The most criminally underrated musician ever. Been listening to JJ for over 40 years, and am still amazed at his immense talent.
Same here bro....I think it was 1979 when I really got hit by this music...when "Is she really going out with him" was released...it was so fresh and different I was hooked from that moment.
That's funny, I was just going to post the same comment! 👍
ive been saying that forever ,if you like all music have my own music page we play it all
Without question, Joe Jackson is one of the most underrated musicians ever. He is a master at almost every aspect of music. Quite the rarity. This piece is wonderful!
his problem was his looks. Came of age in video era
@@cdick elton john was a strange looking fella and he seemed to be in the top 10 artists of the 70s and 80s
@@edwardbrown5056 It's a strange case where you're both right. Every study of human behavior shows that looks are *_hugely_* important to most people. I've listened to females (of varying ages) get _outraged_ at Duran Duran for having Andy Taylor as their guitarist. As if he has a more pleasant face in storage somewhere but chooses the one we see to offend them.
I'm not saying men are necessarily better, but they _kind of _*_try_* to imagine female musicians that they enjoy to be more attractive than they really are. I can't give examples without potentially offending everyone on the planet though. 😬 But check out Dan Ariely's presentations to see some of this & how it affects things in the real world.
I've heard Christopher Cross remains bitter about being a talented musician in the MTV era who didn't look the part. Perhaps. Joe Jackson, one of my favorites ever (maybe my favorite ever) was/is a far better musician than Cross was. However, he might have some issues of his own as he has had a lot of plastic surgery and/or botox in recent years. Nevertheless, he was awesome this past June in Atlanta!
@@mattloughran5727 Cross could have benefited from one thing: having clips of his live performances shown. He had some stage presence & dynamism that couldn't show up on video.
"Run Like The Wind" had a guitar solo that gets cut off on the studio fade-out for instance that he could extend on stage. He was a big football linesman kind of guy, & even if he never got the women in masses, Rush has shown that you can fill stadiums even when your fan base is 90% or more male.
It could have been done, turning him into a larger success. Quite easily in fact. But like most of the population, record execs are mentally lazy. For instance, the '80s had about a dozen Canadian bands that could _easily_ have had hits on the U.S. charts, but their record labels simply refused to promote them anywhere _but_ Canada.
Even before the internet age, one has to wonder at their thinking. It's the same language, & had they been British or American, would have gotten this. Plus the record company _itself_ benefits from selling more records. Literally nothing was stopping them except some bizarre mindset that made no sense whatever.
There was a song by some group called "Sheriff" that went to #1 after some radio DJ who knew of a group called Frozen Ghost, who wasn't allowed to play their music by his station, found when he searched for any songs they'd recorded earlier. He started playing it on some 'blasts from the past' segment on his new radio station & with no video (as it was recorded before videos were mandatory & the band had already split up) & it went to #1.
_That's what_ record companies & their execs do, shoot themselves in the pocketbook. Gowan, Saga, Chalk Circle & Corey Hart all would have been smashes for at least the '80s (with Corey Hart & Gowan at least having the looks). Darby Phyllis Mills of the Headpins (stupid name) was the next Janis Joplin as was & possibly still is Sass Jordan.
Does anyone think One Person would have refused to buy their CD or go to their concert because they were Canadian? Do the names Joni Mitchell & Neil Young mean nothing to anyone? It's not only in politics, idiots dominate everywhere.
Joe had already built a following _before_ the video age, even if it was _just_ before, & by gaining a good reputation for his live performance. For Cross, it was almost certainly record companies looking at him & deciding not to shell out $ to produce his records without that advance following that I guess he never amassed.
Sad. & yeah, Joe's likely had some work done out of necessity because, well, look at Tears for Fears. They came out with something earlier this year & *_ALL the comments_*_ were about how they looked._
So, yeah, Joe might have been meeting fans who gave him "that look" & possibly decided to do it based on that. Who knows?
