slightly wrong too.
Legendary ! When I listen to this I feel like the auld lad in that painting from Goodfellas. The one where he's with the two dogs on the little boat.
Just a beautiful song.
Redhead, tanned and pealed 3 times...hot summer....miss it! People where nice....
I love this beautiful song, straight back to the 70s every time I listen to it. Thank you G&L.
This song brings me to tears. Perfection!
Fresh, as yesterday......immortal music.
Vocal in the first verse is very clear and beautiful... I arrived here from The Voyager doc too....
Great track and a great duo. Like to listen to them even now
Back in the days when I was potless this was one of the very few LPs I bought.
Para mi este tema de Gallagher and Lyle ha de ser uno de los mejores temas que oí en mi vida . Desde los años 70. Para mi Felícidad conseguí escucharlo el año pasado después de más de 40 años. SENCILLAMENTE. UNa JOYA este temon . 👌👏👏👏👏
I remember this song was used for a TV holiday ad for Joe Walsh tours I think,it really does take me back,13 years old dreaming of travelling to sandy beaches and blue seas,ah the seventies great memories....x
I came on here trying to confirm which ad it was. Thanks
Yes, it was JWT. I heard it this morning on RTÉ radio 1 during a holiday competition, DJ was talking all the way through it and I was shouting at the radio for him to shut up and just play the song 🤣
First time I've heard this in over 30 years.
Thanks for posting.
I really ought to thank the performers; thank you, G&L, this is a quite wonderful song.
Watch the PBS presentation of 'The Farthest'...a whole new perspective of the song comes through.
Studying for my 'A' levels, G&L constantly on the record player. Thanks boys. Happy days. Long gone.
Takes me back.
