- I'm playing through most (if not all) of the Resident Evil franchise and giving my opinion on the music, mechanics, story, gameplay, enemy , art design and everything else in each game for most of April. Trying to get hype for RE8 :) First up is Resident Evil Zero! Enjoy!

I really like RE0. The environments are gorgeous and most of the gameplay is a lot of fun. I also like that they added more animals and bugs and what not as monsters.
The gentlest of taps with the knife on the scorpion's pincer are slaying me. The animations in this game are wild.

I dislike how Rebecca is a certified badass in RE:0 but absolutely helpless in RE:1, I wish it were consistent.
This is awesome, it’s hard finding a good play through of this game and other re games, can’t wait to see your new videos or catch them on stream.(has he done all the games already on stream?)
I love this game a lot and enjoyed it very much, the new pairing system and item management, despite few flaws. There should have been 'Fully Attack' option to your partner when you want them fully destroy any enemy around especially the bosses, whether you are shooting it or not! Also let us find at least 1 side carrying pack for one of the characters. Some people might hate the leech monster and its difficulty but I loved it with that music, also the monkey monsters, they were needed for the new horror & fear factors IMO. Like the Redhead Zombies in RE1 Remake.
Capcom and Game Cube were very generous to give us this OG style RE game before the transition to RE4, so I was very appreciative and thankful.

Watched it live, will watch it again! Zero is one of those games that I bought when it came out but I had no patience for some of the shennanigans it threw at me. I've lived it vicariously through others and I'm OK with that haha

RE:zero is a flawed gem, but still a gem. It looks so good, even today.
just beat it for the first time today. Frustrating for the obvious reasons, but still fantastic. Looking forward to Hard mode run tomorrow
@beef business because that isn't true. for people who like classic survival horror, this game has amazing gameplay. the story is bad, yeah, but the lore it adds is also pretty interesting. ands the atmosphere is awesome.

I loved it actually and Revelations 2 I feel are the most underrated RE games I agree the inventory system is a wreck. But I'd love to see an RE2 style remake of this game

Many people believe that Rebecca in that scene with a hunter in RE1 proves RE0 inconsistency in the storyline. Let my justify this moment. Almost throughout whole RE0 Rebecca is greatly helped by a more experienced soldier Billy. On top of that, she does not sleep for two days constantly being in tension, and even more, when she encounters hunter in RE1 she doesn't have any good weapon. So when she is cornered by a hunter with no ammo without Billy, and with no sleep, it is ok for a 18 year old rookie to scream and call for a help.
I accept this reasoning. I think it's acceptable to assume she must have been both physically and mentally exhausted. I think I would scream too if I crawled out of one hell hole into another, and without Billy for that matter.
Thanks again for doing this, it really brightens my weekend. And thank you for tossing these on TH-cam. I know it's not the most profitable thing compared to the work, but I really appreciate it. I usually can't catch your show live on Twitch (thought I stop in to renew my sub) but I prefer the UI and playback that youTube offers. Twitch really needs to step up it's game there.
It’s crazy to think this game was made only 6 years after the original. The visuals are a huge difference for 1996-2002. Even with all its flaws I really like this game, mostly the music and atmosphere... and it’s the last fixed camera game we got right? Loving the content bawk, I’ll try and make a stream sometime.
Out break 1 and 2 came out after this, and feature semi-fixed angles in the same vein as code veronica.
I like to think Rebecca fought her way through the forest, making for her being awake for well over 24 hrs in high stress combat. So maybe that’s why she’s so weak in 1.
This game is saying that billy is 5'9 163 pounds? Dont believe it.