Do you really care?
Joe Jackson is one of the hardest working artists in the business.
That guitar is ridiculously underrated. These dudes are geniuses. Joe Jackson is a musical genius. The boys are top shelf..
Jackson’s music was just so ahead of his time that much of his catalogue will always sound current. It concerns me that there have been other musicians like this in the early part of the 21st century who because they don’t look a certain way or sound a certain way, they never got an opportunity. We are so lucky to have had Joe when we did because if he came along 10 or 12 years later, nobody would have broken him. Everyone please do what you can to support and elevate your local musicians and let’s stop leaving it in the hands of those who only wish to put people over whom they can profit from.
and yet he is not in RnR Hall of Fame but Jay-Z, Grandmaster Flash and Run DMC are. Funny how life works isnt it.
@@GR8SCOT22 The what? The RNR HOF? The RNR has zero credibility. That is a Hall of the Really Good Musicians... nothing more.
I honestly think this is one of Joe's best ever tracks ,live . A so underestimated guy. He is up there with the best. Love you Jo
He has some good songs, but this one is by far my favorite!
I know what you mean. Just on appearance alone, I would never suspect Joe to be capable creating a wonderful song like "You Can't Get What You Want"
Totally agree. This is my favorite song of Joe’s and believe it is underrated because it was off his follow-up LP after Night and Day and it was not as well received by the critics as expected.
I love his Jumpin' Jive album. Not something a normal pop artist records.
Joe Jackson never got the recognition he truley deserves. This man is definitely a musical genius.
Absolutely true 👍
😢❤😊 complètement d'accord 🥁🎩 entièrement
The man plays piano, sings, and plays sax. That’s next level musical talent folks… 🤯
Royal Acadamy of Music, baby.
HELL YES! SO MUCH TALENT. 100% SO RIGHT ON MISTER YANG
He is a true master of his art.
@@JOHNHEALY-mg2xyi0i
I think he plays guitar also
Finally an artist who sounds the same live as they do on a studio album. This was amazing to hear.
Better !
He’s incredible live!
The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Genesis were pretty good at that as well.
Ya he's black
It is because he is a real artist that can play real instruments. No cut and paste magic!
Real talent. This society has forgotten about real talent.
@Montréal 🇨🇦...TiGHT 🎼❤️🎼
I don't think people understand what a great songwriter, producer and arranger Joe Jackson is. He's probably one of the best of the 20th century. On one album (I can't remember which) he performed every instrument.
He's certainly worth the study, not only for music enjoyment, but for the architecture of how a record is actually made.
I think it was the album 'Night Music' which also includes some 'classic' pieces (Nocturne Nr. 1-4)
M.J. Gray NO,THEY DON'T! THEY ARE IGNORANT,UNEDUCATED FOOLS!
Day and Night perhaps?
Kommt schon nahe an Heinz - Rudolf Kunze heran, sehr gut!
Too true!
This sounds so much like the recording it's insane, unbelievable talent
Exact same musicians used in the recording. Also same acoustics, mostly room reverb/echo.
Not sure if this live show was done before, during or after album recording
@@ervie60 If I remember the liner notes correctly, the record was recorded live in the "studio", which was a masonic lodge. Joe wanted to capture the live sound and experience. He took the idea one step further on his next album by recording it live in front of an audience and that was the album.
@@xxczerxx Truth!!!
This song has such a great vibe, vocals, bass, horns. Terrific REAL music.
The guitarist is straight up jamming.
He s on sax
@@MenkaByrd-nd2nm The comment is about the guitarist (Vinnie Zummo).
I became your fan when I was in high school. 40 years have passed since then, but I am happy that you are still alive and well in this world.
Golden era, the lead singer playing saxophone. Now a days the lead singer uses autotune, not even his vocals
Edgar Winter
It's a shame Joe seemed to drop from the collective consciousness after the mid 80s or so. I always thought he was one of the greatest musical talents of his day. This song is a masterwork that I can never get enough of.
video killed the radio star
Saw him shortly before Covid shut everything down. Still does a great show. I think he's on tour this year.
Saw him in Knoxville Tennessee in 2019 in a venue of maybe 1500 people. It was absolutely amazing. At least four generations of fans singing and dancing together, it was a truly special night. And yes, just as good if not better with age.

