A Little Overkill On The Baler

  • Way to much tractor for the job as far as power but the T does control the baler more comfortably on the hills. Also did some more looking and found a few more tire options for a 10R 22.5 so the quest continues.

    Good fix on the baler. They can either be fun to run when they work correctly or frustrating when they miss knots or lose a bearing somewhere. I used to like working on them. I miss that. Figuring out what a problem is on a baler takes some time, but getting it to bale a days worth of hay without a hang-up or a missed knot is a good day.

    You really shouldn't apologize for explaining the way you did. It's through you explaining that we get a chance to learn more about things. I found it very interesting and helpful. I thank you for taking the time to share stuff with us, no matter what subject it is. That's one of the reasons I watch your channel. I really enjoyed seeing the baler at work and doing so much better. I'm glad you were able to finally get it figured out. It sure had me stumped. Like you, I was thinking how nice it would have been to have a few more acres to bale just because it was working well. See you soon.

    I do like videos where someone has a problem with something as you had with the baler, and they take the time to explain and show you the solution to remedy that problem is very satisfying. There may be 100 others watching with that same troubling problem. Thanks.

    You remind me of my experiences in the late 1950's and early 1960's on our dairy farm in the N/W Ala. We had a S-55 gasser that was used extensively bailing hay and cutting silage. Oliver has the finest in farm machinery. I enjoy using my restored 550 diesel that I bought in 2007 in memory of my growing up on Olivers.

    I know my dad and I have been converting the rear rims on our C70 over to the semi because nobody around us will fix a split rim anymore. But know we have out the semi rims on the back and they are fine. One truck that doesn’t go any further than out to the field and back still has old ones on one side and the semi rims on the other. If you would like I can take pictures and send them to you so you can have a look.
    I just know that the tire shops here are carrying the change over rims for everyone to change over and it doesn’t seem to expensive.

  • @super6954
    @super6954 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Thanks for another great video, those bales certainly look better than they did before. Those old trucks are getting to be pain here in Canada with replacing old tires and certain rims. There is a company in Ontario called Military tires has a comprehensive web site might help you figure out tires and rims that are available from surplus. I can't remember it was a while ago i looked on forums, but some newer school bus tires might be smaller sized 22.5's that could fit other rims, so might be worth seeing about that if you know anybody involved with busses . I know our Ford Louisville was on 900x20's on Daytons, when they tossed their cookies we got lucky and found a set of 900x20 radials for the back of it that were on the correct rims. Now they are getting bad the 22.5 dayton rims turn up at the dump where guys changed to new style lug hubs and rims, so I grabbed 8 of them and still have 4 spare with good tires, you can't beat free. it just makes mom mad when I bring home more to put behind the workshop than I take somedays L.O.L . Take care

    Those are some nice looking bales. My NH baler does a pretty good job of not missing bales, but I think I’m going to try to find that video to tune it up even better. I was always told to feed the baler as much as you can. It seems to thrive on big windrows or faster speeds. I try to tell my wife to drive as fast as I’m able to keep up on the wagon.

    • @Oliver66FarmBoy
      @Oliver66FarmBoy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In full windrows speed doesn’t matter as much. In light windrows you have to run fast enough to keep the bale chamber full or it will load one side heavy and start making banana bales. The older New Holland’s with the feed forks on the heavy roller chain are the worst for it.

    Ethan 11R22.5's are the direct upgrade for 10.00-20's. They're almost exactly the same size, so that option would work. I hate the thought of giving money to China also, but they're also a good option for you. I have been around them on semis. They don't wear like they should for the money, but yours would age out before wearing out. Unfortunately there is no reasonably priced heavy truck tire nowadays. I don't like the idea of adapters, because I've seen too many guys with 1 tons on the side of the road missing wheels because of them. You could try to find one of those trucks in a junk yard with Dayton style hubs and change it over. Then you can just buy 22.5 Dayton rims and throw them on. Those rims are pretty cheap usually.

    Congratulations on winning the knotter battle. That can be a cuss-fest when you've got a bunch to bale and have nothing but knotter issues. When we were making small squares, seemed like dusty dry straw was more inclined to cause problems than hay. Straw seem less problematic with a little dew or a light sprinkle. Tires are another whole issue. Seems like used15 inch passenger/pickup tires are getting scarce when you don't need pricey implement tires for light duty.

    If it for some reason continues to be a problem try and go with a thicker twine, I had same problem this year after the old 8200 twine that came with my NH 315 bailer when I bought it ran out. I mean this twine was old, lincoln brand i beleive whos still in business and sold at farm and fleet or fleet farm up here in wisconsin. I looked everywhere for 8200, no dice so I went with 9000. Every 6-10 bales a knot would pop on me. Found online alot of old timers say to try thicker b4 adjusting and possibly messing up knotter worse. I put a few balls of 7200 in there and I haven't had a missed knot since then 185 bails later now.

    I’d definitely rather have overkill on a baler than barely enough. Was just baling straw the other day with our NH 316 and 4020 and was punching out 6-7 flake bales 32-34” long at around 2-3mph. That sure worked both the baler and the tractor pretty good. Don’t know about Oliver balers but it seems New Holland balers are at their best when they’re kept full.