If RE0 would've had the same scheme as RE1, it would be in my top 5 for sure.
So happy Bawk is doing this series. Even happier he's posting it on youtube. I watch all the time but don't have the time for live sessions. To be able to watch a video a bit at a time is quite nice. I like the slower more intimate playthrough for a change of pace. I'm a lifelong fan of the series. It's cool to hear the thoughts and opinions of someone who's even more re veteran than i am.
Fun fact about the first part of the train, if you don't pick up any items into your inventory and drop it to the ground. Then when the train crashes those unpicked up items will be deleted. Even if you pick it up and say no setting it back down, the item will be deleted. However, if you pick it up and drop it, all those dropped items will be thrown off of the train with you... Somehow.
The train in RE0 is my favorite area in any RE game still to this day. Also my favorite looking one as well. I really hope they remake it one day and give it the same love they gave RE2R.
That would be so much fun, bc i think it would be great as a co-op game. I feel like games like It Takes Two and A Way Out show that people would enjoy co-op puzzle solving.
I absolutely hated how small and tight the train is it was so scary. It was very hard for me to dodge or go around enemies
I thought only Rebecca was able to use the hookshot due to her being lighter. Idk if, when I first played, I got that impression due to the manual saying smtg about it but I never used it with Billy so the problem Bawk mentions at 3:13:44, I just never had it.
I do like Rebecca's character overall.. But she really does not look like she is cut out to be part of STARS... Same with just a standard police officer.. Especially with how she does things when fist encountering Billy.
Interestingly, originally stars weren't really police. The original idea is that they were a private organization contracted to law enforcement agencies. Stars would recruit scientists, it experts and ex military and law enforcement and contract them out during crisis. Most of these ideas were scrapped, but the character bios in the instruction manual for re 1 still describe Kenneth as just a chemist. All this to say that having genius medic investigating baffling cannibal murders makes perfect sense, especially if you recall that there were only thought to be like 12 unarmed attackers.
I think that's partially just due to the way Capcom portrayed their female characters early on.
As much as we all love jill and how badass she is in later games, in RE1 remake she literally does the "Oh no!" Horror movie girl trip and fall like 3 times whenever there is a cutscene, considering she's meant to be stars she just acts weirdly where chris just doesnt.
Rebecca is similar but even more over the top cos shes basically meant to be an anime teenage girl.
I've been thinking about this recently! I can't say I'm an expert on the hierarchy of law enforcement re; experience and qualifications, but I doubt she'd be able to join STARS at, 18(?) years old. Unless she was some sort of child prodigy?
My theory on the controls is that they just ported the GameCube button layout in a way too literal way. All the buttons serve the same function as the original GameCube controller, it's just that on a GameCube controller the buttons are in a different location. Circle is run because circle corresponds to b on an Xbox controller on and in the GameCube version the b button was run but b was in the same location on the controller that square is in on a playstation controller (the left face botton), if that makes any sense at all.
RE0 is such a great title in the series BUT in my opinion it’s starting to show it’s age. It would be cool if they make a remake in the future with RE Engine, third person camera and full coop (this game screams coop, seriously). Of course we need Code Veronica remake first :)

Online coop is the only thing that would really justify remaking this game. The inventory is more irritating than it needs to be and item placement is kind of weird, but the game looks and plays really well. Plus it's available on modern consoles. Code veronica needs far more work to bring it up to remake quality.

I guess the one thing I never understood is this: if that train is able to go to the training facility, were all the people on the train originally employed or visiting umbrella? Or was that just coincidence?
I’m pretty sure it’s an Umbrella train. The Passenger’s Diary says he’s on his way to examine an undisclosed incident at either the training facility or the Spencer mansion.
REs storylines were never the brightest, but this one takes the cake... For me, it’s just too silly and kinda disjointed from the original to be convincing.
It’s a shame because they’ve put real effort into making it look gorgeous. It’s very well executed from a technical pov, but it suffers a great deal from all the questionable decisions that were made.
I left the hookshot in the lobby until I needed and sent rebecca rather than billy and enjoyed the hell out of the game. Hearing what you said gives me more context on why this one seems to be so maligned.
Lol bad guy in the intro, crappy opera tune, they tried too fucking hard to pull of a second "code veronica" tier game with this but they failed miserably. I fuckin hate this game.
I cant believe this Game came out in 2002 which is mind blowing , despite it looks like something out of 2016 ( In which it is when it got a Global Release on PC and all Consoles ). It got released 2002 only for GameCube actually.... Other releases were the Remastered HD on 2010 for Wii and PS3/PS4 Xbox360/XboxOne on 2016. Despite this me personally i struggled alil bit with this Game only on some Areas being stuck for like a whole Week managing and sorting stuff while going thru it all... Along that Resident Evil Zero actually got pretty good Reviews at 91% which isn't bad , abit lower than RE Outbreak ( This game gets easier if you did play Outbreak before it , but despite being released before Outbreak no one truly played RE Zero on GameCube atleast not that i know of lol ) 😂
*Note* : This also indicates why this Game has a changed Control Pattern unlike RE1/RE2 , is because it was designed for the GameCube buttons not Consoles and PC... Its not untill after 2010-2016 is when they installed the same Control Patterns from GameCube to other Consoles with fixed 5 Configures in-game... That's not an issue specialy when the Game is tough already , which will let you adapt. Plus this Game is actually not Portable or Installed on PS2 ( Just an HD version for PS3 & PS4 with Xbox too and PC ). Also in GameCube it looks rough in terms of Graphics and Fluidity , which also made the game harder than it is if you tried playing it on GameCube as some of the Hix-Boxes can be missed even at close-range when aiming down or up for Headshots 😅 Lol here ya go for RE Zero's Background check atleast... It's still one of the good Best looking Fixed Camera Survival Games even untill now for over half a Decade 💯 ( *Resident Evil Zero was infact an Exclusive Game only for GameCube from 2002 uptill 2016 when it got a major HD Release on Consoles and PC* )