Still listening to Joe Jackson in 2025 ❤❤
And loving every moment of Joe's music.
When I went to a car audio shop to replace the head unit of my car with a brand new pioneer with all the gizmos for today, this is what I played to test it, loud enough so that everyone at the shop turned heads, the owner of the place was smiling "what a great song , ages that I didnt hear it", the guys working there hadnt heard it but when I told them it was released in 84 then they said "that was a good period for music creation"
Joe Jackson = pure talent!
i don't know what's with all the gatekeepy 80's comments on here, but im a teenager and i wanna vouch and say: this man's music is TIMELESS. i won't badmouth any generation's music, but joe jackson is truly a gem of his time.
JOE JACKSON IS ONE OF THE BEST PIANIST. WRITER AND IF PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW THIS ABOUT ONE OF HIS LIVE ALBUMS THE ALBUM AFTER THE 1980-1986, THE NEXT LIVE ALBUM HE HAD DONE IMAGINE THEY RECORDED IT LIVE BUT YOU DO NOT HEAR ANY CROWD NOISE. CLAPPING COUGHING TALKING ANYTHING TO JUST DOING AND RECORDING THAT IS GENIUS BUT I STILL HAVE TO SAY...RUSH IS ANOTHER UNDERATED BAND AND AT LEAST THEY R IN THE ROCK HALL OF FAME
I remember dancing with my wife at a outdoor event in Waikiki back in the 80's to this classic, man to be that young again.but not to worry we have been living a wonderful life together ❤️
In your hearts, you are always "that young". 😍
@nixworld767 thanks
That bass line, though.. Killer!
Who comes here 2020!!! I love this song... The bass man and horns are greatfull... Graham is a genious
The Great Sir Joe Jackson. For me he is one of the greatest performers to come out of England. So that is the highest compliment I can give him.
this is how it's done boys and girls, no studio cut needed.
SAY IT AGAIN FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK! 😂 👍🏼
Like the fact that it's an 80s live performance that isn't lipsynkd
アップありがとうございます!!大好きだった!!
I’m no musician but it has to be hardcore to sing lead vocals and play the sax. 😮
Awesome!!!!
Indeed. Orinda (Rindy) Ross did it in Quarterflash's "Harden My Heart" !!
I want to give this one four upvotes: one for Joe, one for Graham, another for Joe for playing his own sax, and one for the Tower-of-Power-worthy brass! YEA!
This man is so good and so underrated. One of best live shows I've been too
HE HAD A DOZEN TOP TEN HITS AROUND THE WORLD; I THINK HE DID QUITE WELL FOR HIGH CLASS POP AND YOUR KEYBOARD IS BROKEN
Hi Dana:don't agree, listen to his albums after Look Sharp!,so many evolution.......i think
He's underrated. He had hits and fame but he should have got more. Great melodist, great songwriter, no one sounds like him. Great productions, great art. Much much more than a few hits.
claybeach117 I agree Joe Jackson is a great songwriter! So underrated!
yup
For people with a good ear for jazz.Joe is worth a listen.❤

The horns and bass were badass! 🎷🎺🎸🎼🎼🎼
The saxophone as well

It's too o bad this song didn't have more air time
This song is so woefully underrated, as is most of Joe Jackson's output. Graham Maby has got to be among the best bass players ever...
look kids, this is what real musicians and real instruments look like! 😲😀
No computers, no frickin auto-tune... just real Playas... Awesome

I love this song and I’m 20 years old… stop hating on young people😂 it’s not good for your health.
Stock Aitken and Waterman I'm looking in your direction!
Always loved Joe Jackson since the 80's!
So smooth, romantic, inflective, and deep.
Among all the "Pop madness" at the time (Michael
Jackson, Prince and Madonna) he was actually making
us think!
I was 13 at the time and obsessed with Prince and others that summer but I really liked this song, even though it wasn't the usual pop music the radio played. Kind of like it was more mature, for listeners who weren't 13 year old girls haha 😂But I've always loved it.
Joe Jackson's music is smooth like melted chocolate
The guitarist has some nice lines
This album is absolutely epic. All recorded live and I have it on vinyl. The tone quality is something you just can't explain. Thus, this version sounds exactly like the album
I have about 5,000 records. I was a DJ in the 90s and I can't tell you how much better vinyl sounds than the "digital" crap we have nowadays.. It's not the sound, it's the experience. If you don't understand that. you have no idea what good music really is
@@ericweiler6571 vinyl played on analog tube receivers has a warmth to it that even the best digital just does not have.
Silly voodoo talk. Body and soul is a fully digital 3M Record. CD is Hifi Vinyl is Lofi and the rest voodoo nonsenseblablabla....

Hi from downunder
Very well written song. Bass line, horns--everything is perfect. I listen to everything from Nirvana to Hendix to Coltrane to Depeche Mode to Helmet and this song is in my top 50 of all time.
Absolutely listen to those artists too and Joe's music is eternally great. Don't forget the esteemed Mister David Bowie - omnipresent throughout the eras you just described.
Absolutely Mister David! Thank you! David Bowie is amazing!
Who is Hendix?
@@opiumtrail7032 Jimi Hendrix
Exellent song, but in this version the bass is not prominent enough and the guitar solo good enough compared to the one on the single.

Very Talented Joe Jackson always liked his Music.
Anthony i like your comment i feel the same way as you x i have adored this very fine genius of a bloke since his beginning , until eternity i say lol Jane xx
In addition to this being an epic tune, it’s awesome to see the entire band having fun playing together. At approximately 1:30, the saxophonist right behind Joe moves back with the trumpeter after their horn break. As he stepped back,he gave a small fist pump whilst holding on to the top of his saxophone.
One of those artists whose repertoire holds up over time. It was classic on day one.
Pure. This is talent. Kids, listen and learn. I love Joe Jackson.
So rich sound, bass is present, winds are present, guitar is present, keyboards are present, drums are present.
Musicianship and attitude to a higher level !
Ain't that the truth Javonne. i love this song. Flat out love it.

Why haven’t I heard this before? Amazing arrangement. Went down the Steely Dan rabbit hole and found this gem.
Just amazing already looking for concert venues
Possibly one of the longest and most enjoyable rabbit holes. My favorite "band" by far. I know everything they've done yet would love to hear all their songs for the first time again.
Welcome!
There aren't any bands truly like Steely Dan but there are a few bands that take a lot of sophisticated harmony and apply it to great pop songs.
I'd recommend Prefab Sprout, the "Steve McQueen" album is amazing.
I work in a supermarket, and I mean this with sincerity, absolutely my #1 favorite banger we play on my playlist at work.
This is my favorite song of his. I hope they don't ever mess up and play this over the network at work. They'll think I've gone crazy because I'll be singing at the top of my lungs!
I think I know where you work. This popped up and I couldn't stop laugh at this song. Now, it's one of the best.
A few years back, this came on at Publix (local supermarket) and I started dancing in the frozen foods section. My daughter caught me on her camera and recorded it. Just a happy memory!
The man Joe Jackson thank you!
Joe was an ‘80s treasure. So much great music in that decade he kinda got lost in the mix, but his music is timeless.
So wish we could bring back the Joe…. For you and Me
I looked up the word "smooth" in the dictionary. It took me to this incredible live performance. Truly a timeless classic.
This song never gets old. Still jamming .