I'm convinced that Billy was originally being tested along with other S.T.A.R.S. members for combat abilities to become a worthy tyrant, after the events of RE0, Wesker's team with Umbrella captured and turned Billy into Nemesis. The way he says "you're with S.T.A.R.S." at 15:25 is complete foreshadowing of this. Some of the cutscenes in the games parallel with the live action movies, one of the scenes is Alice's husband getting hauled away to become Nemesis, it wouldn't be too far off if the game parallels this by taking the main character's companion. The timeline would theoretically also work out. Another pointless connection is that the tattoo sleeve Billy has could have interfered with the T-Virus parasite leading to Nemesis being left handed. With this theory of Nemesis originally being human and not another clone could explain how Nemesis is more intelligent, faster, and stronger than other tyrants.

It was Matt that became Nemesis in the films. Alice’s husband is killed by a Licker or something.

My favourite RE title
I kind of want a Resident Evil Zero Remake where it has Co-Op Multiplayer as an option, but you can also play it Single Player with Character switching. Less Action than Resident Evil 5, but you can still explore around the train / mansion separately.
I'v had RE0 in my library on steam for a long ass time.. everytime i see bawk play i jst wana pick it up and play it... i just genuinely wish it was coop.,. wouldve been hella fun. I think the fact that i have to sit and switch between characters over and over kinda put me off a little... even then i cant deny how beautiful and awesome this game really is...cant wait to experience both re0 and code veronica for the first time (maybe when they port it to pc sometime this century :( )

00:39:00 I find the REmake / Zero headshots at least more satisfying than the splotchy and fizz sound of RE7/RE2 remake/RE3 remake, in those it sounds like throwing a tomato at a wall.
Also, Billy's handgun is better than Rebecca's, I always carry his if I have to choose.
I thought the game says Billy is "stronger" than Rebecca (likely explained through military-trained aim and stronger arms to cut through things.) is it really just his handgun which is better?
My first RE game that I ever played
When I was 13 playing this game my first time I read the hookshot manual and it said something about a weight limit on it so I always thought I couldn't use it as Billy.
Resident Evil 0 is my third favorite Resident Evil. Such a special video game. A great extension of the first game, and in my opinion it's better. I also much prefer Rebecca in this game. She always felt off in RE1.

As a casual player I got some problems with this game: for starters there's waaaaaaayyy to little ammo. I mean if you know what to kill and how (for instance saving ammo against the scorpion) then well I guess u won't have problems but as I said, as a casual gamer u just wanna kill things bc u got no clue where to go and what to do. What brings me to my second biiiig problem: u don't have any clue which items u need and especially when u need them. So u take items, try to have room for them and leave them at some place. When u progress u suddenly need them and u gotta go baaack and pick them up. And my final problem is playing with two characters. Walking around with one character is sometimes boring enough. Having to do that on some occasions twice bc u gotta walk the way with the other character too is just a pain in the butt. Those might be simple points to anyone who knows the game but as a casual who wants to play a good game and have fun it's more than often way too annoying.
I agree. It’s better if you’ve played through it before but for a first run or casual player it’s an extremely hard sell.
I played this as a kid like in the 4th grade an beat it without TH-cam I didn’t even have internet. I have the camecube version still. Tho my uncle helped me with the food chain part fr he was a goat on that. But him saying “you won’t be able to do this in a causule play through” if I can’t do most of this by myself in the 4th or 5th grade I’m sure it’s not that bad…
Wait... you say its bad to have Billy go upatairs in the church lab.. but can you really even send him? At the start when you get the hookshot I remember the note saying it has a weight limit so I assumed only Rebecca could use it? But I never actually tried using the hookshot as Billy lol

This game is excellent, and handles NPC co-op better than any other title (RE4's Ashley was horrendous and RE5's Sheva was annoying)
Item box removal wasn't needed, made item management annoying. And the bat boss is horrible without lucky cheese, but otherwise, a high tier RE, great OST too.
Zombie monkeys you can avoid most of them, don't have to go back in the trture chamber nor the West side of the ground floor mansion. Otherwise aim up and blast when they come round the corner of the animal statue room and jump (use shottie).
Gloopy leech man (mimicry Marcus) is a great enemy, because he's a nightmare to bump into in those tight areas and to fight conventionally. Best method I found was to leave Rebecca outside, use Billy, throw 3 molotovs at him, cleans up those hallways.
As for Rebecca's lack of change from Zero to 1, they made 1 before this so probably didn't anticipate how her character might progress. Would be great to see her more capable in a new game though.
RE0 is in a weird place for me because it's sort of a nostalgic game in that my sister had it and I'd watch her play, but my interest in it is really muted for being a nostalgia game. Probably because the train is such a small part, and learning both that and all the weird anime villain shit with the antagonist later in life killed a lot of the mystique the game had for me.
At first I thought this was an April fools joke! But then I read the description and realised it was the start of an early birthday present! I love that idea and can't wait for more!
So there’s 2 locations for the green chemical in the game. One in that room and one in the laboratory later… so if miss the first one. You should see the second one
Watching this stream in multiple sittings after progressing through my own replay. This game has gorgeous visuals, great atmosphere and soundtrack but by god is it ever annoying as fuck in so many ways lol
Resident Evil 0 is a guilty pleasure for me, it's cannon, yet not really, "the entire game could have been a dream Rebecca had the night before heading to the mansion." and it also doesn't take itself too serious, like remake does. Its a great game for people looking to get into the RE series.

i'm hitting like and commenting because I like the longer playthrough videos. Perhaps you should as well.
I love RE0, but I acknowledge that it's a game best played after gaining experience with the other RE titles. It sucks that RE0 is often overlooked because as Bawk stated, it has really atmospheric music, absolutely gorgeous backgrounds, and some unique mechanics, like dropping items wherever, two characters, using or combining an item without needing to add it to inventory. Like Bawk also said, there are pitfalls that make it annoying for casual first-time playthroughs like needing to go back to retrieve the hookshot later in the game, potentially needing to have Rebecca run all the way back to the Training Facility just to look for a chemical from a canister. The story is also a bit weird and weak, and it doesn't really feel like Capcom made a true "prequel" to RE1 in that it's a bit thin, leech Marcus is a strange, opera-singing antagonist.
When you know what to expect, though, and can really take in all the detail that Capcom put into the graphics and the atmosphere, it's such a blast.
agreed. If this is your first RE experience it may not go to well, which sucks because for new RE players you would technically start with this one. However, once you get past the item management it's such a top tier RE game at the end of the day.
I know that this is an old video and I know that this is an old videogame of resident evil 0 but really I swear on the first start of the game I just ran out of ammo literally what kind of joke was that of the game trolling me with a mini boss of leeches
If there is any game to remake it is this one. The entire plot should be retconned and game restructured. Dump the young Marcus plotline as I think this is where the series first jumped the shark. Bring back the item boxes. They can still keep the dual player aspect but dump Billy for Richard (as this would make his death that much more impactful in REmake).

I just got the platinum trophy on this and for the life of me I have no idea what the purpose of the "A Verse of Poetry" file is. I can't remember ever needing to reference it for a puzzle. Can anyone to me explain what it's for?

the controls scheme was made for gamecube, maybe thats why the control scheme is very different in a normal controller
Really not sure why they changed the controls on the remaster. On gamecube, both are exactly the same
RE Zero and the RE1 remake where the first two games I got on the Gamecube.. Played both a LOT.. Watching this almost makes me want to dig out the system my old tv.. Almost. ( Pain in the butt to get to the TV.. The console and games are easy to get to just not the TV. sadly.. )

I love watching your videos but this game - even though it looks amazing, I find it boring. Not even the most entertaining of RE streamers can make this game interesting to watch let alone play, and I can only stomach to watch 15-20 minutes of it at a time.

Probably my biggest complaint about Zero is the continuity to the original. Rebecca is a badass in Zero and a wimp in Resident Evil.
Maybe singing leech James Marcus is a bit campy too.
This game has such potential but a lot of things just miss the mark. It could’ve been a masterpiece such as REmake with a little more thought and effort.

i played this in hard mode with original control. it really too hard with the boss. only re0, that i was never clear it with out a save.
